My Family Died, Then Came Home
Penulis: Fern Zone

Chapter 1

Penulis: Fern Zone
My hand froze halfway through wiping away my tears. Cold sweat broke out across my back.

I knew that voice better than anyone.

It was Dad.

I forced down my fear and slowly turned toward the window.

Instead of the nightmare I had been expecting, I found Mom and Dad outside in raincoats, looking as kind and affectionate as ever.

But deep in their eyes, I caught a faint, unnatural flash of blue.

The news had just reported that my parents were dead, yet there they were outside my window, alive and asking me to let them in.

None of it made sense. They were supposed to be...

Dad seemed to notice my hesitation and said gently, "The family on the news wasn't us. We took shelter in a cave when the landslide hit, and it kept us safe."

Mom stood beside him with my brother, Max Blair, in her arms. All three of them looked exhausted.

"Open the door, Adam. Max is burning up."

The concern on her face looked completely genuine. Max's eyes were squeezed shut, his brow creased with pain, and beads of cold sweat covered his forehead.

I hesitated for only a second before unlocking the door.

Mom and Dad had never lied to me.

The moment the door opened, Mom rushed inside and gently laid Max on the bed.

I turned to find some fever medicine.

"We never should've gone hiking. Look how sick he is now," Mom said.

"The important thing is that we made it home safely. There's no use dwelling on it now," Dad replied softly.

Listening to them talk the way they always did, I finally started to relax.

"Did we scare you?" Mom asked gently as she reached out to smooth my hair.

"A little," I admitted.

Before long, Max's fever started to go down.

After washing up, we all went to bed.

When I woke the next morning, Dad was sitting on the couch watching the news, just as he had done every morning for years.

The landslide was still all over the news. The anchor was now apologizing for mistakenly showing photos of the wrong victims the night before.

"Due to an error by a member of our production staff, incorrect information was aired yesterday. We sincerely apologize to our viewers."

At last, the last of my doubts faded.

Ghosts weren't real. I was only scaring myself.

It was the second day of the holiday weekend, and Dad suggested we go out for lunch.

After we sat down and ordered, I realized I had no appetite. I didn't even touch the steak I usually loved.

Mom noticed and placed a piece on my plate before taking one for herself.

"This is delicious. You have to try it."

She popped the piece of steak into her mouth as soon as she finished speaking. Meat juices glistened at the corner of her lips, and she ate as though it were the best thing she had ever tasted.

It should've looked completely normal, but something about it filled me with dread.

I cut Evan off before he could say more. "No one forgot you. Mom and Dad searched for you for years."He froze, then let out a bitter laugh. "Searched for me? If they'd really wanted to find me, they would've. They were probably relieved to be rid of the burden."Mom suddenly rushed toward him. "That's not true, Evan. I'm sorry. I never stopped looking for you."Evan recoiled as if she had burned him. "Don't touch me! You're not my mother! My mother would never abandon me. She'd make dinner and wait for me to come home. She'd take care of me when I was sick. She'd love me no matter what. You're nothing like her!"After screaming himself hoarse, he was taken to the police cruiser. As the door closed, I caught a glimmer of tears in his eyes.I stood there and watched the cruiser disappear down the road, torn between too many emotions to name.Evan was dangerous, but he was also deeply damaged. That still didn't give him the right to hurt other people.Dad came over and gently pu

Dad looked at me, his eyes red. "Had we kept Evan at home, it was only a matter of time before he seriously hurt you. Sending him to a residential treatment center was the hardest decision we ever made. We weren't trying to get rid of him. We wanted him to get the help he needed, and we had to keep you safe." Mom could barely speak through her sobs. "But then, the facility fell apart. It became so badly mismanaged that we lost all contact with him. We searched for years but never found him. Eventually, we convinced ourselves that someone had taken him in and that he was living a normal life somewhere. I never imagined he'd end up like this."It sounded too unbelievable to be true. But looking at the devastation on my parents' faces, I knew they weren't lying.I forced myself to ask, "How did he survive on his own all these years?"Dad shook his head. "We don't know. We searched for him for ten years and never found a trace. Then the center shut down, and all its records disap

Mom stumbled to her feet, confusion written across her face. "Adam, what's going on? How did we get here?"I gritted my teeth before forcing out the answer. "My twin brother, Evan, did this."All the color drained from Mom's face.Dad froze, too. His mouth opened as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he simply followed me in silence."This way!" a voice called from up ahead.I looked up and saw Gabriel standing at the end of the hallway, waving us toward him. "I opened an emergency exit to the surface. Hurry!"I ran toward him with my family.Just as we were about to reach the exit, a piercing alarm sounded behind us. I turned and saw Evan standing at the other end of the hallway. The face identical to mine was twisted with rage, his eyes burning with madness."Do you really think you can escape?"He didn't raise his voice, but every word carried clearly down the hallway.I didn't slow down. "Close it!" I shouted to Gabriel.Gabriel slammed his hand against a

I took the glass and deliberately raised my voice. "Can't you talk to Evan and convince him to let me go? Aren't we supposed to be best friends?"Gabriel played along, rolling his eyes. "Who do you think I am? I'm just being paid to do a job. Don't make this harder than it has to be."As he spoke, he leaned down to straighten the bedding and slipped something small under my pillow.A key card.My heart jumped, but I kept my expression neutral. "Then can you at least get me moved to another room? There's nothing to do in here. I'm going crazy!"Gabriel straightened and let out an impatient sigh. "Fine. I'll ask, but don't get your hopes up."He turned and left. The moment the hidden door closed, I pulled the key card from beneath the pillow. It was a plain access card with no markings.I didn't make a move right away.Evan was clearly no ordinary person. Anyone capable of building an entire underground lab and creating nearly perfect clones had to have extensive security in pla

As if he were showing off, Evan Blair took me on a tour of the entire lab.The fake versions of Mom, Dad, and Max were sealed inside glass chambers, completely still as though frozen in time."They'll love me forever. They'll always accept me..."Evan stared at them through the glass, completely transfixed.I swallowed hard. "Your plan sounds perfect, but have you thought about what happens if the rest of the world finds out?""They won't. That's impossible."It was clear Evan couldn't be reasoned with, which meant the note Gabriel had slipped me was my only hope.I clenched it in my hand, my heart pounding so hard that it felt ready to burst.Whatever Gabriel had given me had to mean something. While Evan remained absorbed in admiring his perfect family through the glass, I quietly turned away and unfolded the note, now damp with sweat.A message had been scrawled across the paper in a hurry.[The server room's in the basement. I jerked my head up and scanned the store for anything suspicious.Nothing seemed out of place. How did they know I tried to find out who they were? Those few words made it feel as though they could see straight into my mind.[Who are you?] I typed, forcing myself to ignore my fear.Several minutes passed before they replied.[Who I am doesn't matter. What matters is whether you want to know the truth.]Before I could respond, another message appeared.[Harbor Café. Tomorrow at ten. I'll give you the answers you're looking for.]After that, they ignored every message I sent.I spent the entire night wide awake, sick with anxiety. At exactly 10 a.m. the next day, I arrived at the café. I had no idea how long I had been waiting when I noticed a young man standing near the entrance. He was wearing the exact same hoodie and baseball cap as me. Even the mud stains around the edges of his shoes matched mine.I was staring at another version of myself. He tilted his head and smi
