DEENA

For one stupid second, everyone froze.

Not the screaming downstairs. Not the howling somewhere outside the mansion. Not the wounded man bleeding all over the foyer floor.

Us.

Me, Nicole, and Mace stood in the guest wing hallway, staring at each other while the words rose from below like smoke.

They’re coming for the human wife next.

Then my body remembered what it knew how to do.

I moved.

Mace blocked me before I reached the stairs.

Of course he did.

“Deena, stay here.”

I looked up at si

XAVIER I had not meant to tell her at dinner. Not with twenty wolves listening. Not with Silas watching from his seat like a blade hidden under silk. Not with Deena sitting halfway down my table, exhausted, steady, and still carrying the scent of Gavin’s blood beneath clean soap. But secrets were beginning to rot inside my house. And Deena Williams was done being lied to.The silence after my words was absolute.Across the long table, her fork rested beside her plate where it had slipped from her fingers. Nicole had gone still beside her, all sharp edges and narrowed eyes. Mace stood at her back, his posture controlled, but I knew him well enough to see the tension in his shoulders.Deena looked at me.Not at the others. Not at the food. Me.“The crash,” she said slowly, “was an assassination attempt.”“Yes.”Her face did not crumble. It did not soften. Her smooth brown skin held the same warmth beneath the chandelier light, but her expression closed down with a precision that made s

“Don’t eat with the wolves.”The words landed in the medical room like a blade dropped point-first.Gavin’s hand stayed locked around my wrist, his fingers hot and trembling, the bond marks burning beneath his grip like someone had pressed a match to my skin. His eyes were fever-bright. Wild. Terrified.Xavier moved so fast the air snapped.I lifted my free hand. “Don’t.”He stopped.Barely.His blue eyes had gone sharp with something darker moving beneath them. His wolf was close. I could feel it in the pressure crowding the room, in the way every werewolf inside it went still.“Let her go,” Xavier said.Gavin’s fingers twitched, but he didn’t release me. “They said… tell her…”“You did,” I said gently, because whatever message he’d carried had cost him blood and almost his life. “I heard you.”His gaze clung to mine for one more second. Then his strength gave out.Lena stepped in, quick and calm, easing his fingers off my wrist. “He’s crashing from pain and fever. I need everyone wh

He shifted with me. “Mace, I swear to God, if you make me argue medicine while someone dies, I will become deeply unpleasant.”Nicole appeared at my shoulder. “For context, this is her pleasant.”His jaw clenched. “You do not understand the situation.”“I understand blood loss. I understand silver apparently means bad shit in

NICOLE For the record, sleeping with one eye open and one bra on was not a plan designed for comfort. It was a plan designed by a woman who had been dragged into werewolf politics, assigned a luxury bedroom, and expected to pretend expensive sheets made up for the possibility of being murdered by somebody with family jewelry and poor boundaries. My room was ridiculous.Huge bed. Cream curtains. Fireplace. A window overlooking black trees and rain-silvered lawn. It looked like the kind of place a heroine in a gothic novel would stay right before discovering her husband kept his first wife in the attic.Except my husband was a rental situation in no universe, and Deena was the one accidentally married to the Alpha King.I had just shoved my toothbrush into the bathroom cup when my phone buzzed.Dee: Come here. Now.My stomach dropped so hard it felt like somebody cut the elevator cable.I was out the door in five seconds.Deena stood just inside her room, damp from the shower, dressed

DEENA No one answered me.That was an answer all by itself. The foyer held its breath around us. Rain ticked against the tall windows. Somewhere deeper in the mansion, someone had been laughing a minute ago. That sound was gone now, swallowed by the kind of silence that made every shift of fabric and every inhale feel suspicious.Xavier stood beside me, looking at the grainy photo on Mace’s phone like he could murder pixels. The silver signet ring on the intruder’s hand glowed under lobby light. The Evers crest. His crest. My stomach tightened.“So,” I said, because apparently my survival instinct had clocked out for the day, “we’re all just going to stand here and pretend that doesn’t look bad?”Mace lowered the phone, his jaw hard. “It looks like betrayal.”Nicole stepped closer to me, one hand brushing my elbow. Not grabbing. Just there. “Inside betrayal.”Silas’s mouth flattened. “Or a stolen ring. Or a forgery. We should not leap toward accusations because a frightened human wan

XAVIER The words did not change no matter how long I stared at them. She signed. Now she bleeds.Five words. Black ink. Clean handwriting. No tremor, no hurry.Whoever had written them had taken their time.My wolf wanted to tear through the building wall by wall until it found a throat. I kept my hand flat on the kitchen table instead, fingers spread beside the photograph, because if I curled them, something would break.Again.Deena stood close enough for me to feel the heat of her body at my side. She was quiet, but the bond betrayed what her face refused to show me.Fear.Anger.Humiliation.And beneath all of it, a steady beat of defiance that made my wolf lift its head.“Let me see it,” she said.“No.”Her eyes cut to mine.I heard the mistake the second it left my mouth.Nicole made a sharp little sound behind her. “You are learning nothing at an Olympic level.”I turned the photograph over and handed it to Deena. Her fingers brushed mine. The bond sparked hot.She read the me
