LOGINLea's POV
The drive to Royal Shifts took hours, and with each passing mile and hour, the chains grew heavier, burning my wrists. The smell of burning flesh filled the car, but they all ignored me, talking about how fun it was to kill the rebellious wolves. The spot where the silver bit into my skin was bleeding as well.
The warriors kept talking amongst themselves, ignoring me completely despite my low, whimpering cries from the pain and loss of blood. They discussed the rebellion as if it were entertainment.
"Did you see Marcus try to shift? Man, that was Pathetic. The Alpha tore his throat out before he completed the transformation."
"Margot was worse, see how she begged for her life at the end, like anyone would pity her useless existence."
I closed my eyes and tried not to listen. I tried not to think about Margot's pale face or the way she'd tried to warn me. Eventually, we crossed into Royal Shifts territory and, strangely.
enough I felt it immediately. The air itself felt different in a heavy way; everything about this new territory screams Danger.
The pack grounds were more massive than our pack grounds, and their buildings looked more like fortresses than homes. I couldn't help but notice there were Warriors everywhere, and all of them radiated power that made my skin prickle.
The vehicle stopped in front of the largest building I'd ever seen. ‘The Alpha hall’ was written boldly above it, before I could complete my appraisal, Garrett yanked me out of the vehicle. My legs were numb from sitting so long, and I stumbled. He roughly caught me by the chains and jerked me upright.
"Walk, and try not to fall on your face. You're representing the Eel pack now."
The other two warriors flanked me as Garrett dragged me up the steps and through massive doors. I prayed and hoped my new alpha would be against this new treatment and treat me like the princess that I was.
The hall inside was packed with hundreds of intimidating wolves, and they were all turning to stare as we entered. Their eyes swept over me, and I saw the same expression on every face raging from Disgust to amusement, and not surprising was, a look of contempt.
But I was supposed to be their Luna…
Garrett pulled me down the center aisle, my chains clinked with each step, and my wrists were bleeding even more freely now, leaving drops of blood on the polished floor.
At the far end of the hall, sitting on a raised platform, was AlphaAmreth.
He was younger than I'd expected, in what looks like his late twenties, with black hair and sharp features that would have been handsome if not for the coldness in his dark blue eyes. He sat perfectly still, watching our approach with an expression I couldn't read.
Ten feet from the platform, Garrett forced me to my knees; the rough, unexpected impact sent pain shooting through my legs.
"The peace bride from the Eel pack, Alpha Amreth." Garrett's voice rang through the hall. "Delivered as requested."
Silence, there was total, complete heavy silence.
I kept my eyes on the floor, my heart pounding so hard I thought everyone must be able to hear it.
Then I felt a flutter in my chest, slowly at first, then it increased into a strong lurch that was not the usual ache. This was different and somehow stronger, like a rope suddenly pulling taut between two points.
I looked up without meaning to, and strangely enough, AlphaAmreth had gone completely rigid. His hands gripped the armrests of his chair so hard the wood creaked while his eyes were locked on me with an intensity that made my breath catch.
For a moment, neither of us moved; it was like the noise around us faded away temporarily.
Then his expression suddenly shifted into something awful. It switched from recognition to rage and something else I couldn't name.
"No." The word came out rough, almost pained. "This is not possible."
Garrett shifted beside me. "Alpha?"
Amreth stood abruptly. I could feel every wolf in the hall tense, and the air ceased in the room. I could feel the power rolling off him in waves, making the air itself feel thick and hard to breathe.
He descended from the platform with slow, deliberate steps, all alpha and masculine aura. When he finally reached me, he crouched down so we were eye level.
This close, I could see his eyes weren't just dark blue. They were almost black, with something wild lurking behind them.
"What is your name?" His voice was low, dangerous.
"Lea, Lea Blackthorne."
"And who sent you here, Lea Blackthorne?"
"My brother. Alpha Damian Of Eel."
Something flickered across his face. "Your brother sent you. His own blood. Wolf-less and weak." He reached out and grabbed my chin, tilting my face up. "Do you know what you are to me?"
I couldn't speak. Could barely breathe with him this close, and that strange rope in my chest was pulling tighter and tighter.
"You're my mate." He said it loud enough for the entire hall to hear. "The Moon Goddess chose you for me."
Gasps rippled through the crowd. I heard whispers of shock and confusion; even Garrett's gasp was unmistakable.
Amreth's grip on my chin tightened almost to the point of pain, then he released my face suddenly, like it scorched his hand, before standing upright, facing his people, then looking back at me with barely hidden disgust.
"I, Amreth Dale, Alpha of Royal Shifts Pack, reject you, Lea Blackthorne, as my mate."
The words hit like a physical blow. That rope in my chest snapped, and pain exploded through me. I couldn't control my gasp as I doubled over, clutching at my sternum.
"I reject this bond." His voice was cold now, emotionless. "I reject this mockery the Moon Goddess has given me. You are not worthy to stand beside me and will never be the true Luna of this pack."
The pain was unbearable. Like something vital was being torn out of me, I couldn't breathe, couldn't think past the agony radiating from my chest.
Through the haze, I heard footsteps coming nearer, then a woman's voice, sharp and pleased, rang through the shocked crowd.
"Well. That was dramatic."
I forced my eyes open and saw a beautiful blonde woman step onto the platform beside Damian. She wore elegant clothes and a smile that didn't reach her green eyes.
"This is Mirabeth," Damian announced to the hall. "My chosen Luna. The woman who will stand beside me and lead this pack."
Mirabeth looked down at me with open satisfaction. "You poor thing. All that hope in your eyes just a moment ago, did you really think someone like you could be Luna? That's adorable."
The pain in my chest was starting to fade, leaving behind a hollow ache worse than anything physical.
Damian turned away from me like I didn't exist. "Garrett. Your Alpha sent this girl as a peace offering, and I'm honoring that. She'll work in the pack house doing whatever menial labor is required." He paused. "But make sure everyone understands. She is nothing with no rank and zero status. Just another unlucky servant who happens to be here by political necessity.
AMRETH’S POV “Alpha, Rowan is here.”The moment these words came out of Marcus’s mouth, something inside of me went completely still. I felt like a blade that was waiting to be drawn. I didn’t say anything at first. I just stood up from my desk and pushed the chair back hard enough to make it scrape against the floor.“Where is he?” I asked.“The courtyard.”That was all I needed. I had already started walking before Marcus stopped talking. Rowan’s name was enough to leave a bitter taste in my mind. The last time I saw him was amid all the blood and chaos. My twin brother, who was in love with the woman after my heart.I still remembered how he had kidnapped her. My hands clenched into a fist. If we hadn’t found her that day, I wouldn’t have been able to handle being without her. My jaw tightened as I walked into the corridor. Guards straightened when they saw me, a nervous look on their faces. Maybe they could feel the anger radiating off my skin.Marcus kept a steady pace behind me
LEA’S POV “Do it again.”The old Mage’s voice rang through the entire clearing. I groaned as I looked at the woman who was standing in front of me, an unimpressed look plastered on her face. For someone who looked old enough to spend her days sitting in a rocking chair and knitting sweaters, she had the cruelty of a drill sergeant.I was beginning to question whether she just enjoyed watching me sweat my ass off.The clearing where we trained sat deep in the outskirts of the territory, right where her cottage was. Trees surrounded us from every direction, the branches acting like a natural canopy from the blazing hot sun. Sunlight filtered through the leaves in scattered rays of light, casting golden patterns across the grass. It looked breathtaking, but that didn’t make the training feel any easier.I wiped sweat away from my forehead and gazed hard at the flowers growing at my feet. The old mage folded her arms.“Well? What are you waiting for?” she asked.I glanced at her. “I am t
ROWAN’S POV The journey to Downfall Ridge took three whole exhausting days of crossing through rough terrain and narrow mountain paths, which had dense forests that seemed to make it their life's mission to slow us down at every given opportunity. By the time the Ridge came into view, every wolf travelling with me looked as tired as I felt. But I didn’t complain because a part of me told me that we were close to uncovering the truth. The burned letter remained tucked inside my jacket, and over the last few days, I had read it so much that I practically memorised every word in it.And no matter how much I had read it, none of it seemed to make sense. Why was he deliberately keeping these captives alive? And more importantly, who were these captives? The cold wind whipped against my face as I guided my horse onto a rocky hill. I looked down below, and my eyes landed on what looked like an old fortress, surrounded by cliffs and thick forest. The structure looked so old, it was ancient.
AMRETH’S POV Something was bothering Lea, and I had noticed it for three days. She hadn’t told me anything, but I couldn’t help but notice that she had been quieter than usual. She was more distracted as well and very distant. Every time I saw her, she looked like she was lost in thought, thinking about something I couldn’t comprehend. It didn’t seem like she was just distracted or exhausted; it felt like something heavier.I had tried asking her what was wrong, but she always found a way to avoid answering it. Three days went by and by the fourth day, I was tired of her ignoring me, especially when I could basically see that her thoughts were eating away at her.I stood at the edge of the training grounds with my arms crossed. My eyes were fixed intently on Lea. The afternoon sun was shining down hard, making shadows pour across the floor. Lea was standing several yards away. She was crouched down over a cluster of small flowers, staring so intensely at them that I choked back a lau
ROWAN’S POV The more I dug into Damian’s past, the less sense any of it made. I expected to find an answer that tied everything together. Maybe this was another hidden enemy, or a conspiracy. Some long-buried secret that would explain why the man whom I had trusted for years was somehow dead long before anyone realized it.Instead, everyone I found only led me to more questions, and I was getting sick and tired of it.I sat on a horseback at the edge of a dense forest, my eyes locked on the crumbling cabin that was hidden between a few trees. The cabin looked abandoned, and most of the walls and part of the roof looked like they had collapsed years ago. Yet, according to the information I gathered, Damian used to come here rather frequently.Or at least, the man pretending to be Damian did.The wind blew, stirring the trees as I dismounted from my horse and handed the reins to one of my guards.“Do you think there’s actually something in there?” he asked.I shrugged, looking at the c
KAEL’S POVWhen I stepped back into my territory, I was already in a foul mood. I thought maybe I would be able to wash this irritating feeling with a few drinks and a good night’s sleep. But this feeling has already stalled beneath my skin, gnawing at me until I solve the issue, making me feel this way.The guards stationed at the entrance to the pack house lowered their heads as I passed. I kept my eyes forward, boots striking the stone path leading into the pack house, and my steps felt heavier than the last. Mirabeth’s face immediately flashed in my mind.I hated how she was so stubborn, stupid, and obsessed with useless things. That woman had always been ruled by her emotions, and that was her greatest weakness. I pushed the doors of the pack house open, and servants immediately scrambled out of my way.A few advisors who were gathered near the entrance straightened when they saw me. One of them stepped forward.“Alpha Kael.”I loosened the button on my collar as I kept walking.
LEA’S POV I watched as Mirabeth fell to the ground on her side. The courtyard had gone silent again, and I stood there, breathing heavily. Mirabeth winced and looked up at me, anger still burning in her eyes. I kept a cold look on my face as I looked down at her.“I won’t let you do whatever you wa
MIRABETH’S POV I couldn’t stop thinking about how an insignificant servant like this was now the center of everything. I hated how Amreth was always looking for her, how he didn't even try to hide his affection for her anymore. Something bitter twisted in my chest, and rage clouded my mind, and I

AMRETH’S POV Reports and documents were spread across my desk, but they remained untouched. I had been staring at the documents for over ten minutes now without even reading them because my attention kept drifting, no matter how much I tried to focus.
