Rising Tensions

*KACIE*

At first, I was all for it.

Seriously.

When Eric told me Jamira was moving in, I supported it.

“She’s carrying your child,” I’d said. “Why wouldn’t she be here?”

It made sense, and I wanted my nephew close.

I wanted Eric to step up.

I wanted stability for all of them.

So no.

I wasn’t secretly plotting against Jamira.

Not then.

But then things changed.

Little things.

Eric stopped hanging out as much.

Kayla asked twice in one week if Uncle Eric was taking her to school, and both times I had to tell her no.

Movie night got canceled, and dinner plans got postponed.

He stopped answering my texts right away.

And every single excuse somehow came back to Jamira.

Jamira needed something.

Jamira had an appointment.

Jamira wasn’t feeling well.

Jamira wanted company.

Jamira.

Jamira.

Jamira.

And I hated myself for noticing.

One evening, I sat at the kitchen island while Kayla colored beside me.

Jamira stood at the stove stirring pasta sauce while Eric hovered behind her, his hand resting low on her back.

Casual.

Natural.

Intimate.

My jaw tightened, and I mentioned, “Kayla asked about you yesterday.”

Eric glanced over.

“Yeah?”

“She missed you.”

Eric frowned.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

I gave a soft laugh.

“Because you’re busy.”

Jamira looked over her shoulder.

“Oh, if you needed him—”

“I wasn’t talking to you.”

The words slipped out before I could stop them.

Silence.

Heavy.

Eric straightened immediately.

“Kacie.”

Jamira slowly turned from the stove.

Her expression stayed neutral.

Too neutral.

“I was just saying,” I muttered.

“No,” Eric said. “What was that?”

Kayla looked up from her coloring book.

Great.

Perfect.

“Nothing,” I said quickly.

But Jamira wasn’t stupid.

“No,” Jamira said calmly. “Go ahead.”

Eric rubbed his temple.

“Please don’t.”

Kacie crossed her arms.

“It just feels like we never see you anymore.”

There it was.

The truth.

Eric blinked.

“Kace—”

“And before anybody makes me the bad guy, I was the one encouraging this.”

Jamira said nothing.

That somehow made it worse.

“I supported her moving in,” I continued. “I support the baby. I support you being happy.”

“Then what’s the problem?” Eric asked.

I laughed bitterly.

“The problem is I lost my brother.”

That landed.

Hard.

Eric’s face shifted immediately.

Not anger.

Guilt.

Jamira saw it.

Of course she saw it.

And suddenly she became the outsider in what should’ve been her home.

“You didn’t lose him,” Jamira said quietly.

I looked at her.

“Didn’t I?”

Eric exhaled sharply.

“Okay. Enough.”

“No,” I snapped, emotion cracking through now. “Kayla asks about you constantly.”

That got him.

Eric looked toward his niece.

Kayla kept coloring, unaware.

Jamira suddenly understood this wasn’t hostility. It was hurt. Which somehow made it harder.

I loved my brother. That would never change.

Eric had always been the one to protect me, even when we were kids. If I got into trouble, Eric handled it. If somebody hurt me, Eric was ready to fight. That was just who he was.

So forgive me if I wasn’t exactly rolling out the welcome mat for the woman who moved into his condo after what? A week?

Okay, maybe it had been longer, but that wasn’t the point.

The point was everything felt fast.

Too fast.

And my brother—my smart, cautious, overthinking brother—was acting like a man who had lost every bit of common sense because some pretty girl with a complicated past smiled at him. I wasn’t blind. Jamira was beautiful.

She could cook. She had manners. She was funny when she wanted to be.But she also came with baggage. A bitter ex. A pregnancy. Drama that somehow kept following her everywhere she went.

And now Eric was neck deep in it. No. I wasn’t being mean.I was being a sister.

That same night after dinner, Jamira was in the kitchen rinsing plates while Eric leaned against the counter finishing his drink.

I folded my arms.

“So,” I started sweetly, “how’s domestic life treating you?”

Jamira smiled without turning around.

“Pretty good.”

“Good,” I said. “That’s great.”

Eric looked at me with a look that said behave. I ignored it.

“Just seems like a big adjustment.”

Jamira dried her hands slowly before turning toward me.

“It is.”

Her smile stayed in place. That was the annoying part. She always smiled.

“Especially considering everything.”

Eric straightened.

“Kacie.”

“What?” I shrugged. “I’m just saying.”

Jamira tilted her head.

“Saying what exactly?”

Eric sighed.

Here we go.

“Nothing,” he muttered.

“No,” Jamira said, still calm. “Let her finish.”

I smiled.

“Oh, I just think moving in with someone because you’re carrying his baby is… a lot.”

The silence in the room was heavy.

Eric immediately stepped forward.

“Kacie.”

But Jamira held up a hand.

“No, let her talk.”

Her tone stayed even, but her eyes were cold and sharp. She saw me. Good.

“Because if this is about protecting your brother,” Jamira continued, “just say that.”

“It is.”

Eric blinked.

I blinked.

Well At least we were being honest now.

“I love my brother,” I said firmly. “And I’m not going to apologize for making sure he’s not making decisions with his heart instead of his head.”

Eric ran a hand over his face.

“Kacie, enough.”

“No,” I snapped. “Because nobody else is saying it.”

Jamira crossed her arms.

“You think I’m using him.”

“I think this happened conveniently.”

Eric stepped between us.

“Okay. We’re done.”

“No, we’re not,” I said.

“Yes, we are.”

“Eric—”

“No.”

That shut me up.

Because Eric never used that tone with me.

Jamira noticed too.

And suddenly Eric was exactly where he didn’t want to be… between us.

A few days later, I pulled Eric aside after dinner. “She’s moved in fast, you know,” I said, my voice low. “

“Are you sure she’s all in for you, not just the situation?”

Eric gave a patient glance, but before he could respond, Jamira entered, catching the tail end.

With a calm but firm tone, Jamira said, “Kacie, I know you care about him. But I’m not here for half-measures. I’m here for us.”

I held my gaze a moment, then softened. “We’ll see,” she said, not fully convinced, but willing to watch.

And from there, trust would have to be earned, step by step.

  • Love On Ice   Late At Night

*CHRIS* I’ve been calling Mira a lot lately. After the conversation with my dad, I realized that I had to get her back. It’s not like I was going to let her go without a fight to begin with, but something about his words that really hit hard for me. ‘When you have a good girl, you do everything you can to keep ‘em.’ That’s all I could think about. Don’t get me wrong it’s not like I wanted to. Deep down, I knew this was my fault. Had I kept it in my pants I’m sure we’d still be in the townhouse together. But also, had it not been for that crunchy bitch Ayana, she would’ve never met that motherfucker at the club. I still want to know what he said to get her attention. She didn’t come back home with me until about four months into us dating. One night is all it took for this bastard to get in her panties. I couldn’t tell you what pissed me off more. The fact that it was sudden, the fact that she actually likes him, the fact that she kept going back, or the fact that she’s actuall

  • Love On Ice   Suspicion

*ERIC* After Jamira showed up, I can’t lie, I felt better about all the stuff that’s been going on lately. She stayed a while to talk and help with filing a few things for me. I actually like having her here. She’s really helpful. After going through a few cases and finishing up on two of them, I decided I needed a break. I went to go to Walt’s office. Once I got to the door, Dina, yet again was all in Walt’s face. She was sitting on the armrest of his chair with her hand on his chest. Seriously, what do these two do all day? “Dina, leave!” She hesitated and looked between us before running out of his office. Walt threw his hands up and grunted. “Why?” “Dina’s not worth the distraction.” Walt just stared at me a few seconds before returning back to work. “Hey, so I was wondering how Kacie was settling into her new place?” He paused. “Wouldn’t know anything about it.” “How was she when you helped her move the last of it?” “Fine.” “I called and she tri

*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo

  • Love On Ice   The Silence

*ERIC* The move was not only bittersweet, but it made the condo feel bigger in a way I hadn’t imagined possible. The commotion in the morning, the laughter, even the routine I’d gotten accustomed to were all nonexistent now. I sat on the couch watching the game when Jamira came and sat next to me. She took my hand into hers and looked at me for a while before speaking. “You know we should do something nice for Kacie.” I nodded my head not fully processing what she was saying. She didn’t press the issue. I’m glad she didn’t. She just motioned for me to lift my legs up and started massaging my feet. That did more than I expected, actually. It was like most of the tension that had been building over the months was finally starting to ease. The rest of it melted away when I got in the shower. The water ran down my body and took my troubles with it. When I got out I found Jamira had already fallen asleep. I slid in next to her, not trying to wake her up. That night

  • Love On Ice   Shady Business

*AYANA* “Ayana, if you don’t go back in the house and change, we’re not going anywhere.” “What’s wrong with it?” “If I show you what’s wrong with it, we’ll never make it out.” I rolled my eyes at him. Whose dad is this man? For the record, it’s nothing but a little cleavage. Sometimes the titty is the outfit. I thought it was cute. I stepped out in a denim mini skirt with a corset top and a nice pair of heels. I will admit that top was a size or two too small, but that’s because I wanted that lift. Jeremy didn’t appreciate it. He’s always thinking these thirsty dudes are looking at me. I keep telling him that’s none of his concern. He just keeps insisting on telling me to change my clothes. I went inside and found a cute bodycon dress that stopped mid-thigh. It was red with black straps. I paired it with a black leather jacket and my black chunky heels. When I stepped outside, he smirked and gave his ‘nod of approval’. He opened my door and helped me into my seat. “

  • Love On Ice   Secrets

*CHRIS* The next day, I went into work with dinner still on my mind. I never knew my mom was in such a state. She seemed perfectly fine when she came to visit me at the hospital. She even helped me around the room during my recovery. I hadn’t known she’d been lying. Neither did I know that she lied to my dad too. I wondered what else they weren’t telling me since I left last night. That unsettling flutter in my stomach hadn’t left either. It’s safe to say I didn’t sleep. Between me trying to find Mira and worrying about my mom, I might be on the verge of losing my mind myself. I didn’t talk to my dad about it because it was already late, so I ended up leaving, but I intended to talk to him about it today. The morning rush came early, and we were all busy trying to get everyone in and out. It wasn’t until around one o’clock that I was able to get enough breathing room to go address things. I went down the hall and knocked on his door. “Come in.” I walked in and sa
