LOGINLea's POV
The painful, loud sound of gut-wrenching screaming pulled me from sleep immediately. Ever since I found the evidence in Damian’s office, I've never been able to really sleep or function normally. I feared for my life with the fact that I don't even know who's next to get sold or killed by my brother, whom I seem to know nothing about. He's definitely not the same Dame who had taught me how to climb trees and ride bicycles as well as hold my breath underwater.
This is like someone else entirely.
I bolted upright, my heart already racing before my mind caught up. The servants' quarters were empty; all the other mattresses were obviously abandoned, with their blankets thrown back in a hurry.
More screams echoed through the pack house, followed by the unmistakable snarls and growling sound of fighting as well as the meaty thud of bodies hitting walls. What in the blood moon was going on?
I stumbled to the doorway and saw wolves running through the corridors while my brother’s Warriors dragged bleeding servants through the floor like they were sacks of trash. The sharp copper smell of blood was everywhere, and it was difficult to breathe.
"Get back inside!" A warrior I didn't recognize shoved me back into the room. "Stay there until someone comes for you."
The door slammed shut, followed by a lock click.
I pressed my ear against the wood, trying to understand what was happening; thankfully, fragments of conversation drifted through soon enough.
"Found them in the storage rooms. They had banned weapons."
"How many?"
"Fifteen, maybe twenty. They were low-ranking."
"The Alpha wants them in the cells; you're free to kill anyone who resists or fights going inside the cell. kill them." The voice added the last part gleefully.
My stomach turned to ice as realization crashed on me. It's the rebellion; Margot and the others had moved tonight instead of waiting. The plan was to wait and get more proof and support, but somehow they went on behind my back.
Hours crawled past, and gradually the sounds of fighting eventually faded to silence. I sat on my mattress, hugging my knees and trying my best not to give in to the tears threatening to fall from my eyes, while I thought about the vial still hidden underneath.
When the door finally opened, gray dawn light was seeping through the high window.
Garrett stood there, his face spattered with blood. "Get up. Alpha wants you ready to leave in twenty minutes."
"What happened? Where's Margot?"
"Dead. Along with the other traitors who thought they could challenge an Alpha." He grabbed my arm and hauled me to my feet. "You're lucky Damian still thinks you're useful; you'd be in the cells with the rest of them."
"I didn't know about any rebellion."
"Don't care." He shoved me toward the washroom. "Clean yourself up and fake being presentable, not like the rat you are."
I washed quickly with cold water, my hands shaking with uncertainty of the future and the fear of the way things turned out. Margot was dead, all her Co planners, all of them were dead.
Because they'd tried to expose Damian and failed.
When I came out, Garrett thrust a bag at me. "Your things. Not that you have much."
Inside was a single change of clothes and nothing else. I thought about the vial under my mattress. Should I take it? But Garrett was watching me too closely.
"Let's go wolfless, Transport's waiting."
He marched me through the pack house, where several bloodied bodies and some incomplete bodies were being dragged out of the main hall. Blood stained the usually white sparkling tiles, which were now bloodied with tears. Warriors stood guard at every corner, their expressions cold.
Damian waited by the main entrance, looking perfectly composed. Like he hadn't just ordered the execution of fifteen pack members.
"Lea. I trust you slept well?"
The casualness of it made my skin crawl. "Well enough."
“Good. I wanted to give you some final instructions before you leave." He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "When you arrive at Royal Shifts, you'll be respectful, even more obedient, and graciously accept whatever treatment Alpha Amreth gives you without complaint. Do you understand?"
"Yes." As long as I'm beyond your reach, I said in my head.
"If he asks about the Eel pack, you'll tell him everything is peaceful and prosperous. You'll not mention any internal pack matters." His black eyes bored into mine. "And if you do anything to embarrass this pack or jeopardize the alliance, I'll make sure what happened to those rebels looks merciful by comparison."
"I understand."
"Excellent." He stepped back, and his expression shifted to something almost pleasant. "Safe travels, sister. I'm sure you'll make us all very proud." It was a threat, and we both knew
Garrett grabbed my arm again and pulled me outside roughly, but not enough to leave marks on my exposed skin. Two other warriors waited by a black vehicle; they didn't bother to hide their distaste and contempt while glaring at me, despite being guards, and I was of alpha bloodline, but at least we would be out of each other's hair soon enough.
"This is what we're escorting? A wolf-less omega?" I swallowed the sharp retort at the tip of my tongue.
"Alpha's orders, Sam, and the instruction is to get her to Royal Shifts alive and intact with no visible scars." Garrett opened the back door. "Get in bitch."
I climbed in, and he slammed the door barely inches away from my bare feet before coming in through the other door, and he somehow managed to pull out silver chains from somewhere I didn't notice before.
"Hands."
"What? Why?"
"Because Alpha Amreth requested his bride to arrive in chains. Something about making sure everyone knows her place." Garrett's smile was cruel.
Alpha Amreth? My husband to be? Was this some cruel plot twist by the moon goddess? Was this my punishment for the death of Margot and other protesting wolves?
"Hold out your wrists, or I'll break them first."
I held out my hands, and the silver hissed as soon as it came in contact with my skin. It burned when it touched my skin, making me gasp. Garrett locked the chains tight enough to cut into my flesh.
"Perfect. Now you look the part."
Unfortunately, it didn't escape my notice that the freedom I so much desired might be even more painful and rough than my previous cage ever was.
AMRETH’S POV “Alpha, Rowan is here.”The moment these words came out of Marcus’s mouth, something inside of me went completely still. I felt like a blade that was waiting to be drawn. I didn’t say anything at first. I just stood up from my desk and pushed the chair back hard enough to make it scrape against the floor.“Where is he?” I asked.“The courtyard.”That was all I needed. I had already started walking before Marcus stopped talking. Rowan’s name was enough to leave a bitter taste in my mind. The last time I saw him was amid all the blood and chaos. My twin brother, who was in love with the woman after my heart.I still remembered how he had kidnapped her. My hands clenched into a fist. If we hadn’t found her that day, I wouldn’t have been able to handle being without her. My jaw tightened as I walked into the corridor. Guards straightened when they saw me, a nervous look on their faces. Maybe they could feel the anger radiating off my skin.Marcus kept a steady pace behind me
LEA’S POV “Do it again.”The old Mage’s voice rang through the entire clearing. I groaned as I looked at the woman who was standing in front of me, an unimpressed look plastered on her face. For someone who looked old enough to spend her days sitting in a rocking chair and knitting sweaters, she had the cruelty of a drill sergeant.I was beginning to question whether she just enjoyed watching me sweat my ass off.The clearing where we trained sat deep in the outskirts of the territory, right where her cottage was. Trees surrounded us from every direction, the branches acting like a natural canopy from the blazing hot sun. Sunlight filtered through the leaves in scattered rays of light, casting golden patterns across the grass. It looked breathtaking, but that didn’t make the training feel any easier.I wiped sweat away from my forehead and gazed hard at the flowers growing at my feet. The old mage folded her arms.“Well? What are you waiting for?” she asked.I glanced at her. “I am t
ROWAN’S POV The journey to Downfall Ridge took three whole exhausting days of crossing through rough terrain and narrow mountain paths, which had dense forests that seemed to make it their life's mission to slow us down at every given opportunity. By the time the Ridge came into view, every wolf travelling with me looked as tired as I felt. But I didn’t complain because a part of me told me that we were close to uncovering the truth. The burned letter remained tucked inside my jacket, and over the last few days, I had read it so much that I practically memorised every word in it.And no matter how much I had read it, none of it seemed to make sense. Why was he deliberately keeping these captives alive? And more importantly, who were these captives? The cold wind whipped against my face as I guided my horse onto a rocky hill. I looked down below, and my eyes landed on what looked like an old fortress, surrounded by cliffs and thick forest. The structure looked so old, it was ancient.
AMRETH’S POV Something was bothering Lea, and I had noticed it for three days. She hadn’t told me anything, but I couldn’t help but notice that she had been quieter than usual. She was more distracted as well and very distant. Every time I saw her, she looked like she was lost in thought, thinking about something I couldn’t comprehend. It didn’t seem like she was just distracted or exhausted; it felt like something heavier.I had tried asking her what was wrong, but she always found a way to avoid answering it. Three days went by and by the fourth day, I was tired of her ignoring me, especially when I could basically see that her thoughts were eating away at her.I stood at the edge of the training grounds with my arms crossed. My eyes were fixed intently on Lea. The afternoon sun was shining down hard, making shadows pour across the floor. Lea was standing several yards away. She was crouched down over a cluster of small flowers, staring so intensely at them that I choked back a lau
ROWAN’S POV The more I dug into Damian’s past, the less sense any of it made. I expected to find an answer that tied everything together. Maybe this was another hidden enemy, or a conspiracy. Some long-buried secret that would explain why the man whom I had trusted for years was somehow dead long before anyone realized it.Instead, everyone I found only led me to more questions, and I was getting sick and tired of it.I sat on a horseback at the edge of a dense forest, my eyes locked on the crumbling cabin that was hidden between a few trees. The cabin looked abandoned, and most of the walls and part of the roof looked like they had collapsed years ago. Yet, according to the information I gathered, Damian used to come here rather frequently.Or at least, the man pretending to be Damian did.The wind blew, stirring the trees as I dismounted from my horse and handed the reins to one of my guards.“Do you think there’s actually something in there?” he asked.I shrugged, looking at the c
KAEL’S POVWhen I stepped back into my territory, I was already in a foul mood. I thought maybe I would be able to wash this irritating feeling with a few drinks and a good night’s sleep. But this feeling has already stalled beneath my skin, gnawing at me until I solve the issue, making me feel this way.The guards stationed at the entrance to the pack house lowered their heads as I passed. I kept my eyes forward, boots striking the stone path leading into the pack house, and my steps felt heavier than the last. Mirabeth’s face immediately flashed in my mind.I hated how she was so stubborn, stupid, and obsessed with useless things. That woman had always been ruled by her emotions, and that was her greatest weakness. I pushed the doors of the pack house open, and servants immediately scrambled out of my way.A few advisors who were gathered near the entrance straightened when they saw me. One of them stepped forward.“Alpha Kael.”I loosened the button on my collar as I kept walking.
LEA’S POVThe day started like it always did. Cold sank into my feet as I swung my legs down from the bed. I could feel the usual faint ache in my body that never truly went away, and the quiet realisation that there would be more work to do despite the fact that I was already so exhausted.I sighe
Mirabeth’s POVI stood by the window of my chambers and watched the training grounds below. My thoughts kept returning to the same moment in the corridor earlier that day. I saw the way Amreth caught and stared at her.It had only lasted a few seconds, but it was enough for me to notice things tha
Lea's POVThe drive to Royal Shifts took hours, and with each passing mile and hour, the chains grew heavier, burning my wrists. The smell of burning flesh filled the car, but they all ignored me, talking about how fun it was to kill the rebellious wolves. The spot where the silver bit into my skin
Lea's POVLife is nothing without risk or so I told myself as I made the decision to stay and find evidence and answers to margot's claim and I knew I wont be able to forgive myself if something happens to my packmates, I knew they all hated me but my parents had loved everyone and I owe it to them
