Chapter 3: Marcus's POV

last update publish date: 2026-04-27 01:55:49

My mate offered almost no struggle, following me out quietly. My father’s words occupied my mind like weeds, too stubborn to die down, but the bond chased off the echo quickly.

We walked toward the edge of the grounds where the convoy of my pack was. In the harsh sunlight, the bruises that painted her trembling skin were even more evident, spiking an anger that felt foreign to me.

I was almost tempted to return to the pack house to break the hand Alpha Mattias had used to strike her delicate face, but that would mean leaving her side. Her scent.

It was even stronger than it had been in the hall, and that had been enough to drive me away from my father’s side to the corner where that alpha had been harassing her.

Something had flared inside me then. A deep and possessive feeling that had cleared all logical reasoning. My wolf howled for me to save the omega girl dressed in rags instead of silk.

“What is your name?”

Her gaze snapped away from the ground to face me, distant like her mind had drifted. She hadn’t resisted my grip before, but in that moment she tried to pull away. Almost on instinct, my hand tightened around hers, thin and fragile.

“Don’t run from me. If you do, I will chase you. And if I chase you, I will catch you.” Her blue eyes flickered, glassy and terrified. “Your name.”

“Alexandra.” Her voice was so quiet, it nearly disappeared in the wind, already used to silence and submission.

“You have a beautiful name. I apologize if I caused you distress, but they were going to harm you otherwise.” Perhaps that was the cause of distrust in her eyes, or maybe it was my father’s warning.

The curse of the demon eye had skipped generations of our family, yet now I bore it, and she would bear it as well once claimed as my mate.

“Do you fear me?” My feet came to a halt in front of the high inner gate of the pack.

Her eyes widened as she shook her head, still avoiding my gaze, though I was desperate to meet hers. “I fear what I’ve heard about you, but I do not know you, Alpha, so I do not fear you.”

My fingers found the base of her chin, tilting her head up until our eyes locked. “And what is it that you have heard about me?”

She hesitated, drawing in a breath while struggling to hold my gaze. “Sometimes, on the nights I spent in the servants’ quarters, the older maids told stories about your pack.”

“And what do they say, little mate?” She gasped when my hand yanked her closer, then wrapped around her waist to hold her against me.

“They told me a story about your pack once. They said you possessed a gift that made you flourish for generations, and also a curse borne by the alpha. Your father also mentioned a curse.”

“You will know the truth once we reach Ashclaw and I claim you as my mate.” My fingers shifted to cup her cheek. The bond demanded for me to take her right there, to make her mine, and it took sheer force of will to resist. “No one will ever harm you again, Alexandra. I swear it now under the sun, and I will do it again beneath the moon so the goddess will be my witness.”

Her blue eyes glistened, then she raised her arms, wrapping them around me and burying her head in the crook of my neck. “I’ll try my best as your mate, but I know nothing about being a luna. I am not fit for the role, Alpha.”

“Marcus.” My teeth ached from how hard they were clenched. Whatever she needed to know she would learn, and the first thing was that she addressed me as an equal, not a master. “You can call me Marcus.”

Footsteps approached, and I turned immediately, pulling away from Alexandra while shoving her behind me protectively.

My father approached, clearly displeased. Alexandra shrank behind me, gripping my arm tight.

“Marcus, we need to talk.”

“There is nothing more to discuss.” Our eyes locked, a silent threat floating between us. “I assume we are no longer welcome to this pack after the incident that just occurred. My mate will go to gather her belongings, and then we can be on our way.”

He pressed two fingers to his temple, staring at Alexandra, who was peeking from her hiding place behind me. If it wasn’t so heartbreaking, her skittish attitude was almost cute.

“You are right. I doubt we will have reason to set foot in the Moonridge Pack again.” His gaze shifted back to me. “That stunt you pulled inside is already starting to stir up people’s interest. The other packs will truly begin to suspect if the rumors are actually true. You couldn’t kill him without using the demon’s eye to mess with the weather?”

“I lost control of it for a second. The rumors about me will all die down soon enough. It always does.” I turned away from him to Alexandra, whose eyes were darting between us, clearly confused. “We’re going to get your things, then we ride home.”

“Does she even know what you’re about to push her into? The responsibility she’s obviously not trained for will weigh her down and crush her.” My father’s fingers curled into fists, though they did not threaten me.

Alexandra was coming back to Ashclaw, and there was nothing my father or anyone else could do to stop it.

She tugged at the sleeve of my black shirt gently, staring up at me with soft blue eyes that might have been able to get me to do anything. I didn’t understand what she wanted immediately, but then she pointed toward the direction of the pack house, her short nails digging into my arm.

Her voice sounded louder compared to the delicate whisper from before. The only thing similar between the two tones was that they were both laced with fear when she spoke.

“They’re coming.”

His lips trailed against my heating skin, leaving behind gentle hot kisses while exploring my body. Then his fingers lightly wrapped around my nipple, teasing slightly, driving me to the edge without giving any actual release. "Marcus." My voice was soft and seductive, nothing like it had been before. The sound shocked me, though my mind was quickly yanked back to reality as his fingers clenched around the soft bud, pinching and squeezing while forcing me to arch my back and shove my chest forward. "You like that, darling?" I felt his lips curve up into a smile as he continued, until his face was between my legs. My face flushed as it dawned on me that he had an undisturbed view of that place. Somewhere no other person, alpha or otherwise, had ever touched. And now he was about to put himself inside. A part of me was ready to draw back and avoid mating. Marcus had been good to me until now; surely his lust would not make him force me into something I didn't want. My he

Dinner came to a tense-filled end, and the murmurs as we left the dining made that very clear. "How do you plan to deal with it?" I asked, keeping my distance from Marcus as we made our way back to our chambers. It wasn't much of my business, after all I was nothing but an omega from a distant pack. It wasn't my place to question how he handled pack affairs. "You can ask me anything. You are the future luna," he said, reaching out to grip my hand. My body pulled back on instinct, the fear of having a repeat of the pain and collar from the golden collar around his neck urging me to keep my distance. "It won't happen again. I dealt with it." My eyes widened as it finally dawned on me what he'd been saying. "You're reading my mind? How?" He shrugged, tightening his grip on my hand. "It's not exactly reading. I can feel what you feel. Ever since we tied the knot. Can't you?" My eyebrows drew into a frown. "No, I haven't felt it. Is something wrong?" "It must be because we haven't

The dining hall had a long wooden table in the center, with multiple chairs on either end.At the end of the table were two chairs, for the Alpha and Luna. Alpha Damarus sat on one, the other remained empty.Marcus had never mentioned his mother, and looking back, there were never any traces of her anywhere. On either side of the table were both Lucien and Marcus. The seat next to Lucien was occupied by a beautiful, sharp-eyed woman. His mate.Bile rose to my throat at the thought of him sleeping with so many omegas even with his mate well and present. Was Marcus going to be the same? The seating seemed to be based on status and power. "Well, why are you standing? Sit down and don't delay us further." The woman, Lucien's mate demanded, gesturing to the empty chair next to Marcus.Marcus glared at her before his gaze focused back on me, softening as I approached. Before sitting, I bowed to Alpha Damarus as was the custom back home. "Thank you for having me, Alpha."Lucien snorted, mu

My gaze shifted from the view of the pack to him. Around his neck, something glowed like a ring of fire.A chain."Marcus...""Ignore it." He grunted. Each word seemed to only make the chain of fire burn brighter. "It won't let me tell you. You have to see. You will see. It's not like I can control it anymore, I haven't been able to since you arrived.""Your wolf, when it took over, was that...?" My eyes widened. His lips parted to reply but the collar of fire burned even brighter, forcing his mouth shut."Don't say anything. I don't need to know what it is." Even if this curse could be the reason my life fell apart before it even began. The collar didn't stop burning, and his face began to twist, the pain so unbearable he couldn't hide it.Then I took my hands off him for barely a second and the light dimmed.I did it again, staying away for longer this time, and the light almost went out. "It's me... I'm the one causing it."My knees felt weak as I pushed myself to my feet, taking s

Her strawberry, citrus scent was impossible to miss. Even after my father shoved the door open, scanning the empty hallway, I still had no doubt that she'd been here. Not that she was at fault. Tonight should have been one of the best of her life, only to end up ruined because of her monster of a mate."I swear I heard someone make a sound." Lucien grunted, eyes darting across the hallway like the culprit would miraculously appear.Unable to keep it in, a small chuckle fell from my lips. My mate really was a quick one. Smart too. Both of them turned, glaring at me for my reaction."Is something funny, Marcus?" Lucien asked, eyes narrowed."Not particularly. I didn't hear anything though, perhaps you aren't feeling well. Have you considered seeing a healer?"This was my chance to finally escape this conversation. It was one we'd had time and again in the past, and it always ended the same way. With my father too afraid of me to confront my actions, but too proud to back down either."I

Something went wrong the moment his arms wrapped around me.His skin burned against mine. Not in a calm, savoury way that matched the feel of the bond.It burned. My hands pressed against his broad, hard chest, attempting to push him off. "Marcus..."He gave no response as his fingers ran through my hair before shoving the strands off my neck.Even before his teeth grazed my bared neck, it was clear what was to follow, yet something in me fought it off.The man on top of me now couldn't be the same mate that had brought me to this room. "Marcus, you're hurting me."That seemed to awaken something inside him. He pulled away, blinking rapidly like someone who just woke from a dream. "Alexandra?""It's me. Just me." Despite my efforts to sound calm, there was still an edge of caution laced into each word.He nodded, hesitating before pushing himself off the bed. "I should leave you to get settled then. You can bring your clothes in, I already made space in the closet.""But we haven't...

"You feel it too?"Alexandra's head snapped up to face me, nearly losing her balance if not for the white cloth still holding us together. "The bond. You can feel it?"She nodded slowly, dropping her gaze back to the knot tied over our hands."We can take it off once we get to my chambers. Once we

"Wait...did you see...?" I turned around, swirling the dress along with me. Haelenya glanced around the room before settling her gaze back on me. "See who?" "Irina. My...maid." The last word still felt odd on my tongue. It was one thing to let her serve me, but entirely different to acknowledge t

Everything happened in a blur. The guards surrounded Alpha Damarus, prepared to protect their Alpha, then they all dropped to the floor, shaking violently."Marcus, control yourself. The Ashclaw packhouse was exactly as the stories described.Large. So large one could get lost in the halls for days. The carriage had carried us past the outer gate where the town was, and stopped at the ancestral packhouse.“Welcome back, Alpha Damarus.” A woman stepped out of the large palace-li
