LOGINThe car with the bulletproof glass windows raced along the streets of New York City.
Aura was sitting, rigid, in the leather seat, gazing out the tinted window.
Her hands were clasped tightly in her lap.
She hadn't spoken to anyone since she left Whitmore Villa.
Alexander listened intently, opposite her.
He understood.
Within 24 hours Aurora lost her home, her peaceful life and her certainty of her future.
She needed space.
Not explanations.
Not apologies.
Just space.
Ethan Cole broke the silence in the driver's seat.
In five minutes we'll be here, sir.
Alexander gave a brief nod.
"Has Grandmother been notified?
"Yes."
She would not take no for an answer for waiting until Miss Whitmore herself.
Aurora looked away.
"Miss Whitmore."
Not "Mrs. Kingsley in the future.
That surprised her.
She had thought that all around her would regard her as if she had already accepted Alexander's proposal.
Instead...
They hadn't spoken of marriage since they had departed from the villa.
As if Alexander knew not to.
Twenty minutes later...
The limousine came to a halt in front of two massive wrought-iron gates.
Aurora looked outside.
Her eyes widened.
The gates were almost twenty feet high with an elegant silver crest that had the initials **K**. inscribed.
In front of them was the biggest private estate she'd ever seen.
Kingsley Manor.
The mansion seemed more like a palace than a house.
The circular driveway was lined with beautiful fountains.
Acres of finely manicured gardens.
Millions of dollars of luxury cars lay under a glass garage.
The manor itself was of white stone, with tall oak trees, and stood proudly.
Without conscious thought, Aurora whispered,
".Are people really living here?"
Ethan smiled.
There's just one extremely busy billionaire.
Alexander gave him a glance.
Ethan immediately cleared his throat.
"Well, sometimes his old granny as well."
It was the first time since yesterday...
Aurora almost smiled.
The convoy came to a stop.
Alexander was the first to step forward, before Aurora could reach for the door handle.
He walked all around the car.
Opened his/her own door.
Then stretched his hand out.
She stared at it.
You don't really have to continue to do that.
"What?"
"Opening doors."
"It's unnecessary."
Alexander's lips twitched into the tiniest smile.
"If a woman walks beside you...," my grandfather told me.
"All of the doors you open are open."
Aurora hesitated.
He then took her hand.
Her fingers were surprised by the heat of his fingers.
Strong.
Gentle.
Steady.
Before they arrived at the front doors, they were already open.
The old lady wore a lovely outfit of cream and was out in the street.
Her silver hair was combed into a neat and elegant bun.
She was a very dignified person for her years.
When she saw Aurora...
Her face softened.
"So..."
She smiled warmly.
"You're finally here."
Aurora blinked.
"Mrs. Kingsley..."
"Nonsense."
The older woman walked forward and into a soft hug with Aurora.
"I'm Eleanor."
Can call me Grandma.
Aurora froze.
Grandma?
She looked dazefully at Alexander.
He was as surprised as he could be.
Apparently...
His Grandmother didn't warn him about that greeting either!
Eleanor pulled her back and put her hand in front of Aurora's face in a loving manner.
"My goodness."
You're just as beautiful as Alex said.
Silence.
Alexander's eyes widened.
Slowly, Aurora shifted her gaze towards him.
"You described me?"
Alexander rubbed his back of his neck.
"I..."
It was the first time Aurora had ever seen him...
Embarrassed.
He turned his head away, evidently making an effort not to laugh.
Eleanor chuckled.
"Alexander, don't be so scared.
I heard of you talking about this girl for years.
Aurora's heart skipped.
Years?
She gazed into Alexander's eyes again.
She was completely ignored.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Eleanor put her arm with Aurora's.
"Come."
I'll take you to your room.
Aurora was astounded as they made their way into the mansion.
The chandeliers were made of crystals hanging from the ceiling.
The walls were adorned with original paintings.
Every hallway was filled with fresh flowers.
Everything was elegant.
Yet strangely...
Nothing felt cold.
It felt...
Lived in.
Loved.
A real home city.
Eleanor saw Aurora looking at a portrait of a family in the house above the large stairs.
It depicted Alexander as a youth next to his grandparents.
He looked happier.
Less guarded.
You've changed, Aurora whispered, but then realized she'd spoken out loud.
Alexander looked where she was looking and saw the portrait.
"Life does things like that."
The response he gave her was sad, she could see that, but she didn't understand why.
Eleanor took Aurora's hand in hers.
Some are responsible for so long...
"...and they lose their ability to smile."
Aurora looked at Alexander.
Just for a moment.
Their eyes met.
She wondered...
What was the most recent time he has felt completely happy?
Before she could ask-
There was a loud voice of a woman who was sharp.
"Alexander."
Everyone turned.
A tall, beautiful blonde girl came down the stairs, self-assured and wearing a designer gown.
She stopped when she saw Aurora.
Her smile disappeared.
She scanned his face up and down and her eyes turned cold before she focused her attention back on to Alexander.
"So..."
Her lips twisted into a derisive smile.
"This is the girl."
Alexander's face instantly tightened.
"Vivian."
The woman put her hands on her chest.
The other day I left New York on a business trip to...
I come back and tell you you have brought your best friend's little girl home...
She gave out a harrumphing laugh.
"If I'm not mistaken, I should tell you Congratulations."
".or phone the tabloids?"
It wasn't long before Aurora noticed a sudden shift in the atmosphere.
Kingsley Manor was cold, exactly as it had been when her mother was born.Moments ago the warmth that had filled Kingsley Manor was gone.
Alexander instinctively went in front of Aurora.
"Watch your words."
Vivian's eyes narrowed.
"Oh?"
"Already protecting your little wife?"
Aurora's cheeks flushed.
"We're not-"
Vivian cut her off.
I didn't say anything to you.
Alexander's voice went icy cold.
You will speak to her in a respectful manner.
Vivian looked at him in amazement.
Then slowly smiled.
"I see."
Thus the rumors have been confirmed.
She turned her gaze to Aurora.
"Knowing him, what kind of man is he you live with?
Aurora frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Vivian took one purposeful step forward.
Her voice was calm.
Cruel.
"Did Alexander say to you.."
".why he had never gotten married for so many years?"
Alexander's jaw tightened.
"Vivian."
However, she ignored him.
Her gaze never strayed from Aurora's.
"Or did he conveniently leave out the one woman who almost became his wife?"
The morning came and Aurora awoke to hear the rain pounding on the ancient glass window. Her head throbbed.Slowly she opened her eyes, the room whirred and whirled. She attempted to get up—She had her wrists bound to the arms of an old wooden chair."What..."In her heart was the panic. She pulled against the ropes."They're no use."It was a voice that was familiar to us, it was from across the room.Marcus Hale was standing by the fireplace, taking his time and pouring himself a glass of whiskey. He raised his eyes and smiled."Good evening, Aurora."She glared at him."Where's my father?"Marcus took a drink, one that was slow."Alive."I want to see him—"You will.""When?"If you're ready to tell me what I want to know.Aurora frowned.I don't know anything.Marcus chuckled. But, that's what is the issue. He came towards her.“All you've known as a girl is that you're the daughter of Richard Whitmore.”"I am."Marcus inclined his head."Are you?"Aurora's heart skipped. What do
In the hospital garden, Aurora quietly sat under the maple tree. But she didn't notice the evening breeze, that was blowing at her face. She had been trapped in Room 1808.Alexander had gazed at her with strange eyes.Polite.Respectful.Empty.It did hurt more than she wished. She closed her eyes. How can anyone not remember a whole romantic tale?"You don't."The voice was familiar and she was surprised. She turned.Alexander was a few feet away.He was wearing a hospital pants that were loose and a gray sweater with one hand in his pocket. Bandage under his collar showed through his collar. The idea is that one shouldn't be in bed.He smiled faintly. The doctor said that a short walk would be helpful.Aurora nodded awkwardly. Then came a period of silence between. Finally, Alexander spoke."Ethan told me..."“Then we have to get married,” I said.At the time, Aurora managed to pull a fake smile."We were."He noticed the one word."Were?"You can't remember me."So..."I don't know
Alexander's hospital bed was beside Aurora, who stood frozen. The room was suddenly too small.Too cold. The man had once looked at her in quiet devotion; now he looked at her with polite confusion.Alexander repeated, his voice hoarse, “I'm sorry.” “Do you know me?”Aurora swallowed the lump in her throat. She wanted to shriek. To remind him of all the talks they had had together. The balcony. The marriage contract. The bullet he fired at her.Rather, she grimaced into a shivering smile."I'm..."Her voice cracked."I'm Aurora."He nodded politely.Nice to meet you. These words cut deeper than any knife ever could and tore her heart apart.---Dr. Benjamin Carter gently escorted everybody out of the room.I've got to look into Mr. Kingsley's case.Aurora followed silently. She leaned against the wall of the corridor as the door shut behind them. There was a silence of several moments.Lastly, the doctor sighed.Fortunately, his brain scans revealed no permanent damage to his brain.E
When morning came, the first rays of sun light filtered through curtains of Alexander's hospital suite.Aurora hadn't slept. She was still at his bed, her fingers touching her hands and holding his.All that could be heard in the room was the constant beep beep of the heart monitor. She gazed at him and noticed his peaceful face.Alexander looked younger without the suits to his suit, the command and the cold business mask.Almost...Fragile.Aurora smiled sadly.Sir, you know Mr...“It's possible to truly frighten them, if it's a thing you want to do.”She pushed the hair that was on his forehead away from his face. But I still have 1000 questions, though. Why is it that you like me so?At what time did you first see it?“But why did you not tell me earlier of the time?”Then suddenly, she heard a soft knock on the door. The door was opened slowly.Eleanor walked into with 2 cups of coffee. There must be something eaten, my dear,” said he.Aurora shook her head."I'm not hungry."The
The heart monitor had a piercing sound in the helicopter cabin.Aurora's blood turned to ice."No..."She clutched the cool hand of Alexander with her cold hand."No, no, no... Alexander!"The flight doctor quickly jumped over the stretcher."Move back!"Aurora refused.I don't want him to leave!"Miss Whitmore!"Ethan pulled her away, taking a hesitant step, as the doctor began to perform compressions on her chest."One... two... three... four..."Another doctor had set up the defibrillator.A charge of 2 hundred joules.Alexander was in a deathly stillness. His complexion had started to turn as white as a sheet of paper. He was no longer breathing or rising and falling in his chest.Aurora's knees were tremulous. This couldn't be happening. Not after everything. She couldn't help but confess to herself her love for him.She didn't want him to be taken away at this stage."Clear!"Alexander's chest was hit by the paddles. He shuddered and his body shook. All eyes were focused on the c
A shot rang out and it still echoed throughout the deserted orphanage. The moment passed as if it were the most terrible moment on earth, nobody moved.Suddenly, there was a sharp, loud noise from Aurora, the quiet one."Father Michael!"She naturally stepped forward but was pulled up around the waist by Ethan before it was possible to expose herself.Don't approach Miss Whitmore!Alexander was on the go.As Father Michael hit the ground his years of self-control were gone."You bastard!"He hurries and rushes at Marcus.Marcus fired again.**Bang!**A bullet went through the air and landed on Alexander's shoulder. He didn't stop.He descended with a roar – rage filling him to the brim. The dusty ground was the terrain the pistol skidded on.Men threw out vicious punches to both.He was a man who a man knew how to fight. He gave Alexander a punch in the face.Alexander responded with a vicious punch to Marcus' ribs. They crashed into an old pew and a bit of wood broke.Richard was des
