My day starts like any other, to the point of boredom. I ring a bell next to my bed, and a maid walks inside, pushing a cart with my breakfast. Today's meal consists of eggs Benedict, smoked salmon, and a side of fresh summer fruit. My favorite thing here, though, is the plain black coffee, which I start drinking right away. Sometimes I enjoy the simple things in life, and while I would be perfectly happy with scrambled eggs and toast, Grandmother always makes sure I get served the best. "You have to keep up a certain image, even at home," she has told me time and time again. "You're not the same filthy teenager you were when I found you. You're the CEO of a major company. You must always act like one." I try not to think about my dark past. I can never escape the nightmares of my little sister's death, but I do have some closure. Grandmother made sure to punish the bastard who killed her. As I finish eating, my butler, Robert, comes inside. "Remind me what's on today's schedule," I ask, wiping my face and allowing the little maid to bow and take the cart away. "You have a meeting first thing this morning with the board members and the chairwoman," Robert begins, and I have to stifle a groan. I hate dealing with those people. They always treat me as if I'm a toddler who can't make any decisions on his own. Robert gives me a sympathetic look but continues. "You have a lunch meeting with one of your donors, Stephan Hartman." That one's better. He's a good older man and one of Grandmother's old friends. He won't treat me like a helpless child, even if all he does is offer random words of wisdom. "After your usual work, calls, and paperwork, you have one final meeting late in the evening at Velvet Noir. It's more laid-back—just catching up with some of your business partners," Robert finishes. "The chairwoman wishes to remind you to stay proper either way." I let out a sigh and shake my head. Sure, I can try to do that, but I don't plan on it. It's one of the only times I get to drink and catch up with my friends. I plan on making the most of it. "Thank you, Robert. Have Amy pick out my suit and tie while I take a shower," I tell him as I stand up and stretch. My eyes linger on my bed, longing more than anything to have my fiancée next to me. "Ms. Thorn will be back from her business trip next week, Mr. Winters," Robert reminds me. "Just a little longer." He then leaves the room to let me get ready for the day. My heart pounds in my chest, and I can't help but smile. Kassandra will be coming home to me soon. I know her work is just as important, but I can't help but miss her every day. As I take a hot shower, I close my eyes and envision the love of my life. Kass is perfect in every way, with her soft, creamy skin, light brown hair, and beautiful blue eyes. They haven't changed at all since we were children, and even if she doesn't fully remember me, I remember everything about her. I shake my head, scolding myself for getting too excited. It's not worth it when Kass isn't here anyway. I step out of the shower and quickly dry off. It's going to be a long day, and I can't afford to be late. My hair is getting too long again, but I like it that way. Grandmother hates the style, but I won't let her take everything from me. I need something for myself. I step out into my room with just a towel around my waist. The little maid, Amy, jumps, and her face goes beet red. She must have just finished laying out my clothes for me. "I-I'm sorry!" Amy squeaks and bows her head low. "I-I'll get out right now!" Before I can say a word, she rushes out of the room and closes the door. I laugh softly and shake my head. Poor thing scares too easily. Kass told her off once when a similar situation happened in the past, but I smoothed things over then. Amy's harmless, and most of all, she's Robert's granddaughter. She knows her place, and that's all that matters. She's more afraid of me than attracted to me anyway, likely because of the many scars covering my upper body. I look down at the clothes she chose for me and nod in satisfaction. Amy knows me very well. A nice dark suit and dark blue tie will look professional and won't get too wrinkled during the many meetings I have today. She's such a good girl. Once I'm fully dressed, I make my way downstairs to the grand entrance of the mansion and look outside, spotting my driver waiting for me. As much as I want to drag my feet, I might as well get it over with. The ride to the office is nothing special, and many of the sights that used to awe me when I first came to live here mean nothing to me now. It's all the same nonsense that no longer pleases me. When we arrive at my workplace, I spot a familiar face and groan under my breath. Of course Grandmother would be out waiting for me. With her stern dark brown eyes and short light gray hair, she looks nothing like me, but I do see plenty of my mother in her. I step out of the car and walk over to her. "Good morning, Grandmother." I dip my head. "I hope your day is going well so far." Grandmother looks me over and taps her cane with her right index finger. "At least you look the part. You really do need to cut that mess off your head, though." Sounds like a passing grade to me. "I'd never do anything to embarrass myself, you, or the company," I promise and offer her my arm. "Shall we go inside?" She gives me a sidelong glance before nodding. "You've come a long way. You'd better keep it that way." She sighs. "Now if only you could choose someone decent..." I ignore her words as I walk inside with her. She's never liked Kass, but that doesn't matter to me. In the end, who I marry is my choice, and I love my Kassandra Thorn more than anything in the world.Nala The moment I get into Ky's car, I'm bombarded with questions about my health, especially since I'm so pale. I close my eyes and sigh, letting her rant and rave while I don't say a word. When Ky stops to catch her breath, I find an opening and speak. "I'm not sick or anything. I'm..." I hesitate before clearing my throat. "I'm... pregnant. T-that's why... I've been feeling the way I am." Ky stares at me, her mouth hanging open wide enough for a fly to fly into. She then speaks again. "Who's the father?" she asks in a demanding tone. "It better be some rich guy that you can squeeze dry!" I wince and sigh, shifting in my seat. "Ivan Winters..." The moment I say his name, I'm deafened once again. "What?! The guy you slept with was that arrogant Ivan Winters?!" I wince at Ky's loud voice and sigh, rubbing my ear. "And he knocked you up?! I'm going to give him a piece of my mind when we see him!" "N-no!" I shake my head quickly and hug myself. "I-I won't be seeing him... It was a
Ivan As soon as I get to the office, I make my way over to Janice to get the report. "You and Lloyd have everything together, right? Hand it here." I hold out my hand, expecting her to hand it to me. Janice, however, looks a bit guilty as she does so. Before I can ask why, she speaks up. "This is your copy. Lloyd also made one for the chairwoman." She dips her head apologetically. My heart sinks as I stare at the older woman. I know she isn't the one who betrayed me, but it still hurts to know she let this happen. I hold the file tightly as I make my way into my office, where I know Grandmother is waiting for me. I shut the door behind me and narrow my eyes, seeing Lloyd standing just behind and beside Grandmother. He looks at me with unblinking eyes, his allegiance obvious. Just how many more are spies? "Take a seat, Ivan," Grandmother orders, looking up from her reading. "And stop glaring like that. You're not a toddler anymore." She leans back in my chair. Of course she'
Nala I haven't been feeling well the past several days. I can hardly sleep, and when I do, I wake up in cold sweats. Also, the smell of certain foods makes me nauseous, especially meat and fish. I'm not one to complain, so I kept it hidden. That is, until last night, when Ky picked me up after work. We usually hang out on the weekends, but after that one night, I refused to let her drag me out to another nightclub or bar. I won't ever go through that again. The moment I step into Ky's house, a wave of nausea causes me to stagger. As Owen comes to greet us, I rush past him and head into the guest bathroom, barely making it to the trash bin before I empty my stomach into it. My throat burns, and my eyes water. It always hurts to throw up, but it's also incredibly embarrassing. Normally, I get odd, judgmental stares, especially since people assume I do it to myself. "Nala! Are you alright?!" I hear Ky's worried voice faintly, though all I can do is cough and pant heavily. It's hard
Ivan ~One Month Later~ Pushing everything aside, life goes on as normal. My weekends are still busy, but in a happy and pleasant way. I work hard on making a perfect homecoming for Kass and even get her some jewelry as a gift. Everything is just me making up for that mistake on that fateful Friday night. Kass will never find out, but either way, I still feel terrible about it. Since nothing comes on the news about any scandals, it will remain hidden forever. Soon enough, our five-year anniversary is finally here. We've been together for a long time before I finally pop the question. In worrying about everything being perfect, I take way longer to propose than normal. "What took you so long?!" I laugh faintly as I hear Kass's annoyed yet joyful voice in my mind. I'm surprised she didn't hit me harder back then, but in the end, everything worked out. That morning, after breakfast and a shower, I get dressed in my best suit with shy Amy's help and make my way downstairs. Robert wai
Nala "I couldn't find you anywhere last night! Who knew you were here, shacking up?" Ky hums softly. "Was the guy handsome? Did he like you?" My head is still swimming from a hangover, even if I don't let it show. It's easy for me to hide things from people. Even now, Ky has no idea her voice is giving me a massive headache or that my back and waist are incredibly sore. "It was him, Ky," I say, looking down at my lap. "That boy I told you about... my childhood friend." I close my eyes tightly. I can still see his panic and anger when he realized I wasn't "Kass." "Oh?" Ky thinks for a moment as if she'd forgotten, then beams. "Ah! That boy you always talked about! You had a huge crush on him! I'm happy you finally found him." My expression darkens, and I look down. "What's wrong?" Ky frowns. "Don't tell me he did something against your will..." "No!" I immediately say, shooting my head back up. "Not at all! I just..." I trail off and frown. "He doesn't... remember me. He had no
Ivan As I stir from a deep sleep, I faintly groan and nuzzle into something soft and warm. It reminds me so much of Kass that I begin to wonder if she came home early. Perhaps this is merely an illusion, but I welcome the feeling regardless. I pull it closer and sigh, wondering how I got so lucky to have such a fantastic lover. Without her, my life after losing everything would have been cold and cruel. I doubt I would have been able to bear it without Kass. As the body in my arms starts to stir, I can't help but chuckle. "What a nice surprise, Kass... I missed you so much, my love..." When I open my eyes, instead of seeing a beautiful and perfect sight, I see a groggy stranger. I freeze and immediately jump away, quickly assessing the situation. It's obvious what happened, and it makes my skin crawl. There's no denying the stench; plus, both of us are naked. The girl flinches back and rubs one of her eyes. She looks at me and pales, a faint flash of recognition appearing in he
Ivan As I drink, I start to drown out the others and look around. No one ever says anything of note after about fifteen minutes, so it's no big deal. Now we're just hanging out, drinking, and having our own form of fun. I take another drink, already on my third, and relax. It takes a while for al
Nala "I don't know about this, Ky," I say nervously inside a fitting room. "I feel like I need a jacket or something. Or at least some leggings." I hug myself tightly. "Nonsense! I'm sure you look lovely, so come on out and let me see what it looks like," Ky calls out cheerfully, making me sigh.
Nala I'm just getting out of work when I check my phone. Many texts and missed calls from Ky greet me, which immediately worries me. I get to the bus stop and dial her number. "About time, little whore!" Ky's cheerful and happy tone greets me on the line. It's slightly muffled by wind noises so I
Ivan "I'm heading out now, Janice. If the chairwoman asks for my report, let her know I've already emailed it to her," I tell my secretary as I head for the door. I want to get out of here before I run into her. Janice follows close behind and nods. "Yes, sir. Here's your file for your final meet
