Chapter 1

By the time I arrived, the rescue team had just brought down the shark with a tranquilizer dart.

A vast stretch of the ocean had turned red.

I dove into the water without hesitation and cradled my daughter, Violet Fuller, in my arms. The shark had mauled her badly. The sight of her left my eyes filled with tears.

Tears streamed down my face.

I had only stepped away to buy some water. I had been gone for less than an hour.

How had my healthy, cheerful little girl ended up like this?

When Violet saw me, her unfocused eyes briefly cleared, as though my presence had pulled her back from the brink.

She parted her lips and murmured weakly, using what little strength she had left.

I leaned closer and heard her say, “Daddy, it hurts. It hurts so much… Daddy, my hand’s gone, isn’t it? Why doesn’t Mommy love me anymore?”

My entire body began trembling. As Violet’s eyes drifted shut, I called out to her over and over again.

“Violet, no! Violet, stay with me! Look at me, please. Please, just look at me.”

She did not respond. Several medics rushed over and pulled me away.

“Sir, please step back! Let us do our job!”

I watched as the tiny, blood-soaked Violet was lifted onto a stretcher.

I spent that entire night outside the operating room, staring at the red light above the doors. I was too afraid to close my eyes.

Not once did my wife and Violet’s mother, Eunice Fuller, think to call.

I had no trouble finding out what she was doing.

She was all over the news.

The hospital television was airing a report about a shark attack in the deep waters off Bayport.

In the report, Eunice was being hailed as a hero.

She had rescued a seven-year-old boy from the jaws of the shark.

That boy was Toby McCreary, the son of her first love.

On television, she held the terrified Toby in her arms and comforted him with great patience.

Yet she did not spare a thought for her own daughter, whom she had abandoned to the shark.

When Eunice explained that she was a marine animal trainer, the reporter praised her as a true hero.

She smiled bashfully at the compliment.

I stared at the screen, unable to contain the fury raging inside me.

What kind of hero would choose to save a child she was not even related to while leaving her own daughter to die?

Why was the son of her first love the only child whose life mattered to her?

Did our daughter not matter at all?

My fury reached its peak when I watched the surveillance footage that a friend had gone to great lengths to obtain for me.

The camera was mounted on a nearby lighthouse. It had captured Eunice’s every move in perfect clarity.

The footage showed her deliberately leading both children into deep water.

At first, everything seemed normal, apart from the fact that Eunice only paid attention to Toby and completely ignored Violet.

Then, Toby screamed. A thirteen-foot great white shark had appeared nearby.

What Eunice did next left me frozen in horror.

She reached out and dragged Violet toward her, even though Violet had been the farthest from the shark.

Before Violet could react, Eunice bit into her finger hard.

Blood seeped from Violet’s fingertip as she looked up at Eunice in tears.

Even that failed to stir the slightest trace of compassion in her.

Eunice simply pulled Toby into her arms and swam faster toward the shore.

She left Violet behind to struggle after them with feeble strokes.

Blood from her fingertip spread through the water in her wake.

What happened next was almost too horrific to watch.

The shark closed the distance effortlessly and opened its enormous jaws.

A much larger cloud of red spread across the surface.

If my wife had looked back even once, she would have seen the horror unfolding behind her.

However, she never did.

My hands trembled so violently that I could barely hold my phone.

Before I realized it, tears streamed down my face.

I clutched my head and berated myself over and over again.

I hated myself for not getting there sooner.

Even more, I hated myself for not taking Violet away from that cruel woman long ago.

My sweet Violet…

My little girl would pout and cling to me whenever she needed a shot.

How much pain must she have gone through when the shark tore into her?

How helpless must she have felt when her mother abandoned her?

I could not even begin to imagine it. I was too afraid to even try. The agony tightened around my chest until I could barely breathe.

I thought, ‘Eunice, Violet’s your daughter. How could you be so cruel?’

Just as Eunice was on the verge of breaking down, I had the private investigator show up at the right moment. He handed her the teddy bear with the built-in voice recorder. It contained one recording that I had not played for her.Through her tears, Violet asked, “Teddy, what should I do? That older boy Mommy brought over hit me again. “He even got some other boys at preschool to pull up my skirt. I’m scared to tell Mommy because it’ll make her sad. Teddy, what should I do?”After that, Eunice broke down and sobbed uncontrollably.Toby, the boy she had always doted on, was the one behind Violet’s bullying. The bitter irony was that she had abandoned a daughter who loved her so deeply to a shark for the sake of that monster.Eunice clutched her head, seemingly unable to make sense of it.When Eunice returned home in a daze, Matt was thoroughly drunk, thanks to the people I had sent. Toby sat beside him, caught up in his father’s excitement. From the doorway, she heard Matt sn

Unable to get any help from me, Eunice had only Matt left to turn to.I made sure that Matt received his share as well. His life had become equally miserable.I published his personal information and exposed him as the man who had broken up another man’s family.I hired a private investigator to keep me constantly updated on their miserable circumstances. Then, I sent group after group of local thugs to teach him a lesson every few days.Money certainly made life convenient. I could make someone suffer without even lifting a finger.Matt was forced to spend every day hiding and constantly looking over his shoulder.Even Toby was shunned at school because of him.The day Eunice went to see them, Toby came running home in tears.Eunice was about to approach him with concern and ask what was wrong, but Toby suddenly shoved her away and glared at her with hatred. “This is all your fault! You bi—”Before Toby could finish, Matt clamped a hand over his mouth.Matt gave the star

“As long as I what?” Eunice’s spirits lifted as she urged me eagerly.“As long as you sign the divorce papers.”With that, I slid the papers across the table toward her.She swayed on her feet and stared at me in disbelief.“Don’t you love me anymore, Phil?”The sheer audacity of the question made me laugh.I hated her enough to want her wiped from the face of the earth. How could I love her?I just felt that letting her die would be too easy on her.I shattered whatever hope she still held. “Whatever we had ended the moment Matt came back into your life and the moment Violet died, Eunice.”She looked at me with wounded eyes. “So, you really are upset about Matt and me. There’s honestly nothing between us—”I cut her off impatiently. “I’ll say this one last time. If you want your job back, sign the papers.”Eunice’s lips trembled before she stiffly forced out a word. “Fine.”I smiled in satisfaction. She had no idea that her nightmare was only beginning.Just as Eunice wa

Just as I expected, a few days later, Eunice showed up at my door. She looked disheveled and desperate. The reason was simple. I had ordered the aquarium to fire her.She cried and made a scene, insisting that she was a celebrated hero and could not simply be dismissed.Unfortunately for her, I was the heir to the Fuller fortune and the owner of the aquarium. No matter how much she protested, I refused to reverse the decision. The truth was, she had never been particularly good at her job. She only received such a generous salary because the aquarium manager knew who I was and had approved it as a favor to me.Even the two or three thousand dollars she contributed each month was not enough to cover our household expenses. I had been dipping into my savings to make up the difference.Plus, Eunice had always been a big spender with little to show in savings.Since she also had to look after Matt and Toby, she was struggling to make ends meet.Other aquariums, under my father’s q

I lost control and slapped her. I roared, “Eunice, take a damn look! Do those clothes not seem familiar? Can’t you even recognize your own daughter?”After staying out of it until then, Matt finally stepped forward and placed himself between us.He said indignantly, “Say whatever you need to say, Phil, but don’t you lay your hands on a woman!”He turned to Eunice, clearly expecting her approval. Instead, he found her staring at the television as she collapsed onto the floor. Tears welled up in her vacant eyes. She continued muttering under her breath, “No, that can’t be right. Great white sharks don’t even like human blood.”I gave a derisive laugh. “Then, why did you bite Violet’s finger until it bled?”Eunice faltered. After a long silence, she finally said through her tears, “I… I just wanted her to buy us a little time. I never meant for Violet to die. I didn’t know…”Seeing that she was still trying to argue her way out of it, the rage inside me burned even fiercer.I shov

Many people attended Violet’s funeral, including several nurses from the hospital.Violet had been treated there after the bullying incident, and many of the nurses had grown fond of her. Some strangers had also heard what happened and came of their own accord to offer some flowers. They were heartbroken that Violet’s final moments had been so painful.A sweet little girl like her should never have suffered such a terrible fate. They were right. None of this should have happened. How could Violet ever have imagined that her own mother, whom she loved most, would use her as bait and abandon her to a shark? That was why I did not invite Eunice. She did not deserve to call herself Violet’s mother.Besides, she was too busy taking care of Matt and Toby to spare us even a glance. She probably assumed that I would do what I had always done. She thought I would put Violet and our family first, back down, and apologize to her. This time, she was wrong.Violet was gone.
