ETHAN

My father raised a brow slightly and quickly turned his head away as if to hide the delight I'd already seen in his eyes.

"Why do you want to take over? Are you truly ready?" My mother promptly asked. Her expression still showed her distress.

I smiled softly. "I'm ready, mum. I want to take over and become the chairman." I'd already thought it over.

Though the journey wouldn't be easy and it would go against my lazy principles, it was alright.

For my goal, anything could be changed—even my lazy habits.

My dad sat beside me and patted my shoulder even more firmly. "Good. When do you want to take over? Today?"

"Hm. Shall we go together later?"

He nodded. "Yes. Dress up. Daddy will show you around the company and also explain the things you need to know..." He paused and rubbed his brows.

"But you probably won't be able to take over anytime soon." His tone was low. "Those old fogies won't let you."

I inhaled gently. "I know, Dad." That was expected. "I'm inexperienced and can't lead the group yet." I understood that well enough.

"So, let's do it this way. I will start from a relatively easier position and work my way up." I suggested.

Although this would slow down my plans, it didn't matter too much. I could always work it out.

"After proving my worth and gaining the approval of everyone in the group. I will be able to take over as the chairman. That would also help me learn more about the various chains." I explained sincerely.

A smile formed on my father's face. He nodded with pride and joy on his handsome face. "It's okay. Dad will support you." He assured and stood up.

"Prepare early. We leave in an hour."

"Mum will go to the kitchen to prepare something for you." My mum promised as she stood up to leave.

I watched the two leave the room. The smile on my face faltered slightly, and a hint of melancholy appeared in my eyes.

A weary smile escaped my lips, and I closed my eyes weakly.

I needed another plan to get closer to Leander.

Taking over the group would definitely help in the long run, but it was useless at the moment.

Time wouldn't wait for me.

I forced my body up from the bed and walked toward the bathroom, where I had a short but refreshing bath.

The drowsiness I felt before the bath disappeared after the bath, and I was able to dress quickly before going downstairs for breakfast.

My mother was almost done. With the help of the various cooking technologies she got at home, cooking became a lot easier.

In a few more minutes, she arranged the dining table and called my dad down to eat with us.

The breakfast was relatively calm, yet it filled the void in my heart.

It had been so long since I last ate so peacefully with my parents. I had been so devoted to my marriage with Vesper that I hardly visited home.

Especially when my parents kept disturbing me to take over the group. I found it too troublesome and stayed away from them because of that.

Once again, I wondered why they refused to give birth to another child...

I could never find myself worthy of their love.

By the time I snapped out of my thoughts, the meals before me had been eaten clean, and only when I touched my belly did I realize I had been the one who finished it all.

I rubbed my nose with an awkward smile and stood up, signaling for my dad to also stand.

The older man chuckled. He kissed his wife's forehead and walked out of the house with me.

"Let's take my car." He suggested.

I wasn't planning to take mine either. Rather, I wasn't in the mood to drive.

I agreed.

The drive to the company was as noisy as it could be.

My father wouldn't stop telling me about the difficulties he went through when he took over the group back then.

He talked about his weaknesses and strengths. He talked about how strict his father was.

He even talked about his plan to retire and explore the world with his wife after I take over the company.

My ears ached from listening to it all.

"Dad, why don't you and Mum give birth to another child? I'm in my early twenties already." I suddenly asked.

It was the same question I'd asked when I was 15, and they replied that I was too young and they weren't done spoiling me yet.

Now, I was old and even... married.

My father's brows creased, and his expression turned unpleasant. "You silly child. Do you want a brother who would fight and hate you over our properties?"

"You don't know what I went through due to my brothers when I took over, do you?"

"Siblings are nice only when there's no inheritance involved. When there is, it's hard to find a truly loving brother or sister. Son," He tapped on my temple.

"You don't want to experience the things I did. It's awful."

The car slowly stopped.

Looking out, I realized we were already at our destination.

The words at the tip of my tongue slipped back into my stomach, and I opened the door, getting out.

So, the reason my parents hadn't tried giving birth to another child was that they were scared of causing me trouble?

That sounded so silly. It was so ridiculous that my heart ached terribly and my eyes stung again.

They sacrificed so much for me, yet I was blind to it all.

Even a second chance wouldn't justify the fact that I had died once. It wouldn't justify the sufferings they went through after my death...

"Dad, don't worry, this time, I'll certainly live long." This was my solemn promise to them.

ETHANGuess? Whoever wanted to guess could go ahead and do it. I wasn't ready for that. I smiled at my mum and gestured for her to start eating. Together, we picked up our cutlery and dug into the food.I hadn't eaten anything before leaving home in the morning and had been so troubled all morning. My stomach began to growl after leaving my mother's embrace. My father's anger grew when he realized no one was answering him. He knocked on the table, forcefully attracting my attention. "Didn't you say you want to take over the company?" I had a bad feeling. "Great. I've hired some professionals. They are business experts and can work as your assistants while you navigate the..." "Pause. Pause." I raised my hand, eyes flickering with fear as I looked at my old man. "I knew it!" Whenever he said the word "guess," it was never a good thing, and that was why I hadn't bothered to reply to him earlier. "Who needs professionals? I'm still so young and can fully focus on learning from

ETHAN"Oh my, why are you crying like a little child?" My mother sounded distressed as she reached out to wipe my tears. I bent closer, giving her the chance. My father snorted. "He's always a child." My lips pressed into a thin line. Disdain showed in my eyes as I rolled my eyes at him. "Says someone whose eyes are red, too." He flared up, waving the roses at me. He bared his teeth like they were fangs. "Who's crying? I'm a grown-ass adult. Why would I cry?" Snorting through the tears, "I didn't say you are crying, though. I only said your eyes are red." I pointed out. He stiffened. Awkwardly, he turned his head away and refused to say another word. I couldn't help but laugh again. My mother patted my cheek, wiping away the tears that fell while laughing. She looked helpless. "Stop teasing your father, little one." I couldn't accept it. "Why should I? He's so easy to tease." My mother chuckled. My father glared at me. "I'm taking my money bouquet away." I shrugged. "Who

ETHAN My mood remained complicated even as I walked toward my father's office. My pinkie kept rubbing against my thumb, a sign of nervousness that I was unable to keep down. Different thoughts came to mind, but the most feasible of them all was telling Leander that I couldn't come tonight. Then, what about the countdown? My fertile period could last for six or more days. Would I continue putting him off for those days? What if he changed his mind? What would I do then?But... was I really ready to carry a child now? I touched my belly. My mood turned melancholic, and my eyes reddened slightly. Carrying a child really wasn't the issue, but what would keep me beside Leander after the child had been born? Moreover, could I really protect my child this time around? For a heartbeat, I felt like I had been thrown back to that moment. When Nick tripped me, I fell on my belly. The momentary double heartbeat... was it my child's? Or was it nothing more than an illusion? I closed my ey

ETHANI walked down the stairs, taking in the decorations in the room. Our wedding album had even been hung up, finally making the house look like a newlywed's house. My steps echoed on the stairs, deliberate and slow, as if I were stepping on someone's heart. But Vesper continued kneeling. The slow sound of music filled the background, lending the moment a touch of romance and celebration. I felt the urge to laugh. Stepping on the last stairs, I finally stopped, and my gaze settled on him. Vesper's eyes wavered, and he slowly shifted forward. He didn't stand. Instead, he moved with his knees; his face was solemn, guilt written across his forehead. My lips twitched. I really wanted to curse. Suppressing the anger in my heart, I stared at him, waiting for his next words and actions. Vesper knelt before me and raised the flowers. "Baby, I knew I fucked up last night. I shouldn't have listened to Nick, I shouldn't have talked to you that way, and I shouldn't have forgotten your

ETHAN"What did he say?" I asked again, still enjoying the tiramisu. I really couldn't drop it for the life of me. Food or nothing. Vesper stared at me. His eyes regained their earlier conviction, and the anger seemed to return. "Nick is your friend. Even if he did something wrong to you. Do you have to ruin his dream this way?" "You know how much he loves filming, and you decided to take his role away. Why? You were never this ruthless, Ethan." He rubbed his forehead, and disappointment flashed across his eyes. "You've changed." He added. My lips pursed. Reaching out, I traced the slap marks on my cheek, and sadness flickered through my eyes. The rims of my eyes reddened. "He said I took his role away?" My voice was hoarse. "Why don't you ask if I have any right to decide anything in that setting?" "Aren't you the investor?" I laughed dryly. "Investor? Have I ever done anything without telling you?" Well, I have. But that was a matter for another day. "Invest in his drama?

  • REBORN TO WIN: Father-in-law, Keep Me Alive.    CHAPTER 41: BIRTHDAY

ETHAN"Where are you, Ethan?" Hearing that term, my brows creased. I knew Vesper was angry. Funny. It was to be expected. After what happened to his lover, he would certainly want to confront me. But wasn't this what I wanted? If things didn't go this way, then I would have gotten that slap for nothing. I remained quiet. "Can't talk? Ethan? Are you even listening to me?" "I am. I'm on my way to the office." My voice was a little drawled out, a sign that I was exhausted and wasn't in the mood for a long conversation. "On your way? Tell me where you are, and I'll come pick you up.""Pick me up?" "Yes." I glanced at Lyn, whose eyes were fixed on the road, and I closed my eyes. "Okay." I took a picture of the building next to the road and sent it to him. "I'll wait for you." The call ended. A low sigh escaped my lips. "Mr Ethan, are you leaving?" "I'm sorry, but I think I heard you say you will wait for someone." "Hm. Vesper is coming to pick me up." Lyn smiled softly. It

ETHAN As the thoughts ran through my mind, my body relaxed, and even the strength I'd mustered up in my arms disappeared. My lips parted, letting out low moans as Leander's fingers moved around my body. Guilt welled up in my chest. I knew Leander was drugged, and he probably had no idea what he

His tone was loud and filled with anger. Neil frowned and tried to free himself. "Mr Vesper, it was Mr

ETHANI watched as Vesper entered the dining room with a small smile on his face. He had changed into long pants and a black top. It was casual wear that looked perfect on his tall figure. He approached and took my hand in his. "You don't need to change. Let's go." My brows creased. I glanced

ETHAN Being looked at by Vesper made me feel uncomfortable from within, and without a word, I stepped past him. A snort escaped me.
