Penulis: Cabbage

Chapter 1

Penulis: Cabbage
"The groom's family was really rich. They booked over 500 tables right from the start, and that still wasn't enough. They were even adding more tables."

"Exactly. The feast cost three thousand dollars per table, and the seafood was unlimited."

"Just a moment ago, the groom ordered over 30 thousand dollars worth of fresh flower petals to make the bride happy, having them scattered into the air. That's literally throwing money around. Not everyone could live like that."

Several servers gossiped animatedly nearby, but my blood ran cold as I stared blankly at the photos of the couple scrolling across the LED screen ahead. Wasn't that groom my son, Brandon Harrell?

Brandon was getting married, yet I, his own mom, had no idea at all.

Seeing me stand there in a daze without speaking, Beatrice Ford nudged my arm from beside me and frowned. "Why are you zoning out? Hurry up and wash the dishes. We won't have enough once the banquet starts. Get moving, or they'll dock your pay."

She sighed. "You're already retired at your age. Why don't you stay home and enjoy your monthly pension instead of coming out to do this exhausting, filthy work?"

"If you ask me, children should make their own way in life. You shouldn't spoil your son so much. If he wants a house and a car, he should earn the money himself. He shouldn't make you work so hard at your age."

Another coworker chimed in, "That's right, Nancy. When you first came here, anyone could tell from your hands that you'd done respectable work before. Look at them now. After washing dishes for two years, they're covered in chilblains. You've really suffered."

With my hands soaked in water every single day, chilblains inevitably formed and festered. They would heal, only to split open again after being soaked in water, repeating the same cycle over and over.

I forced myself back to my senses, my face pale as I managed a smile, but I couldn't bring myself to wash another dish from the towering pile before me.

I quietly headed toward the hall at the front, wanting to get closer for a clearer look. Maybe it was just someone who looked like Brandon. There was no way it could be him.

My phone's chat screen still showed the transfer record for the money I had sent Brandon this morning.

Brandon had written, "Mom, I'm treating an important friend to dinner today. Transfer me 30 thousand dollars. Also, stay at the staff dorm tonight and don't come home. I'm inviting my friend to stay over."

Brandon did have a girlfriend, but he had never mentioned getting married. If he were really getting married, how could he possibly keep it from me?

I searched around the banquet hall but didn't spot the groom anywhere. In the end, I walked to a quiet corner, took out my phone, and called Brandon. The line had barely rung before he hung up.

I had no choice but to call again, only for him to hang up on me once more. After I stubbornly placed the fifth call, he finally answered.

Before I could feel relieved, Brandon's impatient growl came through the phone, "Mom, you're so fucking annoying with these constant calls. If you've got something to say, make it quick. I'm busy!"

I gripped my phone tightly, unable to stop myself from asking, "Brandon, where are you? Are you done eating with your friend?

"Beatrice, who works with me, passed by a hotel today and saw a display sign featuring a groom who looks exactly like you. She even asked me if you were getting married. I told her there was no way it could be you."

Renee said, "Didn't you ask why I ended our partnership? It's because Ms. Harrell is my godmother. Now you know why, don't you? You upset my mom, so I'm not interested in working with you anymore."Her words instantly left all four of them staring at me in shock.Brandon had the strongest reaction. He rushed over and grabbed my hand, his eyes red. "Mom, how could you go this far? You actually held a grudge and deliberately drove Ms. Griffin's company into bankruptcy."Do you know if the company goes bankrupt, even if we sell everything we own, we still won't be able to pay the penalty? Are you really going to stand by and watch Dad and me end up homeless?"He gripped my hand so hard that it started to hurt. Keeping a cold expression, I yanked my hand free without mercy and slapped him across the face. A sharp smack echoed through the air.I said, "Don't call me 'Mom.' From now on, we're strangers to each other. Whether you die or end up crippled, I won't even blink an eye."Renee

Without any hesitation, Renee called out clearly, "Mom."Her father had passed away when she was very young, and her mother had run away with another man, so she grew up living with her grandmother in the village. Her eyes turned red as she picked up the food she had bought and handed it to me. "Mom, in my heart, you've always been my real mom. I wouldn't be where I am today without your help."Afterward, we decided to stop supplying raw materials to Emma's company and end our partnership with it."Let's wait a little longer. We'll take action after Jeremy and I receive our divorce certificate in a month," I said.I knew Jeremy's true nature too well. If he lost everything now, he would definitely regret divorcing me.…Time passed slowly. Almost as soon as the month was up, Brandon called early in the morning to rush me. "Mom, I'm parked outside your building. Hurry down and go pick up the divorce certificate with Dad. Get there early so you can be first in line."The process

"That's right. There's not much time left. Ms. Griffin, this is your first wedding, so we can't let you settle for anything less. We have to prepare properly," Angela said.Emma looked self-conscious and gave Jeremy a playful glare. "We're not young anymore. We might even become grandparents soon. People will laugh if we still throw a wedding."Angela linked arms with Emma affectionately. "Ms. Griffin, you've waited for Dad for decades. This is your first wedding, so we can't cut corners. Leave all the planning to Brandon and me."Not wanting to keep watching this jarring scene of their happy family, I turned and walked away.Jeremy's voice came from behind me, "Nancy, I've already hired a moving company to help you pack your things and move out of the house shortly. Brandon is staying with me, and raising him costs plenty, so don't fight me over the house."I didn't slow my steps for even a moment and kept walking away. But halfway down the road, my vision suddenly went dark, and

In the end, I resigned from my job with Mr. Finch. I really couldn't keep doing that job anymore. My pension had always been enough for me to live comfortably for the rest of my life. If it hadn't been for Brandon, I never would have put myself through all of this. Now, I no longer needed to do it at all.Just as I finished packing my things and headed out, a man called out from behind me in an anxious voice, "Ms. Harrell, wait a second!"Ted Jones ran over, out of breath. Despite standing at nearly six feet tall, he looked embarrassed and awkward when he saw me.He scratched his head, then apologized to me solemnly, saying, "Ms. Harrell, I'm so sorry. I didn't know you were Brandon's real mom. I'm truly sorry for how rude I was to you. Brandon is an ungrateful jerk. I've already cut ties with him."I hadn't expected him to come and apologize to me. My broken heart finally felt a little warmth once more.I smiled at him. "It's okay. I don't blame you. Just don't be so impulsive n

Mr. Finch smiled warmly. "Mr. Harrell, your mom, Ms. Harrell, came to me just now and asked us to play these. We simply thought it would create a meaningful family moment at the wedding."Many couples show meaningful photos and videos during their weddings. We didn't do anything inappropriate."The guests immediately burst into an uproar after hearing his explanation."The woman on the marriage certificate looks younger, but isn't that the cleaner who was dragged out earlier? She really is the groom's biological mom.""Then, who's the woman on stage who claimed she was the groom's mom? Look at how close she is with the groom and his dad. They look like a real family. I can't believe she's the mistress.""I really didn't expect Brandon to be this kind of person. He actually called his dad's mistress his mom and even had security throw out his real mom. How could anyone do that?"The friend who had been the first to defend Brandon and throw bread at me earlier slammed his hand on t

"Don't worry. I won't put you in a difficult position. I'll send you a photo of my son's birth certificate in a moment. Today's groom really is my biological son," I said.I had worked as a cleaner at this hotel for more than two years. One time, Mr. Finch suddenly suffered a heart attack and collapsed. I found him in time, called emergency services, and performed first aid to save him. He had been grateful to me ever since. In the end, Mr. Finch agreed to help me out. I immediately sent him my marriage certificate, Brandon's birth certificate, and several family photos. After I left, the wedding carried on as if nothing had happened. At that moment, Brandon and Angela sat at the head table, taking champagne glasses from a staff member nearby to offer a toast to their parents.Angela raised her glass high, her eyes brimming with tears. "Dad, Mom, thank you for working so hard to raise Brandon all these years. You've both sacrificed so much, especially you, Mom. Thank you for rais
