LOGINEleni's Pov
I was confused. Dead? How? He had left to go job hunting that morning because the Makris brothers had fired him after he had retuned the money. I had urged him to find something that won’t involve working with criminals. The cop told me dad had taken his own life by jumping off a bridge. His motorcycle had been found near the bridge with his suicide note on the seat. I burst into tears. Nick heard the commotion and came into the living room. He too began crying when he heard the news. I couldn’t believe it. Why would dad do something so selfish? Mom may have been mad at him, but Nick and I loved him. Despite his gambling he was a good father. Days ago I had told him of my plans to open a bakery and make enough to make our lives easier, so why couldn’t he have waited? I found out the answer days later. I came home after a long day of baking pastries for a wedding, to see mom and Nick trembling with fear in the living room. A stocky dark haired man, with mean grey eyes sat across them. Some men I guessed were bodyguards stood in a corner. The man looked at me as I came in and leered as his eyes rested on my hips. I knew immediately this was going to be bad. “Leni this is Alexios Makris.” Mom said. I could hear the fear her voice. “Sit down he has something to tell us.” Cold with fear I sat down beside her. “Hello Leni, I am here to recover the money your dumb dead son of a bitch dad owed us.” He said. I wasn’t happy to hear him insult my dad but I was too scared to show it. “What? But he paid you back the $3000, didn’t he?” I asked confused. “It wasn’t $3000! The bastard lied to us.” Mom fumed. “It was $100,000 he stole and lost gambling.” I was glad I had taken her advice to sit down, if not I would have collapse from shock. $100,000! What the hell Dad! "After he stole the money, he asked us to give him time to pay it back. We gave him two days. Then the next day he somehow managed to get $3000 which he used to gamble, and lost again. The next we heard the bastard had killed himself. We want our money back and we want it now! Or you guys are going to recive all the delicious torture we had planned to give the asshole.” He warned. We all swallowed fearfully. We had heard how brutal the Makris brothers could be. “You will get half of it on Saturday. Two months time you will get the rest.” I said quickly. He looked suspicious. “Your loser dad said the same thing, why should I believe you?” “Because I’m not my dad. On Saturday I will bring the money to your office.” I promised. "You better, or else we will take our payment in kind!" He licked his lips and grinned evilly. "You will get your money!" I said firmly. Mom looked at me as if I was insane. As soon as they left she exploded. “Are you crazy? How can you make such a reckless promise! Where are you going to get $50,000?” “From the money I saved for my bakery.” “If you have saved so much then we should use it to flee town.” “No mom. Running away isn’t the answer. If we leave they will consider it an insult. They will do everything to find us and teach us a lesson. We will stay and pay them back, then we’ll be free.” “Stop talking like an idiot!” She snapped. “If we go far away the will never find us.” “The Makris are rich and powerful. They will, and it will be worse. My way is better.” I said gently. Nick who was watching us, spoke up. “Leni is right Mom. We can’t make Dad’s mistake. We should stay.” I saw my mom’s eyes darken then she shrugged. “Fine. Let’s go and count it to make sure it’s correct I don’t want any nasty surprises.” She said. We went to my room and I brought out the money for under my mattrass. We counted it together. “$50,000 exactly. When I give it to them on Saturday it will buy us time.” I said. “Sure. On Saturday evening when you get back from work, we will go and see the Makris brothers together.” “Things may get a little difficult for us, but don’t worry Mom. Once we pay off the debt we will start afresh. We will be okay.” She forced a smile and I had the uneasy feeling she was up to something, and she was. On Saturday evening I came back disappointed. The anniversary party I was supposed to make cakes for had been cancelled so they hadn’t needed my services. But my disappointment turned to shock when I entered the living room and found it empty. What had happened? Had the Makris brothers been here and kidnapped my family and our furniture? I looked at my watch. I wasn't late, I still had an hour before I went to see them so that couldn't be it. I called out for mom and Nick but everywhere was quiet. I rushed into Nick's room. It was empty, so was my mom’s. Then something hit me. Trembling, I went to my bedroom and raised the mattress, then gasped in horror. My $50,000 was gone.Alora walked in. “She is my cousin’s wife and she needs the kitchen.” Alora told Gracia. “But she tried to poison the Don. It’s not safe letting her near food.” Gracia argued. Alora folded her arms and looked her in the face. “I don’t remember anyone asking your opinion on our family issues Gracia,” she said. “Nick gave you an order and it stands. Now get everyone out so Jane can bake. Unless, you want me to tell Nick your orders supercede his.” Gracia shivered a little then turned and began giving orders. Minutes later the kitchen was empty. “Now I’ve helped you deal with the lions, get to work. I’ll see you later.” Alora smiled. “And remember to keep your cake safe. We have a poisoner on the lose.” Eleni stared after her, greatful and slightly amused. Then she got to work. As she made the pastry she didn’t even remember her problems. Baking always helped her relax. When she was done she thought about giving some to the staff as usual, then shook her head. They woul
Mia carefully studied the information she’d gotten from her source. It wasn’t much, but it would help. Now she knew the rat Jane had been picked up from a homeless shelter. Her face darkened. A homeless rat, that was who Nick had dumped her for. He would regret it. She was sure she would find something in Jane’s past that would make Nick regret his decision. Her mother rushed in, startling her.“You will never guess what I just heard.” She said sitting beside Mia.“Jane Harris is dead?” Mia asked hopefully.“Not yet, but from what I heard she soon will be. She tried to poison Marco.”Mia’s eyes widened.“Are you serious mother?”“He is in hospital right now. Helena called me from there. The doctors said the poison was in the cake the little snake gave him.”Mia rolled her eyes. “If he was stupid enough to eat anything she offered him then he deserves to die. This is good news. Did Julia say if Nick is torturing her right now?”“No. That’s the only annoying part. Julia wants her dead i
“Mom please! This isn’t the time to bring your personal dislike out.” Niccolo said, slightly impatient. “This has nothing to do with my dislike. I have evidence. I spoke to Gracia. She said Jane gave your father the cake and also made him a cup of tea. Both were poisoned. And she didn’t call for help till Gracia came in-“ “But she gave CPR that saved his life. Why would she do that if-“ “She didn’t. Gracia did. Jane was just standing there watching your father die, till Gracia walked in and began giving him CPR.” “Is Gracia sure about what she is saying?” “Are you doubting her? Don’t tell me you will take the word of that snake over a trusted servant like Gracia?” “But why would Jane want to kill dad?” “Isn’t it obvious? She was sent to do so, obviously by one of our rivals. And you foolishly brought her into the family.” “Jane isn’t working for anyone. I’ve checked her out –“ “Not well enough.” Julia snapped. “Even if she isn’t working for anyone, she could have tri
“Marco!" Eleni dropped beside him and immediately began giving CPR, while calling for help.Footsteps thundered through the hallway and Gracia rushed in.“Call an ambulance! Quickly!” Eleni screamed.“What happened? What did you do?” Gracia asked frowning at her.“Call an ambulance!” Eleni yelled impatiently.Gracia obeyed. More maids and guards rushed in. Not long after an ambulance arrived and Marco was taken to hospital.A guard ordered everyone out of the living room.Eleni made her way upstairs, still shaken. Gracia appeared in front of her.“What happened to Signore Romano?” She asked, still looking suspicious.“I think he had a heart attack.” Eleni said.“Impossible. He is very healthy and has never shown any sign of such a thing,” her eyes narrowed. “I saw the smashed teacup, he was drinking tea? Did you make it?”“Yes. He was eating the cake and asked for tea-““You gave him cake too? Sweet desserts are perfect for masking bitter flavors.”Eleni felt herself grow cold.“What
At dinner the loss of Golden Palace was all they could talk about.“I don’t believe Davide would go as low as stabbing us in the back.” Julia said, “I thought he was too honorable for that.”“He is a Conti, they are all dishonorable bastards.” Niccolo said through clenched teeth.“I won’t accept this.” Marco fumed.“We can’t start a war over this. It’s too risky.” Julia said.“So we should fold our hands and do nothing?” Marco asked.“Why not let them screw themselves with the restaurant and find another?” Alora asked.“There is no other. That’s why we wanted that one.” Niccolo explained.“Why not make one.” Eleni said quietly. “Open a restaurant, get the chefs from Golden Palace to work for you and turn it into another Golden Palace.” Marco, Niccolo and Alora looked at her with admiration, while Julia frowned.“Quiet! This won’t be happening if it weren’t for you.” Julia snapped.“She has nothing to do with this mother.” Niccolo said firmly.“And her idea is good.” Marco added. Ele
Marco was still smiling as he entered the building. The staff, who had never seen him with anything but a frown, were surprised and worried. Niccolo was surprised too. Was he still smiling from that conversation at breakfast? Did Jane have such an effect on him?“Your smile is scaring the staff.” Niccolo told him as he followed him into his office.“That is their business.”“And me too. Don’t tell me it’s what you and Jane talked about that’s making you smile?”“It is. It brought back memories. I can’t wait to taste her dessert. Having her around may not be so bad after all.”Niccolo hid his surprise, Jane had managed to win over his father. Maybe she would win his mother over too, but if they grew to love her, what would happen after the six month deadline. He’d made a promise and he would keep it, unless he could convince her to renegotiate. He didn’t have much time to think about it. PRESCO's PRO brought bad news.“Sirs, this is the news making rounds this morning.” He said showing
Eleni's PovI was dressed and ready for breakfast when I heard a firm knock. “Come in.” I said, knowing it was a maid with breakfast. I hoped it wasn’t Gracia. After the kitchen incident she had avoided me, but I could feel the hate coming out of her whenever we were in the same room. Niccolo e
Eleni's Pov My hand froze in mid air. What did I just hear? I pressed my ear to the door. “I’ve been told he is with the Romano family in New York and is here to spy on us. I want you to question him, then get rid of him.” Alexios told his men. I almost gasped at the word question. I knew it
Eleni's Pov In my sleep walking state I had bumped into someone and the bottles of wine had fallen off the tray and shattered all over the floor. My eyes widened in horror. Where the hell am I going to get the money to pay for this? I am so dead! I thought. I looked up to see who I’d run into an
