LOGINAurea’s POV
But before I could process any of it, a loud crash suddenly echoed through the kitchen.
Every head in the dining hall snapped toward the doorway.
"Watch where you’re going!"
A sharp, familiar voice cut through the heavy air.
I walked out to find Rita and Lyra, both staring at each other. Lyra was leaning against the counter, filing her nails with a smug, cat-like grin on her face and Rita’s eyes filled with a dangerous, protective fire as she looked at Lyra.
"Actually, you're exactly the person I was looking for," Rita snapped, her voice trembling with rage. She stepped directly into Lyra’s personal space, ignoring the way Lyra scoffed. "You think you can just lay your filthy fingers on Aurea and get away with it?"
Lyra didn't even blink. She slowly lowered her nail file, a nasty, venomous smile twisting her lips. She looked past Rita, her eyes locking onto me where I stood frozen in the corner.
"Oh, you mean that little charity case?" Lyra purred, her voice dripping with malice. "Oh Please. This pathetic little slut. She walks around here acting like an innocent princess, but she’s nothing but a trash who doesn't know her place. If she gets a little bruised up, it’s because she needs to learn who runs this house."
"Shut your mouth, Lyra!" Rita snarled, stepping closer.
"Why should I?" Lyra sneered, tossing her hair over her shoulder. "She’s completely useless, a stupid dirty whore.
Crack.
The sound echoed like a gunshot in the kitchen.
Before Lyra could utter another vile word, Rita’s hand swung across the space between them, delivering a brutal, open-handed slap directly across Lyra’s left cheek. The force of it snapped Lyra's head to the side, her perfect curls flying wildly on her face.
Silence descended on the kitchen. The other staff members in the background completely froze.
Lyra staggered back a step, her hand flying to her face. Her cheek was already flushing a bright, angry crimson. For a split second, pure shock blanked out her arrogant expression.
"Keep her name out of your mouth you bitch," Rita hissed, her voice deadly quiet as she pointed a finger right in Lyra’s face. "Aurea is a personal maid to the masters. She belongs upstairs, under their direct care. You are nothing. I swear to God, if you touch her again, we are going straight to the masters, and they will throw you out of this estate so fast your head will spin."
Slowly, the shock on Lyra’s face melted away, replaced by a dark, chillingly confident amusement. She lowered her hand from her burning cheek, dabbing at the corner of her lip, and let out a sharp, mocking laugh.
She didn't look threatened at all. She just brushed an imaginary dirt off her uniform, looking at Rita—and then at me—with absolute disdain.
"Go to the masters?" Lyra laughed, her voice echoing off the stainless steel appliances. "Oh, please, go ahead. Run to them. Tell them whatever you want."
She stepped forward, her eyes gleaming with a delusional, wicked pride. She leaned in close to Rita, making sure her whisper carried across the room.
"You think they care about a couple of tears from a pathetic little maid? You two have no idea what happens behind closed doors when the masters come around," Lyra whispered, a smug, filthy smirk returning to her face. "They like what I do for them when the lights go down. Do you really think they’d choose a fragile little whore over me? Try it. See who ends up on the street."
With a final, dismissive roll of her eyes, Lyra turned on her heel and strutted out of the kitchen, leaving the heavy swing doors rocking in her wake.
Rita turned back to me immediately, her anger melting into deep concern as she rushed over. But I couldn't move. My heart was pounding against my ribs. I knew how ruthless our masters could be, and Lyra's words sent a sickening wave of dread pooling straight into my stomach.
“Don’t mind that stupid bit*h,” Rita said and looked around her. “Don’t you guys have work to do?” As soon as she said that everyone dispersed whispering around them.
“You told me you won’t go after her,” I said, moving towards her.
“but I said I will still confront her” she smirked looking at her palm.
Lyra suddenly paused at the doorway, she turned her head.
Her eyes locked on mine.
"Enjoy your victory while it lasts, Aurea."
A smile spread across her lips.
I went back to work after Rita and I parted ways. I walked over to the supply closet, gathered the cleaning tools and fresh linens I needed, and headed straight up to the master's wing. I pushed open the first heavy door, entering the space that belonged to Valerius.
I walked into the bedroom, and a familiar chill ran down my spin, the room was dimly lit, and the air felt incredibly heavy and thick with their cologne—almost as if they were standing right there in the room with me. Shivering, I forced myself to work quickly, finishing his room before moving across the hall to Vincenzo's quarters.
Since they are not in the estate, I didn't bother to knock. I pushed the door open and stepped inside. The layout was a mirror image of the other room, dark and imposing.
I set my cleaning caddy down on the floor and walked over to the massive bed, reaching down to smooth out the silken sheets. But I froze dead in my tracks.
The hairs on the back of my neck stood completely on end. A sudden, terrifying wave of hot air brushed against the sensitive skin of my neck, accompanied by the distinct, heavy scent of expensive cologne and cedarwood.
Before I could even scream, the heavy bedroom door behind me slammed shut, and the lock clicked into place.

Aurea’s POV I spun around instantly, sprinting straight for the heavy door without daring to cast a single glance behind me. I bolted out of their private wing and flew down the corridors until I reached the safety of my bedroom. Slamming the door shut, I slid down the wood and buried my face between my knees, sobbing uncontrollably. After a few minutes, I forced myself to my feet and walked into the washroom to clean my face. The girl in the mirror looked unrecognizable. My eyes were violently bloodshot, and my lips were swollen, bruised, and sporting a fresh, stinging cut at the corner of the lower lip.How did I get myself into this? I whispered to myself, pulling frantically at my hair. I’ve never hurt a soul in my life, so why is this happening to me? How do I even escape them? The police, who are supposed to protect citizens from people like them, are entirely terrified of their name. How am I going to survive this?I splashed freezing water over my face, carefully rewrapped th
Aurea’s POVWho on earth are these men... that even the law is too terrified to cross them?If even the police couldn't save me...Then who could?"Brother, do you think we should tell our princess who we actually are?" Velarius murmured, staring down at me with a mocking pout on his handsome lips."Naa, I think our princess should have the pleasure of finding out all by herself," Vincenzo replied smoothly, the two of them carrying on as if they were just having a casual conversation over coffee."Now... call Nina," Velarius commanded, sliding my old phone into my trembling hand.My eyes went wide. How on earth had they gotten ahold of my phone? I stared at them, frantically shaking my head to let them know I wouldn't do it. "You better call her right now," Vincenzo growled. This time, every ounce of playfulness vanished from his voice. His eyes turned entirely black, a suffocating darkness settling over his features as I gasped for air. "You don’t know us, princess. We could do anyt
Aurea’s POV “Don’t you think we need to punish you, hmm, princess?" Velarius murmured, his large, heavy hand resting on my waist and possessively kneading the flesh there. Before I could answer, Vincenzo's hand slid beneath my chin and forced my gaze upward."Tell us the truth," he said softly."I-I fell dow—""Think before you speak," Vincenzo cut in."I-it's sister Lyra," I said softly,I doubted they even heard me. There was no response from them. They looked far too calm for my liking. It felt like the calm before the storm."Brother, don’t you think our princess is hilarious for thinking she can actually escape from us?" Velarius asked, a wicked, knowing smirk plastered across his lips. The words hit me like a physical blow. Absolute horror flooded my chest. They know? That can’t be true.A soft, dangerous chuckle echoed from right behind me. Velarius' strong arms wrapped securely around my waist, lifting me effortlessly off Vincenzo's lap only to deposit me directly onto his."
Aurea’s POV It was almost five, and I had already packed my things, waiting patiently for my ride. I couldn't believe I would finally be away from them, I thought with a smile. My eyes darted to my phone. 4:02 PM. A few more minutes to go.I paced the length of my bedroom, sucking my lower lip. Five steps to the window. Turn. Five steps back to the bed. My hands twisted nervously in the fabric of my skirt, my breath catching in my throat with every swing of the pendulum. Knock. Knock.I froze mid-stride, one foot hovering slightly off the ground. The sound wasn't loud, but in the suffocating silence of my room, it hit me like a physical blow. "Aurea?" I quickly went to the door. It was one of the younger maids.I swallowed hard, forcing my voice to sound steadier than I felt. "Yes? What is it?""The masters are calling for you in their study room, they requested your presence immediately."I suddenly froze in place, the masters.Panic flared through my veins. My hands began to trem
Aurea’s POV “Rea! Rea! I just heard the ne—“Rita burst into the room looking worried as ever. “What happened?” She reached out gently to face. "Honestly, this isn't good. The Rossi brothers are the most feared men in this country. They won't hesitate for a second to ruin anyone who crosses them."A huge, suffocating knot formed in my throat. “But everything is gonna be okay, you just have to stay away from their way.”I was completely lost in my own thoughts as Rita kept rambling on, mentioning how jealous the other maids were. "But don't worry, girl," she added with a giggle. "Jade told me to tell you tomorrow, you'll be among the maids serving the Masters their breakfast so you can learn the routine. And honestly? They are so handsome you would literally die to give your life to them..."Rita kept on for about half a minute before finally leaving my room. I sighed in relief while smiling a bit and placed my head on my bed. It didn’t take a second when the door clicked open. Lyra,
