Chapter 2: Alexandra's POV

“That’s Alpha Marcus, heir of the Ashclaw Pack!”

“Did he just call that omega servant his mate?”

The room erupted into loud murmurs, which only subsided when the man, Marcus, tore his gaze from me to the guests.

The Ashclaw Pack. They were known for their large territory and merciless mentality. And the heir to their throne had just claimed me as his mate. My stomach churned, dread filling me.

“What is the meaning of this?” Father’s familiar voice pierced through the noise, addressing me with a tone dripping with accusation. “What have you done now?”

“Father.” I pushed myself off the ground, dusting my dirtied dress. Before any other words could slip from my lips, his hand came crashing down on my cheek.

My head flew to the side, my eyes widening. The pain exploded from my cheek, sharp enough to make my vision blur with tears.

“Don’t you dare call me that.” He raised his hand to strike again, and my eyes squeezed shut, anticipating the pain. But it never came.

Alpha Marcus had stepped in front of us, gripping my father’s arm midair. “Do you value your life? How dare you strike my mate?”

The guests continued to back away just as two people pushed through. My mother and Nathan. Our eyes locked for a second, and he took a step forward, only to be stopped by my mother, who pulled him back while shaking her head.

Another man stepped forward, similar in looks to Alpha Marcus, except he had hollow, emotionless dark eyes, a sharp contrast to Marcus’s green ones. His expression was rigid with a false calm. My father noticed as well and turned to him.

“Alpha Damarus, I apologize for this unfortunate turn of events. The girl will be thoroughly dealt with and will not bother your son.” He gestured toward the two guards standing at the bronze doors Nathan had walked through, standing still enough to have gone unnoticed until now. “Get her out of here.”

The guards stepped forward, their heavy metal armor clinking against the polished golden tiles. I whimpered, instinctively shifting behind the alpha who stood in front of me. My father’s definition of dealing with me included a dark room and a locked door. A shiver ran down my spine just thinking about it.

“Marcus, get away from her. She is nothing but a bastard. She cannot be your mate,” Alpha Damarus commanded, gesturing for Marcus to come to him.

The blonde alpha groaned as a group of people helped him get to his feet. His whole face was bashed up from the force Alpha Marcus had used to slam him into the wall. Upon seeing this, the two guards slowed down, taking small, cautious steps.

“The Moon Goddess has chosen, and I will honor her will. I do not care for her position or the origin of her birth. She is my mate.” Marcus spoke with the tone of someone whose mind was made up and could not be changed.

“You are an heir to a great pack. You need a suitable luna at your side. You have a great responsibility to your people. Do not let personal emotions cloud your judgment.” Alpha Damarus tried to reason again, his voice pointed, implying something I could not quite pick out.

I wanted to agree, to avoid causing more problems that would only add to the misery of my life. But the pull Alpha Marcus had on me kept me in place, my lips firmly shut.

One of the guards lunged for me then, probably thinking Marcus was distracted.

For a second, time seemed to slow. The breeze froze, and the sunlight peeking through the floor-to-ceiling windows dimmed. Marcus moved with unnatural speed, blocking the man’s view of me. His palm came into contact with the guard’s skull, sending him backward toward the door. His body slammed against the heavy bronze door, his head turned almost all the way around.

The crunching of bone echoed through the room, and the heavy power that had been present before vanished, the breeze resuming and the sunlight returning. Then the screams followed.

The guests pushed over each other, desperate to escape the man who claimed to be my mate. Me? My eyes remained glued to the dead man, who had been condemned for the crime of trying to harm me. The fear contrasted with the warmth I felt from being protected for once.

“How dare you! I invited you into my territory, and this is how you repay my hospitality?” my father roared, glaring at Alpha Marcus.

“It is not wise to speak to someone of my blood so blatantly, Alpha Mattias. My son will be taken care of, as you will do your daughter,” Alpha Damarus interrupted, cold and sharp, then turned to Marcus. “Son, this girl cannot be your mate. I refuse to accept it.”

“It is not for you, or anyone else, to decide. She is my bondmate, and she will come home with me.” Marcus lifted his voice, addressing the whole room, though his gaze remained fixed on his father. “I will walk out of this hall now with my mate next to me. If anyone tries to stop me, I will not hesitate to burn this whole pack house down and everyone in it.”

Father stepped forward, ready to argue, only to be interrupted by Nathan. “I think you have done enough, Father.”

Our gazes met, and he gave me a pitiful look, a silent apology like I was not the one who ruined his big day.

There was nothing I could say that would fix what I had broken. The Moonridge Pack was humiliated, and so was he. Even if he managed to find his mate tonight, there could be complications because of me.

Marcus wrapped his hand around mine, pulling me toward the door. I did not look back until we had stepped into the harsh sunlight. It was hard to believe that the grand hall had darkened mere minutes ago.

Before we could exit, Alpha Damarus spoke, saying something that finally made Marcus stop in his tracks.

“If you care for her as you claim, then you will not let her bear your curse with you.”

Dinner came to a tense-filled end, and the murmurs as we left the dining made that very clear. "How do you plan to deal with it?" I asked, keeping my distance from Marcus as we made our way back to our chambers. It wasn't much of my business, after all I was nothing but an omega from a distant pack. It wasn't my place to question how he handled pack affairs. "You can ask me anything. You are the future luna," he said, reaching out to grip my hand. My body pulled back on instinct, the fear of having a repeat of the pain and collar from the golden collar around his neck urging me to keep my distance. "It won't happen again. I dealt with it." My eyes widened as it finally dawned on me what he'd been saying. "You're reading my mind? How?" He shrugged, tightening his grip on my hand. "It's not exactly reading. I can feel what you feel. Ever since we tied the knot. Can't you?" My eyebrows drew into a frown. "No, I haven't felt it. Is something wrong?" "It must be because we haven't

The dining hall had a long wooden table in the center, with multiple chairs on either end.At the end of the table were two chairs, for the Alpha and Luna. Alpha Damarus sat on one, the other remained empty.Marcus had never mentioned his mother, and looking back, there were never any traces of her anywhere. On either side of the table were both Lucien and Marcus. The seat next to Lucien was occupied by a beautiful, sharp-eyed woman. His mate.Bile rose to my throat at the thought of him sleeping with so many omegas even with his mate well and present. Was Marcus going to be the same? The seating seemed to be based on status and power. "Well, why are you standing? Sit down and don't delay us further." The woman, Lucien's mate demanded, gesturing to the empty chair next to Marcus.Marcus glared at her before his gaze focused back on me, softening as I approached. Before sitting, I bowed to Alpha Damarus as was the custom back home. "Thank you for having me, Alpha."Lucien snorted, mu

My gaze shifted from the view of the pack to him. Around his neck, something glowed like a ring of fire.A chain."Marcus...""Ignore it." He grunted. Each word seemed to only make the chain of fire burn brighter. "It won't let me tell you. You have to see. You will see. It's not like I can control it anymore, I haven't been able to since you arrived.""Your wolf, when it took over, was that...?" My eyes widened. His lips parted to reply but the collar of fire burned even brighter, forcing his mouth shut."Don't say anything. I don't need to know what it is." Even if this curse could be the reason my life fell apart before it even began. The collar didn't stop burning, and his face began to twist, the pain so unbearable he couldn't hide it.Then I took my hands off him for barely a second and the light dimmed.I did it again, staying away for longer this time, and the light almost went out. "It's me... I'm the one causing it."My knees felt weak as I pushed myself to my feet, taking s

Her strawberry, citrus scent was impossible to miss. Even after my father shoved the door open, scanning the empty hallway, I still had no doubt that she'd been here. Not that she was at fault. Tonight should have been one of the best of her life, only to end up ruined because of her monster of a mate."I swear I heard someone make a sound." Lucien grunted, eyes darting across the hallway like the culprit would miraculously appear.Unable to keep it in, a small chuckle fell from my lips. My mate really was a quick one. Smart too. Both of them turned, glaring at me for my reaction."Is something funny, Marcus?" Lucien asked, eyes narrowed."Not particularly. I didn't hear anything though, perhaps you aren't feeling well. Have you considered seeing a healer?"This was my chance to finally escape this conversation. It was one we'd had time and again in the past, and it always ended the same way. With my father too afraid of me to confront my actions, but too proud to back down either."I

Something went wrong the moment his arms wrapped around me.His skin burned against mine. Not in a calm, savoury way that matched the feel of the bond.It burned. My hands pressed against his broad, hard chest, attempting to push him off. "Marcus..."He gave no response as his fingers ran through my hair before shoving the strands off my neck.Even before his teeth grazed my bared neck, it was clear what was to follow, yet something in me fought it off.The man on top of me now couldn't be the same mate that had brought me to this room. "Marcus, you're hurting me."That seemed to awaken something inside him. He pulled away, blinking rapidly like someone who just woke from a dream. "Alexandra?""It's me. Just me." Despite my efforts to sound calm, there was still an edge of caution laced into each word.He nodded, hesitating before pushing himself off the bed. "I should leave you to get settled then. You can bring your clothes in, I already made space in the closet.""But we haven't...

"You feel it too?"Alexandra's head snapped up to face me, nearly losing her balance if not for the white cloth still holding us together. "The bond. You can feel it?"She nodded slowly, dropping her gaze back to the knot tied over our hands."We can take it off once we get to my chambers. Once we consummate, it should be easier to tame. The bond, I mean." My throat felt dry and the wound on my palm stung where the skin had split. But that was almost completely irrelevant. She had stayed. After what she'd seen last night, it wouldn't have surprised me if I'd stood at that altar for the rest of the night and walked away by dawn without a mate. That was enough for a reason for me to pledge myself to her. "Consummate?" She whispered, eyes widening. It dawned on me then that since she was so clueless about everything about a mating ceremony, she wouldn't know what it meant to consummate one either."It's the final step to seal the bond. It's supposed to feel good and I promise to be gen

"Wait...did you see...?" I turned around, swirling the dress along with me. Haelenya glanced around the room before settling her gaze back on me. "See who?" "Irina. My...maid." The last word still felt odd on my tongue. It was one thing to let her serve me, but entirely different to acknowledge t

Everything happened in a blur. The guards surrounded Alpha Damarus, prepared to protect their Alpha, then they all dropped to the floor, shaking violently."Marcus, control yourself. The Ashclaw packhouse was exactly as the stories described.Large. So large one could get lost in the halls for days. The carriage had carried us past the outer gate where the town was, and stopped at the ancestral packhouse.“Welcome back, Alpha Damarus.” A woman stepped out of the large palace-li
