It’s been a few days since Eric gave me his phone number. I wanted to use it, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I had told him it was a one-time thing, so why can’t I get his handsome face out of my mind and why does my body crave his touch? The ride home was torture because I couldn’t stop thinking about him. Not only had I been thinking about him, but I hadn’t really seen him either after the first week. I kept reminding myself that he has a kid and a family, and that I should get him out of my head and try to fix things with Chris. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in the house and found dinner already prepared. It made me smile because I love Chris’ cooking. And he had gone the extra mile to create a romantic ambiance. Could he be finally getting better? I went to take a shower and try to wash my thoughts of Eric away. It was hard. I should be riding his face, but I was still clinging to a memory. When I got out of the shower, I pinned my damp hair up and put on something sexy in an attempt to fulfill my needs with Chris. Dinner went well, and even the foreplay we had after he came out of the shower. I loved the way his body looked naked, like an endless stream of delicious chocolate, and the veins that ran through certain parts of his body did something to me. But as soon as he tried to penetrate me, I couldn’t relax. I wanted to, but I just couldn’t. I tried to flip the script by giving him head, but he noticed the change in my body. He started questioning me about Eric. How did he know? It was no sense in lying about it now, right? “Mira, don’t play dumb with me. Is the guy you left with the reason I can’t touch you?” I stayed quiet, searching for the right words to answer his question. “Chris… I— By the time I tried to explain, he had already picked up his towel and gone to grab his phone. “Is this you?” he asked as he showed me a video of us leaving the club and two pictures of us. It was as if he was there. “Were you following me?” “ANSWER THE FUCKING QUESTION JAMIRA!” “How did you get those?” “MIRA!” I winced at the tone of his voice. “Yes, it’s me.” He got up from the bed and went to the window for a moment. Then, he turned to face me again. “Did you fuck him?” he asked, as if he genuinely didn’t want to know the answer but felt compelled to ask. “You don’t really want the answer to that.” “Mira… did you… fuck him?” My heart raced, and almost jumped out of my chest as I began to answer. “Chris… I’m so sorry. I was drunk, and I know it was wrong.” Tears filled his eyes. “This is why I don’t like you going out with those hoes you call friends! The one night you go out, you decide it’s a good idea to fuck someone you don’t even know!” Here we go again, calling my friends hoes. He knew I hated that because it was like he was calling me one too. You know, considering the whole “you are who you hang with” thing. “How did you get those?” “It doesn’t matter.” “You and I both know it does.” “God, I’m so stupid. I should’ve known you followed him home when I checked your location and you were away from the club and didn’t come back until 6 in the goddamn morning.” “Chris, I’m sorry I hurt you.” “He must be one hell of a man to have you not wanting to have sex with me,” he said, his voice filled with melancholy. He threw the phone on the bed, still unlocked. I looked down and saw that the name read Keema. My heart dropped as I tried to comprehend what else they could’ve been talking about. I couldn’t breathe at the thought of him hiding secrets as well.We sat in the parking lot for a moment before pulling off. During that time I checked my phone to see if I had any notifications from Kacie. Nothing. Of course she didn’t respond. She’s been acting weird as hell since she left. What got me was the fact that I told her she could’ve stayed. She insisted on leaving and creating this gap that didn’t have to exist. “Alright then sour patch, let’s go figure this out.” Now that I have Kayla with me, there was no way I was going back to work. I called my secretary and let her know I’d be working from home tomorrow and that I wasn’t returning to the office today either. This seemed like the perfect time to bond with Kayla like she’d been asking to do. We rode for twenty minutes before she finally realized we weren’t heading anywhere familiar to her. “Where are we going uncle?” “It’s a surprise.” I said with a grin on my face. Another thirty minutes and a playlist of Kayla’s favorite songs later, we were pulling into the par
*ERIC* “And why should we work with you?” “I’m glad you asked.” The man in the suit said as he opened his computer to show us the presentation he’d put together. This meeting was in the works for weeks as we tried to find the time to get together and discuss some things. From the looks of it, this guy was just reciting what someone else had put together for him. When certain questions were asked he’d either refer to something he previously said to make it sound good or he’d quickly skim through his notes. Things like that don’t usually go unnoticed around here and so far, this guy may just be leaving empty handed. While trying to focus on what this guy was saying, my phone vibrated in my pocket. In my mind I thought it was just a spam call or someone calling about an extended warranty I never knew existed. Each time my phone vibrated I let it go to voicemail. By the fourth back-to-back call, I leaned over and whispered to my project manager that I’d be back. She nodd
*AYANA* After a long day of taking X-rays, smelling breath, and passing out spit cups, I was ready to go home and sit my ass in some water with a nice glass of wine while I debate on what to do about my personal life. The last patient for the day just left, leaving me and Trish to lock up. After cleaning the office and the bathrooms, we set out unopened instruments for the next day. Trish was cool, but it was always this unchecked, uneasy energy about her. It was the kind that made you look back during a trust fall. Honestly I wouldn’t trust her ass to get me a cup of water. One time I was helping out at the front desk and this eerie feeling of someone watching me kept coming back out of nowhere. When scanning the room, she just stood there staring. Her gaze was unyielding and unsettling. She wanted me to see her, see me. I can’t get with that. Another time she had switched lunch times with me and when the boss came yelling at me, she just sat there and told this man that
*CHRIS* I’ve been calling Mira a lot lately. After the conversation with my dad, I realized that I had to get her back. It’s not like I was going to let her go without a fight to begin with, but something about his words that really hit hard for me. ‘When you have a good girl, you do everything you can to keep ‘em.’ That’s all I could think about. Don’t get me wrong it’s not like I wanted to. Deep down, I knew this was my fault. Had I kept it in my pants I’m sure we’d still be in the townhouse together. But also, had it not been for that crunchy bitch Ayana, she would’ve never met that motherfucker at the club. I still want to know what he said to get her attention. She didn’t come back home with me until about four months into us dating. One night is all it took for this bastard to get in her panties. I couldn’t tell you what pissed me off more. The fact that it was sudden, the fact that she actually likes him, the fact that she kept going back, or the fact that she’s actuall
*ERIC* After Jamira showed up, I can’t lie, I felt better about all the stuff that’s been going on lately. She stayed a while to talk and help with filing a few things for me. I actually like having her here. She’s really helpful. After going through a few cases and finishing up on two of them, I decided I needed a break. I went to go to Walt’s office. Once I got to the door, Dina, yet again was all in Walt’s face. She was sitting on the armrest of his chair with her hand on his chest. Seriously, what do these two do all day? “Dina, leave!” She hesitated and looked between us before running out of his office. Walt threw his hands up and grunted. “Why?” “Dina’s not worth the distraction.” Walt just stared at me a few seconds before returning back to work. “Hey, so I was wondering how Kacie was settling into her new place?” He paused. “Wouldn’t know anything about it.” “How was she when you helped her move the last of it?” “Fine.” “I called and she tri
*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo
