“Congratulations, Lioraé.”
I had imagined this night a thousand times since the first time Evan kissed me and asked me to be his girlfriend. He is going down on one knee and asking us to spend the rest of our lives together.
“Your wish finally came through,” Camille exclaimed, one arm crossed over her body as the other lifted the champagne glass to her mouth gently. Her smile did not tell me if she was truly happy or not, but I did not care; I was too happy to care.
“I am just so happy.” I press my palms together and squeal happily as my eyes scan the hall, trying to locate Evan.
Just about twenty minutes ago, he had asked me to marry him, and I had said yes. Under the glittering chandeliers in the garden of his house. My house will be soon enough.
“Lioraé?” I turned to my mom, who was standing with a huge smile on her face. The cheap makeup she had made looked good under the bright light, and her signature red-stained lips were puckering at me.
“Where is Evan? We have to take pictures.”
Her words carried the echoes in my mind as my eyes scanned, looking for him. I sighed gently and then tilted my head.
“He must be upstairs trying to get some work done.” I turned on my heels. “I will get him.” My voice lingered behind me as I stepped into the house and gently climbed the stairs.
Once I landed on the top of the stairs, voices and loud moans were in the air, and I froze at the sound of them. What the hell was happening? Did a guest think now was a good time to have sexy time? I shook my head and moved to Evan’s room, but the closer I moved, the louder the sound.
My body feels heavy as goosebumps take over my entire skin.
“Oh fuck!” Evans’s voice. A voice I have learnt to memorise hit my ears, and I blinked rapidly.
My palm connected with the cold doorknob underneath, sending shivers down my spine. I gulped the knot in my throat as I turned and pushed the door open, and on the bed lay three women coiled around him.
My boyfriend, who had just proposed to me, had one woman leisurely sucking on his dick aggressively, while another sat on his face, and the last one just sat there, trailing her hand over his chest while she had her breasts massaged by him.
Screams and gasps filled the room. I opened my mouth and closed it several times, no sound escaping. My fingers trembled as I tried to curl them into a ball.
“Evan?” My voice comes out louder than I had expected, and the thumping in front of me stops, all four of them turning to face me.
He sat up and then stared at me for a while before a smirk climbed his face. He tumbled out of bed naked with his hands stretched out as he staggered to me. The smell of alcohol carried with him as he approached me.
He stopped too close and pressed his hand onto my shoulders.
“Sweetheart,” he exclaimed, and a hiccup followed. “Come join us.”
I blinked rapidly as my heart thumped inside of me. “What?” The word falls out with great caution.
He smirked once again and shook his head. “We are having fun, and if you join us, you will…”
“You are cheating on me,” I state the obvious, and his hands on my shoulders fall to his side as he shrugs.
“And you are asking me to…” My eyes wandered to the girls who were seated upright as if they were waiting for me to join them for real. They had huge smiles on their faces, and sweat clung to their foreheads.
“Evan, please,” I whispered, unsure what it was I was begging for. “Tell me that this was a mistake.” The words followed, dropping in the air.
“Oh my gosh! Can’t I have a little fun to celebrate?”
“You call this celebrating? Having sex on the night you proposed to me?” My legs felt heavy even though I wanted to bolt out.
“I am celebrating our engagement and you should…” He touched my shoulders once again, and I shuddered underneath his touch. He tugged on the strap of my dress, trying to take it off.
“Stop.” I took a step back and glared at him intensely.
“See that? That is the problem with you; it has always been the problem with you.”
“Hmm?” I hummed, unable to process what exactly was happening.
“You refused to allow me to touch you, always claiming to be saving it for me, and even now, when it is certain that I was going to marry you, I have put a ring on your hand, yet you still won't let me touch you.”
My eyes – he tried his body, landing on his dick that had not fallen. “See that!” His eyes followed mine and then went back to my face, a frown taking the place of the smirk.
“You turned me off.” He turned to the woman, and they rolled their hair in their hands, sending winks at him. He sent out a moan which pierced into my ears.
“Evan?”
“If you won’t join us, then go and wait. I will be down soon.”
My legs trembled as I stumbled back, my finger tracing the gold ring that now stood on my finger. What felt like a promise earlier now felt like a curse, turning my stomach and making bile rise in my throat.
“I take the ring off and throw it at the back of his head. He turned to me sharply, his eyes going down to the ring on the floor.
“What do you think you are doing?”
“Keep your ring.” My voice was steady, even though my entire body shook. “And you filth,” I spat out, holding my stomach to prevent myself from falling over.
“Who else would marry you if not I? Who would marry a prude like you?”
“I do not care if I ever get married,” she scoffed and turned. “I never want to see you again,” I murmured before tromping off.
“You will be back, Lioraé; you do not have the luxury of not being back.” Evan’s voice followed me as I stormed out of the room and down till I was at the front desk.
“Where are you going?” My mom’s voice stopped me before I was finally outside.
“Away,” I replied, not turning to her. She touched my shoulders and spun me around.
“But it is your engagement party,” she replied, searching my face. I pressed my lips together and raised my hand to her face.
“The engagement is off; I won’t marry him.”
LIORAÉI tried to move, but Soren put his hand over mine and shook his head. He looked straight at Margaux.“What favor?"His answer seemed to delight her because she set down her cup and shifted to the edge of the seat.“I knew it, Mr. Vale. You'd be very reasonable.” She smiled widely and nodded. “Yes, yes, I knew it. Wealthy people like you aren't unreasonable.”She was beating around the bush. How could she be so shameless?Just by her sitting down opposite us, she had fulfilled the words of Vivienne and Elara. With a family like mine, I could never be useful to a man like Soren. I'd just be baggage whose family keeps dragging him down.Like a leech.“But don't worry.” She laughed nervously, waving her hand in the air. “It's nothing difficult.”Nothing difficult. I almost scoffed. She was going to ask him to elevate her from poverty if she could.Soren crossed his legs and gestured to her. She saw this as her opportunity. She cleared her throat and pressed her palms together.“Lio
LIORAÉMy eyes fluttered open. The thought of my mother first popped into my mind.I shook it off before I sat up in bed.It was Sunday, but Soren had his laptop on his lap and a focused look on his face.He was not looking at me, but he seemed to realize that I was awake.“You are awake,” he said simply.I nodded, biting my bottom lip.I didn't want to think about it, but this man was too good-looking. He looked like a Greek god gracing us with his presence. He finally looked up from his laptop and pointed to the hot water flask on the bedside table.I reached for it, the warmth transferring almost immediately.“What is this?” I squeaked, feeling my throat scratch all of a sudden.“Ginger tea.”He returned his gaze to the laptop, typing furiously on the keyboard.“Ginger tea?”He nodded.“I heard it is good for morning sickness.”I opened it and brought it closer to my lips. The strong scent hit my nose first. I took a sip, and the knot in my throat suddenly began to melt away.It wa
LIORAÉThe back of my ears suddenly felt hotter, even under the chilly air from the AC.My mother was never this nice to me. She knew about Soren, and maybe even the baby. As usual, I was her ticket out of poverty.“I always thought Evan Mercer was a great catch, but I was wrong,” she beamed with joy.I could already picture the smile stretching across her face. In her mind, Soren's fortune had already become ours. “I should have trusted you when you called off the engagement. You have always been a great dreamer,” she continued, praising me.I never intended to fall into Soren Vale's bed. It was a stupid mistake born out of a heartbreak I didn't deserve.“Mom...”“Be good, Lioraé. Mothers are always right,” she cut me off before I could stop her from building castles she didn't deserve.“You know your father has some unpaid debts. I'm sure if you ask Mr. Vale about it, he will—”“Enough, Mom.” My voice rose. She sputtered on the other end, obviously taken aback by my sudden sharpnes
LIORAÉ“Who do you think you are?” Amira jumped to my defense.I grabbed her hand and pulled her back with a shake of my head.Elara glanced at her and laughed mockingly. “Are you already recruiting low-lifes like you? To defend you?”She wiped her hands mockingly against her skirt and tilted her head. “Just because Soren is giving in to your ridiculous demands doesn't mean that your status has changed. Do not forget who you are.”She was right.Soren’s kindness didn't change things. Neither did the life growing inside me.We were worlds apart.A girl could dream, but she knew when to stop.“Let me tell you. I have lived in this life long enough to know you are the only one who would get hurt when you get dumped,” she continued.Amira was shaking violently. Right now, the only thing holding her back was me. She was ready to start a hair-pulling fight in the middle of the food court at the mall.“You are so sure she would get dumped. The only reason is that he didn't choose you,” Amira
LIORAÉSoren had insisted on picking me up at the house at dawn; it didn't matter what I said, he just kept on saying. “It’s too early for a lady to be walking about.” It wasn't too early at all; it was a little past six am when he pulled out in front of my house and walked up to the door. My mom
LIORAÉEven in this dress that made me look like a princess, I was still feeling out of place. Everyone had a perfect face, like this was some kind of fashion show where everyone was struggling to get the perfect prize. “You look nervous.” “That is because I am.” “You don't have to worry; I will
LIORAÉ“Here.” Soren handed me a first-aid box. I took it from him as he sat carefully next to me. I dropped it on the coffee table, opening it and carefully rummaging through the contents of the box. I took out an ointment and some Q-tips alongside bandages. I turned to him, and his steady eyes o
LIORAÉ“Ms Alott, my office.” I looked up to Soren standing by the doorway. He had a stern expression on his face. I cleared my throat and went up, pulling down my skirt that had somehow found a way to ride up. I slipped in and closed the door behind me, walking over to him sitting on one of the c
