Prologue -

Five Years Earlier

I should have known something was wrong the moment Vanessa volunteered to help with the wedding.

My stepsister had never volunteered for anything in her life, not unless there was something in it for her.

Yet somehow, I ignored every warning sign.

The late-night phone calls, the strange excuses to be in every room with him, the moments Jason seemed distracted whenever she walked into a room.

I ignored all of it because I was stupidly happy.

In six days, I was supposed to become Mrs. Natalie Bennett.

I had spent months planning every detail.

Jason and I weren’t perfect, but we’d spent three years building a life together. Or at least I thought we had.

“Nat?”

I looked up from the seating chart spread across the dining table.

My father stood in the doorway, looking sober for once..

“Jason called,” he said. “He said he’s running late.”

I smiled.

“When isn’t he?”

Dad chuckled. “Fair point.”

Neither of us knew that would be the last time I smiled that day.

Three hours later, I found myself standing outside Jason’s apartment.

He wasn’t answering his phone, and normally I would’ve ignored it.

But we had a meeting with the caterer in less than an hour and I needed his approval on the final menu.

I used the spare key he’d given me years ago.

“Jason?”

No answer.

I stepped inside.

My stomach tightened.

A woman’s heels sat beside the couch. What scared me most was that I recognized those very expensive, red heels.

“No.” I whispered to myself.

My heart immediately started racing.

No. Not her. Not Vanessa.

I slowly walked deeper into the apartment, afraid of what I would find.

Then I heard it.

Laughter, mixed with moans coming from the bedroom.

I slowly reached for the knob, already feeling tears run down my cheek.

I opened the door and saw two surprised, yet unremorseful faces.

My fiancé and my stepsister.

For a moment, nobody moved or spoke.

The entire world stopped for me. I slowly placed my hands over my mouth, desperately trying to catch my breath.

Then Vanessa smiled, as if she’d been waiting for this moment all her life.

As if I was the fool who had finally arrived to collect the punchline.

“Natalie—”

Jason sat up immediately.

I couldn’t hear the rest. My ears were ringing.

I looked at Jason, then at Vanessa. Then back at Jason.

And suddenly everything made sense.

Every excuse, every cancelled plan, every suspicious glance, every single lie made sense now.

“How long?”

My voice sounded strangely calm. I wiped my eyes and stepped closer.

Jason froze.

“Natalie, please—”

“Oh please!” Vanessa cut in. “What are you begging her for?”

I ignored her, even if every bone in me wanted to pounce on her and rip her selfish self to shreds.

“How long?” I repeated.

Vanessa crossed her arms. “A year.”

The answer shattered whatever remained of my heart. A whole year? And she had been helping me plan my wedding with a smile.

While helping me choose wedding decorations, while standing beside me during dress fittings, while pretending to be my sister…she was having an affair with him.

I laughed.

Jason climbed off the bed.

“Natalie, listen to me.”

“No.”

I stepped backward.

My entire body felt numb.

“You don’t have to explain.”

“It isn’t what you think.”

That almost made me laugh again. Because it was exactly what I thought. I could see it with my own eyes.

I didn’t even know which hurt more between both of them. I had been with him for three years and I had been with Vanessa all my life. She was selfish, there were times were she was pure evil but I would’ve never guessed she was capable of this.

I turned and walked away.

Neither of them called after me. I even stood outside the door expecting Jason to run out to give some kind of explanation but he didn’t. And I knew Vanessa wasn’t the one telling him to. He didn’t want to beg and I knew it.

With tears falling from my face, I ran out to my car and sped off. I wasn’t even sure where to go but I just drove.

By the end of that week, the wedding was cancelled, and by the end of that month, I had cut off almost everyone. They all knew what was happening but stayed quiet. My dad was a weak drunk who rarely treated me like his daughter. My mother had been in and out of my life since I was a kid but somehow she still knew about them and supported them.

I moved in with Mia after that. She was my only friend.

I slept on the couch, even if she practically begged me to sleep in the bedroom. I lost all will to do anything. I took a break from work, I was eating breakfast by 10PM and rarely taking a shower. I was miserable.

And during it all, Mia was the only one who was there.

Until I decided I was done being sad. I picked myself up that night, got ready and went to the club.

Ther

e, I met a man who kept staring at me. Or at least that was what my intoxicated self chose to see.

I made my move on him.

I wish I didn’t.

NATALIE’S POVMia decided she was going to follow me to Carla’s house since she had to leave the office early. But by the time we got to Carla’s apartment, Ava looked perfectly fine. She was curled up beneath one of Carla’s knitted blankets, watching cartoons with a mug of warm tea sitting untouched on the coffee table. The second she spotted me, her entire face lit up.“Mommy!”She climbed off the couch before Carla could stop her and wrapped both arms around my waist.I laughed, brushing the curls away from her forehead.“I heard someone wasn’t feeling well.”She frowned dramatically.“I wasn’t.”I raised an eyebrow.“But I’m better now.”“So that’s it? Just like that?”She nodded proudly.“Carla made soup.”Carla appeared from the kitchen carrying a dish towel over her shoulder.“Don’t let her fool you,” she said with a laugh. “She only ate three spoons before jumping up and down again saying she was cured.”“I was!” Ava yelled.“You were not.”“I was.”I couldn’t help laughing as

LUCAS’ POVI read the same sentence four times. It still didn’t make sense. The contract sat open on my desk, waiting for my signature, but my eyes kept drifting to the glass wall separating my office from Natalie’s. She was typing away on her laptop, occasionally stopping to answer a phone call or jot something down in the notebook she carried everywhere. She’d settled into the job faster than I’d expected.Tom couldn’t stop praising her, Emily said she’d already organized half the mess I’d been ignoring for months. Even Ethan, who enjoyed finding something wrong with everyone, admitted she was doing well.None of it surprised me.The woman I’d met five years ago had been just as organized. She laughed at how chaotic my apartment looked after insisting on making breakfast before left.

  • My Boss is My Daughter's Father    Chapter 11

NATALIE’S POVI was halfway through reviewing a contract when my phone vibrated. At first, I ignored it. The entire morning had been busy, and I was still trying to prove to myself that I deserved to be here. Between organizing Lucas’s schedule, responding to emails, and preparing documents for a conference call later in the afternoon, I barely had enough time to think about anything else. The phone vibrated again.I glanced at the screen and immediately felt my stomach tighten.Unknown Number.Ever since Jason reappeared, those two words had become enough to ruin my day.Slowly, I picked up the phone and unlocked it.For several seconds, I couldn’t understand what I was looking at.Then my blood ran cold.It was me and Ava.The picture had clearly been taken outside Carla’s apartment building the previous morning. I recognized me and Ava’s outfits immediately. I even remembered what she had been complaining about when we were walking toward the entrance.Someone had taken that photo

  • My Boss is My Daughter's Father    Chapter 10

NATALIE’S POVThe document Lucas sent the night before had taken forever to finish. By the time I submitted the revised version, it was almost two in the morning. Then I spent another hour staring at the ceiling.Thinking about Jason and the money I didn't have.Thinking about why Lucas King had suddenly become interested in whether my daughter was feeling better. I wondered if he knew the truth and it made me worry. He couldn't have known. Except his mother told him which I doubt considering she did everything to get rid of me.The more I thought of him, the more confused I got.Thankfully, work gave me little time to think. The moment I stepped into King’s Corporation, Mia handed me a tablet and three sticky notes.“Good morning to you too.”

  • My Boss is My Daughter's Father    Chapter 9

NATALIE’S POVI stared at the spreadsheet on my screen for what felt like the hundredth time.No matter how many times I looked at them, they refused to change.I rubbed my eyes and forced myself to focus on work again.I was halfway through updating next week’s schedule when a shadow appeared at my doorway.I looked up.Lucas stood there with one hand in his pocket. My stomach did that annoying little flip it had started doing around him.“Mr. King.”“I’m leaving.”I blinked.“Okay.”“I have a meeting across town.”“I looked down at the papers.“But I didn’t receive any mail or appointment.”&ldquo

  • My Boss is My Daughter's Father    Chapter 8

NATALIE’S POVI woke up before my alarm. For a moment I laid there wondering what brought me out of my sleep so early. And then Jason came to mind.I immediately sat up and checked the time.Six-thirty. I wasn’t going to start worrying so early.I quietly got out of bed and walked to Ava’s room. She was still sleeping wrapped around her stuffed bunny like she was protecting it from the world. The doctor had been right. Whatever she’d taken was out of her system now.I stood there for another moment before heading back to the kitchen.I picked up my phone from the counter and went through my messages. There was a missed call from Jason, but no texts. No threats or new demands. And a single missed call should have made me feel less scared. It didn’t.I made breakfast while Ava got ready for the day.By the time she wandered into the kitchen, I had already decided what I was doing.I wasn’t staying home.Part of me had considered it since Lucas had practically given me permission. But sta

Chapter 3LUCAS’ POV I didn’t want to attend that meeting, but I was glad I did. Apparently, I had a new personal assistant. Not that I needed one, but mother insisted. But when she walked in and I got just a glimpse of her, my whole world stopped. It was a face I hadn’t seen in years, and neve

Chapter One - Natalie Pov: My phone started ringing before I could take a single sip. I looked at it in pure disgust. It was an unknown number and I wasn’t in the mood to even guess who it was. I stared at the screen, debating whether to ignore it. The phone rang again. And again. With a sigh,

NATALIE’S POVThe blood drained from my face.“How do you know where I work?” I asked.Jason laughed softly. It made my stomach turn, and he didn’t even have an intimidating voice on a regular day.“Does it matter?” He replied.“Yes, it matters.”“What matters is that I’m asking you nicely with all
