Fortunately for the few people who cared about me, I wasn’t hit by a car. I managed to make it home in one piece physically, but my heart and soul were shattered. I stumbled into my living room and burst into tears. As I cried I kept replaying my life, wondering how the girl I’d known since grade school and the guy I’d given my virginity to, could have betrayed me like this. Had the signs always been there that Chole was a jealous bitch, and Joe was a cheating asshole? I began thinking back to the first day I introduced them to each other, and all the times after that. Yep, the red flags were there, but I was too trusting to see them. That blind trust had made me give Joe all my savings. Although it had been Chloe’s idea. She knew I was saving for my grandma treatment and six months ago she’d asked me how much I’d gotten. “Twenty thousand so far,” I’d told her. “Wow, nice job. I wish there was a way to make it more.” “Yeah. Me too.” I sighed. “Hey, your new boyfriend is a hedge fund manager right? Why not give it to him to invest for you? With the right investment, you could double, or triple it by in six months.” She suggested. I hesitated. “Sounds good, but I’m not sure. What if I lose the investment?” “Tell him how important the money is to you. I’m sure if he knows it’s a matter of life and death he’ll be careful when investing for you.” I thanked her for the good idea and hugged her. That afternoon I told Joe about it. “I’m sorry your grandmother has such a serious health issue,” he said sympathetically. “Don’t worry babe, I’ll make sure your investment will yield enough to cover all the medical expenses. To make it even better, I suggest you add money every week to the investment, that way you will gain massively.” Stupid me had believed him, so every week I gave him the five hundred dollars I’d saved from my tips. Believing I was growing my investment. Thinking about how I had starved, deprived myself of some necessities to save that money not knowing the bastard was using it to take care of his girlfriend made me cry harder. The designer bags, shoes, little jewelry, and small trips out of state, that Chloe was always telling me was paid for by her fiancé, and I would stupidly be happy for her, it was all done using my hard earned money. The thought hurt me like a knife to my chest. I must have cried for hours before I heard a soft knock on my door. “Ivy, what’s going on in there? Please open up.” It was Tess, my neighbor and good friend. We were close, even though she was much older. I often stopped by her apartment when I came home from work to eat snacks and watch movies. “Nothing Tess. I’m fine.” I croaked. “No you are not. Now open up or I will call the cops.” I knew she would. Sighing, I staggered to the door and opened it. “My goodness you look awful! What happened? Did something happen to your grandmother.” She asked anxiously. I shook my head and led her inside. We sat on my worn sofa. “I dozed off waiting for you to show up and watch Barbarian with me,” she said. “when I woke up I heard you sobbing. What is the matter?” Tearfully I told her what had happened that evening. “I’m so sorry dear,” she said gently. “The thing about treachery is, it's done by the people closest to you, that’s why it’s so painful.” I heard the hurt in her voice and remembered she’d told me how her ex husband had betrayed her with her cousin. “Stop crying dear.” Tess continued, “the disloyal bitch and bastard deserve each other. Such a relationship is built on quicksand and they’ll both sink in it. Trust me, you will have the last laugh.” “That’s not the only thing upsetting me,” I said sadly, reluctantly I told her about the money. “You gave the asshole your grandmother treatment money?” She asked horrified. “I wanted him to invest it. Now he won’t give it back. I’ll go to the cops first thing in the morning. I must get that money.” “Calm down sweetheart.” She said gently. “You said it was an investment? Did you sign any paperwork? Is there any evidence.” “No.” “No records at all.” I shook my head, feeling dumb. She sighed. “That money is gone Ivy. You have to forget about it.” “No. I can’t . My grandma needs the money.” “You can't get it. Without evidence cops can’t do anything. The bastard Joe can sue you for harassment if you bother him. You made a mistake giving him the money without signing anything.” I felt crushed. “What should I do?” I whispered. “We’ll think of something. Right now I want you to forget those traitors and get some sleep. Can you do that?” I nodded. She hugged me and left. I lay on the sofa, too depressed to change and get into bed. All my anger shifted from Joe and Chloe to myself. How could I have been so stupid? After hours of thinking, I decided it wasn’t totally hopeless. A doner hadn’t been found yet, so the money wasn’t needed immediately. I had time. With more hard work I could save enough before it was. I never knew the fates were laughing at me. The next morning my phone woke me up. “Miss Carter? This is Dr. Silver. We have a compatible donor.” My eyes filled with tears. “Really?” “Yes.” For the first time in twelve hours, I smiled, grandma was going to live. Then Dr. Silver spoke again. “We’ll need the deposit immediately.” My smile disappeared and the blood drained from my face.Ivy's Pov My phone woke me up the next morning. “Hello?” I answered sleepily. “Ivy, it’s me Tess.” I sat up. “Is something wrong with Grandma?” I asked anxiously, wondering why she had called and so early. “No, she is fine, but your wedding pictures are all over social media. People are talking about nothing else.” “What? That’s impossible. No reporters were allowed at the wedding, how did they get the pictures?” “Someone must have let them in, maybe they paid a servant. Trust me if the paparazzi want something, they get it. Don’t worry, you looked lovely, no one would tell you weren’t Ivy Sullivan. How was your wedding night? Anything interesting?” She asked mischievously. “Nothing. And I’m glad. This isn’t real after all.” “If you say so. I’ve got to get ready for work. I’ll be seeing your grandmother later.” “Give her my love.” I said. I hung up and opened social media. Tess was right. Every blog had the picture of me in my wedding dress, and me kissing Paul,
Ivy’s Pov I recognized Ivy Sullivan’ voice, but it was loud and angry. “How dare you interfere in my arrangements?” She yelled. “I didn’t, I’m doing everything you asked.” I said confused. “You have no right to cancel the wedding I’d already planned!” “But I-“ “I’m paying you to follow my script, not make decisions!” “I’m sorry. I meant no harm. I’ll tell the wedding planner to continue the original arrangement –“ “And have me look unstable? Leave it alone! You have done enough damage. From now on stop thinking and do as you’re told! Or the deal is off.” I let the phone slip out of my hands. I didn’t know why she was so mad, but what bothered me more, was she already knew about the change almost immediately I made it, which meant she had a spy in the house too. I shuddered. I would have to be very careful. ****** Ivy Sullivan’ Pov I hung up and flung the phone away angrily. “Idiot!” I hissed. “One simple job and she can’t do it.” Now the moment I’d been wai
Ivy's Pov When I signed up to be Ivy Sullivan I didn’t remember I would have to memorize her personal habits as well. “Sorry, I’m just a little distracted with the planning of the wedding.” I smiled. “Don’t worry about it. How about we go play tennis later? it'll help you relax.” Before I could make an excuse to refuse, Jenna came in. “When you are done Ms. Sullivan, let’s go over the wedding arrangements once more.” She said. “Sure.” I said eagerly. We went to the living room and she told me what been arranged. I listened open mouthed to the huge sums budgeted for flowers, cake, food and champagne. “Why so much?” I asked. “You wanted it that way ma’am, especially since a lot of your family and friends will be there.” “Family? Ivy’s family is coming? I thought she’s an only child?” I asked. She looked at me in confusion. “You have aunt’s , uncle’s and cousin’s ma’am. They are all coming, so are your friends and business associates “ I felt my heart racing. Bein
Ivy's Pov I managed to stay an hour before escaping to my room. Victor was nice and friendly, but the conversation felt like an exam. One wrong answer and he'd know I wasn't Ivy Sullivan. Tess was right, I thought, this wasn’t going to be easy. Thinking of Tess I remembered I hadn’t called her like I’d promised. She would be worried sick. Clive had told me not to contact anyone from my past, but no way was I including Tess. I dialed her number. “Hello? Tess it’s me.” “Ivy Sinclair! I swear if I’d died of a heart attack I would have haunted you forever!” “Sorry. I didn’t mean to worry you, I haven’t had time to call.” “You landed in Dallas hours ago.” “You saw that?” “The whole internet saw it. Every entertainment blog is talking about your arrival. You and Ivy Sullivan really look alike. I couldn’t tell the difference.” “Neither can anyone here.” “How is it? Hope you aren't in any trouble?” “No, it’s fine.” I sighed. “No it’s not. I can hear it in yo
As Ivy approached the kitchen she could hear the servants talking. “…..she seems nicer than usual, even saying thank you.” One said. “It’s all an act. Once she is Ms Sinclair and has full control of the estate she’ll go back to her nasty self.” Another said, “I wish Mr. Paul would agree to the surgery.” “Me too. I’m sure he’d be less depressed if he was walking.” Another added. They fell silent as she entered the kitchen. “I’m looking for James.” Ivy said. “He is in the dining-room.” A maid told her. “Where is that?” She asked. They looked at her in surprise, she nearly facepalmed. Of course I’m expected to know where it is. She thought. Someone pointed it out to her. James frowned as she came in. “Are you ready to leave?” He asked disappointed. “No. I came to apologize.” Ivy said softly. “I didn’t mean to upset Paul. I came to wait things right." She tried not to wince. James looked at her carefully, then nodded. “I’m happy you are saying that Ivy, he loves
Ivy's Pov "Why the surprise? Were you hoping I’d magical gotten better?” He asked with a bitter laugh, “No, this is how I’m going to be so you better get used to it or go back to Houston.”I stared at him, not sure what to say. I hadn’t expected my fake fiance would be deformed and wheelchair bound. There was a gentle knock and a maid came in with a tray.“Lunch Mr. Sinclair.” She said softly.“GET OUT!” Paul roared, “I’m not hungry!”The anger in his voice startled me.“Sir, James said –““I said leave! Fuck off!”He picked up a low stool beside him and flung it at her. It missed her by inches. She dropped the tray with a small scream. I stared opened mouthed. What the hell have I gotten myself into? I thought.James rushed in.“What’s going on?” He asked.I turned and ran from the room. I reached my room and sank on the bed panting. No wonder Ivy Sullivan hasn’t wanted to marry him. He wasn’t only deformed but violent too. No way was I going to go through with this. I didn’t care
