Luther's POV

I walk to and fro the door so many times, but I can't bring myself to walk into that classroom.

To be honest, I would prefer to just leave. I want to go back home and tell my mother that we should move to a new town all together. But she is definitely going to say no.

My reluctance is enough to attract the class tutor, Mrs Mabel. She sticks her head out and squints those almond eyes at me.

“Excuse me, darling. Aren't you the young Mister Wayne?”

My fingers fidget as I walk to the door. “Yes, ma'am.”

Her warm face burst into a smile and she gesture for me to come. “Come in then, we are all excited to see you.”

Murmurs are bouncing around, but as soon as I walk in, the silence of a graveyard.

There are about thirty kids in this medium sized classroom, but I feel like I am standing in the middle of a bloody stadium.

“Guys, this is the new student that i said will be joining us today. His name is Luther Wayne, and he is seventeen years old. He is a unique student because he will be studying almost all the courses offered in the grade– he will be combining the sciences and arts. Um…. What else am I forgetting?”

She tap her hand on her chin. “Oh yes, he identifies as gay.”

I shut my eyes and curse under my breath.

My mother again, Janet Wayne will be the death of me.

I told her not to, countless times, but she has insisted to always tell any school that I am going to, that I am gay.

It's not a big deal, I've told her that she doesn't have to announce it all the time, but she won't hear about it.

Maybe it's because of the time I was twelve and got beaten up by the kids in my grades because of my queerness.

Now, the whole classroom is looking at me with different expressions on their faces, mostly standoffish unfriendliness, but nothing I haven't seen before.

“Okay Luther, you can take that seat on the third roll. We are all your friends here, so tell us if you need anything, okay?”

I force a smile as I walk slowly to my seat. I try not to pay attention to the whispers around me as Mrs Mabel get back to writing on the board.

“Hey,” a feminine voice to my left whispers.

I raise my head to see a girl with strawberry blonde short hair, smiling at me.

“My name is Bernice Huston.” She stretch her hand to me. “Nice to meet you.”

Oh my first interaction in a new school, that's record breaking.

“Likewise, Bernice. I'm Luther.” I say with a smile.

“Do you want to be friends, Luther?” She goes straight to the point, taking me by surprise.

My first friend in Densberry. This is so promising.

“Yes, sure, Bernice.” I nod.

“How is your math?” She ask.

“Pretty okay?” I shrug.

“Super! I hate math. You help me pass my math, and I will protect you from all these losers, deal?”

I stare at Bernice and then break into a short laugh. How is this smallish doll of a girl going to protect me from huge hockey players? but I like her already, so I say, “Deal.”

Someone throws a paper against my head and I turn around with a frown.

“It's the hockey players at the back,” Bernice rolls her eyes. “Don't worry, I will tell them to back off.”

I pick up the paper and slowly undo the crumble. It's a poorly drawn picture of a dick.

I exhale as I tear up the paper and toss it into my bag.

Densberry is going to be a handful…

*****

After three days, I have just kept mostly to myself.

I've gotten to know Bernice more. Her mother is a rich widow, she has worn only black since Mr Hudson died five years ago, but they are always designer clothes.

Bernice doesn't care about school that much. All she cares about is to get married as soon as she turns nineteen, like her mother.

Every boy in school tries to get her attention, but she doesn't even look at them twice. She calls them dumb boys.

Mrs Mabel is kind, but she is just the homeroom and English teacher.

The other teachers are more intense, and they've let me know that they won't slow down for me to catch up, but I've been doing fine on my own.

We've just taken a general calculus test yesterday, and Mister Hong, the strict maths teacher, gets in with the papers in his hand.

From the angry curl on his lips, everyone can tell that the test was a bomb. As usual.

“Oh Lord, here we go again.” Bernice rolls her eyes. “Marlon is probably the only one who has passed, and Mister Hong is going to scream his lungs out about it for the rest of the day…”

Mister Hong’s eyes move around the room. “Marlon Gustave. Where is he?”

“He just stepped out of the classroom, sir–”

At that same time, he is casually walking back in. Hands in his pockets.

“Stop right there.” Mister Hong orders.

“Yes, Mister Hong, what did I do?” Marlon shrugs. The spoiled nonchalant boy he is. How is he usually the highest in the math test?

Mister Hong flings the papers in his hands directly in Marlon's face, and everyone gasps collectively.

“An utmost failure, that's what you are! I have an agreement with the coach to suspend you from the team if your grade drops, and he will be hearing from me today. I expected this from everyone, but you?!”

Marlon shuts his eyes, as if he is trying his hardest not to hit the teacher in front of him.

“What's my score?”

“Ninety six percent!” Mister Hong yells on.

Marlon shrugs. “So? I'm always the highest, what has that got to do with anything?”

“The new kid got ninety eight percent! How dare you even raise your head?!”

Marlon's neck sharply turns to look at me, and it's like I can't breathe anymore.

Everyone's eyes are on me.

“Oh my God, you're the highest. Bernice holds her hand over her mouth. Why did you lie to me that you are just ‘okay’ at math?”

“Stand up, Wayne!” The teacher orders.

My legs straighten up immediately.

“You have shown this piece of shit that he better watch his back, else you are going to take his place, and I commend you for that. Tell him that he is a loser”

My eyebrows lift. “Ex– excuse me?”

“Look Marlon Gustave in the eyes and tell him that he is a pathetic loser.”

Marlon was staring at me intensely, as if daring me to do it.

“You're a loser, Marlon.” The words roll off my tongue very easily. Too easily.

A dry laugh comes from Marlon’s lips.

“Thank you, Wayne. Have a wonderful day. Same to the rest of you, losers. Except for Marlon, he is the biggest loser here.” He leaves the class with as much haste as he came with.

I don't understand what has happened, or why the teacher spoke to him like that.

It's as if Bernice could read my mind, because she leans forward and explains. “Mister Hong has been Marlon's private tutor since he was a kid. He gets really angry if Marlon is not the absolute best. Don't worry, Marlon's Dad approves of his methods.”

I hurriedly stand up and turn to her. “I need to go to the bathroom, Bernice.”

I walk out of the classroom before she can say anything.

I get into the restroom and stare at the mirror, almost not recognizing myself.

I splashed some water over my face a few times.

I am still partially blinded by the water drops in my eyes when the door or the restroom opens and shut quickly.

The next thing I feel is a heavy punch in my face, follow by another, and another.

I fall against the sink, eyes watering with pain and seeing the droplets of blood going down the drain from my nose.

My attacker grabs a handful of my shirt and pulls me up to his face.

“You ever try to embarrass me like that again, and I will fucking kill you. Do you understand?” He spit in my face.

Marlon. How can I forget the cologne he wears all the time?

    150. LUTHER I know he is angry, and it's all because of the marriage proposal thing that he said earlier. We never got to actually talk about it, because my life started to move downhill right afterwards, and I kind of went AWOL on me. He is ranting, exchanging hot words with his sister and best friend, while my heart gets heavier and heavier. It's all my fault. I was avoiding him, and now he is all hurt because of it. "Hey, Marlon, you need to calm down," I finally chime in, in a small voice, but immediately recoil when he glares at me. "Hey you, no one asked you! You better stand there and shut the fuck up!" He yells at me, making me blink in shock. He has never spoken to me like this. "Hey, don't talk to him like that!" Maybelline stands between us. "What the fuck is wrong with you?" William puts his hand on Marlon's shoulders, telling him to chill, but Marlon shrugs him off violently. "What's this about? When will someone start talking?!" He yells. "Did you tell them, Lut

    149. LUTHER To my greatest surprise, she nods, causing my eyes to widen. "She did?" My voice goes up and down. "What did she say to you?" Maybelline shrugs, like it's not a big deal. "Nothing serious, she was just really upset that Marlon stood her up. I knew he would never agree to take her to prom. I was tempted to tell her not to get her hopes up, but Marlon wouldn't let me. Everyone has just been acting strange since prom night, I don't understand..." I reach out to take her hand, and I give it a little squeeze. "You are sure that she never said anything else? Please, even the smallest detail would mean the world to me." Maybelline eyes squint, but she shakes her head negatively. "Is everything alright, Luther? Is there something you are not telling me?" I exhale, pushing the food away to the side. "Can I borrow your phone?" "My phone?" "I need to call William, it's very important." She looks down, her lips folded, and I imagine that she is trying to come up with a lie, b

    148. LUTHER I sit in the confinement for another six hours, too angry to even drink the water that they brought to me. This was a meticulous plan, because they know that I don't have the money to leave this place. How long do they intend to keep me here? I don't have fifty thousand dollars lying around, and I need to get out here to help mum..."Hey," I stand up, clutching the metal rods. "I want to make my phone call now!" The Officer, who has been patiently waiting around me, walks to me with a wicked smirk on his face. "Is that so? Have you suddenly gotten the money to pay for the bail?" "It's my right to make a phone call," I tell him. "It's not your business if I have gotten the money or not." ****I don't have a long list of emergency contacts to phone whenever I get into trouble, in fact I know I have to be at the edge of death before I call Marlon to help me, but I decided to call someone else. Maybelline. It's quite an inconvenience to call her with my problems, but

    147. LUTHER The feeling of standing at a crossroad. I feel like I could split myself into two halves, so that I can use one part to look for my mother, and the second to look for Bernice. Bernice still hasn't been found, and she also hasn't said anything, and that's the scariest part. I can't even sit still in my house, and yet I'm so lost on what to do. I don't expect for the door bell to chime, but it brings about great relief for me. William has definitely found one person, and he has brought some good news for me. As I rush in to answer the door, my excitement goes down the drain when I see that it's just an unknown man. He is in a beige jacket and black trousers. Definitely not in a police uniform, but I can definitely tell that he is a cop. "Luther Wayne?" He asks. "Yeah?" Something tingles in the back of my head. "My name is officer –" Bang! I shut the door straight in his face and started to back away into the house, hearing my heart thumping like a drum in my ches

    146. JANAE "Good morning, Mrs Cooper," a cup of coffee so strong that the smell hits my nose as they set it on the table. I sit up, rubbing my eyes as I look from my left to my right. I didn't sleep a wink, so that means that I look and feel like shit. "My son..." My charred lips move. "Like I said, an officer will visit him this morning. We have a lot to do, Mrs Cooper, so let's get into it." They are not as friendly as they were yesterday, but that's not even the most bothersome part of this entire thing. I finally sit down, and raise the coffee to my lips. They are both seated facing towards me, flipping through the huge files in front of me. "So, Mrs Cooper, we will start by reading your rights..." He goes on reciting the vomit-inducing statement, before flipping through some pages again. "Okay, so, can we go at this head first? You can start by telling us about the secret accounts you stashed the money away in." My hands spread on the table, palms facing up. "What fucki

    145. JANAE They didn't come with guns, or sirens, or anything to wake the neighbors up at this ungodly hour, instead they hold my shoulder as they led me out of the house. It is like a dream, not even the cold air on my face can convince me otherwise. "M–my son," I croak. "I need to speak to him, I need to explain..." "Don't worry, Mrs Cooper. Everything will be alright. Come with us in the car, while my partner goes to speak with your son." At least they don't bring those cold metallic cuffs that I have been dreading for ten years. They just take me to their unmarked car and put me in it. Only one of the officers gets into the car, while the other goes back into the house to speak to Luther. I hold my breath, waiting for my baby boy to burst through the door, screaming for his mother to be freed. That's definitely going to get the attention of the neighbors, and I can't help but feel so sorry for him. I'm so pathetic. I wish I had been able to give a better life to Luther..

LUTHER Standing in front of the Hudson mansion, this is the last place I would want to be right now. I adjust the sleeves of my leather jacket before raising my hand to ring the bell. I haven't brought any flowers for Bernice this time around. All the kindness I had for her has been replaced wit

MARLON Luther's phone call has caused something to settle in the pit of my stomach. I somehow knew that something was up with Bernice, but I sure as hell didn't even consider the fact that she would do something as wicked as this. Collins’ entire family has turned on him, even though they are

LUTHER I don't know why she would think that her wicked secrets are safe with me, but she opened her mouth and started to speak. LUTHER “Oh my God, Luther.” My mother has her hands pressed against her face. She looks traumatized by everything I have just told her about the Bernice and Collins case. We are both sitting in the living room, the fireplace crackling because I just threw him some good woods like a few minute
