How do you hold on when the person you love is already letting go?

——————————

It was the first day of school and the final year in college. Lucy Quinn woke up feeling hopeful while most students were feeling sad the summer break had ended. Today things were supposed to go back to normal, today she would finally see Adrian.

Adrian Matthews was her childhood sweetheart, they grew up together. Though their families were business partners, they had bonded over the years. when Lucy turned sixteen, they were betrothed, and since then, Lucy had always dreamed of building her perfect family with Adrian. Adrian was the perfect guy, way taller than her with broad shoulders, blue eyes, dark hair and that perfect smile.

As Lucy walked through the college gates, she started feeling nervous. She remembered how Adrian had changed the past few months. He hadn’t picked or returned any of her calls the entire summer break, he hadn’t even replied to the last texts she had sent.

“Lucy, Lucy”. A tiny voice screamed. Lucy turned to see a girl running towards her in designer dress and blonde hair.

It was Zoe. Zoe was the first… and well, the only friend she had since the first year in school.

Zoe gave Lucy a very big and tight hug. So tight, she almost ran out of breath. “I missed you Lucy.” Zoe said, finally letting go of Lucy.

Zoe was the complete opposite of Lucy. Lucy was well, a very quiet girl who loved romantic books and poetry. Zoe on the other hand was the social type, always present in every party, and always knew about all the campus gist.

She reached to her bag and brought out a small present box. “Look what I got you, it’s a welcome back gift”

“Awww Zoe, how thoughtful of you” Lucy said as she opened the box to find her favorite chocolates and a pretty gold necklace with a moon-shaped pendant.

“Ouuu….my favorite chocolates, you’re the best Zoe, and the necklace… it’s so pretty”. Lucy said as she leaned in for another hug.

“I don’t know what I’ll do without you”

“Good you’ll never find out, cos I’m never leaving you”. Zoe wrapped her hands around Lucy’s as they walked through the hallway.

“Have you seen Adrian, has he given you a welcome-back kiss?” Zoe asked

Lucy immediately felt her heart sink. “Not yet, but I think we have the same morning class” Lucy said, trying to hide how anxious she felt.

“Okay Lucy, I have to get going, I have a marketing class in five minutes. Go and find your man but when I come back, I want details. Don’t forget we are meeting up for lunch.” Zoe waved her goodbye and disappeared into the crowd of students.

Lucy took a deep breath and adjusted her bag, she walked into the opposite hallway and then she saw him, she saw Adrian.

Adrian was standing by a row of lockers with his usual group of friends. He was laughing at a joke one of them made. Lucy felt her heart flutter, she immediately forgot how coldly Adrian had been treating her the past weeks.

Adrian looked even more handsome than she remembered, his jawline looked sharper, his hair that messy style that made girls sneak second glances at him.

Lucy quickened her footsteps, “Adrian !” she called out in excitement and relief.

She walked toward him, a bright smile lighting up her face. She expected him to turn around, his eyes softening the way they used to. She expected him to excuse himself from his friends and pull her into a hug, or at least offer her a polite smile.

As Adrian saw her, his look immediately changed. He didn’t smile or wave at her. He looked at her with disgust and turned back to his friends laughing and they walked the opposite direction.

Lucy froze, her hands were still in the air. She was in complete disbelief. She couldn’t believe that the man she was supposed to get married to, just looked at her like that, like she was trash. A group of students ran past her, almost knocking her to the ground.

“Adrian” She whispered, but the hallway was too loud.

Lucy felt rejected.

She suddenly had a strange feeling, like someone was watching her. She turned to find an unfamiliar face standing by the hallway. He was leaning against the wall with a worn out jacket on one of his shoulders.

Lucy immediately felt her cheeks burn with embarrassment. He had seen everything, the way Adrian had mistreated her. She wanted the grounds to open up and swallow her. The day just started but it kept getting worse. She quickly looked down at her shoes, holding her bag to her chest and ran towards the opposite direction.

She entered the first empty classroom she saw and slumped to the grounds, leaning her back against the wall. Her eyes were filled with tears. She wiped her face and tried to steady herself. “ I’m just overthinking” Lucy said to herself. “Adrian is just busy, he has a lot to deal with in his father’s business. That’s all.” Lucy tried to console herself, though she knew it wasn’t true.

She reached to her bag and brought out one of the chocolates Zoe had given her earlier. But as she unwrapped it, she found it difficult to eat it. The sweetness felt like she was deceiving herself.

Robert buttoned his suit jacket, picked up a thin folder, and walked toward the center of the courtroom with a calm confidence. Unlike the prosecutor, he didn't try to command the room with dramatic gestures."Your Honor, the defense would like to begin with scientific evidence.""You may proceed."Robert nodded to one of the attorneys seated behind him. A young woman stood and connected her laptop to the courtroom display. Within seconds, a timeline appeared on the large screen.Robert faced the jury. "The State's entire case depends on one assumption."He paused just long enough for everyone to focus. "They claim Lucy Matthews poisoned Adrian Matthews shortly before dinner, during the family toast."He looked toward the prosecutor. "That timeline is impossible."The prosecutor frowned but remained seated.Robert continued. "The defense calls Dr. Emily Carter, chief forensic toxicologist."A woman in her fifties stepped into the witness box. After taking the oath, she adjusted her gl

The prosecutor walked toward the witness stand with a calm smile."Miss Vance, how long have you known the Matthews family?"Zoe folded her hands neatly in her lap. "Almost six years.""And your relationship with them?""We're close family friends.""Were you present at the Matthews estate on the night Adrian Matthews collapsed?""Yes."The prosecutor nodded."I'd like you to tell the court exactly what happened."Zoe lowered her eyes for a moment before looking back up. Her voice was soft and convincing."We were having dinner after the charity gala. Everyone seemed... normal at first." She paused. "Adrian had been drinking throughout the evening. He was in a good mood.""What about Mrs. Matthews?"Zoe slowly turned toward Lucy. "She wasn't."The prosecutor allowed the silence to linger. "What do you mean?""Lucy barely spoke during dinner. She looked angry. She kept staring at Adrian.""Did anything happen before dinner?""Yes.""What?""I heard them arguing."The courtroom became e

The courthouse was already surrounded by reporters before sunrise.Satellite news vans lined both sides of the street. Camera flashes lit up the courthouse steps every few seconds, and police officers struggled to keep the growing crowd behind the barricades. Reporters shouted over one another, each trying to be the first to deliver another update on the case that had dominated headlines for days.To the public, there was only one story: 'Lucy Matthews had poisoned her husband.'People stood behind the barriers holding up their phones, hoping to catch a glimpse of her."That's her!""They're bringing her in!""Do you think she'll confess?""She's finished."The back doors of a police transport vehicle swung open and Lucy stepped out slowly.A pair of silver handcuffs circled her wrists. The bruises beneath them had barely faded before fresh marks had replaced them. She wore the same dark dress from the night of Adrian's collapse, now wrinkled from three sleepless nights in custody. "We finally got it," Robert said.Jonathan looked up from the timeline displayed on the screen. "The pharmacy footage?"Robert nodded. Everyone around the table shifted closer as he clicked a key on his laptop.A grainy security video appeared on the large monitor. The timestamp read 4:10 p.m., two days before Adrian collapsed. A woman wearing a long trench coat stepped inside the pharmacy. A wide-brimmed hat hid most of her face, and large sunglasses covered her eyes. She kept her head lowered as she walked to the counter."No amateur would dress like that," Robert murmured. "They knew there were cameras."The woman stopped in front of the pharmacist and reached into her handbag.Jonathan folded his arms. "Zoom in."Robert enlarged the image. The quality became rough, but another investigator isolated the reflection from the security mirror hanging behind the register.Slowly, the picture sharpened. The room fell silent. Even beneath the sunglasses and hat, one detail stood out imme

It was almost dawn and Jonathan's legal team had no intention of slowing down. Empty coffee cups sat scattered across the table beside stacks of reports, photographs, and printed security logs. Every laptop screen glowed with maps, timelines, and surveillance footage.Jonathan remained standing near the digital display on the wall."If Lucy couldn't have poisoned Adrian," he said quietly, "then someone else had to be close enough to him before dinner."Robert nodded. "That's where we start."One of the investigators immediately divided the board into three columns.Who had access. When they had access. Whether anyone can verify it."Let's rebuild the evening from the beginning," Robert said.A young investigator clicked open the estate's security records. "The first guests arrived between seven-thirty and eight o'clock. Most remained in the main foyer. Drinks were served by catering staff while the Matthews family greeted investors."Another screen displayed dozens of camera angles fr

The clock on the wall read 3:14 a.m.The conference room had grown quiet except for the sound of keyboards clicking and papers turning. Empty coffee cups were scattered across the table, and no one looked like they had slept.Jonathan sat at the end of the room, watching his legal team work. No one dared waste time.Robert Vance adjusted his glasses and looked up from a stack of medical reports. "I think we've found something."Every conversation in the room stopped.Jonathan looked at him. "What is it?"Robert slid a document across the table. "The police timeline doesn't make sense. The prosecution believes Lucy poisoned Adrian's whiskey shortly before the dinner toast.""That's their entire theory," Robert continued. "But according to the hospital's toxicology report, the timing doesn't fit."One of the medical consultants connected his laptop to the large screen. "The poison wasn't something ordinary," he explained. "It appears to be a restricted cardiac medication. We still don'
