“Dad?!” Autumn cried, his voice shaking as if a gun were pressed to his head. He stumbled backward, eyes wide with terror. “Is that really you? How’d you find me?”

The shadowy figure stepped closer, reaching for his arm. Autumn crouched down instinctively, bracing for the worst. How is this even possible? He thought bitterly. The first time I decided to live a little, and this happened?

But the hand that grabbed him was gentle, and the voice that followed was nothing like his father's booming baritone. It was smooth, almost soothing.

“Hey, I noticed you kept looking around, so I figured you were searching for the bathroom. Sorry if I scared you.”

Autumn squinted through the pulsing lights, his heart still hammering. When the stranger's face came into focus, relief washed over him. It was only the bartender from earlier.

“Oh, I'm sorry!” he rushed out, cheeks burning with embarrassment. “I thought you were—”

The bartender scoffed, pretending to look hurt. “It's cool. Though I must say, I'm highly disappointed.” A mischievous glint lit his eyes as he leaned in closer. “I mean… You make me wish I was your daddy.”

He whispered the last part with a smug grin. Autumn let out an awkward laugh and dropped his gaze to the floor, wishing he could evaporate on the spot. The bartender chuckled, clearly amused by his reaction.

“Bathroom's that way,” he said, pointing toward a corner near the thumping speakers.

Autumn managed a shy “Thank you” as he pulled himself up from the floor.

“You're welcome, cutie.” The bartender flashed one last wink before heading back downstairs.

Autumn glanced around quickly, relieved that no one had noticed the scene. Everyone else was too wrapped up in their own chaos, dancing, kissing, shouting over the music. He let out a long, happy sigh and made his way to the bathroom.

After relieving himself and washing his hands thoroughly, he stared at his reflection in the mirror. The alcohol had painted a soft flush across his cheeks, and the net top still clung to his frame in all the right ways. Hopefully Allison hasn't drunk herself silly yet, he thought with a smile. The memory of the bartender's flirty line replayed in his head, sending a little thrill through him. He couldn't wait to tell her he'd actually gotten hit on at his first party. The whole “Dad” mix-up? That could stay buried for another day.

Right now, he was tipsy, feeling cute, and by his own estimation, his hips had never looked better in these leather pants.

……

“Just great,” Julian sneered, flailing his hands dramatically. “All the girls at that end are whipped for Vegas, and the ones over there? I've helped deliver notes to him. What a bum party!”

His two best friends seemed completely unbothered by his theatrics. Remmy swirled the amber liquid in his glass with a lazy smirk. “There are other options, you know.”

Julian stuck his tongue out. “Well, I wish I could, but unfortunately I don't swing every which way like some people. What do you even call that?”

“Non-discriminating,” Remmy deadpanned, clearly over the conversation.

Vegas Clairemont sat beside them on the VIP couch, saying nothing. One hand rested in his pocket while the other toyed aggressively with the keychain on his belt. His bored expression hadn't changed all night.

Julian turned to him. “You haven't said anything tonight, Clairemont. Got something on your mind?”

Vegas shrugged. “You tell me.”

Julian pressed on, a hint of concern breaking through his usual sarcasm. “You're Vegas freaking Clairemont. Mila literally threw this party for you. I know how badly she's wanted to hang out with you, but you've barely given her any attention. You good, man?”

“I'm Vegas Clairemont,” he replied flatly, setting his drink down with a clink. “I do what I want, who I want, when I feel like it. Okay?”

The truth was simpler: he was bored. He had only shown up to keep up appearances. Mila's parties were legendary, and skipping one would spark rumors. But her clinginess grated on him. He needed something new. Something exciting.

Julian kept pushing. “By the way, you should really throw one soon. It's been forever. Everyone will lose their minds trying to get an invite. Your brother's not around, so the estate is basically yours. Why don't you—”

“Give it a rest already,” Remmy interrupted, his voice loud enough to draw glances from nearby dancers. “He's obviously got his mind elsewhere. Let's just drink.”

Julian muttered something under his breath and dragged Remmy toward a group of girls, leaving Vegas alone with his thoughts.

The party felt stale. Earlier, his father had shut down his request for the new limited-edition car, lecturing him about grades. Vegas hadn't stuck around to hear the rest. He needed a distraction.

Pushing off the couch, he wove through the crowd, stopping briefly to chat with a few guys about an upcoming island trip. The bass vibrated through his chest as he descended the stairs for a refill at the bar. Light drinking tonight, he decided, ordering a single whiskey.

He had just started weaving back through the sea of bodies, eyes scanning for interesting company near the entrance, when someone slammed into him. Whiskey splashed across his crisp designer shirt, soaking the expensive fabric.

“What the fuck!” Vegas yelled over the music, his temper flaring.

He lifted his gaze and froze.

The guy in front of him had wide, golden-brown eyes filled with panic, as he'd just seen a ghost. He looked frantic, apologetic, and completely unaware of who he'd just collided with. Vegas didn't recognize him at all, which was rare in these circles.

Before Vegas could speak, the stranger's hands were on his chest, desperately rubbing at the spreading stain.

“I'm so sorry,” Autumn pleaded, voice soft and helpless. “I honestly didn't see you there.”

He had been distracted, still replaying the bartender's flirty words and the two extra drinks he'd grabbed while searching for Allison. Now he was staring at this tall, imposing stranger whose shirt probably cost more than his entire scholarship stipend for a semester.

Vegas stood still, studying him. No recognition. No fawning. Just genuine panic. This kid really has no idea who I am.

The realization intrigued him more than it annoyed him.

“Autumn! Where've you been?” a slurred voice called from behind them.

Over the next couple of days, Autumn assumed his official position as Vegas' lap dog, much to the notice of about half the campus and much to his dismay. He would dart to stores, his faculty, and the cafe between classes, accidentally knocking himself down a few times. He barely had any time left between that and his schoolwork, now growing accustomed to passing out on his bed the moment he touched it when he finally shut off his laptop.Sometimes, Vegas would act as though he were a decent human being, even patting his head whenever he made one of his deliveries, causing the rumor to go wild. While other times, it seemed as though he was trying to mess him up more aggressively, eyes glaring as if Autumn had done something gravely wrong. On one occasion, Vegas had tossed a cup of bubble tea at his arm, grumbling about him mixing up the flavor, causing the brown liquid to spill all over his plain white shirt, the dribble hitting the floor comically.“That’s gotta stick,” someone yelled

It was supposed to have been like any other day. Just heading to class, his backpack slung over one arm while tucking the large sketchbook under his arm, a strand of hair or two slightly falling over his face.Today, however, had been different.Autumn stared out of the car at the students in little clusters at the front of the building, some checking out the boards pasted on the wall.He was one long breath away from possibly choking, the thought of gaining more attention putting him in fight or flight mode. But he didn't react all that much, not outwardly anyway.“Thanks for the ride,” he managed, sparing only a glance at Vegas, who'd been driving silently the whole time, which somehow seemed to make him more nervous.Even more annoying, he didn't even give a fucking reply.Autumn stepped out of the car quickly, walking past several people before deciding to stick to the corner after almost bumping into someone.By the time he got to the entrance, he suddenly turned back, his head d

Autumn lay awake on his new, unfamiliar bed, the silk sheets not bringing much comfort as he kept tossing around. The room was quiet except for the low hum of the AC.Sure, he wouldn’t say his tiny room with the old paint and loud bangs coming from some rooms on his floor had been heaven, but he longed for the feeling of independence he’d had until now.The new space just wasn’t his and would never be, so it was proving hard to make do with it.He ran a hand over his pajamas, trying to activate some feeling of actual warmth in the almost too-cool room.He looked around the dimly lit room, taking in the hours spent on arrangements. His books and sketchbooks were neatly laid out on the large desk, with a laptop beside them, along with a few building models at the end, resting against the wall. The closet hadn’t even been filled up to a tenth after folding and hanging all his clothes and other personal items, testing out the robes that’d been provided a bit too languidly. He couldn’t eve

Vegas was already seated at the dining table when Autumn came downstairs, Aaron heading toward the door as soon as he walked in.The air was thick with the rich, savory smell of grilled steak and roasted garlic. Warm, buttery bread sat in a basket, its golden crust still steaming slightly. The faint sweetness of caramelized onions and herbs mixed with the sharp tang of red wine that Vegas had already poured into two glasses. The plates looked expensive—heavy, white ceramic that clinked loudly as they were set on the table, the middle-aged chef also heading outwards.“Well, don’t just stand there,” Vegas grumbled, voice low and flat. He didn’t look up at first. He kept cutting into his steak, the knife sliding through the meat with a soft hiss, juices pooling dark and glossy on the plate.Autumn pulled out a chair, settling down stiffly. The wooden chair felt cold and hard. ‘I shouldn’t be here. I shouldn’t be sitting at his table like this is normal. Like I belong to him.’ The thought

The next day came too fast. Autumn stood outside his dorm with a single duffel bag, the strap digging into his shoulder, and a red traveling box on his right. The black car pulled up right on time. “2 sharp,” Vegas had texted earlier, along with a smug sticker, much to his annoyance. The driver took his bags without a word and opened the door. Autumn climbed in, heart heavy, the anguish of being situated right under his nose burning into his mind, filling him with all sorts of crazy thoughts. “What if he chokes me in my sleep?” he mumbled, looking at the front mirror in case the driver had heard him, hoping not to come off as deluded. He had packed only essentials: clothes, sketchbooks, a laptop, a charger, and a couple of personal items from his mom. Everything else hadn't seemed all that necessary, resolving to stop by for them whenever. The drive felt short compared to last time, his thoughts racing the whole time. When the elevator doors opened into the penthouse, Autumn step

Julian kept going, casual as ever. The conversation dragged on. He asked about Autumn’s favorite classes, what he thought of the clubs on campus, and even joked about how hard it must be to balance social life with the architecture workload.Autumn answered in short, awkward sentences, shifting on his feet, eyes darting to Vegas every few seconds.Vegas shot him a flat look. "Why are you talking so much?"Julian grinned. "Because one of us has to. You look like you're about three seconds away from committing a felony."Autumn almost choked. For a moment, the tension eased. Almost. Vegas didn't laugh. His gaze slid back to Autumn immediately, intense enough to make his stomach knot. Julian noticed."Oh." The grin slowly slipped from his face. "Oh, you two were in the middle of something.""We're leaving," Vegas said.Autumn stiffened.Julian raised an eyebrow. "That wasn't a suggestion, was it?""No.""Right."An awkward silence followed. Julian looked between them, clearly trying to f

Vegas stayed up all night, staring at the ceiling in his huge bedroom. He counted the little square designs in the recessed lighting, trying to push the image out of his head. The king-sized bed felt too big and empty. The silk sheets were cool but did nothing to calm him down.He had tried everyth

Autumn was panting by the time he reached his next class, having sprinted all the way from Vegas’s block. Sweat plastered his shirt to his back, and the sun had only made things worse—his face flushed, dripping.“Come on, Cedric, the professor’s already inside,” someone called. Autumn wiped his for

The lecture hall was buzzing with the usual end-of-class energy as Professor Harlan wrapped up his slides. The third-year Real Estate Development course was one of the few classes Vegas actually attended regularly, mostly because his father expected him to maintain a strong academic record in the f

“My driver’s going to drop you off,” Vegas announced as he rose from his seat. They had gone on for two more hours, poring over the design plans, Vegas asking sharp questions and Autumn answering as professionally as he could manage. The tension in the room had never really eased.Autumn got up qui
