[THE BROTHER'S GAZE]

I felt him before I even saw him.

Across the grand hall of the Yu estate, someone was watching me with a quiet intensity that made my pulse quicken. Julian noticed too, his hand tightening subtly around mine as if reminding me that I belonged only to him. My stomach twisted. Nothing in this house was ever simple.

The evening had started like any other: a formal reception, guests in glittering gowns and sharp tuxedos, polite laughter echoing through the marble floors. Julian was the perfect host, charming and graceful, drawing admiration wherever he went. People whispered, “Siya talaga yung perfect couple,” and I smiled, though my lips felt stiff. Every word, every compliment, reminded me I was merely a part of his image.

And yet… that gaze across the room drew me in.

I tried to ignore it, focusing instead on Julian’s hand lightly brushing against mine. “Maris, okay ka lang ba?” he murmured, his voice low, smooth, calm. The warmth in his tone should have been comforting, but it wasn’t. I could feel the subtle command behind it, the quiet dominance that made my chest tighten.

“Yes, Julian,” I said softly, forcing a smile. My fingers flexed instinctively, betraying my nerves.

He leaned slightly closer, and the faint scent of his cologne brushed against me—dark cedar with a hint of something sharp, like a warning. “Good. I like it when my wife looks calm. It makes me… proud.” He smiled, and I swallowed hard. Behind the casual words, there was a tether, invisible but unbreakable.

That was when I saw him clearly: Adrian Yu.

He was leaning against the far doorway, arms crossed casually, his dark eyes fixed on me. I froze, my heart skipping. He wasn’t moving, wasn’t speaking, just… watching. Not like a stranger or a guest. He observed like he already knew me—the real me, the one Julian controlled and polished for the public eye.

My breath hitched slightly, and Julian noticed. His hand lingered on mine, just long enough for me to feel the protective, possessive pressure. “Who’s he?” I asked cautiously, keeping my voice neutral, careful not to betray curiosity or fear.

Julian’s smile was smooth, almost disarming. “That’s Adrian. My older brother. He’s… very particular about who I spend my time with.” His gaze sharpened slightly, like a shadow passing over his face. “Be careful where you look, Maris.”

I nodded, hiding the thrill of unease swirling inside me. Adrian’s stare wasn’t threatening—at least not yet—but there was an undeniable intensity, a quiet obsession that made me shiver despite myself. Every movement, every glance, seemed deliberate, measured.

I excused myself under the pretense of checking the flowers along the wall, my heels clicking softly against the marble. Adrian’s eyes followed me, unwavering. He didn’t speak, didn’t smile, just… waited. My pulse raced, part fear, part something else I couldn’t yet name.

Julian’s hand brushed my lower back as I returned to his side. “Are you enjoying yourself?” he asked, voice low.

I nodded, though my mind was elsewhere. “Yes… very much,” I whispered.

He tilted his head slightly, as if studying me, his hand tightening briefly. “Good. I like it when you enjoy yourself… with me.” The words were soft, intimate, and yet full of a warning I couldn’t ignore.

Through the evening, I felt the invisible triangle forming. Julian’s presence was constant, controlling, tethering me to him. And Adrian… he lingered in the edges of my vision, a silent shadow, observing, knowing.

During dinner, I caught Julian’s subtle glances, his protective instincts barely concealed behind calm smiles. Adrian sat at the head of the room, near the fireplace, his posture relaxed but deliberate. Every so often, our eyes met across the room. His gaze wasn’t idle; it was measured, piercing, intimate even, as though he could see the weight of Julian’s ownership pressing on me.

At one point, Julian spoke quietly, leaning toward me. “You seem… distracted,” he murmured. His hand brushed mine again, but this time it was firmer, a silent claim.

I lowered my eyes. “I’m fine,” I whispered, feeling my cheeks flush. I didn’t want him to know I noticed Adrian. Didn’t want him to realize that someone else had unsettled me.

Julian’s gaze darkened slightly, the faintest flicker of jealousy crossing his eyes. He leaned back, almost casual, but I knew better. He controlled every motion, every glance, every word. And he noticed everything—even my tiny reactions.

After dinner, the guests had left, leaving the mansion quiet except for the soft hum of the chandeliers. I was helping Julian place a folded napkin on the table when I felt it—the unmistakable presence of Adrian behind us, closer than before.

I froze. Julian sensed it too. His hand rested lightly on my back, guiding me forward, protective yet possessive.

“You’ve been staring all evening,” Julian murmured, his voice smooth but edged with warning.

“I…” I hesitated, unsure if I should admit the truth. “…I noticed someone.” My heart raced as I spoke.

Julian’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. “I know,” he said simply. “Adrian has always… watched closely. Be careful. You don’t know what his intentions might be.”

Adrian’s presence wasn’t just unsettling—it was magnetic. I wanted to look, to meet his gaze fully, but Julian’s hand on my waist reminded me that I was tethered. My pulse raced for reasons I refused to understand, a mix of fear, anticipation, and forbidden curiosity.

Later, as I poured wine into our crystal glasses in the private lounge, I felt the room shift. Adrian’s shadow moved closer to the doorway again. He didn’t speak, didn’t approach. But the weight of his gaze pressed against me in a way that Julian’s calm dominance never had. It was different—intense, personal, intimate.

Julian watched me carefully, his dark eyes following every motion. “Maris,” he murmured, “you should sit. You’ve been on your feet too long.” His hand rested on my lower back, guiding me gently.

I obeyed, but I couldn’t help glancing toward the doorway. Adrian’s figure lingered there, unmoving, observing. My heart skipped. He wasn’t smiling, but there was a faint curl at the edge of his lips, like he knew something dangerous—and thrilling—that I did not.

Julian noticed my glance. His gaze narrowed slightly, subtle but sharp, a silent reminder that everything here belonged to him. I swallowed hard, aware of the tension stretching across the room like a taut wire.

I wanted to speak, to break the silence, to ask Adrian what he wanted. But something held me back, a mix of fear and fascination. And I realized that Julian wasn’t just controlling my actions—he was controlling my attention, my focus, even my curiosity.

The night ended with Julian guiding me to the suite. His touch was light but possessive, a reminder that I was his—body, mind, and presence. I entered the room, trying to calm the rapid beat of my heart. But even in the quiet of the suite, I felt Adrian’s eyes on me.

He didn’t enter. He didn’t speak. But I could feel him. Watching. Waiting. Calculating.

And then I understood: nothing in this house was simple, nothing was safe, and my heart—though tethered to Julian—was beginning to notice a dangerous pull elsewhere.

I closed the door softly, and in that quiet moment, I realized the game had begun. I was caught between two men: one who claimed me as his possession, and one who… I wasn’t sure what he wanted, but I knew it was dangerous.

And in the shadow of the room, Adrian’s faint presence lingered like a promise of obsession, desire, and secrets yet to be revealed.

Maristella is torn between Julian’s control and Adrian’s subtle obsession, her heart caught in a dangerous triangle. The chapter ends with Adrian watching from the shadows, leaving readers desperate to know what he will do next.
