I'M RUNNING AWAY.

"I’m running away."

Jane looked lost.

It was as though the world were being created all over again right before her eyes.

"Let me get you a chilled glass of orange juice so you can cool your head. Then you can explain exactly what you just said, Evans," she said sarcastically.

That was typical Jane; she never took life seriously. Everything was a joke to her.

She watched me closely, her expression one of awe, while I quietly gulped the juice.

Then, she spoke again. "Are you pregnant?"

"Jesus Christ, of course not, Jane! What is wrong with you?" I nearly choked on my drink.

"I mean, Evans, you abruptly show up at my house unannounced saying you want to run away... don’t you think that’s a bit creepy?"

"Fine! I know it is crazy, but I honestly need your help right now. Otherwise, I might lose my mind, Jane. I am just… I'm so tired."

She pulled me close to her chest and let me rest my head there for a while. I had already started sobbing.

"So, what’s the plan?" she asked, her voice finally turning serious.

I pulled out my phone and showed her the email from the record label.

"OH MY GOD, EVANS! The biggest record label in California called you for an audition. You’ve been chasing this since we worked at the bar!" She rattled the words off in a single breath, her eyes wide and her mouth agape.

Jane was a wild one. Unusual and fiercely independent.

She meticulously maintained her dyed red hair, and her numerous piercings were a statement all their own. She had large green eyes that, somehow, complemented her beauty perfectly.

"Jane, you had a life in California once. Is it something you’d ever go back to? New York is already a mess for both of us. We could build a new life there together."

Jane believed I should have let my father pay for his own mistakes instead of taking a bullet for him.

For the first time in years, I was beginning to think she was right. I had been miserable.

On the other hand, Jane had been struggling too; she'd lost her job at the bar because she couldn't keep up with her multiple menial roles once I wasn't there to cover for her.

She had even been molested by a boss at a club where she worked as a server. Currently, she had no stable job at all.

"I’ve only got my dad there; my mom already left him. But he’s still my dad," she mused.

"Do you think he can help us?"

"My dad definitely will." She smiled a nostalgic smile.

"I don't know how to thank you, Jane. You’re basically saving my life." I hugged her tightly.

"We’re saving our lives, Evans. We’re going to be fine." She held me and brushed my hair back with her palm.

"Oh my god, I need to head back before Tyler calls or I’m dead. I’ll text you our next move tonight." I stood up, grabbing my bag and car keys.

"Just be very careful, Evans. Be smart."

"I will."

She stood in the doorway and watched me get into my car.

She waved as I drove off. It was already 11:30 AM, and it was exactly a twenty-five-minute ride home, not even accounting for traffic. I swallowed hard.

The phone rang. I picked it up on the final ring before it went to voicemail.

"Hello, darling."

"Why are you panting?" he asked sternly.

He wasn't imagining it. I had run from the car to the living room just to answer the call, having pulled into the driveway only seconds before he dialed. I was lucky. Very lucky.

"No, I was just in the kitchen, so I ran to the phone when I heard it ringing."

"What did the doctor say?"

"He ran some tests. He said he’d send the results by tomorrow."

"I’ll be back pretty late. Don’t wait up."

That was it. The call ended.

My hands were shaking as if I’d just received a ransom call from a kidnapper. While still trembling, I dialed Jane’s number immediately.

"It’s tonight."

"Okay, Evans. I’ll wait at the train station. I hope this is what you want."

"Yes, Jane. Today is Friday, and Tyler doesn't get back until past midnight."

"Very well then."

We stayed on the line for a minute that felt like an eternity until the call finally dropped.

I walked upstairs, feeling both sluggish and hurried. Sluggish, because I was overwhelmed by everything happening at once; hurried, because I felt I had no time to waste.

My whole life flashed before my eyes as I stood in front of the mirror. I blamed my mom for leaving me so early.

I blamed my dad for how my life had turned out. I used to think love could solve everything, but it wasn't even enough.

I had ruined my life to please a parent who never gave a damn about me. The least I could do was give him a heads-up about my change of heart.

By 8:00 PM, my luggage was neatly settled by my feet. My hazel eyes were locked on the wall clock in the middle of the sitting room. My phone lay in my palm, ready.

"Dad? ... You have lived long enough, and I believe I’ve played the part of the good daughter long enough, too. Tonight, I’m escaping Tyler’s prison. He will come for you. Goodbye."

The only response I received was a deep sigh. The call went dead a second later.

My eyes welled with tears. These were tough decisions born of the fear of being caught.

My dad was likely going to die after all. And what if Tyler discovered my location afterward? Was Jane even safe with me?

Tyler's POV"Boss, I think we got a lead...""Talk, Williams."I lifted my stony face toward Williams. He was always fond of delivering information in the most cinematic way possible."One of the men... the digital researchers found a lead at one of the record labels in California. They searched all over New York and Phoenix, just as you instructed, but there was no facial resemblance to Evans. So, according to them, they went beyond their original assignment and started looking into other states. There was a match, but not under the name we know her by. She was registered as Claire Simon.""So you're saying this girl is my girl, but with a different name on the registry?""Uhm... Boss, not one hundred percent, but they're confident.""Williams, when I ask a goddamn question that deserves a yes or no, you give me a goddamn yes or no!"My voice echoed across the living room.I caught Williams flinch for a brief second, but he quickly steadied himself."Y-Yes, Boss. Yes, she's your girl

  • Mine Alone   I KNEW ABOUT TYLER ALL ALONG

Without my knowledge, Drake drove me to his house. I hardly cared because I was absent-minded, my thoughts spinning with the possibility that Tyler might have discovered my whereabouts.I knew how dangerous he was. What if he hurt Jane or her father? It was almost 5:00 p.m., the time I was supposed to meet Mr. Smith about my original song, but it didn't matter anymore. How could I focus on my music when Tyler was closing in on me?"Hey."I slowly raised my eyelids. Drake had already opened the car door for me. He stretched out his hand, silently asking me to take it.I trusted him.I placed my hand in his, and he gently helped me out of the car. I was still wearing his jacket. The evening had grown chilly when we left the restaurant, so he had wrapped it around my shoulders before we got into the car."I've got you," he murmured softly as he caught me in his arms and guided me toward the house."Your house, huh?""Well, you looked like a frightened little puppy. I figured you'd feel s

Tyler’s POVThe cigarette burned slowly between my fingers as I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.Five weeks.Five damn weeks. And Evans had disappeared without leaving a single trace behind. The glowing ember reflected against the glass as I took another drag.Somewhere out there she was hiding, probably convincing herself she had won.Probably sleeping peacefully.Probably believing she was finally free.A bitter smile spread across my face.Nobody walked away from me.Nobody.Behind me, a chair scraped against the floor.Perry shifted uncomfortably.I glanced over my shoulder. The old man sat exactly where my men had left him.Tired and hungry. Yet somehow still stubborn.“You look terrible.”Perry ignored me.I expected nothing less. The man had spent weeks refusing to cooperate despite knowing how easily this could end.All he had to do was tell me where his daughter was.Simple.Instead, he chose suffering. Anyway, somehow I feel he doesn’t tr

  • Mine Alone   I WILL FIND YOU

In less than twenty minutes, Drake knocked on the front door, and I felt the urgent need to check myself in the mirror for what had to be the hundredth time.I stared at my reflection, smoothing down the fabric of my dress as nervous butterflies danced wildly in my stomach. Jane would probably laugh at me if she saw how ridiculous I was acting. It wasn’t as though I was going on my first date.At least, not technically. But this felt different.Everything about Drake felt different. For the first time in a very long time, I found myself looking forward to something. Looking forward to someone. The knock came again.“Coming!” I called out.I took a deep breath and headed for the door. The moment I opened it, my heart skipped a beat.Drake stood there with one hand tucked into the pocket of his dark trousers. His eyes lit up the second they landed on me, and a slow smile spread across his face. For a few seconds, neither of us spoke. His gaze travelled over me with an intensity that m

“I see someone did not ruin her relationship before it even started.”Jane blurted out at first sight of me as I walked through the door.I chuckled and ended up hugging Jane so dearly. It was as though I had needed that hug for a lifetime now.Jane didn’t hesitate to hug me back. It was always a pleasure for her to give me comfort.“It’s okay, Evans. I got you, darling.”The warmth in her voice instantly settled something restless inside me.“I see our Prince Charming brought you home. You could have invited him in.”“Drake? Into our house? No, thank you.”I laughed, and she giggled beside me as we took the stairs to our room. The thought of Drake alone was enough to make my cheeks warm.I couldn’t stop thinking about him.Actually, I wasn’t going to stop thinking about him. But, not tonight and definitely not after the way he had looked at me.Not after the way he always managed to make me feel safe.We got into the room, and I immediately sat on the bed while Jane dropped beside me

The car was not yet on the highway when Drake’s hand caressed my laps like he missed that feeling for ages. His hand literally slipped from the steering wheel down to my bare laps that were made visible because of the shorts I wore that day.In an SUV truck like his, with perfectly tinted glass, I was confident in anything that might go down.He moved my jaw without my notice and sucked my lips into his mouth. His hands ripped into my blouse and found a way to pull it open.“Do you normally do it?”I asked all of a sudden in the middle of the make out.“Do what?” he asked, trying to catch his breath and licking every part of me.“Put money in the purse of any girl you bring home.”He stopped after taking a last kiss from my lips.He paused and gazed deeply into my eyes.“No, I don’t bring girls home. And yes, I’ve slept with many girls in my life, but I don’t bring them home, Evans.”“Why did you do it then?”“Put money in your bag? Evans, I care about you. Aside from the breakfast, th
