Feeling optimistic

Two pairs of feet are pitter pattering along my hallway. My thoughts are all over the place, thinking back of me and my husbands history, our trips across the world all the places in this house where we went down on each other, yet I am still managing to start a bath. I lean down and stir the water here and there, thinking about his touch, his caresses whilst opening and closing the left and right faucets, waiting for it to be just the right temperature.

My daughter comes crashing into me, trying to take cover from her little brother’s terrorism. Frustrated, he tries to wedge himself between us to get her loose. We all tumble down and start laughing. Suddenly he realises he must be a bit more careful with me.

“Mom, are you okay? Did I hurt the baby?”

Seven months along, I wobble back to my feet. “No worries, Timothy. We are just fine.”

Jocelyn makes a break for it and darts to her room, but long gone are the days when she can outrun her brother. I take a deep breath and salvage the rare quiet moment. My thoughts wander again to a distant memory. Just nine years ago, things were very different. I look around the bathroom, remembering where it all began, how far we have come.

Now the world is my oyster. I never knew that I would have to start over at just 28.

I find myself smiling, instantly feeling foolish. I actually have so little, yet so much to be grateful for. No one would blame me for feeling a bit sorry for myself considering the circumstances.

The two kids rush back. The water is just right, and I challenge them to a game of rock, paper, scissors. It is always a fight when it comes to who bathes first, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve.

Jocelyn wins.

Timothy lets out a moan. “How does she always win?”

I give Jocelyn a questioning look.

“What? He makes it too easy. I know his sequence. He does it all the time.”

Timothy is already up in arms. “No, I do not. But I want to toss a coin next time. Then it is not up to us, it is up to fate.”

Fate. That is a word I have not thought about in a long time. I hate the idea of a set predestined path. The thought irritates me and I push it back.

I ruffle Timothy’s dark strands and pull him toward the kitchen. “Okay, next time we will toss a coin. Put some music on. You can choose what is for lunch tomorrow and help me pack it.”

My boy is a foodie. I can see the delight in his eyes. I am pleased with the thought that both my children have a love for the finer things in life. We all need to. How else will we get by if we do not have little novelties to spark some joy.

We dance away and Timothy starts spreading ingredients across the kitchen counter while spinning circles around me. For an eight year old boy, he has some moves. It seems we will be making our famous jaw breaker sandwich, pulling out all the stops. Cold meat, sauces, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, gherkins and a fried egg. Before you know it, you have a jaw breaker.

Timothy and I get busy, and I decide to check on Jocelyn.

“Hey sweetie, how far are you?”

I hear the water swishing. “Ah Mom, I will be done in a sec. Can I just add some more hot water and get a little more time?”

I glance at Timothy, who has decided to take it upon himself to fry the egg.

“Sure honey. Tim and I are just about to start building the sandwiches. What sauce do you want on it?”

After a long pause, “Mom, is it fine if I skip most of it and just have some of the leftover chicken for a chicken mayo?”

To be honest, that is not a bad idea and would have made tonight much simpler.

“No worries babe. We will make it for you.”

As I approach the kitchen, I see a look on Tim’s face that breaks my heart. I do not need to ask why.

He misses his father, we all do.

“You okay bud?”

I see him concentrate and put on a brave face. “Yeah Mom. No problems here.”

  • Not bound by honey   Not even a inch

Devins POVI stood there staring at the envelope longer than I probably should have. All it had was a room number and a blindfold. That was it there was no instructions or explanation.Around me, the club continued moving like nothing unusual had happened. Soft jazz drifted through the room while people laughed quietly over drinks. Somewhere below, dancers moved slowly beneath golden lighting, pearls and beads catching against bare skin every time they turned. Rhinestones gleaming and catching the light.Nobody looked rushed or uncertain here.Meanwhile I felt like I had accidentally wandered into the world’s most expensive psychological experiment.I looked back toward the staircase then down at the blindfold again. There was no sign of Alison, what would she be doing here?I rubbed a hand over my jaw before finally heading upstairs. The hallway above was quieter. Softer somehow. Low lighting stretched across dark walls while numbered doors lined the corridor. Some opened briefly wit

  • Not bound by honey   Go through with it

The following weeks went by fast. Ally stayed in the hospital for two more days after she woke up. Mary insisted she stay with her afterward too, doting over her for what felt like forever. We never really crossed paths after that. I suspected it was because she was trying to avoid staff gossip. Our family had forbidden anyone from talking about the situation in front of the Jackson staff, but there was no way people were not whispering about it anyway. Especially the students. The women around campus definitely treated me differently afterward. Some looked at me like I was some kind of axe murderer. Others acted like I was some sort of sex god. And I was a little obsessed with seeing Alison again. Just to make sure she was okay. I could not imagine becoming the center of gossip like that. If people were talking this much around me, what the hell was she dealing with? I was finding fewer and fewer reasons to keep visiting my brother by the day. Until one afternoon, I spotted her.

Devins POVAs I started walking away, I heard Mary’s voice behind me, sharp enough to cut through the hallway.“Were you seriously flirting with him after what he did to you?”Alison let out an actual laugh, like the question amused her more than offended her.“Mary, if he did to you what we did, you would be flirting with him too.”Mary scoffed loudly. “What? Send me to a hospital?”“I had a cyst,” Alison replied, her tone calmer now. “Why are you acting like he stabbed me? That could have happened any other way. Honestly, it kind of explains a lot.”“Don’t change the subject,” Mary snapped.“You know,” Alison continued casually, “most people would offer someone in my position a glass of water before interrogating them.”“Yes, but most people in your position would not be flirting with the man involved.”Alison laughed again, softer this time. “He seems like the type that needs a challenge. Maybe I do too.”“You have always been trouble,” Mary said immediately. “And you always will b

  • Not bound by honey   Bye ladies

Devin’s POVI stayed by her hospital room for three straight days and barely left her side.Which, honestly, made me feel like the world’s biggest simp.I barely knew this woman. One night in the woods and suddenly I was sleeping in uncomfortable hospital chairs, surviving off vending machine coffee, and timing my bathroom breaks around nurse check-ins.It was ridiculous. But something in me needed her to wake up and know she had not been abandoned. That I had not just left her there after everything that happened.People came and went constantly.Even Jackson and my mother stopped by once together. But the person I hated seeing most was Mary.Goodness, I hated when Mary showed up.She always walked into the room like she owned the place, immediately scanning for me like I was an infection she needed to clear out.Yesterday she came in, tapped me once on the shoulder, and pointed toward the door.“Out.”I stared at her. “Excuse me?”“You knew her for two hours,” she said bluntly. “Sto

  • Not bound by honey   Be there

Jocelyn’s POVI didn’t sleep that night.None of us really did.The hospital had that strange kind of silence after midnight where everything felt suspended, like the world outside didn’t exist anymore. The kind of silence that makes every sound matter too much, the distant footsteps in the hallway, the soft beeping from monitors behind closed doors, the occasional announcement over the intercom.Jackson left briefly to take calls from the estate, then came back looking even more drained than before.Mary stayed in a chair outside Allison’s room, curled up with a blanket a nurse had given her but not really using it. She kept wiping her face like she didn’t want anyone to notice she was still crying.I sat beside her for a while, but eventually I couldn’t stay still anymore.I went to the window at the end of the hallway instead.Outside, the storm had eased, but the sky was still heavy with clouds, the city lights reflecting off wet concrete far below. It felt unreal that normal life

  • Not bound by honey   Just made it

Jocelyn’s POVThe moment the helicopter touched down, everything outside it turned into movement and noise.Floodlights cut through the rain. Hospital staff were already waiting on the roof with a stretcher, and as soon as the doors opened, cold air hit us hard.Allison was taken first.“Severe blood loss,” one of the medics called out as they lifted her out. “Blood pressure unstable, possible internal hemorrhage.”Devin was right behind them before anyone could stop him.A nurse stepped into his path. “Sir, you need to stay back—”“I’m not leaving her,” he said, not even looking at her properly, already walking. For a second there was hesitation, like no one wanted to escalate it in the middle of an emergency. Then Allison made a faint sound, barely more than a breath, and that was enough to break him completely. He reached for her hand and kept walking beside the stretcher anyway, refusing to let go even when they pushed through the hospital doors. And then she was gone into surgery

Rachel’s POVAfter days of worrying and searching, we finally got news. A man came to the woods and told us that Jackson’s whole family, as well as Jocelyn, was safe but with the O’Neils. It all came crashing in. The woods had been found out already, so no one was safe as long as we were still ther

Jocelyn’s POVJackson flinched as he tried to sit up.“I’m telling you this once, old man. I refuse to go into a life of crime.”Mr O’Neil looked at him steadily. “You don’t really know me. You don’t know what I’ve built or how I built it. All you know is what happened between my sons and their chi

Jocelyn’s POVIt was all new. My whole body felt it but it wasn’t the same fire-some feeling I felt with Jackson. The thought stung through me and I drew back.He let out a breath, running a hand through his hair. “This would not have happened if we were not stuck here like this. I can feel you are

Jocelyn’s POV Jackson was still a coma it has almost been two weeks. Each one of us took turns to be by him. Even the doctors. Sometimes we were all there together.
