The light hurt.
That was my first thought as consciousness dragged me back to reality. My eyelids fluttered open, and the brightness of the bedroom made me wince.
For a moment, I couldn't understand what was happening. The world was too sharp, too clear, too vivid.
Having grown accustomed to darkness, I struggled to adjust to the light, my vision swimming in unfamiliar clarity as my head throbbed a little.
Just a few hours ago, I'd finished my shower in the bathroom down the hall. The steam was still thick in the air, and I stepped out, grabbing for my towel like always. But my foot slipped on the wet tile.
I remember reaching out, trying to catch the sink, but instead, I cracked my head right against the edge of the bathtub. Pain exploded, and I blacked out for a second.
The same place the rogue’s claws had struck three years ago lit up as if someone had set a match to my brain… and then everything went dark.
Then—her voice. My wolf. After three years of silence, she screamed in my mind.
"Yara! Can you see? Can you finally see?"
My breath caught in my throat. She'd been quiet about it for three years, ever since that attack.
I blinked rapidly, staring at the ceiling above me. The texture of the paint. The tiny crack running along the corner. Details I hadn't seen in three years.
"I can see," I whispered, my voice breaking. "Oh my God, I can see."
My hands trembled as I brought them to my face, touching my eyes as if to confirm they were real. The smooth skin of my eyelids. The dampness of tears already forming. Everything felt surreal, like I was living in someone else's body.
I... I could see again.
"Sight," my wolf yipped in excitement. "Sight! We're finally whole again."
I'd been blind—trapped in endless night since the attack.
Three years of depending on others, of being helpless, of living in a world of shadows.
Three years of memorizing the layout of rooms by counting steps, of identifying people by their voices and scents alone.
I threw off the covers and swung my legs over the side of the bed. My heart was racing.
I needed to tell Daniel.
My mate, my husband, the man who'd stood by me through everything. Alpha Daniel would be so happy.
He'd been my rock, my constant companion through the darkness. The thought of seeing his face light up with joy made my chest swell.
I stood up, testing my balance.
Everything felt different now that I could see where I was going. I made my way toward the bedroom door, my hand reaching for the handle.
That's when I heard it.
A woman's moan. Soft, breathy, coming from down the hall.
I froze.
"What is that?" my wolf asked, suddenly alert.
My hand hovered over the doorknob. The sound came again, louder this time. And then a man's groan—deep, familiar.
Daniel.
My stomach dropped. No. No, it couldn't be.
I opened the door as quietly as possible and stepped into the hallway.
The sounds were coming from the guest bedroom. The door was slightly open, just a crack.
My feet moved on their own, carrying me forward even though part of me wanted to run in the opposite direction.
Each step felt like I was walking through quicksand. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe it was just my imagination playing tricks on me after being blind for so long.
When I reached the door, I peered through the gap.
What I saw made my blood turn to ice.
Daniel—my Daniel—was sitting on the edge of the bed.
And Judy, my servant, the one who’d been living with us to help care for me after I lost my sight, was on her knees in front of him.
Her head was moving up and down, and Daniel’s hand was tangled in her hair.
"Oh God, Judy," Daniel groaned. "Your mouth feels so good."
I couldn't breathe. I couldn't move. This couldn't be real.
Judy pulled back, looking up at him with a guilty expression. "I'm sorry," she said, her voice soft. "I know you have a wife, but I really love you so much. I can't help myself."
Daniel laughed—actually laughed—and pulled her up onto his lap.
His hands immediately went to her breasts, squeezing them roughly. "Don't be sorry, baby. You know I only married that blind bitch for one reason."
The words hit me like a physical blow.
"Her medical company," Judy said, grinding against him. "For the resources."
"Exactly." Daniel's voice was cold, calculating. Nothing like the warm, loving tone he used with me.
"Once I secure her company's medical resources, I'll have enough support to challenge for the Alpha position. Everyone will back me. I'll finally have what I deserve."
"No," my wolf whimpered inside me. "He's lying. He has to be lying."
But he wasn't. I could see the truth written all over his face.
Daniel smirked. "Then I divorce her. And once I'm Alpha, I'll deal with Yara once and for all. My dear mate won't know what hit her."
Daniel grabbed Judy's hips, positioning her above him. "And once he's gone and that blind fool is out of my life, everything will be mine. The power, the status, the money. All of it."
My vision blurred with tears. Three years.
Three years I'd been blind, and this was what my husband had been doing behind my back.
Sleeping with My Nanny.
Using me.
Planning to destroy me.
I thought back to that night three years ago. And couldn't help but think how foolish I had been.
"We need to get out of here," my wolf urged. "Before they see us."
She was right. I took a step backward, trying to be silent. But my foot caught on the edge of the hallway rug.
I stumbled.
My hand shot out, grabbing the doorframe to steady myself. The movement made the door creak loudly.
Inside the room, both Daniel and Judy's heads snapped toward the sound.
"What was that?" Judy hissed, panic in her voice.
I held my breath, pressing myself against the wall beside the door. My heart was hammering so hard I was sure they could hear it.
"Probably nothing," Daniel said, but I heard uncertainty in his tone. "Maybe the wind."
"Should we check?" Judy asked.
There was a pause. A long, horrible pause.
Then I heard footsteps approaching the door.
YARA's povI quickly made my way to the closet where Jeremiah was, with as much stealth as I could possibly manage.Every step I took felt deafening in the darkness and I kept expecting Daniel to turn suddenly in my direction. All the while, Daniel kept swiping his axe, hitting the wall several times because he clearly couldn't see what he was doing as he vowed to wipe me off the face of the earth."Damn you, Yara! I'm going to kill you! And once I'm done, I'm going to feed your body parts to the ravens! You foolish b*tch!"My heart was racing, but I couldn't keep my focus on what Daniel wished and dreamed he could do to me. Instead, I quietly opened the closet door, slapped my mouth over Jeremiah's mouth to keep him from speaking out, while I spoke to Daniel to mask the sound of the closet door opening and closing."Threats and more threats, that's all you're good at, Daniel. But it seems it's escaped your notice that right now, we are both like blind men, and I'm the one who is mos
YARA's POVMy heart thudded in my chest as I slowly backed away from him into the corner of the room.Daniel was many things, but he wasn't a wimp. If he was holding out that axe in front of me, it was because he intended to use it. But even then, I had no intentions to make any of it easy for him."I'm not scared of you, Daniel and you better believe that I want you dead just as much as you want me gone too." I spat and looked at him with as much disgust as I could manage. But that was a lie, because I was terrified as hell. But he wanted me to be scared of him and I refused to give him the satisfaction."But don't come here and play the victim as though everything you ever truly did was for me and our child. No, Daniel! Everything you ever did was for you and you alone! You wanted more than you deserved and it was your greed, your disgusting desire for more that pushed you, not me, and definitely not Jeremiah!""You don't know anything! Just shut your mouth!""I know enough. More t
YARA's POV"You animal! How did I never see just how evil you actually are?" I spat, and smiled at me cruelly."Now you see it, and a bit too late too. Because I promise you that I'm going to be the very last person you see before you leave this world. I'm going to kill you, Yara. Then perhaps I could send that silly little pup of yours to join you for comfort."Blood rushed into my head when I heard the threat he made against my son, and I felt my heart beat fast in utter outrage."Not if I kill you first, you bloody son of a gun!" I swore and ran head first toward him, with my hands outstretched to grip his neck."B*tch." I heard him swear and he held out his hand to block me.But I was still able to get a hold of him. I shifted my hands into claws, and struck at every exposed flesh I could find, making him bleed as much as I could manage."Damn it, you little brat!" Daniel roared as he grabbed me by the neck and pushed me hard against the wall. "What? Did you think you could ever e
YARA's POVI looked around the room for a space to hide and left without a choice, rushed to hide under the bed, my heart beating against the floor pads as I listened to Daniel's footsteps raw closer to the room. Each step seemed louder than the last, echoing through my skull until I could barely hear anything over the frantic pounding of my own heart.About a minute later, he pushed open the room door, walked into the room, and stopped several feet away from the bed."Yara?!" He roared, and his voice was laced with irritation and anger. "I know you’re in here, Yara. Your scent is very strong, so just come out and stop playing hide and seek with me."I pressed my lips together and felt my heart rate increase when he walked away from the bed. But he seemed to be only pacing across the room."You're supposed to be dead, you dumb b*tch." I heard him mutter and caught the frustration in his voice. "What the hell went wrong? And where the hell is that little brat anyway?"He stopped moving
