Chapter 2

Author: Honeyed Habit
I did not expect Zachary to show up at my door the next day.

He got straight to the point and asked, "You're Sinead's husband, aren't you?"

His face was red, and he looked desperate. Maybe Sinead had confessed something to him after the wedding.

I nodded. "That's right."

He followed me into the house and saw our wedding photo. His eyes were filled with resentment, and his voice grew firmer. "You don't love Sinead as much as I do. Sinead told me you even made her go without food for several nights. I came here to tell you that even if I can't legally marry her, I'm still going to be with her."

He looked like a brave young man defending the love of his life.

I froze slightly. "So, you knew all along?"

He nodded.

I felt sick to the stomach, thinking about how cooperative I had been the day before. If I had known, I would have brought some men with me and ruined the whole wedding. Besides, the only time I had kept Sinead from eating was for her own health. Her doctor had told her to fast before a procedure.

It looked like I was being too kind. Why had I bothered trying to save either of their dignity?

Sinead finally arrived and pulled Zachary behind her, as if she was afraid I would hurt him. "Jesse, I can explain. This isn't what you think. His family helped me once. He came to me for help five years ago, so I looked after him for a while. We only had the wedding because his relatives back home kept pressuring him to get married. We put on a ceremony so they would leave him alone."

I looked up at her. "You got here too late. That isn't what he just said."

Sinead kept shielding Zachary instead. "He does have feelings for me, true, but it's more like sibling affection. He's young and doesn't know any better, so don't throw a tantrum."

That sounded like a warning.

I let out a furious laugh. How could she be so shameless?

The moment I took a step closer, Sinead grabbed my hand hard. She thought I was going after him. "Jesse, I already told you. He's practically a younger brother to me. I can't just ignore him. Stop throwing a tantrum. I made things clear with him last night, too."

My hand hurt so badly I could only shake her off with some effort. She put so much strength into it that my skin was already turning red.

It hurt.

Humiliation and fury churned inside me as I said, "Sinead, I don't care what excuses you have. The two of you have dirtied my home. Get out. Both of you."

Dirty.

Sinead finally realized she had crossed a line. She released her grip, and her tone softened. "I'm sorry. I was just afraid you would..." She trailed off and shook her head. "Forget it. We both need some time to calm down."

She was afraid I would hurt Zachary. Or maybe she was afraid I would cause a scene and expose the truth.

It was all the same.

The only way I could stay calm was by falling back on my usual restraint. This house belonged to me before we got married, and their presence disgusted me. "Get out."

Just as I was trying to make them leave, the small bookcase beside us suddenly tipped over. As the books crashed down, Sinead shoved me aside and pulled Zachary into her arms. Meanwhile, as I was blocked by Sinead, the books hit my arm instead. It swelled red in an instant.

A dull ache spread through my chest.

A person's instincts would never lie.

The spot where Zachary had been standing would not have been hit at all, but Sinead had still acted out of worry.

Concern made people lose their judgment.

Sinead, I've truly had enough of you already.

Sinead carefully checked Zachary over. "Were you scared? I'll take you to the hospital. Didn't you say your head hurt last night?"

She did not spare me another glance. "Jesse, I'm taking Zachary to the hospital first. There's ointment in the medicine cabinet. Put some on your injury yourself."

Soon, I was the only one left in the room.

I called a moving company afterward and said, "I need the whole place cleared out."

This house had once held so many beautiful memories for us.

I never thought we would end up like this.

"What is going on?!" Sinead's mother was the first to run forward. "Sinead, are you alright? Jesse, what are you doing?"I had no choice but to let Margaret leave first. "This is a family matter, and it's a little complicated."She left. Then, I brought Sinead and her parents upstairs. There was no helping it. Some things had to be explained sooner or later. On the way up, Sinead's mother kept complaining. "How could she hit you so hard? And you just stood there and watched, Jesse. Have you forgotten Sinead is your wife?"I was already a little upset. "She has already married someone else with your approval. Have you forgotten that?"Sinead's mother choked on her words and fell silent. After a while, she spoke again. "But that wasn't real. It was only an act. You're the only one taking it seriously."I rolled my eyes. They had all treated those solemn wedding vows as an act, but I couldn't. In fact, I found it filthy. Besides, it had been five years, and they had never told me

Jesse's POVAfter Dad was discharged, the first thing he wanted to do was go to the company and check if everything was going well. The company was his life's work, after all. So, I understood.Thankfully, everything had been saved.I looked at the woman beside me. She was Margaret Sand. We had been bitter rivals before, but this time, I had to rely on her help. I said, "Thank you."Margaret waved it off. "No need. I can't stand Sinead either. Making her suffer makes me feel better, too."I never thought things would end like this. Fate was indeed quite whimsical.Dad checked the company's situation several times. Only after making sure operations were stable and nothing had fallen apart, did he finally relax a little.I was worried. "Dad, you need to rest more. Don't wear yourself out."He said he would, but he still stayed at his desk and refused to leave. Seeing him like that made my heart ache. It was all because of Sinead that my parents had suffered for no reason.Sinead

Zachary's little problem was resolved quickly.Sinead looked at him and felt truly helpless. She had only ever seen him as a younger brother, and that had never changed.A few days later, after making sure Zachary was alright, she finally went to the hospital. She asked a nurse, "Which room is Mr. Peter in?"The nurse told her, "He's been discharged and is no longer here."Sinead nodded. It was good that he had been discharged. She had known it was nothing serious. On her way out, she happened to run into her parents. When they saw her, they sighed repeatedly. "Why are you only here now? Is Zachary alright?"Sinead nodded, still confused. "Mom, Dad, why are you here too? Where did Jesse's parents go? I didn't see Jesse either."Her parents looked puzzled. "What? Weren't they still here yesterday? We knew Zachary was with you, and nothing would happen to him while you were there, so we came to check on Jesse's family. His father only came out of the woods a few days ago."That

Third-person POVSinead left the hospital with Zachary and drove him all the way home. He had been frightened that day. Whenever Zachary was upset, he looked like a scared little animal. Thankfully, he was fine. She assumed Jesse's parents must have said something cruel to him, so she comforted him. "It's alright. Don't worry about what they said. I'll explain everything later. They've paid for what they said, too, alright?"Only then did Zachary smile as he sobbed. "Thank you, Sinead."Sinead smiled. "What are you thanking me for? I promised your parents I'd take good care of you."The two of them went home.Sinead was still shaken about what had happened. "Zachary, no matter what happens in the future, you can never do anything like that again. It was dangerous."Zachary nodded. "I know. I just felt so upset. I thought you'd already explained everything to Jesse that day. I got emotional and took it too personally. I'm sorry."In the end, Sinead still could not bring herself

Sinead still refused to back down. "Jesse, don't push me. Apologize first so Zachary will come down."Sinead's parents kept trying to persuade us too. "That's right. At a time like this, life matters the most. Blame me if you have to, but please. I agreed to this. Zachary only wanted to fulfill a dream. No need to turn things into this?"I was completely disappointed. I never thought Sinead's parents, whom I had respected like my own, would be like this, too.I stood in front of my parents. "I'll agree to the divorce, but I won't apologize. We did nothing wrong."Sinead's brows furrowed even tighter. "Jesse, do you understand what kind of situation this is? Why are you still making a fuss about this?"She picked up her phone and said, "Pause the partnership and pull the funding."That single sentence made it hard for me to stay calm. Even my parents panicked. My parents' company was in the middle of a restructuring, and they needed plenty of funds to keep it running. Sinead had s
