Chapter 1

Author: Ace Athlete
"Have you had enough, Ariel Shaw? You want to divorce me for 470,000 dollars?"

"That's the money for buying a school district home." I looked at Jeremy Yeager.

"Money sitting in a bank account is just dead money. I've looked into Celia's project, and the return rate is very high."

"The return rate is very high?" I pointed at the transfer record on the phone screen. "So, you didn't even consult me before taking our joint asset."

"I told you. It's an investment. Celia just came back, and she doesn't have the right connections or funds. As the brother she grew up with, what's wrong with helping her out?"

"Brother? What about my father?" I looked into his eyes, asking, "Three years ago, my father lacked 60,000 dollars for a gastric cancer surgery. I begged you on my knees. What did you say then?"

Jeremy's eyes darkened for a moment. "How long are you going to keep dwelling on this? I explained to you back then that your family's situation is like an endless pit. If I give you 60,000 dollars today, will you need 600,000 dollars when it recurs tomorrow? I'm a married man. I have to take care of my own family. I can't let your family keep draining our money."

He spoke confidently.

"What if Celia's business venture fails?"

"She won't fail. Even if it does, I can afford the 470,000-dollar loss. Consider it a fee for her to learn a lesson."

I suddenly felt sick. He called the life-saving 60,000 dollars draining him dry but called the 470,000 dollars for starting a business a lesson fee. In his eyes, my father's life was worth less than Celia's game.

"Jeremy." I pushed the divorce papers forward a little. "I'm not making a fuss. Sign them."

He finally stopped writing and looked up at me. "Ariel, do you have to be so unreasonable? You know Celia is like a younger sister to me."

Just then, his phone on the table lit up. Celia's name flashed on the screen.

Jeremy glanced at me and answered the phone. "What's up?" His voice softened.

"Jeremy, I received the money. Don't worry. I won't let you down."

"Okay, do a good job."

"But won't Ariel be angry? Should I call her and explain?"

"Don't worry about her. She's just being a little temperamental. She'll be fine in a couple of days."

"Then you should cheer Ariel up, or I'll feel bad."

"Got it. Get some rest."

He hung up and placed his phone face down on the table. "Did you hear that? Celia was worried you were angry, so she called to ask me."

Jeremy sighed, adopting a tolerant attitude. "Can't you be more considerate like her?"

I looked at him and suddenly felt like a complete joke.

I had been pinching pennies for this family, even checking the bill before buying a coffee. Meanwhile, he handed someone else 470,000 dollars without a second thought.

"She's very considerate. That's why you two are a good match." I turned and walked out of the study.

"Where are you going?" Jeremy called after me.

"It's getting late. I'm going back to the guest room to sleep."

"Ariel, if you walk out that door today, don't expect me to come and coax you tomorrow."

"No need to coax me." I pushed open the door and walked out.

Six months later, in the mediation room of the family court, I was dressed in a neat and professional suit while sitting on one side of the long table.Jeremy sat opposite me. He looked even more haggard than he did six months ago, with sunken eye sockets and a lifeless, decaying aura.Celia's mess had cost him a large sum of money, and the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. The former marital home had been vacant due to disputes over property division."The final property division mediation document is here, Mr. Yeager." The judge pushed the document in front of him. "Given that Mr. Yeager has committed the fault of transferring your joint property, Ms. Shaw has given up her share of the disputed property and legally asked for the full 470,000-dollar principal and her portion of the savings. Please sign it after confirming it."Jeremy did not look at the document. He kept staring at me intently. "Are you that eager to cut ties with me?"His voice was hoarse."Yes," I replie

The notice of asset preservation completely drove Jeremy to despair. His company had several important investment projects indefinitely postponed due to this dispute. His partners were extremely dissatisfied with him and even demanded that he withdraw his shares. After shifting the blame, Celia flew abroad overnight, leaving him behind a mess to clean up.Jeremy dealt with debts and lawsuits every day, losing a lot of weight.Meanwhile, through Aiden's introduction, I joined the medical charity foundation. I was in charge of the financial coordination of the patient family aid program. Every day, I dealt with all kinds of medical records and bills.I saw families who cried desperately at the payment counter like me. I used the resources of the foundation to connect them with doctors and apply for subsidies. I turned the agony of selling my dowry into the ability to help others. My father's condition also miraculously stabilized under the new treatment plan.Life seemed to finall

Jeremy did not sign the papers. Not only did he not sign them, but he also tried everything he could to make up for his mistakes. He transferred 300,000 dollars to my father's account, hired the best caregivers, and even tried to use his connections to have my father transferred to a VIP ward. However, I returned the money to him in full and dismissed the caregivers.I only communicated with him through my lawyer."Ms. Shaw's attitude is very clear," the lawyer said as he sat in Jeremy's office and pushed the proof of refund in front of him. "She doesn't accept any private settlement and demands a legal division of your joint property, including the 470,000 dollars."Jeremy looked at the proof of refund, his eyes bloodshot. "I refuse to divorce. She can request anything—the house, the car, and the shares in my name. She can have all of them.""Sorry, Mr. Yeager. Ms. Shaw said she only wants her half. No more, no less." The lawyer closed his file and stood up. "If you refuse to sig

The next morning, I met Jeremy at the hospital entrance. He had severe dark eye circles and stubble on his chin. The usually neatly pressed suit he wore now looked rather disheveled. He stopped me in my path, holding a bank card in his hand. "Ariel, I have the 470,000 dollars."He handed the card to me, his tone filled with a pleading eagerness. "Since the money with Celia can't be recovered immediately, I liquidated all the investments and shares in my name. I'll cover the rest of your father's treatment costs as well. Don't be mad at me anymore, okay?"I looked at the card but did not accept it. "Jeremy, do you think that everything will be forgotten by just making up the money?"I looked up at his face. "Three years ago, I begged you to lend me 60,000 dollars. You said we help in emergencies, but we don't support endlessly. You said my family will drain our bank account. I sold my dowry and gathered the money myself."I took a deep breath, my voice calm. "Yesterday, my father w

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line.Celia's voice became somewhat hesitant with a hint of panic. "Jeremy, why do you suddenly need the money? I already sent the money to the equipment supplier and signed the contract."Jeremy frowned. "You just got the money yesterday, and you already spent it all?""Yeah, they pressured me."Celia's tone became aggrieved. "Jeremy, didn't you say that you didn't need this money anytime soon and to consider it a fee for me to learn a lesson? The project has just started. Where can I find 470,000 dollars for you?"Jeremy's fingers on the phone turned white from gripping. For the first time, he felt that Celia's sense of entitlement was so irritating. He suppressed his anger, and his tone was unyielding. "Check the accounts and get as much refunded as possible. I need it urgently."After saying that, he hung up.Jeremy leaned against the hospital corridor wall, opened his banking app, and checked the transaction history of t

Jeremy held the ticket tightly, his expression looking terrifyingly gloomy. He immediately picked up his phone and dialed my number again."Sorry, the number you dialed is not available. "He irritably tore off his tie and turned to leave."Jeremy, where are you going?" Celia followed him to the door."To the hospital." Jeremy strode into the elevator without looking back.Half an hour later, his car stopped in the underground garage of City Cancer Hospital. He hurried to the inpatient department and went to the ordinary ward where my father had stayed before. However, he pushed the door open to find a stranger lying inside."Nurse, where is Jacob Shaw, who used to be in this bed?" He grabbed the passing nurse. The nurse glanced at him and gave him a strange look. "Are you a family member?""I'm his son-in-law.""Son-in-law?" The nurse scoffed. "Why weren't you here when he was in critical condition and needed emergency treatment last night?"Jeremy was stunned. "Critical co
