Chapter 3: Into the Unknown

The car door shut with a quiet, final click.

It sounded small.

But to Lyra, it felt like the loudest thing she had ever heard.

Like a door closing on her entire life.

She sat stiffly in the back seat of the black SUV, her hands clenched tightly in her lap as the vehicle pulled away from the only home she had ever known. The gates of her pack grew smaller in the distance, fading into nothing as the forest swallowed the road behind them.

No one came after her.

No one stopped her.

Not even Kael.

Her chest tightened painfully at the thought.

Lyra turned her head slightly, pressing her forehead against the cool glass of the window. The trees rushed by in a blur of green and shadow, but she barely saw them.

All she could see—

Was the moment everything broke.

I reject you.

The words echoed again and again in her mind, each repetition twisting the knife deeper.

Her throat burned.

Her eyes stung.

But she refused to cry again.

Not here.

Not in front of him.

“You’re thinking too much.”

The deep voice cut through the silence like a blade.

Lyra flinched slightly and lifted her head.

Darius.

He was seated in the front, his posture relaxed, one arm resting casually near the window. But despite the calm exterior, there was nothing relaxed about him. His presence filled the entire car, heavy and controlled, like a predator at ease—but never harmless.

She noticed his eyes watching her through the rearview mirror.

Observing.

Analyzing.

It made her uneasy.

“How do you expect me not to?” she snapped, the words coming out sharper than she intended. “My mate just rejected me in front of everyone, and now I’m being taken away by his enemy like I’m some kind of… prize.”

The word tasted bitter.

Darius didn’t respond immediately.

The silence stretched.

Then—

“Good.”

Lyra blinked, caught off guard. “What?”

“I said, good.”

She stared at him, disbelief flashing across her face. “Are you serious right now?”

His gaze met hers in the mirror, steady and unreadable.

“I don’t like weakness,” he said calmly. “And I don’t take in people who break easily.”

Her anger flared instantly, burning through the lingering pain.

“You don’t take in people at all,” she shot back. “You abduct them.”

One corner of his mouth lifted slightly—not quite a smile, but close enough to unsettle her.

“If I abducted you,” he said, his voice lowering just a fraction, “you wouldn’t be sitting there freely arguing with me.”

Lyra opened her mouth to respond—

Then paused.

Because… he wasn’t wrong.

She was free to speak.

Free to resist.

He hadn’t forced her into silence.

That realization didn’t comfort her.

If anything, it made everything more confusing.

She looked away, her fingers tightening again.

“Where are you taking me?” she asked after a moment, her voice quieter now, more cautious.

Darius turned his gaze back to the road ahead.

“My territory.”

The words were simple.

But the way he said them—

Sent a subtle chill down her spine.

Not pride.

Not warning.

Something deeper.

Something that made it clear—

This wasn’t just another pack.

“And what happens when we get there?” she pressed.

Another pause.

Longer this time.

“You’ll stay,” he said finally.

Lyra frowned. “That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one you need.”

Her jaw tightened. “You don’t get to decide my life.”

“And yet,” he replied evenly, “your life has already changed.”

That hit harder than she expected.

Because it was true.

Painfully true.

She fell silent after that.

The car continued down the long, winding road, deeper into unfamiliar territory. The trees grew thicker, the shadows darker, and the air itself seemed to shift—heavier, charged with something she couldn’t quite place.

Lyra shifted slightly in her seat, a strange unease settling into her chest.

Something about this place…

Didn’t feel normal.

Minutes passed.

Or maybe longer.

Time felt strange now.

Unsteady.

Eventually, she couldn’t take the silence anymore.

“Why me?” she asked suddenly.

Darius didn’t turn.

Didn’t react.

But she saw it—

The slight tightening of his grip on the steering wheel.

“You had an entire pack there,” she continued, her voice gaining strength. “Stronger wolves. Better choices. So why did you choose me?”

This time, he didn’t answer right away.

The silence stretched so long that she almost thought he wouldn’t respond at all.

Then—

“Your scent changed.”

Lyra frowned. “What?”

“The moment you were rejected,” he said, his voice quieter now, more deliberate. “Something about you… shifted.”

Her heartbeat quickened.

“That’s impossible.”

“Nothing about you is impossible.”

The certainty in his tone made her stomach twist.

She leaned forward slightly, gripping the back of the front seat.

“What does that mean?”

Darius finally glanced at her again.

Not through the mirror this time.

Directly.

His eyes locked onto hers—dark, intense, and filled with something she couldn’t quite understand.

“Tell me,” she demanded softly.

For a moment, it looked like he might actually answer.

Like he might finally explain why she had been dragged into this mess.

But then—

He looked away.

“You’ll find out soon enough.”

Frustration surged through her.

“That’s not good enough—”

“Get some rest,” he interrupted calmly.

“I’m not tired.”

“You will be.”

Lyra leaned back slowly, staring at the back of his seat.

She hated this.

The control.

The mystery.

The way he spoke like he already knew things she didn’t.

But more than that—

She hated the small, quiet voice in the back of her mind whispering something she didn’t want to admit.

That maybe…

Just maybe…

This wasn’t random.

That maybe there was a reason behind all of this.

A reason she didn’t understand yet.

As the car continued deeper into the unknown, Lyra wrapped her arms around herself, trying to steady the unease building inside her.

Because one thing was becoming painfully clear—

She wasn’t just leaving her old life behind.

She was driving straight into something far bigger.

Far darker.

And far more dangerous…

Than she was prepared for.
