I strutted into the house, coat over one arm, leather bag in the other. I walked up the stairs to my bedroom. The moment I lowered myself onto the edge of the bed, my mind flashed back, back to the interrogation I had with Marcus a few hours ago before I left the office to go meet up with a woman whose son was in custody.

“Bro, I know you… Behind that tight jaw of yours, you could barely hurt a fly… Or are you telling me you want to start with your own blood?” He smirked.

Each word he said was

SAMANTHA; “Alex,” I mumbled under my breath, blinking my eyes to be sure he hadn't just walked out of my imagination. Maybe I was the only one seeing him. Seeing this perfect dark suit that sat on him, broad shoulders filling the doorway. He stood out immediately. His eyes scanned the room until they locked on mine. Surprise flashed across his face, he clearly hadn’t expected a party. Mr. Richard’s voice rose. “Detective Thorne?” That was the confirmation I needed to know he was real. He was at this party…. my homecoming party. Alex tugged at his tie, looking slightly uncomfortable, but he walked forward with steady steps. The crowd parted. He stopped in front of us, eyes only on me. “I wasn’t expecting this,” he said quietly. “I came to speak with you.” He took a deep breath and continued, voice raw. “I’m sorry. I left angry. I left without giving you a chance to explain. I was hurt and scared… I thought I’d lost you again. But I should have stayed. I should have liste

I stood at the top of the grand staircase, heart fluttering against my ribs. The champagne gold dress hugged my body gently, the fabric cool and silky against my skin. Crystal chandeliers overhead cast warm golden light that danced across the marble floors and the guests below. Soft classical music floated through the air, mixing with the low hum of conversation, the clink of champagne glasses, and the faint scent of fresh roses and expensive perfume.I placed one hand on the smooth banister and the other protectively over my rounded belly. Every step down the stairs felt surreal, like I was walking into a dream I never dared to have. The first day I appeared at that doorstep flashed back to my mind, I stood there with those cheap luggage of mine. And when that huge oak door was pulled open, my world had stopped, I had seen who I wasn't meant to see there. But today was different. I was being…. Celebrated in this same house. In this same house where I almost lost myself completely,

I leaned back against the soft headboard, one hand resting on the curve of my belly. The penthouse buzzed with quiet energy downstairs… footsteps, the clink of glassware, the low murmur of voices as staff moved through the halls carrying flowers and string lights. Preparations for tomorrow evening’s homecoming party were everywhere. Ribbons, fresh arrangements of white roses, and soft gold banners that read “Welcome Home, Elma,” in an elegant script. I could hear Mia’s laughter echoing from somewhere near the living room, high and bright, the sound of her little feet running across the floors and videos playing loudly from the tablet Victoria had got her. She had been here with Aunt Linda for a few days now, soaking up every bit of this new life like it was made of sunshine. I smiled softly, picturing her in that yellow dress she loved, tablet in hand as she raced off again from my bedroom for the twentieth time this morning. But it wasn’t just seeing Mia healthy and full of energy

I leaned back against the soft headboard, rubbing my sleepy eyes with the heels of my palms. My body still felt heavy, like it needed a few more hours to remember how mornings worked in the penthouse. I had lain awake for a long time last night, staring at the ceiling, letting everything from the past weeks settle in my bones. Now the penthouse felt different… warmer, fuller, like it had been waiting for me to come home as Elma.A soft knock sounded on the door.“Come in,” I called, my voice still rough from sleep. The door opened quietly. Victoria stepped inside, her blonde hair loose over one shoulder, wearing a simple cream robe that made her look effortlessly elegant even first thing in the morning. She carried two mugs, steam curling up from them.“Good morning, Elma,” she said, her voice light and warm. She crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed, handing me one of the mugs. The scent of vanilla and coffee filled the air.I took it with both hands, the warmth seeping in

“You should be celebrating, Alex,” Mom’s voice cut through the silence of my bedroom. “Not brooding over some…. Pictures.”I jerked at the sound and slammed the laptop shut, the click of the lid echoing sharply in the quiet room. My heart hammered against my ribs like it wanted out. How long had she been standing there in the doorway? I hadn’t heard her footsteps on the floor. My screen had been full of those few pictures I’d dug up online, old ones, grainy shots from some family gathering, a girls-only outing, and one with her little sister.Just a handful, but each one pulled at me hard. Lena’s smile in them, the way her eyes caught the light. I swallowed, trying to push the image away.I looked up slowly. Mom’s face filled the space behind me. I looked up; the window by the side showed a dark sky, faint stars behind thin clouds. Time had slipped away on me again. I’d sat there for hours, maybe, scrolling and thinking about Lena. Had I done right by her? Was she mad, or just disa

Bending down had become a battle Samantha no longer attempted unless she absolutely had to. At almost eight months pregnant, even putting on her sandals required a deep breath and a silent prayer, or actual help.So she sat comfortably on the wooden stool beneath the shade of the mango tree, one hand resting on her rounded stomach.A smile lingered on her lips, the old house felt alive again. Not just occupied like when she first got here, everywhere was too calm and too quiet.Mia's laughter rang through the backyard as the little girl chased a butterfly that clearly had no interest in being caught."Come back!" Mia squealed, yet the butterfly ignored her, she gasped dramatically. "You're very rude!"Aunt Linda laughed from beside the clothesline. "Who are you talking to now?""The butterfly, of course!” She snapped. “I wonder why it's running away from me.” That earned another laugh from Aunt Linda and Samantha."I missed this," Samantha said, shaking her head."Missed what?" Aunt L

Then he lifted his head. “Samantha Harper,” he read slowly, the name heavy on his lips.“My name,” I whispered under my breath before he even spoke. But the words still hit like a stone when they came out.The result showed my fingerprint on the knife, strength drained from my body instantly. My sh

Silence pressed down on the room like a heavy blanket. The slow hum of the AC was the only available sound. No one moved. No one spoke. Just eyes darting at each other. My mind kept drifting back to the clear ziplock bag lying on the center table earlier, the knife inside it stained dark red. The s

The tiny clock on the nightstand chimed seven, I slapped the snooze button, the sound died instantly. I casually closed the book staring in my face, the only thing that had kept me sane as time went by, I had picked it from one of the shelves, something about ‘Men and bitches’.Eyes puckered in fr

“What was he doing here?” I furrowed my brows, carefully drew on the transparent bathroom linen, enough to cover a bit, his shadow still visible to me.“Move away now, or I'll scream the loudest!” I felt my blood surge. My voice cracked, louder than I expected.I stretched. This time, his shadow w
