JEREMY’S POV

The hospital room is too bright and too quiet. I stare at the ceiling for hours, counting the tiles and trying not to think about the bullet that almost killed me.

My shoulder throbs beneath the bandages earlier the doctors had given me pain meds which helped for a while but they also made everything seem fuzzy and distant.

Each time I close my eyes I'm taken back to that compound, the smoke, the gunfire, and everything.

I force myself to stay awake so that it stops.

ELRIC’S POV “ELRIC!!!!!” someone screams my name. I spin around just as the cemetery explodes into chaos. People scatter in every direction, black suits and dresses blurring as they run for cover. A woman near the front of the crowd goes down hard, clutching her arm. Another man stumbles and falls behind a headstone. The priest drops his book and freezes, eyes wide. “Get down!” I shout, but my voice is lost under the next round of gunfire. Victor is already beside me, pulling his weapon from under his jacket. Damien is a few steps ahead, one arm wrapped around Leah’s waist, the other shoving Emily toward a black van. “Behind the van!” Damien yells. “Now!” He practically throws both women behind the vehicle as bullets chew into the dirt around their feet. Emily screams. Leah doesn’t make a sound but her face is white as she pulls Emily lower against the tire. Victor grabs my arm and drags me sideways. We dive behind a thick oak tree just as a burst of automatic fire rips thr

ELRIC'S POV The day of the funeral finally came,it had rained heavily the night before but it had stopped sometime before dawn but dark clouds still covered the sky. I stand in front of the chapel in a black suit that feels too tight around my shoulders. I've been standing there for what feels like hours, my hands clasped in front of me, my eyes fixed on the coffin by the altar. The chapel is old and grand with high arched ceilings and stained glass windows that cast colored light across the wooden pews. The air smells like old wood and flowers and the faint hint of candle wax. There are white Roses are everywhere. They were my mother's favorite and my father always carried one with him ever since she died he'll always say This way she's with me with that silly smile he rarely showed. So it felt right to have it around. I had them arranged in tall vases all around the coffin. The coffin was polished mahogany that gleamed under the soft glow of the chandeliers. It was simpl

Each time I close my eyes I'm taken back to that compound, the smoke, the gunfire, and everything. I force myself to stay awake so that it stops. Suddenly the door opens and Detective Rayes walks in. He's a tall man with sharp eyes that have seen his men go through worse. “Hale.” He pulls up a chair and sits beside my bed. “How are you feeling?” “Like I got shot.” He gives me a small smile. “You look better than you did when they brought you in.” “I doubt that.” He pulls out a small notebook and flips through it. “I need to ask you some questions about what happened at the compound. Take your time.” I tell him everything I could remember le

ETHAN'S POV I sit outside my father's house in my car for a long time staring at the front door trying hard to find the right words to tell him I don't need his men anymore. Knowing my father it would be very difficult, the rain had stopped after a while. The house looms ahead of me, cold and empty and full of memories I'd rather forget. I should have just called him and told him over the phone but I know he won't have accepted that he would love to watch me squirm. I get out and walk to the door without knocking I walk in. I meet my father in his study just like always. He sat behind his desk reading something on his tablet. He doesn't look up when I enter. "Ethan," he says. "Back so soon? I wasn't expecting you this early." "Father." I stop in front of his desk. "I came to tell you I don't need the men anymore." He finally looks up at me his face unreadable. "Oh?" "Leah is back. She's safe so I don't need your men anymore." He sets the tablet down and leans back in his c

MARCUS’S POV I pull up to my foster mother’s house and sit in the car longer than I should, watching rain slide down the windshield. Cassain is becoming more unhinged than ever before while I sit here like everything is fine. I get out of the car and run to the door letting myself in with a key she had given me years ago. The house smells the same or smells of lavender, vanilla, and something slow-cooking in the oven. “Hey, Mom,” I call out when I don't see her in her usual spot in the rocking chair facing the window where she usually knits. I move deeper into the house to find her in the kitchen moving carefully with her walker, her grey hair pinned back and an apron tied neatly around her waist. “Marcus.” Her face lights up when she sees me. “You came.” “Of course I came, Mama.” I kiss her cheek. “How are you feeling?” She waves a hand. “Old and Achy. The usual. Sit. I made your favorite.” “Oh, you didn't have to” I protest but knowing her she would never listen despite h

ELRIC’S POVRain against the window is the first thing I hear when I wake up. For a few seconds, I don’t know where I am.Then everything comes back crashing on me and I remember: my father is dead. I have to plan his funeral. The safe house is quiet. I could hear someone moving around in the kitchen ... .dishes, the low murmur of a voice but I didn't go in. I can’t stand the look in their eyes. I didn't need their pity. My father was not really loved; he was a tyrant who met his end.I put on the clothes I wore yesterday not bothering that it smells of smoke and sweat and headed out. When I reached the front door Damien stepped out of the kitchen and I could see the exhaustion no matter how hard he tried to hide it.“Elric. Where are you going?” he asks“Funeral home. I need to make the arrangements.”“I’ll go with you,” he says turning to the couch to pick up a shirt.“No.” The word comes out sharper than I intend. “I have to do this myself.”“Elric—”“I said no.” I grab my jacket

Greasy hair slicked back, faded tattoo curling out from the collar of his worn polo, that crooked grin that used to make Mom laugh until it didn’t.He isn't meant to bug me for a while. I sent him money last night. It should have bought me more time but here he is.He slides into a corner booth like

  • Owned By My Best Friend's Father   Chapter Five

I step out of the shower, skin pruned and red from the hot water that turned cold too fast. The mirror’s fogged, but I don’t wipe it—I don’t want to see the wreck staring back. Faint bruises bloom along my collarbone like fingerprints he never meant to leave, nipples still tender from his mouth,

I wake up alone. The bed is massive and empty, sheets cool on Damien’s side. Sunlight stabs through the blinds straight into my eyes. My body hurts in ways I didn’t expect — thighs burning from clamping around his head, core tender and swollen from how many times he made me come, nipples sensitive

  • Owned By My Best Friend's Father   Chapter Three

I don’t know how long we stay on the couch like that—me curled in his lap, naked except for the slip dress bunched around my waist, him fully clothed but holding me like I’m the only thing that matters in the world. His hand strokes slow circles on my back, his lips brush my temple every few minute
