Chapter 1

Penulis: Redleaves
The comments scrolled wildly across my vision.

[Huge plot twist. She actually rejected the proposal?]

[Don't tell me she found the diary the male lead hid in the cabinet?]

[You call that a diary? That's a love letter to the heroine!]

It seemed every answer was in that diary.

Back at the Lucchese estate, I all but ran into the study and found the diary.

What was written inside turned me cold all over.

So Viviana was the woman Victor had wanted and never had.

She was the daughter of the Greco Family's Don.

Every page poured out Victor's love for Viviana.

So he had taken her to the safe house he had promised to share with no one but me.

So, to help her win the fight to become the Greco heir, he had been willing to sacrifice his own Family's interests and hand over his most important asset, the South American route.

So even the favor he swore belonged to me alone had never been mine.

The diary laid bare the truth and tore open a bloody wound.

I couldn't read any more. Slowly, I closed it.

It felt like a piece had been carved out of my chest, the pain so sharp I could barely breathe.

Only when a drop of blood fell on the cover did I realize I had long since bitten through my lip.

The comments drifted past again.

[The male lead has no choice. The villainess is gonna hurt the heroine down the line.]

[Hahaha, he has been acting for three years and the villainess never caught on.]

I bolted out of the Lucchese estate like I was fleeing for my life.

I wandered the streets aimlessly. I don't know how long I walked before, utterly spent, I finally found a bench and sat down.

It began to rain.

The rain wrapped around all of New York like strips of gray bandage.

I didn't take cover.

I don't know how much time passed before the rain above me suddenly stopped.

I slowly looked up.

Victor stood in front of me holding an umbrella, his white shirt soaked through, water dripping from the loose strands of hair on his forehead.

His breathing was ragged, like he had run the whole way to find me.

Seeing me safe and sound, his tensed shoulders finally eased, but his voice was still thick with the fear of what might have happened.

"I finally found you. Do you have any idea how long I've been looking?"

I stared blankly at Victor.

His acting was so flawless I couldn't spot a single crack in it.

He crouched in front of me and lifted a hand to wipe the rain from my face.

I flinched away on instinct.

Victor froze, then reached out anyway, his stiff hand brushing my cheek and my forehead.

"Are you sick? Running a fever, out of it? Whatever it is, come home with me first."

He pushed the umbrella into my hands and swept me up into his arms.

That familiar cold, crisp cologne filled my nose.

I curled up against his chest and let everything between us churn through my mind.

But the more I thought, the more it hurt.

Back at the estate, he set me down on the couch with great care and took a big towel to dry my hair.

I bit down on my lower lip and tugged at the hem of his shirt.

"Victor, did you ever love me?"

The diary had spelled it out clearly: the system wouldn't allow Victor to marry Viviana.

And the only reason Victor kept me around was to keep an eye on me.

He was afraid I would hurt Viviana.

But I really wanted to know whether, in these ten years, he had ever loved me.

Even for a single fleeting moment.

Victor's hands stilled, his knuckles tightening for just an instant.

The next second, he gave a faint smile. "You're the one who turned down the proposal today, aren't you? Shouldn't I be the one asking you that?"

He hadn't answered me directly.

Pain shot through me, sharp and sudden.

[LMAO. The villainess is still dreaming.]

[Sure, the male lead is a prince, but the villainess is no Cinderella.]

Right. It was all a dream, and it was time to wake up.

I let go of his shirt and forced out a smile.

"Thank you for saving me back then. I hope you'll be happy."

Victor winked at me, his smile beautiful. "As long as you're by my side, I'll be happy."

"Victor, are you hiding something from me?"

Victor's body gave a small tremor, and he lowered his eyes.

"No." He worked to force a smile. "How could I ever bear to lie to you? I'll have someone draw you a bath."

Watching Victor's retreating back, my eyes stung.

He had deceived me for ten years, and yet I couldn't bring myself to hate him.

He didn't love me, but he had truly been good to me.

I froze for a split second. The sea wind stilled for a moment.Victor lifted his head, the red veins in his eyes spreading like a web of cracks."You think there's no way out because you haven't learned to do whatever it takes."His voice shook, but it came faster and faster."The system is erasing you because you gave up the mission. So what if—"He stopped. As if, once the next words were out, there would be no turning back.Countdown: 27 seconds."What if..."Victor stared at me, one word at a time."What if the system rules that the target of the mission no longer exists?"He drew the gun at his waist and held it out to me. "Kill me."For a second, the air seemed to empty out.I stepped back without meaning to. "You're insane, Victor!"He gave a small smile."I made a mistake I can never undo. I have a debt to pay.""If you die, I'll follow you into death for certain. So I'd rather use my life to save yours."Countdown: 17 seconds.I shook my head hard. "No! This isn't the fate the

Looking out at the sea, Victor began to explain. His voice was like an old recording, threaded with the hiss and crackle of aging machinery. Some words dropped away entirely, like pages that had been soaked in water."You only read the first half. It's true, I came to you with a lie.""After I awakened, I knew I could never have Viviana, and that you would hurt her someday.""And most of all, I couldn't change any of it.""Why not?" I said with a cold laugh. "A Don like you could have someone taken out without lifting a finger.""It seems you don't know the system's other rule."Victor looked at me. "You and Viviana are bound together. If you die, she dies, and the same the other way around."I froze.I had never imagined this was the reason."To protect Viviana, my only choice was to get close to you, to watch you.""I admit that was what I set out to do. Until a year ago..."His eyes reddened, tears glinting at the corners. "I realized I had fallen in love with you.""I wrote it in t

I stood at the end of the beach, watching the seagulls soar over the water. The blood-red countdown ticked coldly in front of me: 17 minutes, 27 seconds. The setting sun was sinking slowly into the horizon. It wasn't only Sicily's sunset. It was mine too.The next second, footsteps came from behind me.Heavy. Urgent.Like someone had run all the way from the end of the world.I didn't turn. I knew who it was.He had found me after all. Victor.Victor stopped ten steps away and came no closer. As if one wrong step would lose me for good. When he spoke, his voice was hoarse. "S-Scarlett..."I glanced at him and said nothing. His throat bobbed. "Come home with me."I smiled. "Victor, leave me be."I looked straight into his eyes. "It's the last thing you can do for me."He faltered, then walked over and sat down beside me.I stood and turned to leave."Scarlett, I know you read my diary."My steps paused, then I kept walking."But I'm certain you didn't read all of it."My steps stopped.

[Victor's POV]When the plane landed in Sicily, day was just breaking.Victor practically flew down the stairs. He had never been in such a hurry, and never been so afraid. The car raced toward the south shore.Beside him, the advisor kept refreshing Scarlett's location on the tracker."The last signal was at a seaside guesthouse, but that was already five hours ago.""Five hours." Victor repeated it, then added, "She wouldn't leave me."But the next second, even he didn't believe it.Before the car had fully stopped outside the guesthouse, Victor had already jumped out.He kicked the door open. The old owner stumbled back a step in fright."This girl, is she still here? Is she here?"Victor held up a photo of Scarlett, all but shouting the question. The old woman frowned. "She checked out.""When?""Three hours ago."A roar filled Victor's head, and his mind went blank.Like something had been pulled out of his body.He forced himself to stay calm."Did she say where she was going?"T

[Victor's POV]One day earlier.Victor stood in the study, gulping down whiskey. He had made thirty-seven calls in a row.Every one unanswered. The advisor knocked softly, lowered his head, and said timidly,"All our soldiers are out searching. No sign of the Donna yet."Victor didn't answer. He just stared at his phone screen. In that moment, he suddenly realized Scarlett wasn't "angry," and she wasn't giving him the silent treatment. She was disappearing.Slipping out of his world, little by little. He raised a hand and pressed the space between his brows. "Keep looking.""And..." the advisor added carefully, "the Donna's medical report just came in.""Why am I only hearing this now?" Victor said coldly. "Why did it take so long?""The hospital kept citing privacy. I had to pull three layers of favors just to get it...""Enough. Go, keep searching for her."Victor cut the advisor off and took the copy of the medical report.Unable to reach Scarlett, he had clung to one last thread of

I was woken by the gentle sunlight on my face. Before I even opened my eyes, the blood-red countdown was already floating in front of me.10 hours, 17 minutes. The numbers ticked quietly, like a dull blade pressed between my breaths.Yet all at once my heart went calm.Every second from here was so precious that I had no time left for grief. After washing up, I took a small booklet from the very bottom of my suitcase. The cover was worn now.It was the honeymoon plan Victor and I had made together three years ago.The first page: [Go to Sicily.]I picked up a pen and drew a light check mark beside it.The second page was the seaside church; the third was watching the Mediterranean sunset together...I turned through it page by page, like flipping through a memory already dead but still warm. The last page.[Marry Victor.]I looked at that line, smiled, and crossed it out with the pen.The paper gave a faint rustle, like the last words of everything Victor and I had been.I murmured to
