Chapter 4

Penulis: Oxygreen
Viola's POV

Clutching my lower abdomen, which had throbbed until it was completely numb, I waited for two hours before a cab finally pulled up and took me home.

By the time I made it home, I was drenched from head to toe. My dress clung tightly to my skin, rumpled and splattered with mud from the Maybach. Near the entrance, Lynn's high heels and Joshua's dress shoes were neatly lined up together.

When I walked into the house, a rich, savory aroma drifted into my nose. I followed the scent to the kitchen.

Joshua was busy at the stove, wearing my apron. Lynn was hovering beside him, chattering away, occasionally wiping the sweat from his forehead. They really did look like a family.

When she turned around and spotted me, she gasped and shot Joshua a reproachful look. "How'd you end up so drenched, Viola? This is all Josh's fault. I told him to wait for you, but he insisted that you could get home by yourself."

Joshua also turned toward me when he heard that. He then emerged from the kitchen with a frown.

He hastily grabbed a towel from the chair and draped it over my head. "How old are you? Don't you know how to take care of yourself? Don't go catching another cold."

After taking a shower and stepping out of the bathroom, three dishes and a pot of soup were already set on the table. Lynn motioned for me to join them for dinner. So, I sat across from her and Joshua.

She was all smiles as she placed a piece of meat on my plate. "Viola, you have to try Josh's signature honey-glazed ribs. He used to make them for me all the time when we were kids!"

I looked at Joshua, who wore a faint, indulgent smile. "I haven't made them in years. My cooking might not be as good as it used to be."

I picked up the rib and took a slow, deliberate bite.

Joshua was a fantastic cook. The balance of sweet and tangy in the glaze was perfect. The meat was tender and juicy, and the chicken soup was rich and flavorful without being greasy. I couldn't find a single flaw.

After five years together, I had no idea he even knew how to cook. He had never told me, nor had he ever cooked a single meal for me, yet he had made this dish for Lynn countless times.

Lynn was, and always would be, his exception.

Monday arrived, bringing the start of another workweek.

When I got out of bed, Joshua and Lynn were already having breakfast. As usual, there were pancakes and oatmeal on the table. I had no appetite, so I just nibbled on a piece of bread.

When it was time to leave, Lynn went downstairs first, while Joshua went to use the bathroom. When he walked out, I was in the master bedroom, packing my luggage.

He stepped inside and told me, "Lynn and I are heading out of town on a business trip for a week. She's already packed my luggage for me this afternoon."

I nodded calmly and continued packing my clothes.

Looking at the clothes scattered across the bed, Joshua furrowed his brow. "Why are you packing your clothes? Where are you going?"

I looked up at him, attempting to commit his features to memory one last time. This was the face I had loved for five years.

This man, whom I had loved for five years, had drained me of all my courage and devotion. In the end, I was left with no choice but to leave in such a miserable state.

Before I could answer, Lynn's call came through, urging him to come downstairs.

Joshua put on his tie and flashed me a resigned smile. "Have fun."

Watching him leave without the slightest hesitation, I swallowed the final goodbye that had been on the tip of my tongue, holding onto the last shred of my dignity. I nodded and accepted his well wishes.

Once I left him, I would undoubtedly be happy. I would no longer spend my days dwelling on disappointment and sadness.

Dragging the suitcase I had brought with me when I first moved in, I took one last look at the place I called home. I had lived here for five long years, yet the evidence of my existence was pitifully slim.

Lynn's cardigan was draped over the couch, her cosmetic products were all over the coffee table, and her period medication sat on the dining table.

She had been here for less than three days, yet her belongings had already claimed every corner of the house, much like the space she occupied in Joshua's heart. Aside from this single suitcase, it was as if I had never existed in this home at all.

The cab pulled out of the neighborhood and arrived at the airport.

Lynn had posted a picture on her social media feed of her and Joshua's flight. It was departing ten minutes before mine.

Before the plane took off, I reached up and felt my forehead. I didn't have a fever anymore. It seemed I was completely cured.

That high fever known as love had burned relentlessly in the depths of my heart for five long years. It had burned away my youth, reducing my love to ashes.

  • Our Love Breaks Like My Fever Did   Chapter 9

Viola's POVOn the eve of Valentine's Day, Joshua showed up like clockwork. This time, I didn't ignore him. In fact, I made a beeline straight for him. As soon as he saw me walking toward him, his eyes misted over. His hands trembled, and his face was filled with disbelief. "Vee, you've finally forgiven me—" Before he could finish, he watched as I sprinted right past him and threw myself into the arms of the person standing behind him. His eyes widened in disbelief as I caught hold of that man's tie and pulled him down toward me. Standing on my tiptoes, I bashfully pressed a soft kiss to his lips. Joshua charged over like a madman. "Vee, who is he? Vee!""Let me introduce you. This is my boyfriend, Sylvan Hunter. We've already met each other's parents. When we tie the knot, you're welcome to join the celebration."Joshua was dumbfounded. "Vee, you're lying to me, right? You just hired him to trick me, right?"Ignoring his delusional rambling, Sylvan took my hand and led

Viola's POVThe puppy didn't forget who its owner was. Every day before work, it would see me off, and when I returned home, it would come running to greet me. The warmth I had longed for had quietly found its way into my hands. My new life had begun, and the chapter I once shared with Joshua was officially behind me. In just three short months, I had gradually adapted to life at my new company. …I ran into Joshua again on an ordinary evening. When I arrived home, I found a man at my doorstep. That familiar figure from behind—the one I had stared at countless times before with a heart full of disappointment and despair—instantly made me recognize who it was. The very next second, he bolted from the entrance, almost crashing into me head-on. I instinctively stepped aside to avoid him. The man before me looked haggard, with visible dark circles beneath his eyes. The moment he laid eyes on me, tears welled up in his eyes and almost overflowed. "Vee, you're finally back!"I

However, when Joshua stepped inside and looked around, the figure he had longed for day and night was nowhere to be found. The house was exactly the same as it had been before he left. Joshua's world instantly started spinning. This could only mean one thing. Viola hadn't been back. His stomach began to ache again. His stomach—which Viola had painstakingly nursed back to health—had never truly recovered after she left. The pain brought him back to his senses to some extent. Perhaps Viola would return as soon as her trip was over. Joshua believed that as long as he apologized sincerely, he and Viola would still have a long and lasting future together. He had never stopped to ask himself, why on earth should Viola wait around for him? When that thought crossed his mind, he felt at peace again. All he had to do was wait until tomorrow—until Viola came back—and he would apologize to her and admit that he was the one in the wrong. Lost in this hopeful fantasy, Joshua started tid

Third-person POVMemories of the past came flooding back like a crashing wave with every sip of that soup. Each and every one of Viola's expressions replayed over and over in Joshua's mind. So, this was what longing felt like. Before he realized it, Viola had already taken root and sprouted in the softest corner of his heart. He had been blissfully unaware until now, when he realized that the tiny sprout had already grown into a towering tree. Ever since he met Viola, they had never been out of contact for such a long time. After being away from her for only a day, Joshua realized just how much he missed her. Unbeknownst to him, he had become utterly incapable of living without Viola. She was woven into his flesh and blood, etched into his very soul. He unlocked his phone and dialed her number once more. The familiar automated message informing him the number was no longer in service sounded again. He still hadn't received a reply on WhatsApp. After attempting every avenue,

Third-person POVRight before boarding the plane, Joshua felt restless for some reason. There was a persistent voice in his heart that made him uneasy. He had this sinking feeling that something beyond his control had happened. When he bought this house, he had chosen the city's most luxurious neighborhood. It offered a panoramic view, nestled against the mountains and overlooking a lake. Looking out from the airport, he could vaguely make out that familiar neighborhood in the distance. However, what came to his mind was not the house itself. It was the person who was waiting for him at home. The plane was about to take off, and Lynn kept urging him, "Josh, if we don't get on the plane right now, we'll miss it!" Hustled along by her, Joshua boarded the plane. Even though he knew full well there was no signal, he couldn't help unlock his phone, hoping against hope for a text from Viola. As the plane took off with a deafening roar, a sudden, overwhelming sense of dread welled
