Chapter 3

I took out the first aid kit and treated the injury myself.

I had always been a little clumsy. In the past, Sinead could not stand seeing me get hurt, so she kept the house stocked with every kind of medicine. She would always mutter worriedly, "What would you do without me?"

After I finished treating my arm, it still felt a little sore. I had planned to deal with the divorce first, but then my phone rang. It was my best friend.

He shouted anxiously, "Get over here! Something happened! Your parents heard Sinead cheated, and since they happened to be at the hospital too, they went to ask that man for an explanation! Then, Zachary made a huge scene!"

What?!

I rushed over.

I was afraid my parents would be upset. Sinead was a daughter-in-law they had once thought very highly of. In the past, they had even taken her side whenever we argued.

They must have only wanted the truth. But with Zachary involved, I had no idea what would happen.

I drove over as fast as I could.

When I arrived, Zachary had already run up to the roof with a large crowd gathered outside. He looked like he was about to cry as he said, "If you want me dead, fine! I have nothing else to say!"

Sinead was there too, and she kept trying to comfort him.

My parents were so angry that they could barely speak. "We only asked what happened, then he suddenly ran to the roof and threatened to jump. What were we supposed to do?"

Because of their upbringing, they had not said anything too harsh.

Soon, someone in the crowd recognized Zachary. "Isn't he the groom who gave that touching speech after marrying his wife earlier? I heard his parents died years ago, and he finally found happiness. What happened?"

When Zachary heard that, he looked even more wounded.

Sinead turned and snapped, "Shut up! Nobody says another word!"

She tried to talk Zachary down, saying everything she could to comfort him.

The people around them soon went quiet.

Sinead's parents rushed over as well and kept trying to calm him down. "Zachary, your parents trusted us to look after you. You're like a son to us. You just need to make a clear explanation. Don't throw your life away over this. Besides, this was only supposed to help you fulfill your dream. How did it turn into such a mess?"

My parents stared at them in disbelief. "So, you all knew, too. You helped him do all of this. Have you lost your minds?!"

Sinead's parents looked ashamed, but they still insisted. "A life is at stake right now. Everything else can wait."

No wonder.

Sinead looked at Zachary. "Give me your hand. I'll make them apologize to you."

Then, she looked at my parents. "Please, apologize!"

I finally reached them as my parents looked at Sinead in disbelief. It seemed they had never imagined that the daughter-in-law they had once loved so dearly would speak to them that way, much less demand that they apologize to Zachary when they had done nothing wrong from the beginning.

Even when they asked for the truth, they had chosen their words carefully.

I stepped in front of my parents. "Sinead, do you hear yourself? Who exactly are you asking to apologize to?"

My parents were furious, too.

Sinead sighed, as if she thought I was only being childish. "Someone's life is at stake right now. Do you really have to bring up something else? I know your parents have been very kind to me and helped me a lot, but Zachary is the one standing there over the edge right now. So… Apologize!"

I was so enraged by her shamelessness that I raised my hand and slapped her hard.
