Chapter 3

Penulis: Oxygreen
Viola's POV

Joshua mistook my silence as confirmation. "I mean, what did I even do? So I didn't take care of you when you were sick because I went to be there for Lynnie after her breakup. So I bought the wrong medicine and got you menstrual pain medication instead of fever reducers.

"I already apologized! What more do you want me and Lynnie to do?"

My grip tightened around my glass of water. I stared at Joshua, who was acting as if he'd done nothing wrong. "So, you knew."

He knew I was ill. He knew he had bought the wrong medication.

There was no misunderstanding, no concern, only annoyance and blame because I dared to be upset.

Apparently, I was supposed to be understanding enough to give up my boyfriend while I was sick so he could be there for his heartbroken childhood sweetheart. I also shouldn't have pointed out that he had bought the wrong medicine.

Joshua needed a girlfriend who was magnanimous enough to accept everything between him and Lynn. Unfortunately, I couldn't be that person.

That night, Lynn still slept in the guest bedroom.

After washing up, I locked the door to the master bedroom.

Realizing he couldn't get in, Joshua texted me, demanding, "Are you trying to tell me you want us to sleep in separate rooms?"

While browsing house listings, I slowly replied. "I have a cold. I don't want you to catch it. I couldn't care less if you sleep on the couch or in the guest room."

Joshua replied almost immediately. "You're shamelessly taking advantage of my feelings for you, Viola. You know I like you, so you think you can do whatever you want!"

Joshua's affection for me only existed in his words. His love for Lynn, however, was something he couldn't hide even if he tried.

Like and love weren't on the same level. Much like Lynn and me. She was always more important than I was in his heart.

That was why, time and time again, he chose her over me.

Early the next morning, I went to the hospital for the blood test the doctor had ordered. Fortunately, the results came back clear. The infection hadn't progressed into pneumonia.

I was about to leave when the doctor stopped me. Looking at my blood test results with a grave expression, he asked, "Are your periods usually regular?"

I shook my head. Then, the realization hit me like a ton of bricks.

My mouth went dry, and my heart began to hammer against my ribs. Joshua and I had done it once… two months ago, on my birthday.

The doctor pointed to a specific value on my report. "This level indicates pregnancy. I suggest you head over to OB-GYN for a proper examination. If you really are pregnant, I wouldn't recommend keeping it. The medication you've been taking could have harmful effects on the embryo."

Heart heavy, I followed his instructions and went to the OB-GYN. The moment I received the pregnancy test report, the heart—which I had long thought was numb—still throbbed with a dull ache.

After speaking with the gynecologist, she gave me the same recommendation as the previous doctor. I shouldn't go through with the pregnancy.

I unlocked my phone and stared at Joshua's contact at the top of my chat list. His profile picture was no longer that familiar beam of moonlight he'd used for five years. Now, it was the koala from Lynn's nine-photo collage post, and it was silently mocking my thoughts.

I obtained a surgical consent form for an abortion from the nurse's station. While I was waiting in line to pay the fees, Joshua walked past me with Lynn. "Viola, what are you doing at the hospital?"

Without looking up, I responded half-heartedly, "I haven't recovered from my last cold."

Joshua didn't think much of it. "It's just a minor cold. Why are you making such a big deal out of it? I can't believe you'd come to the hospital for a checkup."

Looking at Lynn, who was leaning weakly in his arms, I immediately understood why he was here.

Lynn forced a smile. "Don't get the wrong idea, Viola. Josh is just accompanying me to see a doctor for my period cramps."

He looked a little distressed. "You've had this issue for ten years, and it still hasn't gotten any better. I swear, these doctors are useless!"

The nurse called out a number, and it happened to be my turn. I handed her the form and walked into the operating room right in front of Joshua.

Yet, he didn't even notice. His head was lowered as his hand rested on Lynn's stomach. He looked anxious and concerned, and he didn't spare me a single glance.

The procedure was over in the blink of an eye, leaving behind nothing but a cold, stinging pain in my abdomen. In a mere 30 minutes, the gift that had briefly appeared in my life vanished.

My phone chimed with a notification from the airline, confirming my itinerary. My ticket to Frostheim had been issued. I locked my phone and left the hospital.

Gale-force winds whipped torrential rain across the streets, making it nearly impossible to hail a cab. As I took shelter at the bus stop, a Maybach zoomed past, flashing right in front of my eyes. Even though it was only for a brief moment, Joshua's and Lynn's faces still appeared in my line of sight.

Viola's POVOn the eve of Valentine's Day, Joshua showed up like clockwork. This time, I didn't ignore him. In fact, I made a beeline straight for him. As soon as he saw me walking toward him, his eyes misted over. His hands trembled, and his face was filled with disbelief. "Vee, you've finally forgiven me—" Before he could finish, he watched as I sprinted right past him and threw myself into the arms of the person standing behind him. His eyes widened in disbelief as I caught hold of that man's tie and pulled him down toward me. Standing on my tiptoes, I bashfully pressed a soft kiss to his lips. Joshua charged over like a madman. "Vee, who is he? Vee!""Let me introduce you. This is my boyfriend, Sylvan Hunter. We've already met each other's parents. When we tie the knot, you're welcome to join the celebration."Joshua was dumbfounded. "Vee, you're lying to me, right? You just hired him to trick me, right?"Ignoring his delusional rambling, Sylvan took my hand and led

Viola's POVThe puppy didn't forget who its owner was. Every day before work, it would see me off, and when I returned home, it would come running to greet me. The warmth I had longed for had quietly found its way into my hands. My new life had begun, and the chapter I once shared with Joshua was officially behind me. In just three short months, I had gradually adapted to life at my new company. …I ran into Joshua again on an ordinary evening. When I arrived home, I found a man at my doorstep. That familiar figure from behind—the one I had stared at countless times before with a heart full of disappointment and despair—instantly made me recognize who it was. The very next second, he bolted from the entrance, almost crashing into me head-on. I instinctively stepped aside to avoid him. The man before me looked haggard, with visible dark circles beneath his eyes. The moment he laid eyes on me, tears welled up in his eyes and almost overflowed. "Vee, you're finally back!"I

However, when Joshua stepped inside and looked around, the figure he had longed for day and night was nowhere to be found. The house was exactly the same as it had been before he left. Joshua's world instantly started spinning. This could only mean one thing. Viola hadn't been back. His stomach began to ache again. His stomach—which Viola had painstakingly nursed back to health—had never truly recovered after she left. The pain brought him back to his senses to some extent. Perhaps Viola would return as soon as her trip was over. Joshua believed that as long as he apologized sincerely, he and Viola would still have a long and lasting future together. He had never stopped to ask himself, why on earth should Viola wait around for him? When that thought crossed his mind, he felt at peace again. All he had to do was wait until tomorrow—until Viola came back—and he would apologize to her and admit that he was the one in the wrong. Lost in this hopeful fantasy, Joshua started tid

Third-person POVMemories of the past came flooding back like a crashing wave with every sip of that soup. Each and every one of Viola's expressions replayed over and over in Joshua's mind. So, this was what longing felt like. Before he realized it, Viola had already taken root and sprouted in the softest corner of his heart. He had been blissfully unaware until now, when he realized that the tiny sprout had already grown into a towering tree. Ever since he met Viola, they had never been out of contact for such a long time. After being away from her for only a day, Joshua realized just how much he missed her. Unbeknownst to him, he had become utterly incapable of living without Viola. She was woven into his flesh and blood, etched into his very soul. He unlocked his phone and dialed her number once more. The familiar automated message informing him the number was no longer in service sounded again. He still hadn't received a reply on WhatsApp. After attempting every avenue,

Third-person POVRight before boarding the plane, Joshua felt restless for some reason. There was a persistent voice in his heart that made him uneasy. He had this sinking feeling that something beyond his control had happened. When he bought this house, he had chosen the city's most luxurious neighborhood. It offered a panoramic view, nestled against the mountains and overlooking a lake. Looking out from the airport, he could vaguely make out that familiar neighborhood in the distance. However, what came to his mind was not the house itself. It was the person who was waiting for him at home. The plane was about to take off, and Lynn kept urging him, "Josh, if we don't get on the plane right now, we'll miss it!" Hustled along by her, Joshua boarded the plane. Even though he knew full well there was no signal, he couldn't help unlock his phone, hoping against hope for a text from Viola. As the plane took off with a deafening roar, a sudden, overwhelming sense of dread welled

  • Our Love Breaks Like My Fever Did   Chapter 4

Viola's POVClutching my lower abdomen, which had throbbed until it was completely numb, I waited for two hours before a cab finally pulled up and took me home. By the time I made it home, I was drenched from head to toe. My dress clung tightly to my skin, rumpled and splattered with mud from the Maybach. Near the entrance, Lynn's high heels and Joshua's dress shoes were neatly lined up together. When I walked into the house, a rich, savory aroma drifted into my nose. I followed the scent to the kitchen. Joshua was busy at the stove, wearing my apron. Lynn was hovering beside him, chattering away, occasionally wiping the sweat from his forehead. They really did look like a family. When she turned around and spotted me, she gasped and shot Joshua a reproachful look. "How'd you end up so drenched, Viola? This is all Josh's fault. I told him to wait for you, but he insisted that you could get home by yourself." Joshua also turned toward me when he heard that. He then emerged fr
