*JAMIRA*

I lied there, staring at the ceiling, trying to process not only my thoughts but also why I was lying in bed with a complete stranger. This was so out of character for me. Part of me was waiting for regret to follow, but it never came. As bad as I knew this was wrong, I couldn’t feel bad about it. A man I barely knew treated my body so well and made sure I was satisfied. Chris had never treated my body like he knew exactly what to do to send me over the edge. Shit, Chris! I almost forgot we lived together, and he’d be suspicious if I didn’t come back home.

Panic overcame me, and I turned to see the time on Eric’s phone on the nightstand. It was 4 a.m.! I pushed Eric’s arm off me and scrambled to gather my clothes and put them on. When I got dressed, I slipped out the door and searched for my phone in my purse. Upon checking, I had two missed calls from Chris, six messages from Ayana, and a missed call from her too. Once I got outside, I called her.

“Mira, what the hell?!” I could hear the anger and worry in her voice.

“Yana, where are you? Come get me!”

“Girl, I was already on my way. I want all the details.”

I laughed. This girl is always willing to hear about my life. “I got you.”

As I waited for her to come, I couldn’t stop smiling at the fact that I had some good sex a few hours ago, and although I cheated, I still don’t regret what I did.

The sound of music pulled me from my thoughts as Ayana finally pulled up. I got in the car, feeling relieved and anxious at the same time. Relieved because now I didn’t have to worry about getting caught outside this man’s house, but anxious about what was to come. Chris had called, and I could just imagine the animosity I’d walk into when I got home.

“Oh my god, girl! I’ve never seen the walk of shame look so good,” she said, smiling wide.

I blushed and turned my head.

“Wait… did… did you really go through with it?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Oh my word! Jamira Emani Hines, you slut! You gave that man some, didn’t you?”

I couldn’t help but nod in agreement. “Mm hmm, and it was absolutely delicious.”

“Tell me everything!”

“Let’s just say he’s an eater girl,” I said with a sly smile on my face.

“No, girl! He ate your…” Her expression said everything as she pulled over to listen to all the details. I’m not entirely sure why she couldn’t have driven, but I’m not tripping.

The rest of the ride was filled with light energy and music. Ayana occasionally glanced my way, mocking me for being fast. Soon, the car approached my home, and it was time to get out. I didn’t want to face Chris alone just yet, so I invited Ayana in for breakfast. At first, she hesitated, but I think she sensed the tension and eventually agreed.

I walked in expecting to be greeted by an irate man who would be completely unreasonable. Instead, I was met with something far more unsettling. He calmly walked down the stairs with a blank expression on his face and simply said, “Morning,” so dry that I felt like I needed water after that one. Ayana and I both looked at each other, bewildered. There was no yelling, no fighting, no hostility. Just indifference.

“I’m getting ready to make breakfast. Did you want some?”

He walked to the door and turned around with a look on his face that I didn’t quite understand. “You got it. You always do.” And with that, he was gone. He didn’t even slam the door this time. Something was definitely wrong.

“Damn, not even a fight? That’s weird even for him.”

“Oh my god, do you think he knows something?”

“Honestly, you’re just getting home, and even though he can’t prove anything, he’d be foolish not to suspect anything.”

She wasn’t lying. Those words hung thick in the air. I was speechless, racking my brain at the possibilities of what he could be thinking or how much he possibly knew.

“Girl, don’t worry about it until he can show you any kind of proof. It’s all speculation. No face, no case.”

You’d think that would have put me at ease, considering I still don’t regret hooking up with Eric. However, I couldn’t help but feel uneasy seeing him like this, clueless about what might be going through his mind.

“I don’t know, girl. I did get two missed calls from him. I wonder if that’s related to it.”

“Are you serious? And you didn’t call him back or even let him know you were okay?”

“No, I was drunk and didn’t think I had to. He usually ignores me when I’m with you.”

Ayana was silent for a moment, then something clicked. She reached for my phone and checked something. Afterward, she looked at something on her phone as well. As if the pieces just fell into place, she finally let me in on the truth.

“Mira, he has your location. I think he checked it.”

Anger surged through me. “How do you know?”

“He sent me a direct message asking about you. I didn’t even know he knew my social media.”

“Did you respond?”

“Of course not! He’s my nemesis, and I just thought to check now.”

I couldn’t help but wonder what was going through his head at that moment as I made breakfast. If he knew something, why hadn’t he said anything? What would make him suddenly calm like that after I’d been gone all night?

“Look, if anything happens, you can always come stay with me. And if he asks, tell him you were with me anyway. My page is private, so he won’t be able to see what I’ve posted.”

I nodded and continued cooking. When the food was done and plated, we ate in silence, analyzing everything. This went on until Ayana went home, leaving me alone with my thoughts.

  • Love On Ice   Suspicion

*ERIC* After Jamira showed up, I can’t lie, I felt better about all the stuff that’s been going on lately. She stayed a while to talk and help with filing a few things for me. I actually like having her here. She’s really helpful. After going through a few cases and finishing up on two of them, I decided I needed a break. I went to go to Walt’s office. Once I got to the door, Dina, yet again was all in Walt’s face. She was sitting on the armrest of his chair with her hand on his chest. Seriously, what do these two do all day? “Dina, leave!” She hesitated and looked between us before running out of his office. Walt threw his hands up and grunted. “Why?” “Dina’s not worth the distraction.” Walt just stared at me a few seconds before returning back to work. “Hey, so I was wondering how Kacie was settling into her new place?” He paused. “Wouldn’t know anything about it.” “How was she when you helped her move the last of it?” “Fine.” “I called and she tri

*JAMIRA* Ayana and I talked and laughed as she recounted the events from her date and everything that happened afterwards. That girl still hadn’t changed. “Okay, but why didn’t you call me? I would’ve picked you up.” “Girl you too busy playing house with that man all up in your business.” “You see where that got me.” We both laughed. “Speaking of that, how’s the baby?” “He’s fine. I’m just ready for him to come already.” “Just hang in there girl.” I smiled. It’s amazing how a simple phrase can make you feel better than you did before. Even though I was happy to be talking to Ayana, my mind stayed on Eric. Ever since Kacie left he’s been down in the dumps. I thought if I surprised him at work, he’d feel at least a little better. Then Walt was acting strange like he didn’t want to be bothered. Eric would never say it, but I could tell he felt that the whole interaction was…off. “Hello, hello?” Her voice pulled me away from my thoughts. For a moment I’d fo

  • Love On Ice   The Silence

*ERIC* The move was not only bittersweet, but it made the condo feel bigger in a way I hadn’t imagined possible. The commotion in the morning, the laughter, even the routine I’d gotten accustomed to were all nonexistent now. I sat on the couch watching the game when Jamira came and sat next to me. She took my hand into hers and looked at me for a while before speaking. “You know we should do something nice for Kacie.” I nodded my head not fully processing what she was saying. She didn’t press the issue. I’m glad she didn’t. She just motioned for me to lift my legs up and started massaging my feet. That did more than I expected, actually. It was like most of the tension that had been building over the months was finally starting to ease. The rest of it melted away when I got in the shower. The water ran down my body and took my troubles with it. When I got out I found Jamira had already fallen asleep. I slid in next to her, not trying to wake her up. That night

*AYANA* “Ayana, if you don’t go back in the house and change, we’re not going anywhere.” “What’s wrong with it?” “If I show you what’s wrong with it, we’ll never make it out.” I rolled my eyes at him. Whose dad is this man? For the record, it’s nothing but a little cleavage. Sometimes the titty is the outfit. I thought it was cute. I stepped out in a denim mini skirt with a corset top and a nice pair of heels. I will admit that top was a size or two too small, but that’s because I wanted that lift. Jeremy didn’t appreciate it. He’s always thinking these thirsty dudes are looking at me. I keep telling him that’s none of his concern. He just keeps insisting on telling me to change my clothes. I went inside and found a cute bodycon dress that stopped mid-thigh. It was red with black straps. I paired it with a black leather jacket and my black chunky heels. When I stepped outside, he smirked and gave his ‘nod of approval’. He opened my door and helped me into my seat. “

*CHRIS* The next day, I went into work with dinner still on my mind. I never knew my mom was in such a state. She seemed perfectly fine when she came to visit me at the hospital. She even helped me around the room during my recovery. I hadn’t known she’d been lying. Neither did I know that she lied to my dad too. I wondered what else they weren’t telling me since I left last night. That unsettling flutter in my stomach hadn’t left either. It’s safe to say I didn’t sleep. Between me trying to find Mira and worrying about my mom, I might be on the verge of losing my mind myself. I didn’t talk to my dad about it because it was already late, so I ended up leaving, but I intended to talk to him about it today. The morning rush came early, and we were all busy trying to get everyone in and out. It wasn’t until around one o’clock that I was able to get enough breathing room to go address things. I went down the hall and knocked on his door. “Come in.” I walked in and sa

  • Love On Ice   Coming Back

*CHRIS* For weeks I’ve been working to escape my own thoughts of Jamira. She really thinks I’m going to just lay down and accept the fact that she wants to leave? She has life all fucked up. The last time we spoke I made sure to let her know this wasn’t over. I intend to show her exactly what I mean. I’d been riding past her school looking for her for a week just to finally call and find out she doesn’t even work there anymore. That made my mission to find her harder, but not impossible. The following week I rode around and when I went to get some gas, I just so happened to catch her bald-headed ass friend Ayana. I made sure she didn’t notice me by sliding a little down in my seat when she exited the car. She was with a medium-built, medium-brown man with dreads and just a few inches taller than her. I wanted to throw my shoe at the back of her head. It took all of ten minutes for them to come out and get in the car. I waited another five minutes before I left. I
