“Who did this to me?” I whispered.
My skin burned. I sat up fast under the sheets. Huge red bite marks covered my neck and arms. There were so many. My inner wolf was shaking. I felt so small and so weak.
What happened last night?
A flash of a dark room hit my mind. A giant wolf with thick black fur had pinned me down. He did not care that I cried and begged him to stop. He just bit my neck and claimed me for himself. He took my pure wolf spark away.
I forced my legs to move. They shook like jelly as I stood up on the cold floor. I had to find the beast who did this to me.
But the room was totally empty. The only thing left behind on the pillow was a silver claw earring. It smelled like heavy pine and rain.
Did he drop this?
I hid the silver claw deep inside my pocket. I turned around to run out, but the big door flew open with a loud crash.
Chief Obinna Okafor, my father, stormed into the room. His male partner, Kieran Ashford, held his hand tightly, looking worried. Right behind them was my twin sister, Ayomide.
“Look at you!” Chief Obinna yelled, his voice shaking the walls. “You stayed out all night away from the Okafor Moonfang Clan! We thought a rogue wolf killed you, but you were just playing with some random beast!”
Ayomide fake cried and hid behind Kieran. “You went too far this time, Zanele! Dad and Kieran almost went crazy looking for you in the whole Ravenmoor Moon City!”
I shook my head fast. Tears came to my eyes.
“No, Dad, please listen to me,” I said. “I did not want this.”
“Have you no shame at all?” Chief Obinna pointed his finger at my neck. “Look at those dark marks on your skin! You still dare to lie to my face?”
“Someone set me up,” I gasped. “I fell asleep and then a wolf came in. I do not know who he was.”
Chief Obinna did not care about my words. He grabbed a heavy stone bowl from the table and threw it right at my head.
Thud!
A sharp pain hit my forehead. Warm red blood started running down my face and dripping onto my clothes. I grew very scared.
“I just gave your hand to Alpha Jacob Quinn!” Chief Obinna roared. “He is a strong leader! Now you are not pure anymore! How can I tell him his new mate has another wolf’s scent on her?”
My eyes went wide. I could not breathe.
“Alpha Quinn is almost sixty years old!” I screamed. “His last three mates all died under bad mysteries! You want me to die too?”
“You should be happy he even wants an omega like you,” Chief Obinna said. He turned away from me and looked at Ayomide. “Thank the Moon Goddess that Ayomide is good. You two have the same face, but you are bad. You bring shame to our clan name.”
Ayomide looked at my bleeding face and smiled a mean smile. “Do not forget she grew up in the poor wild woods, Dad. She does not know how real wolves act.”
My heart broke into tiny pieces. I looked at my own father and my own sister. They hated me. They did not care that I was hurting.
Ten months later, I lay in a small room on the edge of the city. The air was full of the sound of tiny babies crying. I had just given birth to two little pups.
My body felt so tired, like I was going to die.
Ayomide suddenly grabbed the two babies right out of the small bed. They were still wet and small. She looked at me with giant, angry eyes.
“Give them back to me!” I screamed. I tried to sit up, but my body fell back down. I was too weak.
“Give them back to you?” Ayomide laughed. “You are just a poor wolf. You cannot even buy them milk.”
“I am your twin sister!” I cried out. “We share the same blood! Why are you doing this to me, Ayomide?”
“Your mother loved you and left me alone in that big house with all those mean wolves!” Ayomide yelled. “I suffered for years while you were safe! I hate you!”
She came closer to me. Her teeth looked sharp.
“The pack only needs one beautiful face,” Ayomide said. “And that face is going to be mine!”
“What are you going to do with those babies?” I gasped.
“I am going to burn you until you are gone!” Ayomide said.
She grabbed a bottle of gasoline and threw it all over the floor. She lit a small fire and dropped it on the wood. Then she turned around and ran out of the room with my two tiny babies.
The fire grew huge in three seconds. It was so hot.
Ayomide walked out into the cold night and looked back at the big flames. She looked down at the two small newborns in her arms.
Ten months ago, she had gone back to the room to hide her bad tracks. She had met a guard who worked for Supreme Alpha Idris Blackthorne. That was when she found out the truth.
The wolf who had claimed me that night was not a bad rogue. It was Idris Blackthorne, the king of the Blackthorne Bloodmoon Pack.
Ayomide had made a big plan right then. She was going to use our identical faces to trick the Supreme Alpha. She would tell him she was the girl from that night.
With me dead in the fire, no one would ever know the secret.
“Do not cry,” Ayomide told the babies. “If you were not Idris’s kids, I would leave you in the dirt. But you will help me become the new pack queen.”
But Ayomide did not know something. I was not dead.
Before the fire could touch my skin, I used all my power to jump out of the low window. I fell into the wet grass and crawled away into the dark trees.
Suddenly, a huge pain hit my stomach again. I gasped as a soft cry came from the grass beneath me.
Oh my goddess. There were more.
I reached out with my shaking hands. I pulled two more tiny, wet babies close to my chest. I had given birth to four pups, not two.
“I will stay alive for you,” I whispered to them. My eyes grew hot with deep anger. “I will grow strong, and I will take back everything she stole from us.”
Zanele Okafor"Look at this giant young male wolf standing by the den entrance," a loud female voice squeaks right as my boots hit the front grass of Zanele's Mooncrest Villa."His handsome face is so great, his muscles must be waiting for his chosen mate to return from the forest," another old high-blood female whispers back with a big smile."My heart wonders which lucky young girl in our pack dominion network gets to curl up against his heavy fur tonight?"My silver pupils blink behind my freckled mask, feeling deeply dubious about how handsome this stray wolf could truly be. No matter what bloodline he comes from, my mind is completely sure his face cannot look better than those two grand alpha brothers who run the Blackthorne Bloodmoon Pack. My steps glide nonchalantly past the group of older females, but the exact second my eyes trace the male standing under the archway, my pupils widen in pure, total shock.Idris Blackthorne? Why are his giant alpha boots occupying the dirt out
Zanele Okafor"What are your claws doing to this girl, Aunt Mandy?" Riven Thornclaw growls, his broad chest blocking the light as his long fingers quickly lift my frame up to stand perfectly straight on the smooth stone floor. Before the angry female can let out a single snarl from her throat, Chris Watsons steps forward, his paws snatching his wife's shoulders to pull her back with an absolute unconcerned, careless expression. "Riven, did your ears not catch the words coming out of her mouth? Her hand merely slipped on the clay horn.""Your name—""She already let out a soft apology to the room, boy. What more does your alpha pride want to take from her skin?" Chris continues his loud barking, his teeth bared in deep irritation. "No matter how many winters pass, my wolf remains the biological son of Old Max and a high-blood member of this pack dominion network. Your rank cannot just take the side of this ugly, spotted outsider over your own bloodlines!"In true reality, Chris and Man
"Zanele Okafor." I let out a polite, soft smile behind my freckled mask."Zanele. That name carries a beautiful ring across the forest." Max nods his head slightly, a small tear of genuine pack gratitude welling up at the corner of his old eyes. "Your paws pulled my life back from the abyss. The Watsons clan and my own legacy will remember your kindness until our bones turn to dust."Thinking about the absolute circus of crazy relatives who were just screaming for my head, my silver gaze shifts onto Riven’s profile before looking back down at the old leader. My hand waves through the air in a dismissive gesture. "It is my absolute pleasure to help your failing core, Old Mr. Watsons. As for the other wolves who share your blood... I highly doubt their hearts feel the exact same gratitude."Riven’s silver pupils flicker slightly behind his gold-rimmed glasses, and a sudden, rosy red tint floods straight into his tanned cheeks."My tongue is deeply sorry that my wolf completely misunders
Zanele Okafor"My ears hold absolute zero desire to waste my wolf breath tossing explanations to your blind pack circle," I murmur, my facial muscles staying completely cold and expressionless as my eyes track the angry elders. The Okafor Moonfang Clan and the Watsons wolves know absolutely nothing about the sacred arts of silver acupuncture. Therefore, it is merely a total, useless waste of my energy to explain the flow of life-pulse to their greedy minds. After casting a sharp, sweeping glance across the hostile crowd, my boots strut directly toward the furs where Max is laying, and my fingers start pulling the thin metal spikes out of his skin. These ancient crystal needles are my ultimate family heirloom, handed down to my paws by my maternal grandfather line. They are incredibly precious, priceless treasures across the Ravenmoor Moon City, as every single spike is forged from a rare, mysterious moon-metal hidden deep in the mountain caves."Guardians, please lock the iron chains
A massive wave of pure relief washes through my blood after the final silver spike sinks home.My palms then drop down to press against Max’s wrist furs, tracking the immediate, subtle changes inside his pulse.Just then, a heavy series of frantic boot-steps comes echoing from the outer stone corridor. Before our frames can move, the master bedroom door is slammed open, and a whole group of well-dressed, angry pack elders forces their way into the space.Holding a thick mountain weed cigar between his teeth, a male wolf with slicked-back gray hair glares straight at my mask with freezing eyes. "What low female is this? Why are her boots standing inside the leader's den?" he questions loudly. My body stands up straight, my eyebrows knitting together into a deep frown as my eyes face the intruders. In response to my defensive stance, the middle-aged pack elder strokes his chin, letting out a deeply sinister, mocking smile from his fangs. While my mind is quickly calculating a safe path
Zanele Okafor"What a chaotic, muddy trail his wolf spirit is swimming in," I murmur to my own chest, my fingers staying tightly pressed against Max Watsons’ bony wrist furs. His life-pulse is skipping and jumping with a completely irregular, jerky pattern, indicating that a vile rogue substance has been dropped straight into his water bowl.Currently, there is far more than a single type of dark moon toxin circulating through his old veins. The heavy, conflicting poisons gathered inside the old pack leader’s body are aggressively invading his internal organs, causing his inner wolf to slip deep into a total, unresponsive coma. The more my healing brain dwells on the depth of the fluid damage, the more a massive, cold wave of true fear rips through my chest. The presence of four totally different poisons means that more than one pack member has been dropping venom into Old Mr. Watsons’ meat plates. How could a bloodline act so savagely against the supreme head of their own territory?
Idris Blackthorne"Remove those tracking skins right this second, Ayomide," I command, my silver eyes narrowing into sharp slits as I look at her shaking legs. "My hand paid every single token for that leather, and my wolf is waiting to see your bare feet hit the mud."The crowd of market wolves st
Zanele Okafor"Is your brain completely broken or are your eyes just full of swamp water?" I yell, my tail whipping hard against my leather skirt as I stare at the female wolf's snarling face. The girl standing in the middle of the Nightshade Market is Riven Thornclaw’s mate, Ayomide Okafor. There
Zanele Okafor"Slide your paws inside the carriage seat," Idris barks out, his silver eyes flashing with a cold, heavy power as his massive frame looms over the carriage door.I lift my chin, keeping a fake smile on my mouth as my eyelashes bat at his dark face. "My wolf does not think that is a sm
Idris Blackthorne"Your alpha brain is completely out of its mind!" I yell, my shoulder twisting hard against his heavy leather grip as my boots slip on the stone floor. My nose slams right into his thick chest muscles during the pull, and a sharp, hot pain shoots through my face like I just hit a
