I sat upright on my bed with the ghost of Kaelenâs scent still clinging to my skin and the weight of last nightâs decisions pressing on my chest. The cave, the storm, the way his body had felt so close to mine under that thin blanket... it all replayed in my mind like a fever dream. I touched my pendant, still warm, and sighed. I had to warn him. The hunters were coming for him at dusk. But first, I had to survive breakfast. * The market in the nearby town was busy as usual. Pa had sent me to pick up supplies since the compound was running low. Last time, I had an ugly experience at the market which made me return to the pack empty handed. I moved through the stalls, basket in hand, trying to focus on the list. That was when I saw her. My vision sharpened suddenly..... almost like it zoomed in without warning. A girl my age, with sharp features, fiery orange-red hair streaked with black, and clever amber eyes, was stealthily slipping goods into her cloak from one of the tradersâ stalls. She moved like liquid shadow. No one else seemed to notice. I blinked hard, rubbing my eyes. What is happening to me? She finished and melted into the crowd without a sound. I sighed and continued my own shopping, paying quickly before heading back toward the compound. Halfway down the forest path, I froze. The same girl stepped out from behind a tree, blocking my way. She gave me an unfriendly, assessing look and began circling me slowly. âYou smell⊠different,â she said, voice light but edged with suspicion. I cleared my throat. âWhat are you talking about?â She stopped, keeping a safe distance, and pointed at me. âYou saw me in the market, didnât you?â I didnât answer, surprised she had noticed me. âAre you going to report me?â she asked, tilting her head. I sighed and started walking past her. âIf I wanted to, I wouldâve told on you the moment I saw you.â âItâs rude to walk out on someone while theyâre talking to you,â she called, folding her arms. âMy bad,â I replied, heavy with sarcasm. âI have far more important things to do.â I kept walking. In a flash, my basket was snatched from my arm. Before I could react, she was already darting away through the trees with my foodstuffs. âHey!â I snapped, breaking into a run. âGet back here! You little thief!â I chased her as hard as I could, but she was too fast....unnaturally fast. My lungs burned and my legs felt like lead. Eventually I crouched on the path, breathing heavily, watching her figure disappear into the distance. âNow I wish I had reported her,â I muttered bitterly. * I returned to the compound empty-handed again. The moment I stepped into the courtyard, several hunters noticed. âLexiâs back... and still with nothing,â one of them laughed. âWhat happened this time? Another mysterious thief?â I kept my head down. âYes. I was robbed on the way back.â More laughter erupted. âRobbed? Again? Girl, youâre nineteen and you canât even handle a simple supply run?â Another hunter jeered, âMaybe sheâs not cut out for this life. Always running off at night, coming back with wild stories, weak as a kittenâŠâ âRunning off last night had the whole compound searching for her, and now this?â someone else added. âWe should tie her to the kitchen if she canât be useful.â The words stung. I clenched my fists, cheeks burning with humiliation and guilt. âEnough.â Paâs deep voice cut through the mockery like a blade. Everyone fell silent. âTomas, go get the supplies again. Lexi, inside.â Tomas gave me a reassuring nod as he passed. âYou hurt?â he asked quietly. I shook my head. âNo. Iâm fine.â But the guilt gnawed at me. I had spent the night with a werewolf while my family worried. And now I couldn't even help out with the least.. * Later that midday, I snuck around the edges of the compound, staying out of sight. I needed to know the exact plans. Near the armory, I overheard Gretoniaâs smooth voice speaking with Pa and the senior hunters. ââŠthe raid on the rogue happens at dusk. Use the new silver netting... itâll drop him instantly. Enhanced wolfsbane on the blades. This oneâs been causing too much trouble.â Gretonia chuckled. âThere are rumors of special blood in these woods lately. Powerful lines. We capture him alive if possible. Could be valuable.â My stomach twisted with instinctive disgust. The thought of Kaelen being caught, tortured, or killed made me feel physically ill. My hands started trembling. I gripped a nearby metal tool for support and accidentally crushed it in my palm without even trying. I stared at the bent metal, heart racing. How did I - What's this? What's happening? I made a mental note to find Kaelen as fast as possible. But it was almost impossible....Pa had stationed extra guards to watch me closely after last night. I hadnât told them where Iâd been, and I never would. I spent the rest of the afternoon pretending to train while my mind calculated escape routes. When they rested, I strategized. * Night finally fell. The compound grew quiet. I double-checked the guardsâ positions and chose a different, riskier route. Just as I was about to slip through the shadows and run, a blood-curdling scream tore through the air. I froze. No one else seemed to stir. Were they all asleep? The scream came again... raw and desperate. I hid quickly and traced it to Gretoniaâs private caravan area. Heart pounding, I crept closer and peeked through a small window. What I saw made my blood run cold. A girl was strapped naked to a table. Wait - the same thief from the market? Had she stolen from them? Gretonia stood over her with a smirk, his men assisting as they poured a lethal-looking liquid over her skin. She screamed again, as the liquid physically burned her skin, body convulsing. Then⊠something surprising happened. Her form shimmered and twisted. Fur sprouted, ears lengthened, and in a flash of colorful light, she transformed into a fox-like creature... sleek, with vibrant reddish-orange fur and multiple swaying tails. A kitsune. A gasp escaped my lips before I could stop it. I shot away from the window, heart hammering wildly, and pressed myself against the wall. What the hell?? They were other creatures like that? I only read about them in one of the books Pa kept in his personal library. Everything I thought I knew about the world was crumbling. Werewolves.. And now, a Kitsune? One that is in trouble. Because Gretonia seemed like he was enjoying every bit of it.đ«¶LEXIđ«¶The words refused to leave my head."He's hunting bloodlines."No matter how hard I tried to push them away, they lingered, echoing over and over like a curse.Bloodlines.What did that even mean?Merchant Gretonia was the fiercest, enemy of werewolves. Everyone knew that. He supplied hunters with silver weapons, wolfsbane poisons, and traps capable of bringing down even the fiercest beasts. So why would a Kitsune say he hunted bloodlines? The question sat heavily in my chest as I absentmindedly stirred the porridge in my wooden bowl."...Lexi?"I blinked."...Lexi!"A finger snapped in front of my face.I jolted."Huh?"Tomas burst into laughter."There she is."I frowned."What?""You've been staring into your breakfast for the past five minutes.""I have not.""You have.""I was thinking.""Oh?"He leaned forward with a mischievous grin."About who?""Myself.""Liar.""I'm serious."He folded his arms dramatically."You've been smiling to yourself these past few days.""I
đșKAELENđș Hidden deep within the Whispering Woods, beyond cliffs and waterfalls no ordinary hunter could cross, lay the last refuge of the exiled. The Hidden Valley never truly slept. Even in the quiet hours before dawn, it breathed with life. Small wooden cabins nestled between the ancient trees, smoke curling lazily from chimneys where someone was always cooking stew or baking bread. Children.. pups who had lost their original packs, because they had parents who chose to side with me, chased each other through the clearing with wooden swords, their laughter echoing off the rocks. One of the Delta captains, Garrick, was drilling a group of young scouts in the clearing below. An old Gamma sat on his porch telling stories to a group of wide-eyed young ones. A healer tended to a limping scout near the central fire pit. Someone hammered nails into a leaking roof while good-naturedly arguing with his mate about whose turn it was to fetch water. This wasnât a camp of broken, desp

Power burned through my veins like liquid fire, and a sharp headache pounded behind my eyes. Everyone... the hunters, Gretonia, the trapped wolves had frozen in place, staring at me in stunned silence. What did I just do? How? Kaelen was the first to break free. He tore through the weakened silver net with a savage growl and rushed to my side, his hand gripping my arm protectively. His touch sent a jolt through me, that same magnetic pull flaring hotter than ever. âYou..â he growled low, eyes wild. âRun.â The commandâs hold shattered. Hunters roared back to life, furious and confused. Gretoniaâs face twisted with rage as he pointed at me. âSeize her!â Chaos exploded. I moved on instinct, using everything Iâd learned from years among the hunters. I whispered quick directions to Kaelen as we fought side by side.
đ«¶LEXI𫶠My legs carried me away from Gretoniaâs caravan on pure instinct, but my mind was screaming. That girl â the thief from the market...had transformed into a fox creature right in front of me. Kitsune. Iâd read about them in old forbidden books, but seeing it⊠hearing her screams⊠it shattered something inside me. I pressed my back against the cold wall of the compound, breathing hard. The raid on Kaelen was happening soon. I had to warn him. But if I left now, that girl would die...or worse... under Gretoniaâs experiments. If I saved her first, the raid might start without warning reaching Kaelen in time. Guilt clawed at my chest. Two lives. Two âmonstersâ I wasnât supposed to care about. And yet I did. I waited, hidden in the shadows, until Gretonia and his men finally left the caravan, laughing about moving on to âthe main prize...the rogue.â The moment they were gone, I slipped inside. * The girl was still on the table, back in human form, naked and her white skin no

đ«¶LEXIđ«¶I waited until the compound fell into its deepest silence, the kind that only came after the night patrol had settled and the watch fires burned low. Paâs warning echoed in my head, but the pull in my chest had grown too strong to ignore. It tugged like an invisible rope, insistent and warm, drawing me toward the Whispering Woods.Slipping out through the old side gate felt both thrilling and terrifying. The heavy mist wrapped around me like a living thing as I crossed the boundary markers, the âNo Entryâ and âBewareâ signs looming like sentinels in the dark. My pendant glowed faintly beneath my cloak, a soft silver light that seemed to guide my steps. I told myself the heightened senses - the sharp scent of pine and damp earth, the distant howls that sent shivers down my spine were just adrenaline. Nothing more.My mind wouldnât stop replaying everything. The dream. The way his mouth had felt on my skin. The broken amulet piece burning a hole in my pocket. Who was he? Why di
