(Aaron's Pov)

I had been washed clean of all the self-righteous, audacious ideas. “Nothing,” I screamed out immediately. “Nothing, Jack!”

“That's right,” he said, his voice smug but I didn't care. I had just had enough.

He let go of my head, letting my body drop fully to the wet floor. A moment later his weight was off me, but it was immediately replaced by the full weight of shame and embarrassment.

I saw his feet walk away, his cronies following behind. The cafeteria was still silent, the ground cold against my cheek.

I flinched away from the next hands I felt.

“It's me Aaron,” Kyle said quietly, “come on, let's go. Let's get you out of those wet clothes.”

Everything was blurry. Whether that was because of the water and tears mixture still in my eyes or because I just didn't want to see anyone and my brain granted me that small mercy, I didn't care. I just wanted everything to melt away.

Kyle helped my floppy body off the floor, which was no small feat for.being shorter than I was.  But we staggered out of there, straight to the nurse's office, my hand over his shoulder.

Up until he pushed the door open, I could feel the stares as we passed. Word travelled fast in William-Alfie, so was sure everyone knew what had happened by now

“What happened?” I heard Nurse Nina ask. Well, almost everyone.

I sighed, and slid my hand off Kyle's shoulders. I didn't want to talk. I just went behind the curtains where I knew some light, generic shirts and shorts were stored for when patients were going to stay in the infirmary. I was usually in and out of here anyway, a little hideaway with all the bullying.

I wanted to stay now again. I didn't want to go back out there, couldn't.

I could hear Kyle explaining what had happened as I stripped and changed. By the time I came back out, Nurse Nina was looking at me with a twinge of pity. Just like everyone would for days to come.

She showed me to a bed in the wide, empty space and left. Kyle sat with me quietly, until he too had to leave for classes.

Then I closed my eyes and had a nap.

It was hours later when I opened them. Thankfully, it was a dreamless sleep but I had a feeling that wouldn't stay the case later in my bed.

But for now, I could push it to the back of my mind. I could pretend in the empty room that I hadn't just been humiliated in a spectacular way, at least until I had to walk out of here to go home.

I sighed and leisurely turned my head, only to be met with the most horrific sight lying a few beds away from me. A scream jammed in my throat and I reared back.

Jack Pierce was here, glaring at me like he wanted his hands around my neck.

It felt like I was seeing the vengeful ghost of someone I'd killed. What the fuck was he doing here?

“You did this,” he growled.

I blinked at him, now very confused. I— What did I do?

Jack tried to stand, but before I could try and plan an escape, he made a horrible retching noise and dropped back down to the bed.

I watched him groan, clutching his stomach. What the fuck was wrong with him?

“You!” he growled again

“Me what?” I managed to ask, glancing at the door.

He laughed, a horrible cruel sound. “Don't even bother to deny it, I know you did this. Once I get out of here you're dead.”

I was beginning to get less and less afraid but more and more confused. “For fucks sake, did what?” I burst out.

His face was locked in a hard look and, for a moment, I thought he wouldn't respond. “Congratulatons, I don't know what you put in my food but it was fucking effective.”

What I put in his food…? “I don't know what you're talking about.”

He chuckled, a sound holding no amusement whatsoever. “You must think I'm stupid,” he muttered angrily and turned his head away from me.

I blinked at his figure, almost curled up into a ball. “Jack I didn't—”

“Shut up.”

“Jack—”

“Shut the fuck up.”

“No but really I didn't—”

“Nurse!”

Nurse Nina opened the door almost immediately. “What's going on?” She asked worriedly. “Did you need anything?”

“Aaron here is ready to go back to class,” Jack said firmly, leaving no room for debate. That was a command. “He's fine, and he's disturbing my fucking peace.”

Nurse Nina glanced from me to him and back at me again. She walked into the room, and looked me over.

Then, almost apologetically, she beckoned at me to stand up.

It was almost nine pm and I was still confused about what Jack was talking about.

As I slid into Kyle's car, I made a conscious effort to push it away. We were soon en route to Kyle's house, and to whatever this big gift was.

My parents had gotten me mostly what I wanted and I was very happy about that. A new laptop, shoes and the complete, hardback and signed series of one of my favourite fantasy authors, who coincidentally was also born today, so it was like a birthday gift for both of us.

Kyle had the windows down, blasting music that we'd both occasionally burst into song along. It was only about ten minutes of driving, when I still hadn't recognize the route that my brows furrowed.

I turned down the music a little, so he'd hear me when I asked, “where are we going?”

“What do you mean?” he asked, eyes forward.

I'd been going to his house since we became friends years ago so I knew all the routes, and this was not know of rhem. “What do you mean what do I mean? This isn't the way your house.”

“Who said we were going to my house?”

“What?”

Now, he glanced at me out of the corner of my eyes. “I never said that. You just assumed.”

I squinted at the smug look on his face. And he'd let me assume all day. Even when we'd left the house, I'd told my parents we were going to Kyle's and he hadn't said anything.

“So where are we going?’

“Oh come on Aaron, I can't tell you that,” he sighed. “We're almost there though.”

I blinked at him, getting curiouser and curiouser, but I didn't push any more. I leaned back into my seat and he increased the volume back to loud. I kept looking outside the window to try and guess where we were going.

No such luck.

We were driving for five minutes more before he started to slow. My mouth slowly dropped open as he started to turn.

Kyle slid into an empty spot, parking my seventeen year old virgin ass in the front of a strip club.

And a gay one too, judging  from the wildly suggestive neon image flashing beside the sign

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   THE DEAL

AARON'S POVAt first, I genuinely thought I had read it wrong.I read it again. Then one more time just to be absolutely sure my brain wasn't making things up.“We need to talk about Saturday night.”~ Mr Harrison. My stomach dropped. What the hell!?No, it can't be. It can't fucking be.Beside me, Kyle was talking to Chloe about one of our assignments, but his voice sounded distant. The text kept replaying itself in my head.Mr Harrison recognized me. Maybe he'd gone home and replayed the whole thing in his head until my face clicked."Aaron?" I heard Kyle call out.I looked up.Kyle was already staring at me."You okay?"I realized I'd been staring at my phone for an uncomfortable amount of time.I turned the screen away immediately. "Yeah."He raised an eyebrow.I immediately corrected myself. "No."Thankfully, Chloe wasn't paying attention to us. She was asking another classmate about an assignment. He leaned slightly closer. "Aaron."I swallowed, then I turned the phone around an

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   UNFINISHED NIGHT

AARON'S POVBy Monday morning, the entire school looked like it had been swallowed by the masquerade gala.Posters covered almost every available wall space. Pictures of gold masks, and elegant lettering announcing the date and venue. One giant banner hung above the entrance to the main building.DON'T FORGET TO BRING ALONG A DATE PARTNER.I stared at it for a second longer than necessary before looking away.Great.Exactly what I needed to see first thing in the morning.Kyle noticed immediately."You good?”I shoved my hands deeper into my pockets as we walked to class. "I don't know what to do."Kyle's expression softened immediately. He didn't joke this time. Not after the fact that I'd shown up at his house at nearly midnight looking like my entire life had collapsed. He already knew everything. He knew about Mr. Harrison. He knew about what happened at the club with Jay.He knew that I'd finally gathered enough courage to ask Jay to the gala. He knew Jay had said he would come i

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   STRANGE FEELING

JACK'S POVThe choir had just started singing when I stood up quietly from the back row and headed for the exit.I shoved my hands into the pockets of my hoodie and walked down the church steps slowly while families passed me on their way inside.A little girl ran past holding her father's hand. A woman walked by carrying a tray of pastries for whatever church thing was happening after service.I kept walking. My bike was parked beneath one of the trees near the edge of the lot.For a second, I just stood beside it. Then I pulled my helmet off the handlebar and stared at it.What the fuck was I doing here?Seriously. The same Jack Pierce who had never willingly stepped into a church a day in his life had just sat through almost an entire service because of Aaron Smithy.Definitely not for salvation. It was because of Aaron.Just Aaron.I rubbed a hand over my face.I hadn't even planned on talking to him. Hell, I'd deliberately sat far enough away that he wouldn't notice me if he look

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   HOMOSEXUALITY IS A SIN

AARON'S POVWe got to church a little earlier today. My mum liked arriving early enough to greet half the congregation before service started while my dad liked arriving early because, according to him, "the closer you sit to the front, the less likely you are to fall asleep during the sermon."Personally, I would've preferred staying in bed. Unfortunately, nobody in my house cared about my preferences on Sunday mornings.By the time we found our seats, the choir was already warming up near the altar while people continued filing into the building.I just sat there watching everyone. Then, I noticed Mr. Harrison. He sat three rows behind us. His wife sat beside him while his two kids quietly argued over something on a tablet between them.He looked calm, responsible and respectable.I couldn't wrap my head around it.He looked nothing like the man from last night. Nothing like the man with bloodshot eyes and whiskey on his breath who had grabbed my shirt and called my mother a bitch i

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   SUNDAY MORNING

AARON'S POVFor a long time, none of us said anything.Kyle just stood there while I cried into the front of his hoodie like some pathetic kid who'd lost a fight with the world.Eventually, my breathing started slowing down. The tears didn't exactly stop, but they weren't coming out like before.Kyle pulled back slightly and looked down at me. "Damn," he muttered quietly. "Whatever happened tonight really messed you up."A humorless laugh escaped me. "You have no idea."He studied my face for a few seconds before guiding me toward the couch. "Sit."I didn't argue. I dropped onto the cushions while Kyle disappeared into the kitchen and came back with a bottle of water.I took it from him with shaky hands. "Thanks."He sat beside me as silence stretched between us again. Then, he cleared his throat. “Did something happen at the club?”I looked up.Of course he knew. Kyle was the only person in my life who knew everything. The club.Jay.The truth about me being gay.I looked down at the

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   NOT A COWARD

JACK'S POVThe room felt strangely quiet after Aaron left. For a while, I just stood there staring at the closed door as if he might suddenly walk back in and tell me to go fuck myself.Honestly, I deserved it.I dragged a hand through my hair and exhaled heavily.Fuck.I really shouldn't have spoken to him like that. At the time, all I'd seen was the same thing I always see every single time I crossed paths with Aaron.Someone shoving him around. Someone saying whatever the hell they wanted to him. And Aaron standing there taking it, every single time.I remembered the bruises he'd shown up with that night. The ones he'd casually brushed off as school bullshit. But it was actually from Alex. If I didn't know better, I would have believed him.Aaron always allowed people to bully him anyhow they wanted. He hardly fights back.So when I saw that man with his hands all over his shirt while Aaron stood there looking like a deer trapped in headlights, something inside me had snapped.I th

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   THE ANNOUNCEMENT

AARON'S POVI tried focusing on the lecture but every five seconds, my brain kept replaying Vanessa kissing Jack right in front of the entire class like some dramatic scene from a teen movie nobody asked for.And annoyingly, the more I tried not to think about it, the more it kept bothering me.Whi

JACK’S POVMonday morning.I was halfway through stuffing books into my bag when my gaze landed on the small bunch of keys sitting on my drawer.Aaron’s keys. For a few seconds, I just stared at them silently. Then, annoyingly, my brain dragged me right back to Saturday night. The backyard behind V

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   TOO FAMILIAR

AARON’S POVThe entire ride home, one thought kept replaying in my head. Why the hell was I defending Jack Pierce? It didn’t make sense no matter how many times I replayed it. Jack and I weren’t friends. We barely tolerated each other. Actually, scratch that. Jack tolerated nobody.Yet the second
