LOGINKai's POV
Kian sauntered in looking like the cat that got the canary. I leaned back and watched him sit on a leather chair grinning, I waited for the usual sardonic response and he did not disappoint. “So, how did it feel to play Knight in shining armour for once?” His tone held mockery and his eyes, amusement. “It was weird, I'm usually the villain,” I replied after a moment of thought. “With where you're keeping her, I'd say you fully qualify for the villain role.” His tone was light and mild, hiding the intensity that he was well known for. My brother was the charmer, hiding his darkness from anyone he came across, my darkness was plain to see. My eyes were unreadable as I gazed at him, “If you want to release her, be my fucking guest but if she runs, that's on you.” He laughed and annoyance twinged inside me, “Relax, I'm not asking you to release her.” He tilted his head to the side, “We kept our mate in a cage, do you think there's something wrong with us?” We both looked at each other for a moment, then simultaneously, “Nah.” Sarcasm dripping from our tones. “After 19 years, we'll finally have the truth on why our mother was killed.” Something akin to relief crossed my twin's face. Everyone had their demons, this one was ours. 19 years ago, when we were six, our mother was killed right in front of us with us hiding in the closet. Sometimes I could still hear her screams. We had gotten a view of one of the men's faces and a crest, a three-headed wolf snarling, on his chest. Then fate had handed us his daughter sitting pretty in our prison and because the goddess had a good sense of humour, she was our mate. “What if she doesn't have the answer we're looking for?” I played devil's advocate. “What daughter doesn't know about her father's dealings? And if she truly doesn't, we can send her back to her pack to scout for information, either way she's the key to us getting what we want.” “And in the meantime…” I grinned darkly, seeing the same darkness reflected in my brother's eyes. “We get to play with her, revenge is a dish best cold and if she breaks in the process, well….that would be a shame, wouldn't it?” His smile was shark-like, nothing was going to get in our way, not even some pesky airhead that the moon goddess gave to us as a mate. Selena's POV My senses gradually returned to me as I could bring my body into consciousness. I was lying on something hard in somewhere that smelled metallic, like iron. No, not iron….blood. My vision was blurry when I opened my eyes and my body ached but it was the kind of ache that came with sleeping on the floor. My shoulder throbbed as I looked around wondering how I got here. I was in what looked like a cell, caged in by metallic bars and I could hear the sound of groans coming from the cells around me. The air was damp and humid, and now that I was more conscious, I could smell other things apart from the blood and none of them were pleasant. Guards with stern ugly faces were placed at every corner, each looking even more fearsome than the last. I scratched my neck in confusion, how did I get here? Tracing my memories to the moments before I woke up here was harder than it should have been. My body was exhausted and my mind felt fuzzy. I was running away from something… no, someone. An assassin from my old pack. He had killed Ellen. Oh God, Ellen…. A sob ripped out of my throat but I clamped my hand over my mouth to stifle it. Grief slammed into me, overwhelming me until it felt like I couldn't breathe. She died because of me, because she had let me in and protected me. My fault…My fault…All my fault. An agonised scream burst out of me, the guilt and the pain crushed me under their weight as I lay on the floor sobbing for the only mother I had ever known. I was alone in the world and rightfully so, I just wondered how much more I could take before I broke beyond repair if I hadn't already. The back of my neck prickled with awareness even before He spoke, “Well, this is such a pitying sight.” His tone held cruel mockery but it still sounded pleasant in my ears, deep and husky. Two scents hit me at once, the first one was of lightning, an electric storm destroying everything in its path, while the second one was of the ocean, I could almost hear the tides bashing against rocks as I inhaled the scents greedily. Roland has smelt of coffee and peppermint, it was nothing as powerful and oppressive as the two scents in the room. Shame hit me at that realisation that I had been distracted from my thoughts of Ellen by scents and anger washed over me not a minute later at the two people intruding on my grief. All the heat was swept out of me and replaced with a different kind when I saw them. It was like having double vision, the differences only coming after I had stared at them long enough. They looked like the gods of old with their thick black hair, aquiline noses, high cheekbones, and jaws sharp enough to cut glass. The heat turned into a burning inferno that started at my core and spread through my body leaving me panting like a dog in heat. They were all the things I wanted but I knew I shouldn't want. My wolf rose with a low eager whine. My mouth watered at the sight of their thick bulging biceps and their impressive stature, they could crush me and I'd die happily. The only difference in the two gorgeous men before me was their eyes, the first one, who smelled like lightning had milky eyes. ‘Moon touched’ they called his kind, people were usually afraid of them but they were almost always hidden in the goddess's temple. But this one was out here and clearly an alpha, that had never been heard of. The second had glowing violet eyes. Violet eyes….he was the one that I saw in the forest! “Think she is done eye-humping us now?” Milky eyes muttered to his brother, my face flushed and I tore my gaze away with great difficulty. The dominance radiating off them was oppressive, leaving my wolf cowering in submission even as she yipped happily. That should have been my first clue. The air was charged with a tension that was so tangible, I could almost see it. I opened my mouth to ask who they were but what came out instead stunned me, “Mates.” My voice was thin and reedy but the word was clearly heard. I closed my eyes in agony, goddess, haven't I had enough?Roland’s POVMorning had barely settled over the mansion when my secretary entered the study with a look on her face that I had learned to take. She wasn't scared or flustered. Her usual confidence was replaced by a careful restraint like she understood that the paper in her hands had big consequences."Alpha Roland " she said handing me a sealed envelope "This came directly from the High Council. They wanted you to get it first."I took the envelope without saying anything and the council seal made my jaw tighten. Emergency notices usually didn't arrive without warning and after everything that happened with Serena, I doubted this one was about business."Did they say what it's about?" I asked. She shook her head."No Alpha. They just said everyone named on it has to show up."The phrase "every individual named" stuck in my head long after she left. The study got really quiet.I carefully broke the seal. Unfolded the document inside. My eyes scanned the page quickly until one line st
Selena’s POVThe estate was really quiet that afternoon.. Beneath the calm, every corridor had a quiet sense of purpose. This was because tomorrow's request would change a lot more than another council meeting. People were moving around with a sense of efficiency rather than being nervous and rushed. They were passing sealed folders from one trusted person to another. Nobody was speaking louder than necessary. This was because every document now represented years of questions and sadness.I was standing beside the library window when Kai came in carrying the leather portfolio. He put it down on the table. Smoothed the edge with one hand. This simple gesture told me more than words could. He was not checking the papers anymore. He was making sure that nothing, not a folded corner would weaken what they had worked so hard to build."The last witness statement is signed " Kai said, looking at Kian and me. "Lewis confirmed every page Tina reviewed the dates again. Every supporting record
Kai's POVThe map spread across the table had gradually disappeared beneath stacks of papers until the polished oak was barely visible. What had started as a search for answers now looked like a case and that difference mattered.I rested my hands on the table. Looked over everything one more time. Each document told part of the story. Together they told a single story.Kian stood opposite me his fingers touching the table edge. He listened to the rustle of papers.“Read the payment records again " he said calmly. "I want to hear if it still fits with everything we've found.”I nodded.“It does.”Selena looked up from the papers she was organizing.“Read it anyway.”Her voice was calm and disciplined.“If we're asking the council to trust us we should check our conclusions before they do.”A small smile appeared on my face.“You're starting to sound like Kian.”She answered without looking from the papers.“I've spent time with both of you.”I carefully lifted the ledger. Read aloud.
Roland’s POVThe mansion had gotten into a routine over the past few days. The servants were doing their jobs fine but I could tell something was off. It was not a deal or anything but it was happening often enough that I could not just ignore it. My mother, who was always in control and calm was acting like she was waiting for some bad news to come at any moment.I found her in the west library one afternoon standing in front of a record cabinet with three senior archivists waiting beside her. They all looked really uncomfortable. The room was quiet in a way that felt heavy."What is the point of keeping all these files?" my mother asked sharply holding a ledger like it was disgusting. "Some of these records are older than half the people in our pack. They are just collecting dust instead of being useful."The head archivist looked down before answering."My Lady the council says we have to keep all the records of our bloodline and household the ones about Alpha families. We are not
Kian’s POVThe cottage felt quieter than it had an hour ago. We hadn't moved far from the table. The evidence was still arranged in piles. The silence wasn't empty anymore. It had direction. There's a difference between searching for the truth and deciding what to do with it. I learned long ago that the second question is always the more dangerous one.I rested my fingertips on the edge of the table. I let my mind replace sight with the sounds of voices, breathing, and movement. Kai stood opposite me. He was organizing documents into folders with precision. Selena was by the fireplace. She was quieter than usual. I could hear her breathing. She wasn't overwhelmed. She was thinking. That made her more dangerous than anyone in the room."We have enough " I said finally. I broke the silence without raising my voice. "We connected the payments, letters, travel records, Tina's testimony, and your father's note. Every piece points to the people."Kai didn't answer away. I heard another shee
Selena’s POVThe sun was going down when the three of us got back to the cottage. It was hidden behind the trees on the side. Nothing had changed since we were last there.. This time I was carrying something new with me. We were not coming with questions like we used to. We had evidence now.. Evidence can bring back memories that we forgot.Tina opened the door before I could knock twice. She looked relieved. It made her face look softer. The lines around her eyes were not as deep."You came back " she said quietly. Moved aside. "I thought you would."I smiled a little as I went inside."We found something " I said. Her face changed. She was not excited. She was worried. This was the kind of worry that comes when you know the truth can be harder to deal with than lies.Kai closed the door. Kian stayed by the window. He was listening to the woods. He does this all the time. It is like a habit.Tina noticed this."They always look out for you " she said gently.I looked at the twins. Th
Selena’s POVKai clasped hos hands tightly around the glass but stayed quiet, taking slow sips of the water instead.“I’ve never been wanted by my own pack. I was deemed the useless one because I’m fat and now, even my mate chose my sister over me.”The sound of glass shattering against a wall fill
Selena’s POVIt’s been a few hours since I woke up and the room was still empty.Slowly, I pulled the covers off my body and swung my legs over the edge of the bed, placing my palms on the bed and glancing around the room. It was eerily quiet and for some reason, that made me unsettled.I sigh and
Selena's POV Turn around little mouse…I squeezed my eyes shut and slowly, I did. Kai stood in the doorway behind me, hands clasped behind his back, looking calm like he had been waiting there the whole time but his anger was written in the stillness of his body. His muscles were tensed and he was
Selena’s POVI chugged down the entire glass of water and wiped under my lip with a napkin, avoiding Kai’s curious eyes.He slowly lifted the spoon to his mouth, watching me intently as he ate. A strange maid brought a bottle of wine and dropped it on the table before nodding at him and scurrying o
