The message below it read something that made my blood run cold.

“What the fuck?” I whispered under my breath, staring at the screen in disbelief.

My heart slammed against my ribs the second I saw the video file and message. I didn’t think. I grabbed it immediately, even before Mark noticed and shoved it deep into my bag before she came back.

Mom walked back from the kitchen right then, two cups of tea steaming in her hands. She set one down in front of me with a warm smile.

“Here, extra honey the way you like it,” she said, sitting across from me. “Mark, are you sure you don’t want one?”

“I’m good,” he replied, leaning back.

I wrapped my fingers around the cup, forcing a nod and a smile. The tea burned my tongue but I kept sipping. That phone in my bag felt like a bomb. What does that blackmailer want? Should I not have ignored him? This is getting far. My mind spun while Mom chatted about her day. I barely heard her.

A couple minutes later she put her cup down and started patting her pockets and searching the couch. “Where’s my phone? I need to check those store hours.”

She looked on the table, under magazines, behind the lamp. My face burned hot. Sweat prickled on my neck. I stayed still, cup to my lips, pretending everything was fine.

“Can’t find it anywhere,” Mom muttered. She dropped to her knees and checked under the couch. “Evie, you see it?”

I swallowed hard. Part of me wanted to hand it over and get it over with. The other part screamed to keep it hidden. Heat flooded my cheeks. I didn’t move. I couldn't reply her.

“Mark, call my number quick,” Mom said, standing up and brushing her knees.

Mark pulled out his phone. “On it.”

My stomach dropped. Any second now it would ring from my bag. I had to act. While Mom glanced toward another corner searching for it, I shrugged, reached down, and slipped the phone out.

“Oh, here it is,” I said, holding it up. “I must have sat on it earlier. Sorry about that.”

Mom turned, relief all over her face. “Thank goodness.”

I handed it to her, but I didn’t let go completely. “Wait, Mum. Let me show you something first.” I pretended I wanted to show her a website. As soon as she unlocked the phone, I pulled it slightly toward me and swiped quickly to the messages.

There it was. The video. It showed me and Mark entering the hotel that night. My stomach twisted. Everything Mum had been saying about moving back home suddenly felt far away. My mind was somewhere else, imagining what would happen if she had opened that video. How hurt she would be. How everything would break.

I deleted the video immediately, my fingers moving fast. I cleared the notification. Blocked the number. Then I opened the browser and searched for a bag and scarf combo at Lumina Enterprise.

“See this one?” I turned the screen back to her, voice steady.

Mom leaned in, smiling wide. “Oh Evie, that’s nice. The colors are perfect. We should go pick it up together soon. This Sunday maybe?”

“Yeah,” I said. “Sounds good.”

We talked about it for a minute, her pointing out details, me nodding along. The relief hit me hard, but I kept my face calm. Inside, my mind still raced, another message with another number shouldn't pop up right now please. I was pleading in my thoughts.

Later I brought up the moving-over thing. “About spending more nights here, Mom… I’ll think about it. If it makes you happy again, I won’t say no right away.”

She squeezed my hand. “It would mean everything, honey. I just want us to live together as a family once again.”

Mark nodded from the couch. “Family time matters.”

I stood up, grabbing my bag. “I should head out. It’s getting late.”

Mark got up immediately too. “Stay for the night, Evie. Roads are dark. We’ve got the your room ready.”

Mom jumped in. “Yes, please. I’ll make pancakes in the morning. Don’t rush off.”

I paused, caught between them. Their hopeful looks pulled at me. I shifted my bag strap, mind still buzzing from the deleted video.

Mark was glad his plan was working successfully. Evie staying in the house would make everything easier for him. But as they were talking, the front door opened suddenly.Heavy footsteps came down the hall. Alex walked in, shoulders tight, eyes scanning the room.

Evie’s face squeezed with shock and frustration as she saw him. The night was about to get even more complicated.

Alex stared at Mark, his mouth open in disbelief. He let out a short laugh, trying to play it cool. “You’re joking right?” he asked in that funny tone, like it was all some big prank between guys. His eyes darted around the room, hoping for a punchline. Mark’s face stayed completely straight. No smile. No wink. Just cold, serious eyes locked on Alex. I sat there on the couch, wine glass still in my hand, watching the whole thing in silence. My heart beat fast but I kept my mouth shut. The tension felt like a wire pulled tight, ready to snap any second. Mom jumped in quickly to break it. She waved her hand and chuckled softly. “Come on honey, you know it’s not possible, don’t be silly now. We’re all just having fun here.” Mark finally chuckled, leaning back on the couch like nothing happened. “Yeah yeah, I was just kidding.” He waved it off with his hand. “Alright Alex, simple dare then. Stand up and do ten push-ups right here. No cheating.” Alex grumbled but stood up. He dropped t

When Mom saw Alex coming in, she lit up right away. Then hurried over, arms open. “Alex! Oh, welcome,” she said, pulling him inside with a warm hug. She patted his back like he was her son. “It’s so good to see your face this evening. We were just sitting here talking about spending more time together as a family. Perfect timing.” Mark’s face tightened beside me on the couch. His jaw went hard, eyes narrowing just a fraction. I didn’t turn around. I kept staring at the tea in my cup, fingers gripping it tighter. The last person I wanted to deal with right now was Alex. Not after everything. Alex finished greeting Mom, thanking her softly for the welcome, his voice polite and smooth. Then he walked straight toward me. His footsteps sounded too loud in the room. “Hey Evie,” he said, stopping close. Mark moved fast, stepping right between us like it was nothing. He blocked the path smoothly, flashing that easy smile of his. “Good to see you drop by, Alex.” He stuck his hand out firm.

When I got back to the office, the excitement from the senator’s contract was still bubbling inside me. I called all the available staff into the main conference room. Sarah, James, Lisa, and about twelve other team members gathered around the long table, looking at me with curious eyes. “Everyone, listen up,” I said, standing at the head of the table. “We just secured a million-dollar contract for the senator’s daughter’s birthday. This is one of the biggest we’ve ever landed. It means we have a very big week ahead of us. Planning, vendor meetings, site visits, design approvals, and full-scale preparations. I need all of you focused and ready. No delays, no excuses. This event has to be perfect.” Sarah leaned forward. “When do we start the initial proposals?” “Today,” I replied. “James, I want lighting and stage concepts by tomorrow afternoon. Lisa, start researching high-end catering options and imported flowers. The rest of you, review the brief I’ll send in the next hour. We’ll

The question hung in the air like a dark cloud. I stared at the picture on my phone for what felt like forever. My thumb hovered over the reply button. I wanted to type something angry, to ask who they were and what they wanted from me. But I stopped myself. Replying would only make me really look like a victim. It would show them that they had gotten to me. No. I said to myself, It would only make sense if I acted like I hadn’t seen anything. I switched off the phone completely and placed it on the bedside table. The room felt too quiet. I climbed into bed, pulled the covers up to my chin, and stared at the ceiling. My mind was still racing with images from the party, Alex on his knee, Mum’s happy face, Mark’s hand on me in that hallway. The flash of the camera. Sleep didn’t come easy. I tossed and turned for a long time before I finally drifted off. The next day would be a long one, I thought as I closed my eyes. Morning came too quickly. I woke up with a slight headache

Suddenly, a bright flash came from the far end of the hallway. Like the click of a camera or a phone flashlight going off. We both froze. Someone was there. Watching. Taking pictures. I pushed Mark back hard, my palms pressing firmly against his chest. My heart was hammering so loud I could hear it in my ears. I quickly adjusted my dress, pulling the fabric down and smoothing out any wrinkles with trembling hands. I fixed my hair too, making sure nothing looked out of place. Mark’s face changed from surprise to pure anger in a second. He didn’t waste time talking to me. He turned sharply and ran after the person, his shoes echoing loudly down the hallway. I stood there alone for a moment, trying to steady my breathing. My mind was spinning. Who could it be? A guest who wandered off? One of the waiters? Someone who knew too much about me and Mark? Or was that the blackmailer? The questions kept coming, but I had no answers. I took one last deep breath, forced my legs to move, and wal
