Chapter 1

Author: Asteria
Luke Randall's words left both Silas Randall and me frozen where we stood.

It had been 27 days since I realized Silas’ heart had drifted away from us.

Every time he left Luke and me because of Julia, I would ask Luke to address him as Alpha.

It was my way of reminding both of us not to expect anything from a mate whose heart was elsewhere, but Luke didn't see it that way.

He was only eight years old, the age when an Alpha father was still a hero in his eyes.

Every single time, he would bite his lip, hesitate for what felt like forever, and finally whisper in the tiniest voice, "Alpha."

But today, he said it on his own clearly and firmly.

It was as if he had repeated that to himself countless times before.

Seeing both of us stand there in silence, Luke reached for my hand and looked up at Silas.

"Alpha, you should go."

He then tugged gently at my sleeve.

"Come on, Mom. The movie's about to start."

He wrapped his arms around me. He was absorbed by getting into the theater in time.

Watching a movie together was Silas' idea. He had offered it as a way to make up for missing Luke's birthday.

For two weeks, Luke had marked off the days on the calendar, counting every night before bed how many days remained until the movie outing.

I followed him stiffly, but it felt like an icy claw had closed around my heart, squeezing so tightly that I could barely breathe.

I had discovered Silas' betrayal by accident while putting away his clothes.

When he came home, he had forgotten to empty one of his pockets.

Inside were three tickets to Moonshadow Park.

Luke's only birthday wish that year had been for the three of us to watch the Firefly Festival together.

Silas had said pack affairs kept him busy and refused without hesitation.

Yet only three days later, he had taken Julia and her pup there instead.

I found a post Julia had uploaded while scrolling through Silas' phone.

In the photo, Silas had on a tailored black suit while carrying her pup, Aiden, in his arms.

Julia stood beside him as she held onto his arm intimately. Countless fireflies danced behind them.

There was a caption.

[Of course I wanted to share my favorite place with my dad.]

Julia had grown up with Silas.

After her mate died protecting Silas during a territorial conflict, she was left to raise Aiden alone.

That night, Silas and I had the fiercest argument since becoming mates.

I insisted on dissolving our mate bond and leaving with Luke.

Silas frowned and, with the commanding authority common to Alphas, told me I was overreacting.

He said Julia's mate had died protecting him, and that caring for his widow was a responsibility he could never abandon.

Looking at Luke trembling behind the doorway, I dug my nails deep into my palms.

I knew that if I forcibly took Luke away, he would spend the rest of his life longing for his father.

But I also knew that one compromise would only lead to countless more.

I refused to let Luke spend his puphood trapped in endless waiting and disappointment because of Silas' so-called responsibility.

So I chose another path.

I had Silas sign a mate bond dissolution agreement and gave him thirty days.

If, within those 30 days, he truly returned to his family, then for Luke's sake, I would pretend none of this had ever happened.

But if he couldn't, then during those 30 days, I would personally help Luke let go of his dependence on his father.

Today was the 27th day.

Luke had called Silas 'Alpha' on his own.

Luke eagerly tore away the wrapping. There was a brand-new game console inside. It was even more beautiful than the previous one, and it was decorated with elegant designs.A single sentence was engraved on the box.[For my beloved pup, Luke. I will love you forever.]Silas looked at Luke with gentle affection and said softly, "I'm sorry, Luke. I kept promising to play with you, but I never kept my word in the past. From now on, let's play together, okay?"Holding the console tightly, Luke's tears fell onto the box.Silas then walked over to me. He went down on one knee and opened the navy velvet box. There was a moonstone ring that shimmered softly beneath the light inside."Elena."He looked up at me. Only genuine remorse and unwavering determination remained in his eyes."I know I made countless unforgivable mistakes in the past. I neglected you and our pup. I left the two of you to endure endless waiting and disappointment."I don't dare ask you to forgive me immediately,

"Silas!"The moment Julia saw Silas, she burst into tears."Look at how they're treating me! I only wanted you to come back to us! I only wanted Aiden to have a father!"Silas looked at her firmly."I've told you before. I feel nothing for you except a sense of responsibility."If you continue harassing my Luna and my pup, I'll immediately end every form of assistance beyond my obligation and petition the Council of Elders to take action against your act of harassment."Julia stared at him in disbelief."You can't do this to me! My mate died saving you! How can you be so ungrateful?"Silas remained silent for a long moment before speaking softly."Over the years, I've provided you with the best living conditions. I've resolved every challenge you faced. I've fulfilled every responsibility I owed."Disgust and exhaustion filled his eyes."But taking responsibility doesn't mean sacrificing my mate and my pup. Leave, and don't appear before us again."Looking into Silas' unwav

Silas stood where he was as he watched Luke and me walk away.Only after we disappeared at the end of the corridor did he slowly sink to the ground. He covered his face with his long fingers as quiet sobs escaped him. From that day on, Silas appeared outside the healer's den every single day. Each morning, he would wait by the entrance and ask the guards to pass a cream cake to me.Each evening, he would wait outside the healer's den. After my shift ended, he would follow from a distance to make sure I returned home safely before quietly turning around and leaving. He no longer tried to approach me. He also stopped trying to force Luke to accept him again. He simply watched over us from afar. He was like a guardian who had lost the right to stand by our side but still refused to leave.I never accepted his cakes. I also never voluntarily spoke to him.But I knew Luke noticed everything. One night, I got up to head to the kitchen and found Luke standing quietly by the window. H

Back in his room, Silas opened a drawer and retrieved a photograph. It was taken on Luke's seventh birthday.Luke was running under the sun with a paper airplane in his hand. He was smiling so brightly that the entire picture seemed to come alive.Silas reached out and gently touched Luke's face in the photo. At last, tears streamed down his face.He recalled how Luke used to cling to his leg. Luke would call him Dad in that sweet, childish voice and beg him to tell stories and play with him. Each time, Silas would answer the same way."I still have work to do. I'll play with you next time."Silas would then leave the hopeful little pup with me.He had always believed Luke would wait forever. What he forgot was that no matter how much hope a pup carried for his father, it would eventually fade with each passing disappointment.Six months later, Silvermoon Pack and the neutral territory reached a cooperative agreement to jointly develop a new healing potion. As Alpha, Silas pe

His mentor was a gentle witch who, after learning what he had been through, took especially good care of him.Little by little, life settled into a peaceful routine.Every morning, I would take Luke to school before heading to the healer's den. When work ended each evening, I would pick him up, bring him home, and cook the honey-roasted meat with roasted vegetables he liked the most.On weekends, we spent our time reading together in the old library, camping in the forest park, or enjoying movie nights while sharing strips of jerky.Luke gradually became cheerful again.
