Chapter 1 : The Girl Who Shouldn’t Matter

last update publish date: 2026-04-17 06:36:31

Lena Moore had mastered the art of being invisible.

In a place like the Royal Crest Hotel, invisibility wasn’t just survival — it was protection.

She adjusted the sleeves of her faded uniform as she pushed the cleaning cart through the marble corridor. Everything around her sparkled — golden lights, crystal chandeliers, polished floors that reflected luxury like a mirror.

A world she would never belong to.

A world that would never notice her.

“Room 1408,” her supervisor had said earlier. “VIP guest. Be careful. Don’t touch anything you don’t have to.”

Lena had only nodded.

She never asked questions.

Questions were for people who had options.

She stopped in front of the door, took a steady breath, and knocked once.

No answer.

She swiped the key card and entered.

The smell hit her first.

Alcohol. Expensive perfume. And chaos disguised as luxury.

The room looked like a storm had passed through it — clothes scattered across the floor, champagne bottles half-empty, a shattered glass near the window.

Rich people never cleaned up their destruction.

They simply left it for others.

Lena tightened her grip on her cart and stepped inside.

That was when she saw it.

A black leather wallet lying casually on the bed.

She paused.

It looked expensive enough to feed her for months.

For a second — just a second — she hesitated.

Then she walked over and picked it up.

Inside were stacks of cash, credit cards, and identification.

And one name that made her freeze completely.

ZAYDEN VALE.

Even she knew that name.

The reckless celebrity.

Actor. Billionaire heir. Media disaster. A man who lived like consequences didn’t exist.

Lena slowly closed the wallet.

Her voice came out barely above a whisper.

“I don’t take what isn’t mine.”

She placed it exactly where she found it.

And continued cleaning.

Unaware that the owner of that name was still inside the room.

The bathroom door opened suddenly.

Lena froze.

Slow footsteps.

Then a voice — deep, rough, still carrying sleep and alcohol.

“Who the hell are you?”

She turned.

And everything stopped.

He leaned against the doorway like the world belonged to him.

Tall. Sharp jawline. Dark messy hair. Expensive shirt half-unbuttoned. Eyes half-lidded but still sharp enough to cut through silence.

Zayden Vale.

Even in a half-drunk state, he looked unreal.

And dangerous.

“I’m the cleaner,” Lena said quickly, lowering her gaze.

His eyes moved over her slowly.

Not rushed.

Not polite.

Measuring.

Then he smirked.

“You’re cute,” he said lazily. “Did they send you early for entertainment?”

Lena stiffened. “I’m here to clean the room, sir.”

“Sir?” he repeated like it amused him. “Nobody calls me that.”

He stepped forward.

Lena stepped back.

Until her back hit the table.

Too close.

Her heartbeat jumped.

Zayden noticed.

Everything about her reaction was different from what he was used to.

No flirting.

No pretending.

No hunger for his attention.

Just fear… and restraint.

It unsettled him more than it should have.

“What’s your name?” he asked.

“…Lena.”

He repeated it slowly.

Like tasting it.

“Lena,” he said. “You don’t look like someone who belongs in my world.”

“I work here.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Zayden reached into his pocket and pulled out a stack of cash, dropping it on the table.

“For your time,” he said.

Lena frowned immediately. “I don’t need extra payment.”

That made him pause.

“No one refuses me,” he said quietly.

Lena finally looked up.

Her voice was steady.

“I just did.”

Something shifted in his expression.

Confusion.

Then irritation.

Then something he couldn’t explain.

Interest.

“You’re going to be a problem,” he murmured.

Lena lowered her gaze again. “I just want to finish my work.”

But Zayden wasn’t listening anymore.

Because for the first time in a long time…

Someone wasn’t reacting to him the way the world always did.

And that alone made her unforgettable.

Hours passed.

Lena worked silently, careful, precise, avoiding him as much as possible.

Zayden stayed near the balcony, pretending to scroll through his phone, but his attention kept drifting back to her.

It annoyed him.

He wasn’t supposed to notice cleaners.

He wasn’t supposed to care.

But he did.

When Lena bent to pick up broken glass, his voice broke the silence.

“Careful.”

She paused.

Looked up.

Their eyes met again.

And something unspoken passed between them — a tension neither of them understood.

Zayden stepped forward without thinking.

Lena immediately stepped back.

“I’m done here,” she said quickly.

She grabbed her cart.

And left.

Fast.

Without looking back.

Zayden didn’t move.

He just stood there.

Still.

Staring at the door she disappeared through.

For the first time in his life…

He felt something dangerously close to curiosity.

And he hated how much it stayed with him.

That night, Zayden Vale didn’t sleep.

And Lena Moore had no idea…

That her life had already started changing inside Room 1408.
