LEAH'S POV

We stayed in the diner for a while until the sun started to set outside casting golden light across the tables and the floor.

I don't want to leave. I don't want to go back to the safe house where everyone watches me as I might break. I don't want to face Damien, Elric, or any of it.

So I sit there, holding my cup of hot chocolate, watching the world move around me.

Emily is scrolling through her phone, occasionally showing me memes that make me laugh despite everything.

ETHAN'S POV I sit outside my father's house in my car for a long time staring at the front door trying hard to find the right words to tell him I don't need his men anymore. Knowing my father it would be very difficult, the rain had stopped after a while. The house looms ahead of me, cold and empty and full of memories I'd rather forget. I should have just called him and told him over the phone but I know he won't have accepted that he would love to watch me squirm. I get out and walk to the door without knocking I walk in. I meet my father in his study just like always. He sat behind his desk reading something on his tablet. He doesn't look up when I enter. "Ethan," he says. "Back so soon? I wasn't expecting you this early." "Father." I stop in front of his desk. "I came to tell you I don't need the men anymore." He finally looks up at me his face unreadable. "Oh?" "Leah is back. She's safe so I don't need your men anymore." He sets the tablet down and leans back in his c

MARCUS’S POV I pull up to my foster mother’s house and sit in the car longer than I should, watching rain slide down the windshield. Cassain is becoming more unhinged than ever before while I sit here like everything is fine. I get out of the car and run to the door letting myself in with a key she had given me years ago. The house smells the same or smells of lavender, vanilla, and something slow-cooking in the oven. “Hey, Mom,” I call out when I don't see her in her usual spot in the rocking chair facing the window where she usually knits. I move deeper into the house to find her in the kitchen moving carefully with her walker, her grey hair pinned back and an apron tied neatly around her waist. “Marcus.” Her face lights up when she sees me. “You came.” “Of course I came, Mama.” I kiss her cheek. “How are you feeling?” She waves a hand. “Old and Achy. The usual. Sit. I made your favorite.” “Oh, you didn't have to” I protest but knowing her she would never listen despite h

ELRIC’S POVRain against the window is the first thing I hear when I wake up. For a few seconds, I don’t know where I am.Then everything comes back crashing on me and I remember: my father is dead. I have to plan his funeral. The safe house is quiet. I could hear someone moving around in the kitchen ... .dishes, the low murmur of a voice but I didn't go in. I can’t stand the look in their eyes. I didn't need their pity. My father was not really loved; he was a tyrant who met his end.I put on the clothes I wore yesterday not bothering that it smells of smoke and sweat and headed out. When I reached the front door Damien stepped out of the kitchen and I could see the exhaustion no matter how hard he tried to hide it.“Elric. Where are you going?” he asks“Funeral home. I need to make the arrangements.”“I’ll go with you,” he says turning to the couch to pick up a shirt.“No.” The word comes out sharper than I intend. “I have to do this myself.”“Elric—”“I said no.” I grab my jacket

CASSIAN'S POV I sit alone in the dark penthouse with the city lights glittering below me and the silence pressing in from all sides as I stare at my phone and consider whether to make this call. I've been putting it off for hours knowing what I'm going to see and not wanting to see it but I need to. I need to see for myself exactly who failed me and how. I press call. It rings three times before a voice answers on the other end. "Mr. Evers?" "It's me," I say, my voice flat and cold. "I need the footage from the compound that night. The night Leah was gotten back. I want to see what happened." There's a pause on the other end. "Sir, the cameras were down during the escape. We already told you that. The system was compromised—" "I don't care what you told me." I cut him off. "I know someone has footage. Someone always has footage. Find it. Send it to me. Now." Another pause, longer this time and I can hear him breathing on the other end weighing his options. "I'll see what I ca

EMILY'S POV The mall was crowded and noisy when we got there. We weave through the crowds, bumping shoulders and laughing at things that aren't really that funny. The air smells like cinnamon pretzels, expensive perfume, and something sweet from the bakery on the second floor. "This store," I say, grabbing her arm and pulling her into a boutique. Immediately a woman comes up to us with a bright smile. She's dressed in all black and a measuring tape draped around her neck. "Hi, good afternoon. What can I do for you today?" she asks warmly. I glance at Leah who looks like she wants to disappear into the floor. Her eyes are darting around the store, taking in the expensive fabrics and the price tags she can probably see from across the room. "We're looking for something special," I say, smiling back at the saleswoman. "Something that makes her feel beautiful." The saleswoman's eyes land on Leah and her smile softens. "Of course. We have some lovely new arrivals that would sui

It almost feels like we are back to normal before my life comes crashing down.. Mira comes over to check on us, wiping her hands on her apron. "More hot chocolate?" she asks, already holding the pot. I laugh. "Mira, I think I've had enough." "Never enough," she says, pouring anyway. "You're too skinny. You need to eat more." Emily looks up from her phone and her face lights up. "Mira!" She jumps out of the booth and throws her arms around Mira, hugging her tight. "I've missed you so much," Emil
