The Heart of Spring beat once, the ground answered. Roots ripped up through the earth like spears, splitting the clearing into jagged pieces. Trees groaned and twisted, branches lowering like arms. The green-eyed things stepped out of the dark.

They weren’t wolves. They weren’t men.

Bodies of bark and vine, limbs too long, chests cracked open with glowing green light. Faces that might have been kind once.

Sylva’s breath caught.

“The Verdant Guard,” she said. “Sworn to the Garden Circle.

  • MINE BEFORE THE BLOOD MOON    The Name Beneath the World

The stairs didn’t end. They spiraled down into dark, stone slick and cold. The air got colder with every step, even though Autumn was above them. Thea counted to keep herself steady. Kael walked beside her, hand on her back. Behind them, Sylva, Diana, Auren, and the Moonhold warriors kept the same pace. No one spoke. The walls were covered in carvings. Four shapes in a circle. Snow. Sprout. Flame. Leaf. And in the middle of them, a figure. Massive. No face. Just darkness with too many limbs. Diana ran her fingers over the stone. “This isn’t Guardian work,” she said. “This is older. Older than the Order.” “What’s it say?” Kael asked. “The first sealing,” Diana said. “Not by Guardians. By something before them.” Thea stopped. “The Hearts weren’t made,” she said. “They were inherited.” The deeper they went, the thinner the air felt. Kael blinked. “Why are we” He shook his head, “The stairs. Right.” Diana looked at Auren. “You’re I’m sorry, what was your name again?” Auren frown

  • MINE BEFORE THE BLOOD MOON    The Door Beneath the Roots

The black leaves stopped falling, for one breath the Redwood Valleys were silent. Then the ground pulsed, amber light under the roots. Mira’s head snapped up, "The Heart, it’s not listening to me anymore." Thea’s mark burned, "What do you mean." "A Keeper guides, but when corruption sits long enough the Heart starts deciding for itself" Kael asked, "What did it choose?" Mira closed her eyes "What to remember" All around them the emptied people stirred, a woman in the square gasped. "Maren," an old man fell to his knees. "I buried that," memories came back fast and unkind. A mother remembering the day she lost her daughter. A warrior remembering the order he failed to give. The Heart wasn’t healing, it was dumping everything at once. The ground cracked A thin line of amber light ran between the roots like a vein. Thea’s moon mark flared, and the First Crown Fragment went hot . The map slammed into her mind. Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn, four points, and under them connect

  • MINE BEFORE THE BLOOD MOON    The Heart That Hungers

Dusk at the Temple of the Unburning Flame. The ash had stopped falling. The people of the mountain watched them ride out, no cheering, no tears, just quiet. Thea could feel the Heart of Summer behind her, sleeping in the stone. Faint, but there. Her moon mark was warm again. The map flashed once in her mind. Winter: wounded, blue. Spring: sleeping, green. Summer: dim, gold. Autumn: awake, amber. And moving. Not pulsing. Walking. Toward them. They didn’t talk for the first hour. Kael’s hand found hers twice and let go. Like he was checking. Sylva rode with her eyes on the road. Diana was counting. Auren was listening to nothing. They passed fields that were learning how to be green again. Crops pushed up, twisted, then straightened. Some didn’t. On the road they met people going the other way. Carrying nothing. “Redwood Valleys,” an old man said. “Don’t go. People are leaving.” “Attacked?” Kael asked. The man shook his head. “No. They just forget why they’re there

  • MINE BEFORE THE BLOOD MOON    Ashen Skies

The Whispering Forest didn’t make a sound when they left it. No birds. No wind. Just the quiet of a place holding its breath. Thea rode in front. Kael rode beside her. His hand kept finding hers, not for comfort, for proof. The bond was back, warm, but her mark was still cold. Behind them, Sylva hadn’t spoken since the chamber. Diana was mapping in her head. Auren was watching the trees. The Moonhold warriors were bruised, tired, and moving anyway. “The Ashen Peaks,” Sylva said finally. “Three days if we ride hard. Less if the corruption has already spread.” “Has it?” Kael asked. Sylva looked at the sky. It was wrong. The clouds had a yellow edge, like old paper. “Yes.” They didn’t make camp the first night. They didn’t make camp the second. On the third morning the mountains came into view. The Ashen Peaks were supposed to be gold. Sun on stone, wildflowers, eagles. Instead they were grey. Ash fell like snow. The air tasted like metal. And the Heart of Summer was screamin

  • MINE BEFORE THE BLOOD MOON    The Heart of Spring screamed

The sound wasn’t sound. It was a wound torn open in the air. The chamber shook. Roots thrashed and slammed against the walls, spraying sap and dirt. Thea didn’t let go. Her hand was still on the root around Kael’s wrist. Sylva dropped to her knees. “It’s not attacking us,” she said, voice shaking. “It’s reacting. The corruption is inside the core.” The scream kept going, and with it the light in the seed fractured. Kael’s breath hitched. The vines were drinking him. Thea could feel it through the bond, fear first, sharp and cold. Then something else slid in behind it. Visions. Moonhold burning. Black sky. His people running and falling. And Thea, standing alone on a mountain of stone with the Crown on her head and no one beside her. A voice, low and reasonable: Let go. Give yourself to the Heart. One life for all of them. That’s what Alphas do. Kael’s grip on the seed loosened a fraction. Thea saw it. “No,” she said. “That’s not you. That’s what it wants you to think.” His e

Sworn to protect this place.” Auren lifted his blade. “Then something changed them.” Sylva looked at the corruption crawling under their skin. “No,” she whispered. “Someone did.”They charged. Kael moved first. “Circle!” The Moonhold warriors slammed together, shields out, making a ring around Thea, Diana, Auren. But Kael didn’t stand behind them. He stepped to Thea’s side, sword already out. The first guardian hit the line. Steel bit bark. It should have dropped. Instead vines knitted ov
