Chapter 3

مؤلف: The Sunken Official
Lucas' POV

Just then, Madeline's phone rang.

I could clearly make out Jeffrey's voice from the other end.

"Maddie, Melvin suddenly spiked a fever. I don't know what to do."

"Don't panic. I'll be there right away."

Without a second thought, Madeline turned the car around at the cemetery gates. In her rush, the tires rolled over Leo's funeral wreath, destroying it completely.

"The company needs me back for overtime. I have to get there right away."

I stood and watched Madeline drive off into the distance. Then I walked into the cemetery by myself.

My gaze came to rest on Leo's black-and-white portrait.

All Leo had ever wanted before he died was to see his mother one final time, but that wish was never granted.

I managed the entire funeral by myself, greeting relatives and thanking every person who had come to mourn.

After the service ended, I personally lowered Leo's urn into the ground.

Memories of all the years we had leaned on each other came flooding back, and the pain I had been holding in finally overtook me.

A gush of blood burst from my mouth as I collapsed in front of Leo's headstone.

When I woke up, I found myself in a hospital bed.

I managed to pull myself up, and when I passed the room next door, I spotted Madeline at Melvin's bedside, tenderly wiping the sweat from his forehead.

Apparently, this was what she meant by "working overtime".

I had known all along that she had left to be with Jeffrey and Melvin, but seeing it with my own eyes still sent a searing pain through my chest.

Leo had always been left to suffer alone whenever he fell ill.

I had heard him cry out for Madeline through the pain on so many occasions, yet she had never once shown him any tenderness or come to his side.

I took a deep breath and brushed away the tears that were threatening to fall.

Leo was gone. There was nothing left in this family worth clinging to.

"Lucas? What are you doing here?"

Jeffrey's voice snapped me out of my daze.

Madeline's hand paused for just a moment before she coughed lightly and said, "I just finished my shift. I heard Melvin was sick, so I dropped by on my way home."

I mustered a hollow, forced smile.

What was the point of keeping up the lie now?

"Maddie, I'll leave Melvin in your hands. Lucas and I haven't seen each other in ages. We'll have a little chat," Jeffrey said casually, like he was asking his own wife to mind their son.

After he led me out into the corridor, the friendly mask slipped from his face, replaced by raw contempt.

"I've come to realize Maddie is a truly wonderful mother. Look how thoroughly she cares for Melvin."

I clenched my fists but said nothing.

Jeffrey threw me a look, then deliberately blew a cloud of cigar smoke right in my face. The thick, acrid smoke burned my throat and eyes.

"Maddie covers everything for Melvin and me. She said it's not easy raising a kid alone, so she hired a live-in nanny for us and even got me a personal fitness trainer."

He gave me a once-over and sneered.

"As for you… Why do you look like you're on your last legs? You look completely wrecked."

For 18 years, I had worked 14 hours every single day to support this family, living as sparingly as possible just to save whatever I could.

Leo, too, had done his part. He used to collect empty bottles after school to earn whatever small change he could.

From the time he was young, the two of us had endured more shame and humiliation than anyone should ever have to bear.

My heart had long since died, and I was too spent to argue back.

"A woman spends her money on what she loves," Jeffrey said with a smirk. "Maddie checked out of your marriage years ago. If you have any dignity left, you'll pack up and leave."

I stood there in silence, saying nothing.

He was right.

From day one, Madeline had only ever truly loved Jeffrey and Melvin. To her, Leo and I were nothing more than a joke.

Then Jeffrey leaned in, dropping his voice with a smirk.

"Oh, right. A few days ago, Maddie bought Melvin a sports car. While he was out racing, he plowed into some student working a part-time gig. No clue whose son he was. Such a shame…"

"What did you say?"

I turned sharply toward him.

Lucas' POVWhen I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital bed. Madeline was beside me, clutching a medical report with trembling hands."You have terminal stomach cancer… Lucas, why did you never tell me? Why…""Isn't this what you've always hoped for?" I said, looking at Madeline with a flat, emotionless stare, like she was someone I had never met before."Leo is dead, and I don't have long left either. Before you know it, you'll be free to stand beside Jeffrey in broad daylight, with no one to answer to. How perfect.""Lucas, please don't say that. I know I was wrong."Madeline fell to her knees at my bedside. Perhaps this was the first time she truly understood what it meant to lose someone forever—and what she had done to bring it all about."Lucas, don't worry. I'll bring in the finest specialists from every corner of the world. I won't let you go."In less than an hour, the nation's top oncologists had assembled at the hospital. It was also the first time I real

Third-Person POV"Good job, Melvin. With Leo out of the picture, you're now the city's top scorer. Every top university is going to want you. You owe Maddie a big thank-you."Melvin looked across the street at Madeline and ran toward her with a bright smile.Suddenly, a speeding dump truck came barreling down the road. It plowed into Melvin, and its massive 22-foot wheels rolled over him, crushing every bone in his body."Melvin!" Jeffrey screamed, his face drained of all color."Someone call 911! Maddie, you've always treated him like your own son. Please, you have to do something! Save him!""My own son?" Madeline said coldly, turning to face him. "He was never my son."Behind her, the dump truck's engine roared back to life. In that crash, Melvin and Jeffrey both lost their lives.…When Madeline returned to the cramped apartment, everything was exactly as she had left it. She hadn't allowed anyone to tidy up. She spent her days staring at the wall full of certificates,

Third-Person POV"My final exam results were released today, and I came in first in the entire grade. The school is having a parent-teacher conference, and I really wish Mom could attend just once. She's never come to a single one. My classmates make fun of me and say I'm a kid without a mother."…"I've finally finished the SAT. Now I'm going to get a part-time job. I'm all grown up, and I can finally help Mom support our family…"As she read Leo's familiar handwriting, Madeline felt a sharp, piercing ache in her heart. For 18 years, she had given everything to Jeffrey and Melvin, trying to fill the roles of wife and mother in their lives to repay a debt she felt she owed. She had given Melvin the loving family she believed he was entitled to, but she had never stopped to think about what Leo had gone through over the years.Tears welled up in her eyes as she traced the diary's battered cover with her fingers. They spilled onto the pages, smudging the dried tear stains Leo had

Third-Person POVMadeline's eyes widened in shock, and she staggered slightly. For reasons she couldn't explain, her thoughts drifted back to the day Leo was born. She had held Lucas' hand with a glowing smile as she lovingly chose their son's name."Let's name him Leo. All I want is for him to grow up safe and sound."How could Leo be dead? She had always believed in raising Leo modestly. Unlike Melvin, who had been tutored in every subject since he was little, Leo had never had any of those advantages. How could he possibly have become the top SAT scorer?Madeline suddenly looked at the police officer. "Where's the victim's family?""The victim was raised by his father alone. The father has already hired an attorney and has refused all offers of compensation."At that, Madeline let out a breath of relief without quite knowing why. She raised her hand and wiped the cold sweat from her brow. The victim appeared to come from a single-parent family. It couldn't possibly be

Lucas' POVJeffrey backed away on purpose, then collapsed onto the floor in a dramatic heap. The very next moment, Madeline rushed in. Without even a second's pause, she drove the sharp heel of her shoe straight into my stomach. Then she gently helped Jeffrey up, careful to avoid the bruise on his calf.Jeffrey clung to Madeline's arm, pretending to be in pain."It's okay, Maddie. Lucas probably just got the wrong idea about us. If he needed to hit me to blow off some steam, I can take it."Madeline shielded Jeffrey behind her and fixed me with a cold, piercing stare."Lucas Hayes! Jeffrey's already had a difficult time raising a child by himself, and you keep piling on more trouble for him! How could you be so vicious?"I crashed to the ground, and a searing pain rippled through my abdomen. A mouthful of blood surged up my throat and spilled from my lips.Several medical staff rushed over at the noise."Treat Jeffrey first!" Madeline commanded."Mrs. Hayes, but Mr. Hayes is
