Chapter 5: BLOOD ON FIFTH STREET

By the fourth day, the city Emily had grown up in no longer resembled anything human.

She stood at the edge of the loading bay, dressed in salvaged tactical gear that Marcus had scrounged from an army surplus store before the roads became impassable, and studied the map spread across a supply crate. Red circles marked the locations of the people she remembered — survivors who, in her old life, hadn't found safety until it was almost too late, if they found it at all.

"You want to go out there." Marcus didn't phrase it as a question. "Into that."

"There's a woman two miles from here with a six-year-old daughter, trapped in an apartment building surrounded by infected," Emily said, not looking up from the map. "There's an engineer holed up in a hardware store who's going to run out of food in two days. I'm not leaving them to die because it's inconvenient."

"It's not inconvenient. It's suicide."

"Not for me." Emily rolled the map and tucked it into her jacket. "I have advantages you don't understand yet, Marcus. Trust me on this."

He studied her for a long moment — the way he'd studied her in the warehouse doorway on the first day they met, weighing exactly how strange this woman truly was — and finally exhaled through his teeth. "Then I'm coming with you."

They took the truck as far as the wreckage on Fifth Street allowed, then continued on foot through streets littered with abandoned cars and worse. Emily's Threat Sense hummed at a low, constant frequency, a pressure at the edge of her mind that sharpened into alarm whenever infected drew close, giving her precious seconds to redirect their path around danger instead of into it.

They found Maria Santos exactly where Emily remembered — barricaded in a third-floor apartment, her daughter Lily curled silently in a closet, both of them three days without real food. Maria answered the door with a kitchen knife shaking in her grip until she saw the supplies Emily carried, and then she simply broke down crying, too exhausted for pride.

"I didn't think anyone was coming," Maria whispered, clutching Lily against her chest as Marcus checked the stairwell for threats.

"I told you I would," Emily said, and meant it with a certainty that had nothing to do with this conversation and everything to do with a promise she'd made to a version of Maria who had died alone in this same apartment, three weeks from now, in the timeline Emily had already lived and buried.

The engineer, a wiry man named David Okafor, was harder to convince — barricaded so thoroughly into the hardware store's back office that it took twenty minutes of careful talking through a reinforced door before he trusted them enough to open it. But once he saw the warehouse, once he understood what Emily was building, his exhaustion transformed into something like purpose.

"You've got a generator back there," David said, running his hands over the equipment Marcus had scavenged, already sketching modifications in his head. "I can rig solar backup within a week if you get me the panels."

"Consider it done," Emily said, and the system chimed its quiet approval in the back of her mind.

[Mission Complete: Recruit high-value survivor — David Okafor, Engineer.]

[Reward: Blueprint unlocked — Solar Power Grid (Basic).]

But it was on the walk back, cutting through an alley to avoid a horde gathering near the main road, that Emily's Threat Sense screamed a warning unlike anything she'd felt before — not the low hum of ordinary infected, but a sharp, jagged spike that made her stomach drop.

"Down!" she shouted, shoving Maria and Lily behind an overturned dumpster half a second before something crashed through the alley wall behind them.

It had once been a man. Now it stood nearly seven feet tall, its skin stretched taut and gray over a frame that had grown too large for its own joints, muscles bulging in ways that defied anatomy. Its eyes weren't the clouded white of ordinary infected — they burned a dull, malevolent red, and when it turned toward them, Emily felt every instinct she possessed scream to run.

A mutant. Not just infected — evolved.

She remembered these from her old life, though not this early. In the timeline she'd already lived through, the mutations hadn't started appearing until nearly two months into the outbreak. This one was weeks ahead of schedule, and the system's silence on the matter told her something important: whatever was happening to this virus, it was accelerating faster than even her borrowed memories could predict.

"Marcus, the girls, get them out of here," Emily said, drawing the enhanced combat knife with hands that had gone perfectly steady despite the roaring in her ears.

"Emily, that thing will tear you apart—"

"Go!"

He hesitated only a second before grabbing Maria's arm and hauling her and Lily toward the alley's far exit. The mutant's red eyes tracked the movement, and Emily threw a chunk of broken brick hard against the dumpster beside her, drawing its attention back before it could follow.

It charged.

Emily's system flared to life, the panel snapping into her vision even as she dove sideways, the mutant's fist crashing into the brick wall where she'd stood a heartbeat earlier, concrete exploding outward in a spray of dust and debris.

[Threat Sense Lv.1: Insufficient data on target. Combat recommendation: Evasion.]

Evasion wasn't an option in an alley this narrow. Emily rolled to her feet, knife raised, and watched the mutant turn with terrifying speed for something so large, its clawed hand already swinging toward her throat.

She threw herself backward, felt the claws whistle past close enough to tear fabric from her jacket, and drove the enhanced knife into the thing's exposed side with every ounce of strength she had. The blade sank deep — deeper than it should have, the "never dulls" enchantment biting through flesh that should have been impossibly tough — and the mutant howled, a sound too human to be anything but horrifying.

It staggered, and Emily didn't waste the opening. She yanked the knife free and drove it upward into the base of its skull, twisting hard the way three months of survival in her old life had taught her, and the massive body finally collapsed, twitching once before going still.

Emily stood over it, chest heaving, blood — hers and its — soaking through her sleeve, and the system chimed with an urgency it hadn't shown before.

[Unprecedented Achievement: First Mutant Elimination.]

[Reward: Class Advancement available — Host may now select a specialization path.]

[Warning: Virus mutation rate exceeds initial projections. Recommend accelerated preparation.]

Emily wiped the blade clean on the creature's ruined clothing, hands still trembling from adrenaline, and looked down at the thing that used to be a person. If mutations were already appearing this early, then everything she remembered — every certainty she'd built her plans around — was no longer entirely reliable.

The apocalypse she'd already survived once was evolving into something new. Something worse.

And somewhere out there, she realized with a cold, creeping certainty, someone or something was making it that way on purpose.

Two weeks after the outbreak, the warehouse on Miller Road had stopped looking like an abandoned building and started looking like something else entirely — a fortress, small but growing, humming with the quiet industry of people who had decided, together, that they were going to live.David had rigged the solar panels within his promised week, giving them power that didn't depend on a generator's dwindling fuel supply. Sarah had converted a side office into a functioning medical bay, sparse but clean, and had already treated two survivors Emily brought in from the wreckage of the city beyond their walls. Maria organized the growing supply stores with an efficiency that made even Marcus raise his eyebrows, and Lily, resilient in the particular way only children seemed able to manage, had started drawing pictures of the warehouse on scraps of cardboard, labeling it HOME in careful six-year-old letters.Fourteen people now called the warehouse home, each one someone Emily remembered los

The outbreak began exactly the way Emily remembered it — and knowing didn't make it any easier to watch. It started as a story on the morning news, buried beneath weather and traffic: a "containment incident" at the Halloway Research Campus on the edge of the city, officials urging calm, promising the situation was under control. Emily had heard those same false assurances once before, in a life that no longer technically existed, and she knew exactly how many hours remained before the word "contained" became a lie too large to hide."We're moving everyone to the warehouse. Today," she told Claire over breakfast, not touching her own coffee.Claire frowned at the television, at the reporter's carefully neutral expression. "Em, it's probably nothing. A chemical leak, maybe—""Today," Emily repeated, and something in her voice made her sister set down the spoon without arguing further.By noon, Emily had called in every favor and cashed every remaining bit of trust she'd built over the

The warehouse on Miller Road had been abandoned for six years, ever since the textile company that owned it went bankrupt. Emily remembered it from her old life too — remembered how, three weeks into the apocalypse, a group of survivors had tried to fort up here and been overrun within days because the building had too many entrances and no real defenses. She wasn't going to make that mistake. She stood in the empty loading bay, dust motes swirling in the afternoon light, and opened the system panel with a thought.[Current Mission: Establish a secure base before Day 30.][Suggestion: Host may use Basic Appraisal to assess structural integrity and defensibility.]The blue shimmer swept across the walls, the roof, the rusted loading doors, painting a picture only she could see.[Structure: Reinforced concrete frame. Emily didn't move for a long time. She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at her own hands, flexing fingers that had, in another life, been torn apart by teeth. They were whole. Unmarked. Steady."System," she said out loud, feeling ridiculous the moment the word left her mouth.A translucent blue panel unfolded in front of her eyes, visible to her alone, humming faintly with light.[Host: Emily Carter][Level: 0][Title: None][Storage Space: 1 cubic meter — Locked. Unlocks upon first mission completion.][Skills: None][Current Mission: Survive the next 30 days and prepare for the coming catastrophe.]She read it twice, then a third time, her pulse climbing. It wasn't a dream. She had died — she remembered the exact, brutal weight of dying — and now she had a month, a system, and a memory of everything that was coming. The apocalypse would begin in thirty days. She remembered the date burned into her mind like a scar: the outbreak started downtown, at the old research campus on the

  • REBORN BEFORE THE APOCALYPSE: MY SSS-LEVEL SURVIVAL SYSTEM   Chapter 1: THE NIGHT SHE DIED

The city was dying, and so was Emily Carter. Blood soaked through her jacket, warm and sticky against the cold night air. She staggered through the alley behind what used to be a grocery store, her hand pressed hard against the gash on her side. Somewhere behind her, the moans of the infected rose and fell like a tide that never stopped coming in. Three months. That was how long the world had been like this. Three months since the virus tore through every city on earth and turned neighbors into monsters. Three months of scavenging, hiding, running. Three months of believing that if she just held on, if she just stayed close to Jason, they would make it through together. She had been wrong. "Jason!" Her voice cracked as she rounded the corner, praying he was still where she'd left him, guarding the truck loaded with everything they had gathered. Canned food. Medicine. Two crates of ammunition she had bled for, literally, prying them out of a collapsed pharmacy while a horde clawed
