“I’m full,” I said, and Evelyn gently rested her hand on my hair.

“I hope Caspian didn’t disrupt your appetite?” she asked, and I forced a smile. “Definitely not!” I replied.

Evelyn didn’t push further and let me go. As I walked off, the smile on my face darkened. I slammed the door shut and stared around the room. It was a gigantic room, and had a slightly eerie, unsettling feeling, Mia's vibe.

I sucked in a breath and gently took off my shoes. I glanced at the documents on the desk and walked towards it. I should get familiar with everything. Tomorrow, I would go and check out the company.

My hands settled on the first document, a clear rundown of the company’s finances. I flipped through the pages, scanning everything. It looked normal until I saw that. Something felt off.

“A huge transfer of about one billion… and to a shipping company?” I thought and sneered. I checked the name underneath and Dorian appeared.

My eyes darkened.

One billion for what EXACTLY? Since Mia went missing, had he been embezzling funds into his own company or perhaps a fake one? Also the people who actually wanted Mia were surely those who would gain everything, but Dorian… he didn’t seem like much of a suspect.

KNOCK KNOCK

I dropped the document as the knock came. I stared at the door. The serious look I had was replaced with a forced smile. I walked over and opened it softly.

Sloane? What was she doing here this night?

“Hi,” she said softly, but I didn’t reply. My lips stayed glued together as I just stared at her: her eyelids, her lips, everything, searching for any hint of something. I wanted to read her body language, but she gave nothing away.

“Can I come in?” she asked.

I snapped back to reality and my smile widened.

“Sure!” I said, and she stepped in.

Her eyes scanned the room and then landed on the document still open on the desk.

“So, eager to get back to the company,” she said softly.

I chuckled. “I have to. A lot seems to be going on at the company. Did you know?” I asked, folding my hands under my chest.

"For a second, I suspected you weren’t Mia, but right now I have little doubts. Mia would surely check the company on the first day. So this confirms you… for now,” she said.

“Don’t call me Mia like I’m someone else. I’m standing right in front of you.”

She paused for a second, while I just stared at her, not adding another word.

Sloane was also a billionaire, but she focused more on the entertainment industry. Unlike Mia, she was gentle, but she could also be cold when needed, especially when it came to Cassidy.

“You’re still mad about it, aren’t you?” I asked, changing the subject.

“About what?” she asked.

“That I neglected my own child for years,” I said, stacking the documents, but secretly watching her reaction.

Her lips trembled slightly, and her eyes turned cold. She chuckled lowly. “So you do know. You treated her badly, Mia.”

“That’s in the past,” I replied, and she gritted her teeth.

Of course I knew. Mia was ruthless, not only did she sabotage parties, she slept with multiple socialite men and even bragged about it. She ruined contracts and made wealthy families go bankrupt with a snap of her fingers. Who wouldn’t want her dead? Even I couldn’t stand that woman… and she did worse to her own child. It was a miracle the girl still loved her and still craved her attention. Really, anyone would want to kill Mia. That’s why I had to find her killer, and survive being her.

“I am aware of my past. I’m trying to do it right now,” I said.

Sloane gave me a look that clearly said 'what the hell..'

“I don’t care whatever show you are putting on for Cassidy, but if you dare hurt her or go back on your words, I will slash you in two. Don’t dare hurt her. She has been without a mum for too long,” she said, then walked to the door.

“Sloane!” I called softly.

She stopped but didn’t turn

“I love my child,” I said.

She scoffed. “Sure you do,” she muttered and opened the door.

“Have you found anything suspicious in the company lately?” I asked directly.

She froze. She didn’t turn. Didn’t speak. For what felt like forever. “Mia! A lot is going on in your company! And how would I know?” she snapped, then left.

A smile curved on my lips. That hesitation… that was my answer. She definitely knew something, but that was for tomorrow!

I collapsed onto the bed, letting the soft cushion hug my stiff body. It’s just been a day here, and I already feel like my life is about to end. Being Mia is stressful and hectic.

My eyes began to droop softly, but then a knock snapped me back to reality.

I stared at the ceiling for a second before blinking.

Was it Vincent? Why didn’t he just come in?

“It’s open,” I said, and the door creaked open,i froze in shock for a second.

Why was she here?

“Cassidy?” I blurted out, sitting up on the bed. “What happened?” I asked as she gently tucked her hair nervously.

“Can I sleep here?” she asked.

I stiffened. “Sure, you’re welcome, love,” I said, and her nervous expression turned into a smile. She rushed toward me and hugged me.

“Thank you, Mum,” she said, and I couldn’t help but smile...a genuine one. After all, a child is surely a blessing.

I pulled away from the hug and held her hands. She was eleven now. I had prepared a gift before coming.

I reached for the drawer and brought out a box. “Open it,” I said, stretching it toward her.

She stared eagerly at it but didn’t take it. Her gaze was fixed on my hand.

“Mom… didn’t you have a mole on your left hand? Where did it go?”

  • Mia’s Fortune    Chapter 57; VINCENT, WE HAVE A PROBLEM [1]

I immediately rushed out, not waiting. My legs moved before my brain could catch up, pushing through sweaty bodies on the dance floor. The bass pounded harder in my ears, mixing with my heartbeat. I bumped shoulders and spilled someone’s drink.Just then, the glass slipped from his grip and crashed onto the ground, making a loud shattering sound. I stopped in my tracks, turned back, and said, “I’m so sorry,” I mumbled, but then I sighted the silhouetted figures of Caspian and Christian. My eyes widened. I rushed off without looking back even though the man kept yelling.“Come get my drink refilled, bitch!”The exit felt like forever. Every flash of light made me think they were right behind me. I finally burst out the main door into the cool night air. My chest burned. I crouched down near some parked cars, panting heavily, trying to catch my breath. My lungs burned like fire. My heart slammed so hard I could hear it in my ears.I couldn’t stay still. They could catch me any second. S

The moment I pushed the door open, the sound hit me first... bass so heavy it felt like it was beating inside my chest instead of coming from the speakers.Light spilled over me in flashes. Red, blue, purple. Everything moving too fast, too bright, like the room couldn’t decide what it wanted to be. Warm air wrapped around me instantly, thick with perfume, alcohol, sweat, and something sweet I couldn’t quite place.I paused just for a second at the entrance.People were everywhere, laughing too loud. Dancing like nobody was watching, even though everyone was. Drinks raised high, bodies pressed close, the floor vibrating under constant movement.I moved forward anyway.A few strippers were dancing on the pole dressed in barely anything. I tore my gaze away as it messed with my head. I turned to my phone screen, the red dot was still beeping and I followed it, but suddenly it disappeared."Huh?" I asked, tapping violently on my screen. It didn’t pop up. I inhaled sharply and cursed unde

Hearing my name, I immediately climbed in and slammed the door shut. Reporters rushed forward, banging on the car, but the driver had already pulled away."Crazy reporters," I mumbled under my breath. My phone buzzed; it was Florida, who had boarded a separate car behind me."Miss, a broadcasting company is requesting your attention. They want you to attend a live show to talk about your disappearance." Hearing her words, my grip tightened.A broadcast? Live? I knew this was normal for celebrities and survivors, but why did it feel like a trap?"When was the email sent?" I asked."Yesterday," she replied. I bit my bottom lip. Should I accept? What could I even say? Do I talk about being tortured in an unknown place? I don't even know what the real Mia went through; I’d have to cook up a believable story."Miss, are you still there?" Florida prompted."Send the email to me. I will review it and give you feedback," I said firmly, then hung up."Where to, Miss?" the driver asked."The ho

  • Mia’s Fortune    Chapter 54: NOT SO SMART!

"I did what?" My gaze shut Florida up. She didn't dare speak again, and Silvia sat down on the chair. "You are such a good child," she complimented, but Xena only scoffed and sat down too. "I brought the gifts because Laura was a friend of mine," I said, and Xena's lips parted with discomfort and distrust. "Friends? You guys were enemies," she chirped in, and I sighed. "That's how we appeared on the surface, but in secret we were friends," I lied. Xena wasn't buying it, and Silvia just seemed skeptical about it. "I knew my sister pretty well. If you guys were friends, she would have said something!" she added. I wanted to argue, but Xena could be very stubborn, so I just let it slide. "Either way, I hope you can accept the gifts!" I added. Xena wanted to turn them away, but Silvia accepted them with a smile. "I will be going now, please do take care," I replied and moved to the door, but stopped in my tracks. "Also, Laura's death doesn't seem like an accident." I walked off

Third person's pov Cassian tossed his jacket onto the chair, but why did it feel weird and empty? Usually when he gets home, Celeste would be awake waiting for him or clutching her phone, waiting for his call, but right now it was pitch dark and no one was to be found."Celeste!" he yelled, yet no answer came. He chuckled and angrily took off his tie."How can she be asleep while I'm out?" he mumbled and moved towards the stairs, staggering as he was drunk."Celeste!" he yelled again once he arrived at her door, yet no response came. He felt a sudden panic in his chest and pushed the door open. There she was, sleeping peacefully on the bed, her hair covering her face, the duvet clinging to her body, and Cassian's breath hitched. He felt a sudden kind of pain that second, but it disappeared the next second and he moved towards her."Undress, get on your knees and please me," he screamed, making Celeste flutter her lashes open."Huh?" she asked softly, and he chuckled, laughing evilly.

  • Mia’s Fortune    Chapter 52: WHEN DID YOU BECOME THIS NICE?

"Reall-" I stopped on my track as I heard Xena's footsteps moving closer to the door, I immediately nodded and Mrs. Check held my hands, walking off with me...I analyzed her. Although she was dressed plainly, the gown she wore was worth billions... it made me wonder what a woman like her was actually doing in a low hospital like this.I sighted Xena's silhouette behind me, just staring. I dared not turn even though I wanted to and run into her arms."What brings you here?" I asked, breathing in heavily and she smiled."I came here for charity," she said and my eyes sparkled. She donated to this hospital! I have never seen a rich woman who would actually do this, unless...."My daughter died once, of a terminal illness. She was actually eighteen then and had just celebrated her birthday, when she collapsed that very second, and got hospitalized...." She stopped on her tracks and gently took my hands, as I gazed at her with full pity."Having all the money in the world is useless, when

I could feel myself being carried in his arms. “Don't fall asleep, listen to my voice,” his bold, warm voice came, and I groaned. My skin burned. I wanted to voice out, but nothing came out from my throat except a sharp pain.My lashes fluttered and slowly began to close....the next second, I could

LAURA'S POV"I didn't expect this place at all," I said, forcing a smile."Well, anything for you, my love," Christian said. Outside the ward, the air felt warmer and fresher. I inhaled deeply, and a smile escaped my lips. My mum didn't say a word, crying her eyes out, but Xena stepped forward. “Killed? I wouldn't do that to my sister, and neither would my mum do that to her. If we killed her, would she have even left two houses in our names? We would have gotten nothing!” she screamed back, and the crowd stopped. Sh
