LOGINCHAPTER 2
Alex POV My thumb hovers over the notification. The email sits there, unopened, for the past three hours. I catch myself reaching for my phone many times, pulling back each time like a coward. When I finally opened it at midnight, it’s just two lines of message,‘I sent my reply through the company-Ellis.’ Maya calls the next morning, breathless with excitement about the contracts and planning schedules. I have four days to prepare myself for the man I’ve spent three years trying to forget. The week passes in a blur of sleepless nights as I prepare myself to see him again. Tuesday morning drags by, and I arrive at the office earlier than I’ve ever been. “You look like hell,” Maya says, bringing me a hot cup of coffee. "Thanks."I replied with my eyes fixed on the coffee. "He's just a designer, Alex. You've met with hundreds of them." Not the same, I think. "I'm fine," I tell her, brushing invisible wrinkles from my suit. Her raised eyebrow tells me she doesn't believe a word of it. At 9:45 AM Ellis's team arrives. Three assistants, his business manager and a lawyer. No Ellis. Ten minutes pass, still no signs of Ellis. At exactly 10:25 AM, Ellis Valmont walks in, and the rest of the room simply fades away. He's wearing sky blue pants that hug his long legs and white shirt unbuttoned at the collar. I can see his collarbone and the smooth skin there. God, that neck. His hair is braided to the back and packed in a round bun, with no piece falling back. His hazel eyes met mine with burning intensity. My mouth goes dry and heat spreads through my entire body. I've never been so grateful for a piece of furniture in my life. Ellis takes the seat next to me, close enough that he could smell my arousal. The table is the only thing saving me from this complete humiliation. "Gentlemen," Ellis says, his voice smooth and cool. "Shall we begin?" No excuse or apology for being late. He pulls the chair right next to mine, sits down crossing his legs, and then turns his head to look at me with a cold smirk. That small curve of his lips makes me want to flip this table and… The next hour is a slow torture. Maya is discussing our creative direction but I can’t focus on a single word. Ellis leans in close enough to catch the smell of his cologne. It's different from before, something darker. I hate that it’s not mine on his skin. I don't like the fact that I'm painfully aware of the gap between our hands. Those long fingers gently tapping against the table. I remember exactly how they felt gripping my… Mr Hawthorne?" Ellis’s voice breaks through my trance. He’s smirking, leaning back so his legs brush mine. "You seem... distracted,is the timeline too 'tight' for you?" "I can handle a tight schedule Mr Valmont," I growled. The room goes silent and several heads turn to look at us.Maya clears her throat, looking between us awkwardly. While Maya presents Hawthorne group design style, which clashes violently with Velles’s patterns. Velles' team disagreed on every presentation we made. "Maybe there's a way to combine both approaches?" Maya’s voice echoes between us, obviously trying to bridge the gap. "Can we?" Ellis looks at me. "Mr Hawthorne seems pretty attached,he doesn't compromise." My hands grip the table hard enough that my knuckles go white. He’s getting under my skin, and he knows it. “Let's... take a ten minute break and we will resume to discuss the material samples.” Maya announced The second everyone goes out. I head to the bathroom attached to my office and splash cold water on my face. When I look up, my reflection stares back flushed.I look thoroughly wrecked. This is only the first meeting. Three months of this will do me more harm than I'd acknowledge. When I return, the conference room is empty except for one person. Ellis stands by the window, his back to me. The twenty feet of space between us feels like nothing and everything. "Is this how it's going to be?" Ellis asks softly. "You’re being unnecessarily bitter," I say, moving closer before I realize it. "Every word out of your mouth today has a bite to it!”my words came out harshly. Ellis doesn't flinch, instead he gives mocking laughs."Why get angry Alex? You’re the one who called what we had a mistake. You used me, then trashed my brand to save your own ego.” "Is this a game of revenge to you?" I demand furiously. "You always did prefer having everything under your control," Ellis says, his voice low. "That interview wasn't what it seemed okay?" I hiss, stepping closer. I can feel the heat radiating off his body. My eyes drop to his wet parted lips. "You don't get to do this," Ellis whispers, his voice shaking as I press into his personal space. "You don't get to come back three years later and act like you own me.” My hand moves before I can stop it, my fingers rubbing those plump lips. He gasps, his eyes fluttering shut ,a small moan escapes him,a sound I’ve heard in my dreams for a thousand nights. "Stop," he breathes, even as he leans his forehead against mine. "Why? Tell me you don't feel this." I slide my other hand down, my palm flat against the small of his back, pulling him against me. I want him to feel exactly what he’s doing to me. I want him to know I’m a second away from totally losing it. "Because wanting isn't enough," he whispers, tears rolling down his face. "One night with you ruined me, Alex.I tried to find this... this fire... in someone else but nobody else is you." "Then stop fighting it.” I pressed softly. "You wanted me for just one night! Only for the sex,you hurted me," he whispers. "Do you know how many men I tried to replace you with?" He wipes his tears. "But none of them were you, none of them made me feel like this" "Ellis..." I breathed I reach for him cupping his face.He gasps but doesn't pull away. I brush the tear off his cheek with my thumb softly rubbing his lower lip pulling it apart gently. "Alex," he whispers and grabs nails digging into the skin on my neck. "Tell me you don't want me to kiss you right now." I lean in until our faces are inches apart. Ellis tilts his head up, lips parting softly as I close the gap and press my lips to his. The moment our lips touch, the door opens.CHAPTER TWELVE ELLIS POVThe morning sun cut a sharp line across the mattress, waking me slowly.I was face down, my cheek pressed against the familiar, steady rise and fall of Alex's chest. The air in the room was cool, but the sheets tangled around my hips kept the warmth trapped between us.For the first time all week, the heavy ache in my shoulders had dissolved into the mattress.Alex's heartbeat picked up under my ear.It didn't speed up gently,it spiked, hard and sudden.Above me, his breath caught. The easy warmth that usually rolled off him vanished instantly, replaced by a rigid, freezing stillness.I kept my eyes shut, pretending to sleep as his arm began to slide out from under me.He moved slowly and gently.I let out a soft, low grunt and rolled onto my side to give him space, keeping my eyes heavy and closed. The mattress shifted as his weight left it.Through lowered lashes, I watched him s
CHAPTER ELEVEN ELLIS POVI stared at the message delivered twenty minutes ago. I set the phone down, only to pick it up again a second later. Still no response. I kept staring ahead until the walls started to blur together, sitting there in the quiet as the evening light slowly faded from the room.I paced back and forth between the couch and the window, checking the street every time a car drove by. After some time, I just stood off to the side of the glass, watching the traffic pass, unable to sit still. Then, my phone buzzed on the table.I grabbed it so fast I nearly dropped it, catching it against my chest. Three dots danced on the screen indicating that he's typing.“On my way”I set the phone down on the counter. For a second, I just stood there, staring at nothing. I dragged a hand over my face and let out a long sigh.“He actually said yes.” I glanced back at the screen like the message might magically change if I looked too long. I wasn’t ready for that answer.“Oh my
CHAPTER TENALEX POVThe sun sets outside while I sit still at my desk working. The office is quiet since everyone must have gone home hours ago, tired too.The stock closed at eighty four, down eight percent in one day.I have gone over the numbers more than ten times today, weighing every suggestion and still, nothing feels right. My mind drifts back to yesterday’s interview. Every word had been carefully crafted by the PR team. They protected the company, but they still feel off and I can’t shake this feeling off.A knock at the door makes jolt be back.My mother stands in the doorway dolled up in a blue designer button down gown, purse over one arm and a paper bag dangling from the other hand.“How did you even find your way up here?” I ask, a little taken aback. Mom has never been great with directions.I half expected her to get lost before she made it this far."The security man helps me." She wa
CHAPTER NINE ALEX POV I was a few minutes away from Velles when the traffic stopped completely. The road was packed with red lights everywhere. Orange cones had funneled two lanes into one, and a detour sign redirected half the cars down a side street but it didn’t help. Everyone was stuck. I turned the music up and tapped my fingers against the wheel while watching the red brake lights ahead. Ellis email from earlier flashed through my mind. I have replayed the conversation a hundred times already, and I still wasn’t ready. A horn blares behind me and I jump slightly to realise the line has moved. Velles is easy to get from the street. The building was all white with black glass. The windows went all the way up and inside, a strip of original brick ran along one wall, rough against all that clean white space. I parked in the visitor lot and went in. The lobby
CHAPTER EIGHTELLIS POVI stare at the name displayed on my phone and my heartbeat races.I set my coffee down the second cup today and let it go to voicemail. took three seconds of silence before it starts ringing again and I finally press the answer button"Ellis." Her voice cuts through the speaker coldly. Exactly as I remember."Mother."I answered "I saw the news, your father needs you to come home tonight.”Of course she did. Not how are you,not are you alright. Just straight to the point."I can't,I have a lot to do…”" Do not make me stress myself,Ellis"she cuts in sharply and the line goes dead.I sit there, the phone still pressed to my ear in the silence.Home, she wants me home. The place I have not stepped foot in for two years. The place I swore I would never go back to.I should refuse and ignore her completely. But if I don't show up, she will do wh
CHAPTER SEVENELLIS POVI stare at the wall clock as a car passes outside, the sound fading as it moves down the street.A few minutes later, another car goes by,then the street goes silent again.I pick up my phone, open the browser and type "Hawthorne Group" into the search bar.My hand stills over the screen for a second before I press enter and let the results load.BREAKING NEWS: Hawthorne Group CEO Accused of Design TheftThe phone almost slips from my hand. I tap the first link. Two columns of sketches fill the screen. Almost identical designs, mine on the left with the Velles logo and Alex's company on the right.I scroll back up and look at them again. These are not stolen. These are samples from our meetings. We worked on it together.Someone took it and twisted the narration beautifully.I checked the time,3:23 AM.No messages and no call from Alex since yesterday.I drop back on
CHAPTER 3ALEX POVThe door swings open just as our lips touch."Alex, the samples just arrived and… oh shit."Theo freezes in the doorway, his eyes going wide. The folder in his hands slips, papers spilling on the floor.Ellis shoves me hard enough that I stumble back. His face goes pale as he mov
