Gabriella's POV

"—and then Darius came along to claim the proposal but I beat him to it and got the patent." Davis droned on

"Nice." I said half-heartedly

"Nice? I just told you how I worked hard during my travels and all I get is 'Nice'?" He turned to me annoyed that I was fawning over him like before.

"Sorry," I apologized with zero sincerity. "I'm just not interested."

"What do you mean by that?" He raised a brow.

"When will we reach your family house again?" I ignored his question, looking out the window.

"In a few minutes. But you haven't answered me."

I rolled my eyes. "I'm tired, Davis. You dragged me impromptu, the least you can do is leave me myself before we arrive."

"Maddy would have been more enthusiastic." He muttered loud enough for me to hear but I closed my eyes pretending to be asleep.

Just a week ago I would have launched into a series of questions and apologies because of that statement but now?

I wish Maddy all luck for dealing with his nagging ass.

Within ten minutes the car pulled into a massive compound.

I had only been to the Castillo family house once and that was over nine years ago. It looked so much bigger than what was in my memory.

The structure was tall and seemed to stretch through acres. A series of columns lined the entrance, Each one having intricate carvings.

Among our cars were several others meaning whatever was going on was serious enough for the whole family to gather.

Davis and I walked in with my hand reluctantly in his.

His parents waved us over and I put on a stiff smile as I greeted them.

"Davis, remember you have to be on your best behavior and impress him. Any wrong move can mean the end of our branch." Davis' father said with a serious tone.

His mom was also pale. Checking out clothes and patting her face. I looked around to see everyone in a state of panic.

Their energy affected me to the point my heart started beating fast out of nervous anticipation.

Before I could ask Davis about this uncle, a gong rang. Davis's parents walked towards the front of a large staircase and Davis dragged me along while the other family members followed behind.

The muttering abruptly stopped and I looked up to see a large man followed by two other men walking down the stairs.

As he got closer Davis's grip got tighter but I couldn't be bothered as the man came into view.

My eyes widened and my breath temporarily seized.

Davis's dad smiled and went forward.

"Younger brother. Welcome back home. Hope the journey wasn't too hard."

He got no answer as the man's gaze rested on me and didn't move. I couldn't tear myself away from it.

"Uncle," Davis pulled me forward. "This is Gabriella. My fiancee."

'Tigrotta.'

It was Mariano. The man that had taken my first time last night. The man that I ran away from because we were from different worlds.

He was my future uncle in law. Shit.

"Your fiancee?" His husky voice had amusement behind it.

I couldn't look at him. My eyes darted everywhere but him. I wished for the ground to open and swallow me whole.

"Boss, the meeting has been set." A man walked towards him.

He casually glanced in my direction then froze. Our eyes widened at the same time.

It was Vincent. Mariano's right-hand man. His presence just certified the fact that I wasn't hallucinating.

The silence that followed Vincent's frozen expression lasted only a second before Mariano smoothly looked away from me like I was nothing more than furniture.

"Vincent." His voice was low and even.

Vincent snapped his attention back to him. "Sir."

"Push the meeting back thirty minutes." He said it casually, like it was an afterthought. "I have something small to attend to first."

"Of course." Vincent didn't ask questions.

I felt those mismatched eyes slide back to me briefly before he turned to address Davis's father and the room erupted back into chatter and movement.

My legs were not working properly.

"Are you okay?" Davis leaned down to me.

"I'm…I feel a little dizzy actually." It wasn't entirely a lie. My head was spinning and I felt a little nauseous. "Can I use one of the rooms to sit down for a moment?"

Davis's mother immediately pointed me down the left corridor, third door. I thanked her and walked as steadily as my legs would allow me.

The room was a small sitting room, quiet and dim with heavy curtains drawn. I pressed my back against the door the moment it closed and squeezed my eyes shut.

Mariano was Davis's uncle.

Mariano was the new family head.

Mariano—

The door pushed open behind me. I stumbled forward and spun around to see the object of my forbidden encounter.

He stepped inside and closed the door behind him with a quiet click. He looked exactly as he had in Vegas. Unhurried. Unbothered. Like the world arranged itself around his schedule.

"You run fast for someone with sore legs." His voice was low and teasing.

My mouth went dry.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"No?" He took one step forward and I took one back until the backs of my knees found the edge of a chair. He stopped close enough that I had to tilt my head up to hold his gaze.

"Because I came back to an empty room and a girl who didn't even leave a name."

"I…It was a mistake. One night. That's all it was."

He tilted his head studying me. "Was it?"

"Yes." My voice came out smaller than I intended.

He was quiet for a moment. Then the corner of his mouth lifted.

"What if I let you in on a secret, tigrotta."

I couldn't breathe.

"What secret?"

He leaned in until his mouth was close to my ear.

"You were always meant to be mine."

"What?—" I breathed out but before I could understand his words, the door swung open.

I looked to see Davis. He stood in the door frame, his gaze cutting between us.

  • One Night Stand With My Future Uncle In Law    SIXTY EIGHT

Gabriella's POV "Gabriella." Davis stepped directly toward me, his face tight. His voice was low, fast, and urgent. "You are making a massive scene in front of the board members. Please. Stop talking right now.""Why should I stop?" I asked him, staring back at him. "Because I am telling the absolute truth to their faces? Because I am saying out loud what every single person here is thinking in secret?"Davis reached out and grabbed my upper arm with his hand. His grip was incredibly tight, his fingers digging into my skin through the fabric of my black dress. "You are making a fatal mistake right now, Gabriella.""Let go of my arm immediately," I said, glaring at his fingers."Gabriella, listen to me—""I said let go of me, Davis."He slowly released his grip, dropping his hand back to his side. His face was bright red with embarrassment, and his jaw muscle was twitching violently. But he did not say another word to me in front of the guests.I turned my back on him, walked straight

  • One Night Stand With My Future Uncle In Law    SIXTY SEVEN

Gabriella's POV We stepped out of our car and walked inside the front doors. The main foyer was completely packed with guests. People were standing around in tight clusters, talking to one another in low, hushed whispers. I recognized several of their faces from the grand family gathering that had occurred weeks ago. Others in the crowd were complete strangers to me. All of them looked exactly like they belonged to a wealthy corporate world that I did not understand at all.A uniformed servant appeared in front of us, offering refreshments from a silver tray. My mother took a glass of water. My father shook his head in refusal. Raphael stepped up right beside me, placing his hand firmly on my lower back."Stay very close to me," he whispered in my ear. "Do not wander off alone into the rooms.""I will not leave your side," I promised him.Suddenly, Davis appeared from the middle of the crowd. He was wearing a dark black suit, a white silk tie, and a very somber, sad expression on his

Gabriella's POV I nodded my head. "I know. I will be very careful around him."My mother stood up from the mattress. "There is something else you need to know. Something I need to tell you before tomorrow morning.""What is it?" I asked, looking up at her."The senior members of the Castillo family are holding a public memorial service for Mariano tomorrow," she explained. "It is a massive public event. Everyone connected to the family business is expected to attend."I felt my stomach drop with sudden nausea. "A memorial service? He is not even dead, Mom. The authorities have not even found an actual body in the river.""I know that," she said, her voice dropping. "But Davis's faction wants to move forward immediately. They want to show the public a sense of total unity. They want to present a strong financial front to the investors.""Whose specific idea was this?""It is Davis's branch of the family. They are the ones who are actively pushing for the service. They want to official

  • One Night Stand With My Future Uncle In Law    SIXTY FIVE

Gabriella's POVMy mother sat on the edge of my mattress with her hands tightly clasped together in her lap and her eyes fixed directly on my face. She looked exactly like she was bracing her entire body for a piece of terrible news. I did not blame her for that reaction at all. I had just told her that a man whom the entire city believed to be dead was actually breathing, and that her own daughter had been intentionally lying to everyone in the family for days."Tell me everything, Gabriella," she said. Her voice sounded steady, but I could see the visible tension tightening the muscles in her shoulders. "From the very beginning of the incident. Do not leave a single detail out of the story."I took a deep breath, expanded my lungs, and started talking to her. I told her about the high-speed car crash and the loud explosion that followed it. I described the exact moment Vincent had pulled Mariano's body out from the burning wreckage right before the fire consumed the entire vehicle.

  • One Night Stand With My Future Uncle In Law    SIXTY FOUR

Gabriella's POV "Mariano," I said, and the moment his name left my lips, I started crying. I could not control the emotional reaction. The tears came out fast, hot, and heavy, streaming down my face. "Oh my god, Mariano. You are okay. You are really alive.""I am fine, Tigrotta," he said through the speaker. His voice sounded much weaker and more breathless than usual, but he was speaking to me. He was breathing. He was functional. "I am so sorry I was unable to call your line sooner. I have been trying to get a secure cellular signal from this location for three days.""I do not care about that," I said, wiping my cheeks with my free hand. "I do not care how many days it took you. You are alive. That is the single thing that matters to me in this world.""I am alive," he confirmed, letting out a low grunt of pain as he shifted. "I am badly hurt, but I am alive.""Where exactly are you staying?" I asked, leaning forward on the mattress. "Can I come to the location to see you?""No,"

  • One Night Stand With My Future Uncle In Law    SIXTY THREE

Gabriella's POV "But I am not broken down," I said, my jaw tightening. "I am angry.""I know you are strong," Raphael said, squeezing my hand again to calm me. "But Davis does not need to know that. He must never suspect it. I know this is incredibly difficult for you. I know every instinct in your body wants to fight him openly. I know you want to tell our parents and the world the absolute truth about his character. But you cannot do it. Not yet. There are far too many powerful people involved in this conspiracy. Too many people who want Mariano buried permanently.""What do you mean by that?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Who else is involved?"Raphael glanced quickly over his shoulder at our parents. They were completely distracted. The distant sound of clinking porcelain came from the kitchen where my mother was working. My father was still staring silently out the front window, lost in his own thoughts."Someone very high up inside the Castillo family structure

Gabriella's POVThe call connected on the third ring. I was still standing in the middle of the dining room with my hand throbbing and my heart racing. The house was quiet behind me. Gabriella's POVMy father stood up from the table slowly, using the back of his chair to steady himself.
