Se connecterThe Words I Couldn’t Hold Back
Emilia
My hands were resting on the sink, as I tried breathe slowly, but my chest felt tight as the night before kept playing in my head. I remembered how my hand had slipped from the steering wheel the day before. For a moment, I thought that I would crash. I heard the doctor’s voice asking, “Are you there?” but I could not answer. I had pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the engine. Then I cried.I had cried for almost an hour inside that car. I cried until my throat hurt and my eyes burned. I cried because I was scared. I cried because I was angry. I cried because I knew my days were numbered.
I stayed there for almost an hour before I gathered myself and drove home slowly.
I told myself that I needed to think clearly. Standing in the bathroom now, I felt that same panic rising again. My life was already hard, and now I had to live with the knowledge that I did not have much time left. Yet all I could think about was Julian. I kept asking myself one question. Could I at least spend my last days feeling loved by him? Even if it was small, even if it was not perfect, I just wanted something real from him. I wanted him to look at me and care. I wanted him to hold me without checking his phone. I wanted him to choose me.
That morning, when the doorbell rang, my heart jumped. I knew what it was so I rushed out of the bedroom before Julian could get to the door. “I’ll get it,” I called quickly.
The delivery man handed me a small package and an envelope. My hands trembled as I signed. I closed the door gently and pressed the items to my chest. These were my test reports and my drugs. I did not want Julian to see them first. I wanted to be the one to tell him. I wanted to look into his eyes when I said it. I wanted to believe that when he heard the truth, he would finally soften toward me.
I went back to the bedroom and locked the door. I opened the envelope slowly. The words were clear. The results confirmed everything the doctor had said. I felt tears fill my eyes again, but I forced myself to stay calm. “It’s okay,” I whispered to myself. “You can do this.” I picked up the drugs and held them tightly. I told myself to have faith. I assured myself that Julian would not ignore this. He would not be cold when he knew I was dying. He would care. He had to care.
At breakfast, I could barely eat. My fork kept hitting the plate because my hands would not stay still. Julian noticed. “Why are you acting strange?” he asked without looking up from his phone.
“I’m not acting strange,” I replied softly.
“You’ve barely touched your food,” he said. “Are you sick?”
I swallowed. This was my chance. “Julian, I need to talk to you.”
Before he could respond, his phone rang. He looked at the screen and quickly answered. “Hello?” His expression changed when he did, and his face became pale. “What? When did this happen?” He stood up immediately. “I’m coming right now.”
He ended the call and grabbed his jacket.
“Wait,” I said quickly, standing up too. My voice shook, but I tried to stay strong. “Please, wait.”
“I don’t have time, Emilia,” he said. “This is urgent.”
“I have something important to tell you,” I said. My heart was beating so fast that I felt dizzy.
“It can wait,” he replied. “Cassandra needs me.”
The moment he said her name, something inside me broke. “Cassandra?” I repeated. “Of course. It’s always Cassandra.”
He frowned. “This is not the time.”
“When is the time, Julian?” I asked loudly. “Tell me. When do you ever have time for me?”
He looked annoyed. “Stop this.”
“No, you stop,” I said, my voice rising. “Do you even care about me a little?”
“I said I don’t have time for this,” he replied.
“You never have time for me,” I said, feeling tears fall down my cheeks. “You only talk to me when you need help with your company. You come to me when you need advice. And then you go behind my back and promote Cassandra.”
His jaw tightened. “Cassandra is your best friend.”
“She was my best friend,” I corrected him.
“You should be happy for her,” he continued. “Why are you acting jealous?”
“I’m not jealous!” I shouted. My chest hurt from yelling. “This isn’t about jealousy.”
“She even asked me to promote you instead,” he said. “She said you deserved it.”
I laughed bitterly. “Then why didn’t you?”
“That decision was mine,” he replied firmly. “And I made the right one.”
“The right one?” I repeated. “So I was never good enough?”
He ran a hand through his hair. “You’re being unreasonable.”
“Unreasonable?” I felt anger take over my fear. “All I ever did was support you. I stayed up with you during meetings. I helped you prepare reports. I believed in you. And you couldn’t even respect me enough to talk to me before giving her that position.”
“I said I have to go,” he replied coldly.
I took a deep breath. My hands were shaking again, but this time it was not just fear. It was hurt. “Julian,” I said quietly, “did you ever love me?”
He paused for a second. His mouth opened like he wanted to say something. But then he closed it. He turned and started walking away.
“Julian!” I called out as my voice broke but he kept going. Desperation filled me. I could not let him leave like this. Not now. “I want a divorce.”
Julian paused at the door with his hand on the knob
Julian’s POVMy mind refused to slow down as I drove to the police station. The detective’s words kept repeating inside my head. For weeks we had been searching for answers.Every clue led to another question and even truth seemed to uncover another lie and now he was finally ready to speak.I tightened my grip on the steering wheel. This was the breakthrough we had all been expecting. But something didn’t feel quite right. Why had he suddenly changed his mind? A man who had fought so hard to protect his secrets, he couldn’t just wake up and decide to confess all of a sudden.Something must have changed his mind and frightened him. I just hoped it wasn’t too late. Emilia’s image flashed through my mind. I could see the tears on his face and the hopelessness in her expression and the way she looked at me right before I left.I had promised her that I would fix things for her and I intended to keep that promise to her.I parked outside the police station and hurried into the house. The
Julian’s POVI had never driven so fast and carelessly in my life before. The moment I saw the news alert on my phone, my heart dropped into my stomach.Every television channel was showing the same clip. Emilia standing behind the podium. Her hands were shaking and her voice broke as she spoke.Seconds later, I watched as she ran away from the room with tears streaming down her face. The clip replayed many times and it felt like a knife was being twisted in my chest. She should never have been put though something like that. She had survived being kidnapped and the weeks of fear and nightmares no one should never even experience. And now the the world wanted her to relieve that moment again just for their satisfaction. It made me sick.Immediately I got to the venue, the security recognized me and let me in instantly.I walked into the building and immediately I sighted her. She was sitting on the floor, her knees pulled tightly against her chest. Her face buried in her hands and her
Emilia’s POV“I don’t think I’m ready for this yet”, I whispered softly as I stared at my reflection in the dressing room mirror. My pr manager stood behind me holding a folder I was supposed to read. Two members of my security team waited outside.Everyone looked extremely nervous and I couldn’t even blame them. This wasn’t just a press conference. I was expected to relieve the worst days of my life in front of a lot of people.“I know today is very difficult for you but the public has been waiting for your statement”, my pr manager said softly.“But I already gave one to the police”, I said, lowering my head. But I knew this one was different, This wasn’t about the investigation anymore but about satisfying public curiosity.A lot of people wanted details and wanted to hear the story from me and unfortunately it had to come from me.“We’ll just keep it short”, my pr manger said as she handed me the statement.I looked down at the page. It was just a few paragraphs with dates. It als
JULIAN'S POV“It's obvious that this man isn't going to tell us anything; let's just let him be and go home for now. By the time he suffers in pay, he will be left with no reason but to call us back,” I said. “I don't think you know that there is a poison in that knife she used in stabbing you. The poison will work slowly, but if you speak now, there would still be time for you to live,” Gifford said. Theodore laughed. “I know you're saying this just to scare me.”“You won't believe it until it's too late,” Gifford responded. “Let's just leave; I don't think I have any space to banter words with him again,” Emilia added. “By the time we realize what is going on, your life would have been miserable, and you would be already wishing for death. There is still lots of time for you to come back, but you are still playing doubles. I just pity how your future would be,” I said and immediately left with Emilia and Gifford. “I will catch up with you guys,” I muttered. I went to the guard
EMILIA'S POV“It's about time you stop all this drama, okay? The more you struggle, the worse your wound becomes. I understand you really need to avoid this, but you are stuck with nowhere, and you aren't going to go off it despite how hard you try. There is no way out. The earlier you know it, the better for you,” Gifford said, referring to Theodore. “You are making things hard for me. How do you expect me to talk in this pain? I'm going through hell now,” Theodore shouted. “Now you are the one pleading for mercy, right? But I was the one begging you several times, but you couldn't even give me a listening ear. Numerous times I pleaded with you, but you ignored me and still continued maltreating me despite all the relationship we shared together,” I told, feeling emotional. “I understand why you were doing all of this to yourself, and I know that you really need your help. Why don't you ask for it, and it should be rendered freely to you?” Gifford said? “Yes, I need help, and the
EMILIA'S POVI watched Julian as he stood up for me, but this wasn't what I wanted. I want to speak for myself and do it my way. That was the perfect way for me to win and gather all the information I needed from him at once. “All of this act you are playing isn't going to help you. Just be reasonable, at least for once in your life; it would be more beneficial to you,” I said politely. “You haven't even told me the content of this call yet to want me to act just the way you want. I know I am a prisoner, but I still have some respect, which should be left for me. Oh, Don, you have to control me the way you want. I am not some kind of slave to you. I still deserve a lot of respect,” Theodore yelled. “You're not but an empty thing. You really didn't know you would end up like this, right?” I smiled. “Not at all. This was going to be inheriting all of your wealth,” Theodore laughed. “What I really want to understand first is how do you feel doing these things to me? I don't know whe
Julian’s POV After the arrest of Emilia, my mind couldn't take her memories off me. My soul was trapped within her; I tried as much as possible to focus, but honestly, it was really difficult to do. I thought endlessly on how she was actually coping with herself trapped inside a cell. Truly she n
JULIAN'S POV For months, I have imagined this moment. How I was going to confess the entire damn thing in my heart to her, how I was going to let her see every remorse, every shame, every pain I had ever felt for foolishly letting her go, how I will forever regret ever doing that. And how my heart
EMILIA'S POV A few seconds of silence passed between us. Or was it minutes? I wasn't even sure. I was too bewildered, too dumbfounded to make sense of anything. I stared at him, not sure how to approach such a situation. He too looked stunned, like I was the last person he was ever expecting to s
JULIAN’S POVEverything happened all at once. The crowd began to scream, Emilia looked up a little too late, and I moved, without even thinking. I lunged toward the stage as the enormous chandelier crashed downward and I shoved Emilia out of the way just before the glass came down on us. The forc
